    The AMD RX Vega 56 card has remained a top choice of ours since its launch, but it has been scarcely available over the past year. Vega cards -- including Vega 64 -- have finally become more available with the collapse of mining, and they're particularly interesting when considering the current landscape.

      Didn't you "lose" a lot of performance by not OC the RAM higher? V56 should get higher HBM then 950 MHz, or so i think. Is a V64 BIOS needed?

      @Cuzeg Spiked So why exactly is that so much more dangerous than any voltage sliders? You can just download Intel xtu of Ryzen master and set the voltage to something way too high, (yes even on locked Intel models), disable power limits and just let it pull what it wants. Sure your MB might run into limits, but I'm pretty sure you can send 1.6v into your cpu, admittedly I never dared to try though. Anyway, by the time someone has access to your reg, you probably have more to worry about

      +Cuzeg Spiked Malware like that already exist, but 99% of the time it requires you to "run it as administrator" and I highly doubt anyone's going to run a random .exe they found on the internet as administrator..you'd also need to enable all the different virus stuff manually, as trying to do it via a automated process is impossible due to how the Windows registry works.

      @@MotorHorse ah...another person who doesn't seem to know how GPUs and for that matter any microprocessors works. I can tell you from personal experience and common sense that until you hit TJmax of a specific component, it's going to be fine for many many years. Even really hot GPUs if they stay within their designed temperature limits will work fine for decades if not exposed to frequent power shortages and maintained properly by their owners(that means cleaning the cooling system and changing thermal pads along with whatever thermal compound is used for the core), at which point malfunctions happen due to peripheral electronics going bonkers and not core itself.
      The thing is not mechanical(apart from fans) and silicon degradation even if it is a thing happens at a much later stage than even 10 years of use.
      People who are afraid of used mining cards are just people who are probably afraid to dissasemble the damn thing and shouldn't buy used things in the first place, that is too complicated for them.
      I've seen plenty of supposedly "dead" cores revived by resoldering memory chips and vrms, as well as refurbishing whole PCBs from different model GPUs by resoldering the core itself to another unit entirely due to two models having similar memory chips configurations as well as sufficient power subsystems. And those frankensteins lived, perfectly stable for that matter.
      Trust me, I've seen hot gpus, I've seen old gpus and I've seen plenty of people thinking of GPUs and CPUs as of coffee grinders, apparantly. Guess which of these 'items' were just fine and which weren't.

    • @MotorHorse
      @MotorHorse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@yubos98 Good thing Science doesn't operate off of personal experience...your analogy fails because all components are technically physical. We like in a physical universe. Granted, there is less wear due to it being a non-moving part, but damage can and will still occur. That damage just may take decades or centuries to accumulate to a point that breaks the component. That's why you see most carefully treated components from the 80's still working great...until you look at the stuff that was run hard. Lifecycles change due to wear. Sorry, but you are wrong.

      I really wanted a couple Palpatine editions of Vega that came in full water blocks and the same phrase. I would have quickly thrown $800 each into them without a second thought. Instead I ended up with a piece of trash Titan Xp Empire collectors edition that should say "power throttling, screaming like a pod racer, and thermal throttling like Anikan being burned alive!". So I haven't used it in months, its pretty garbage, instead I've switched back to my oritinal duel R9 Fury cards (they also make better fps in most of my games since most of my game library does multi-GPU, and since they never power throttle, the 1% lows are way better and much less choppy). Sad when duel GPU is smoother than the flagship cards...

      @not_a_samsquamsh6777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Agreed. I did some testing myself on my Strix 56 last week when i was going for 3DMark scores. Leaving voltage and clocks at stock but setting the power limit to +50% reached 290-300 watts. I then dropped voltage -100mV to 1.1V and it went all the way down to 210 watts in Firestrike. I also gained about 50Mhz, from 1480 to 1530Mhz.
      I played around with bumping clock speed from there and reached a sustained 1610Mhz with ~275 watt power draw. Kind of annoying the actual clockspeed never comes close to the set number in software though. Set it for 1590 and the card will do 1525-1530 but never more. 1610 Mhz needed to be set at 1715Mhz in GPU Tweak. :/
      At least it got me to the top of the 1600X/Vega 56 Firestrike charts :D

    • @names-are-for-friends
      @names-are-for-friends 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      That's impressive! I'm not lucky enough to own a Strix; I own the Sapphire Pulse model because it was dirt cheap at the time. It's only got a dual fan cooler, and it gets loud dispersing heat. I also only have a 550W Thermaltake London power supply and an A320M board. I don't feel confident pushing 275W like you do, but I am satisfied at 950mV with the memory clocked at 950MHz or so (still finding stable clocks). Core clocks approach 1500MHz.
      And hey, I have a 1600 too! Not the X model, though. Ryzen is great and I couldn't be happier that there is genuine competition there. I'd been using Intel CPUs since the Core Duo processors and the present situation gives me fond memories of picking an Athlon 64 over Pentium 4... monopoly has sucked for CPU and GPU markets

    • @names-are-for-friends
      @names-are-for-friends 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I feel like Nvidia did exactly what they wanted to do, but it was a terrible decision. They had this tech they wanted to push that would solidify their market position, and represented a genuinely huge step forward. They had enough of an advantage in the market that they thought they could throw the cost of the new tech on the buyers. After all, Vega was a failure and mocked for its power use, and Nvidia moved forwards as if they were a genuine monopoly presenting an amazing step forward (that nobody really asked for) for just a few hundred dollars extra. The same thing happened to them that happened with Kinect; people balked at the cost and disregarded the new 'feature' that nobody wanted in the first place.
      That's not to say that the RTX cores aren't revolutionary, but nobody cares. It's premature.

