Speaking as an engineer, I have to say that as nice as it is to build lenses of the same size, this is where the first compromise arises. Different focal lengths require different lens constructions. Usually a different number of lenses and groups, depending on which optical flaws occur and need to be corrected. The uniformity of size was definitely achieved at the expense of image quality. It will be the same with the lens hood, which is typically calculated for a specific focal length. In the case of Sirui, the lens hood will certainly not work well with the 33mm lens.
There are cine lens sets that are all the same size but with incredible IQ. Sirui’s IQ is also due to the lack of coating, to cut costs. They could’ve done better and still had the lenses the same size, but they intended for them to be budget options
Arthur R does it right, an honest review of some great looking lenses. Sad that they don't measure up. Have to hand it to Sigma for taking their time to make spectacular lenses. Thanks, Arthur, for not shilling for these companies and being their salesman.

Such a fair review! In many ways is reassuring that a company that has been around for decades and is well respected, does produce lenses far better than a company new to the scene. Well done to Siriu for excelling in the looks department. Talking of that, it’s still nice to see your wife’s smile even in soft focus!
I think these lenses are intended to be AF versions of the Nightwalker (the lack of focus breathing is a bit of a nod towards this), so more cinecentric than stills, and in this regard other reviewers have been satisfied enough with AF performance. I think Stills is a world apart and I could see these lenses falling short. Remember optics designed for video can fall down when being used for stills due to mp differences. I do however feel that many are criticizing these lenses from the wrong perspective. Thinking issues like CA as being something 'bad', when in fact CA in and of itself is not a bad thing (lenses that CA tend to render depth very well), in fact to combat it is what creates heavier and expensive lenses. CA for example was not an issue on film or when choosing mono as the working profile for the job. It's something that needs brought up and to be made aware of for sure, but to have it exist shouldn't be seen as a deal breaker (which unfortunately I think we have all been conditioned to thinking). I have seen character with these lenses, even at your 5:17 time stamp the SIRUI I feel has way more charm than the Sigma of your SOH (and another stop to be had if wanted seeing as its still f1.4 here). The Sigma might be sharper but look at all the skin retouching you'd need to do here, the SIRUI has a gentler approach needing mush less heavy processing (and still has adequate sharpness of the eyes. Whoever decided that all portrait lenses need to be super sharp has harmed the industry! A very select few cases (like high end fashion) need such resolution and really at this point just use a macro lens. The SIRUI looks sharp enough to get the job done, and 99% of general public or clients don't even know what CA in bokeh is. The lens is affordable with a charm that I am seeing as severely lacking today. If I'm being honest it appears like you have been somewhat conditioned to what a good optic should be, and if it doesn't tick those boxes its a neg. It takes time to appreciate optics being and looking different. Have a look around, some great vids already exist for this lens (at least in the realm of video). It's good to have choices, let's hope that SIRUI come through with fw updates to make the performance better.
THANK YOU ARTHUR! For being honest, not fearing the truth that you speak may annoy the manufacturer and may risk hurting your working relationship with the brand. I love you for being honest!
Thanks for honest review!! It's not easy to give negative opinion nowadays. Looked through basically every review on TH-cam, in general those who claim these lens are very sharp never shoot the charts or do pixel comparison, some even only use shots with f/4 - f/5.6... If I buy a f1.2 lens I would expect it's center sharp at f1.4, not f4... Hoped these to be good, and turns out very disappointed... I wait and refreshed the indigogo page like 20 times on 20th... I guess one of the major problem here is try try to re-house the nightwalker series into AF photography lens, which focus on AF/breathing/quite over sharpness and CA. Also the same size means either one lens is larger than it should be, or one lens compromise to maintain a smaller size. However most people buy these due to their cheap price, so the same filter size argument is actually justified, as you won't want to buy 3 filters of same type for 3 lens costing 849.
I would not have bashed on the prerelease firmware so much. The Sniper lenses are not designed to be sharp, they are designed to be soft, which inherently means chromatic aberrations. The Sniper are the autofocus version of the Night Walker cinema lenses, so they would have to have the same chromatic aberration to do that. You pick the Sniper/Night Walker when you want to accentuate the colors or get a retro look or draw the viewers attention the center of the screen.
