Thailand pro-democracy protesters face royalists, police as political tensions grow

- Thailand anti-government protesters and royalist supporters of King Maha Vajiralongkorn staged rival rallies on either side of a Bangkok street on Wednesday, with political tension growing after three months of demonstrations.
Thousands of anti-government protesters overtook Bangkok's Democracy Monument on Wednesday, in a symbolic move in their fight for democracy, the new charter rewrite and the monarchy reformed to be under the constitution. Protesters gave the three-finger salute - a symbol of resistance - as they chanted for Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to resign.
Just a few dozen meters away, hundreds of royalists assembled too, dressed in yellow, along with members of the security forces.
It all comes after protesters made a rare direct challenge to the king on Tuesday, chanting at his passing convoy after 21 activists were arrested during scuffles with police.