    • @marsovac
      @marsovac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I flashed a 64 BIOS on mine (to get the V64 memory voltage) and i can get a stable 1650/1100 on a 1.1VCore undervolt and +50% power limit in Wattman without any registry mods. It outperforms a 1080 in almost every case, and is perfromance wise about this one shown in the video. But that might depend on your silicon lottery. Some card might need 1.2VCore for those clocks in which case the wattman power limit won't be enough or the memory won't go as far as 1100Mhz in which case you cannot do anything about it (mem voltage is locked in BIOS). I expect the 64 to differ very little because Vega is memory bandwidth staved, not CU staved, so the 8 CU more (+12%) do not give much on average... maybe half of that or about 6%. The real difference is the overclocking of the memory from 800 Mhz (V56=800) to 1100 Mhz (V64=950+150Mhz). A lot also depends on temperature, since it will throttle because of that if you don't cool it well. So buy an aftermarket version or equip it with custom water cooling. In My case it is equipped with an NZXT G10 bracket and a Thermaltake Asetek water cooler with 240mm rad. Or just buy a 1080, since those can be found at the same price and you don't have to fiddle around...

      Point of correction, but AMD did not sell cards directly to miners. They only ever sell the chips to manufacturers of cards (save for their reference cards, and reference cards are sold to resellers, not directly to miners or anyone else).
      It's more accurate to say that miners bought a lot of Vega 56 cards. While AMD didn't exactly condemn that behavior - in fact, they even made mining improvements to their drivers - the only way they were profiting from this is by selling their supply of chips. The drivers recently gave it a boost to start running like 1080 ti's in certain games or coming close from when release it was between a 1070 and 1070 tyi at best, shows how hardcore they have been taking care of VEGA 56/64 & Radeon Pro 8200/9100 (guessing 9100 also) so would LOVE, LOVE if you still have your 8200 to see the changes, its excellent! .... no it was all taped out long ago as steve did this same mod a year ago but we couldn't say back then that this is how it compares to a 2070.

      @@KillaBitz What GPU has Buildzoid not murdered though?
      The answer would be a Titan Xp, and I'll beat him to that, because Nvidia's flagship card is a piece of trash. I've got sub-zero cooling as well for destroying it, I just don't want hardware mods, because I'm sending that piece of garbage back to them dead in a fiery pile of ashes, possibly multiple times depending how many of those landfill items they send me. The drivers are garbage, and after wasting $600+ in my time troubleshooting to find that its driver issue (so hardware won't fix it), I asked for a partial refund, and they said if its been even 31 days, its too long and all they can do is send you another piece of hardware (which doesn't fix the software issue...). So time for some LN2 careless suicide runs! Maybe just pour LN2 down the stock reference cooler and tape the bottom off? Buildzoid did similar on a heatsink wrapped in tape back when he was poor and couldn't buy an LN2 cooler, for mine, it would just be because Nvidia cards suck, and I've already used some RADEON GPUs as doorstops (was using some DDR4 today as a box opener).
      I never send hardware back that has been overclocked, but Nvidia didn't have a solution (and at that time, the $1200 card had never been overclocked). It's just been used as a paper weight for probably half the time I've owned it, it crashes way too many games (worse than ANY crossfire setup I've made to date...). Waste of $1200, and a waste of time troubleshooting (it would have been fine if it worked, heck I probably would have bought a second one to "bring balance to the GeForce" since it was the Star Wars collectors edition, but I'm glad I didn't, its a piece of trash). I would only murder an RTX 2080ti if they sponsored me one, I would NEVER use it in a gaming system, they have such garbage drivers, they couldn't GIVE me ANYTHING and have me run it for my daily system, I'm not wasting time troubleshooting again.

    You fail to mention if you lowered/adjusted voltages or not. No one has to take this to 242% to get a big performance boost. The 2070 match up is nice to know but not that relevant to a Vega 56 owner/purchaser. Since Vega 64s are ~$500 or less now it is a better candidate for this mod/comparison. For nVidia fans a 1080/Ti which is not restricted by a 114 power limit is a better option than the place holder 20XX cards. Your charts show how well the 10XX cards do when OCed. It is early in the 2070 release but it is notable that 2070 has lower lows in some titles unless ODec. Also in many games nVidia shows that spiky frame-time compared to AMD (I feel it is related to their compression tech) which leads to claims of faster aiming on AMD. I wonder if the monitoring SW needs to be investigated on sampling speed and metric calcs for FPS and temps are reported correctly and for detecting throttling on todays and recent much higher performing HW. The 9XXX 95w limits and the temp/throttling review issues have drawn attention to this.

    However, as worker on EDA industry. Side of TDP, I'm completely sure that there are space for better performance based in coupling all pieces that composes the product. PCB design, memory, silicon encapsulation, which btw costs more than the silicon itself.
    Dude you have no idea the whichcraft those guys do to turn on and off silicon logic an retain consistently when power is back by demand. It is really trick. Small transistor nodes mean more static leaking and dealing with all of that It is a work of art