I always trust Arthur when it comes to reviewing e mount lenses. Since the sirui was announced last september, i said to myself, i will only buy it if Arthur makes a review of it. Good thing i waited. Viltrox 75mm it is.
I pre ordered the 23mm only (I have the Sigma 56mm f 1.4, thankfully) and I am hoping to acheive a certain ”look” of a cine lens in low light, street photography with it. I do have a Nikon Z50, so the 20MP sensor is more forgiving than most other APS-C sensors. I am curious to see how it will work for me - if it doesn’t do the trick, I’ll pick up the Nikkor DX 24mm f1.7 - thankfully, APS-C lenses don’t break the bank!
It is not only lower MP number, its also wider Z mount=more light on the sensor. I have 23mm and 56mm snipers on Nikon Zfc and I'm really happy with the results
I got quite different performance results with the 23mm on Nikon z-mount. I agree re chromatic aberration but it can be corrected, as well as LR recognizes and provides corrections. Hoping Sirui sorts out what appear to be inconsistencies between cameras ... and adds some of the missing camera supports.
Thabks for the HONEST review! All of the other reviews I've seen of these so far are hyping them up like they're amazing. And then I went to the Indigogo page and saw most of those videos are on there too, which tells me they were paid to hype these lenses for the pre-sale. First real review I've seen.
I really appreciate the honest review. I was looking to try one of these, but I think I'll stick with the Sigmas. I think the good news about these lenses is that it means we might get autofocus Anamorphic lenses from Sirui in the future.
Slightly soft lens could work wonder for videography or even street photography. Not everyone like razor sharp image. But they definitely need to fix that auto focus. And the fact that the color don't match in those three lenses dies present a problem. But then again, they are supposed to be cheap lens, not a Sigma Art or G Master or Cine lens. Lens series that are consistent are usually VERY expensive.
Sigma apsc lenses are not much more expensive at all.. 16mm is only 20eur more expensive on german amazon, 30mm 50eur, 56mm 130eur.. ok this is a bit more but still no brainer.. and we have viltrox 56mm that is 40 CHEAPER!:) both are also considerably smaller. 23mm difference is substantial, more than 200eur, but again viltrox 40eur cheaper.
Thank you 🙏 for sharing Arthur I am a photographer and I would like to know if this lens is primarily designed for video purposes or if it can also be used for still photography.?
It really doesn’t make sense to compare these to stills lenses. They are completely different designs for completely different use cases. The sniper glass is the same as the nightwalker, they are for video and have character that many DPs actually seek - the sigma lenses are clinical, with no character at all, just sharp and stale. Sharper ≠ better for everyone, this is something everyone should understand. As well as the difference between stills and video lenses, they should not be held to the same standards at all. The barrel distortion on the 23 is gorgeous and the 56 is more appealing to my eye for video at @5:12, I don’t want to be staring into every single pore of someone’s skin. Saying the lens is “dreamy” isn’t about finding a positive in a negative. Softness is not a negative for everyone.
Checked in B&H, all 3 sales for $999 (all is temporary out of stock). No photos available yet. ( If Sigma opt in White for $100 more I buy one.) Great intro, thank you !
I really wanted to buy the 56mm. So disappointed. Guess I will add the sigma 56 to my collection instead. I already have the Sigma APS-C 18-50 and the 23mm. Been super happy with both.
I can't decide between Sigma 16 and 23, mostly for indoor small events (in home-sized spaces, pretty low light). Do you think the 23mm would be well-suited for it?
same here, getting so excited for the 56mm, and now turn out going to decide either viltrox 75mm f1.2 or sigma 56mm f1.4 or just go for this 56mm for the dreamy element
In addition to your comment about how good things take time, there's also the mantra, "You get what you pay for." I suspect that the 'engineers' that built these probably merely reverese engineered other products and then rushed them to market using substandard, garbage motors and optics. And then to try to compensate for it, they painted it in some fancy paint. if you aren't going to return them, maybe take a scalpel to the paint to see if it's plastic or metal under the paint. Also disappointing that they don't have some kind of seal at the interface. And, it would be interesting to see if the bodies are even sealed. I.e. take them from a cold, air conditioned space, then take them outside and see if sucks in the humid air (especially in Hawaii). Do that a couple times and see if the inside gets condensation.
You paint the real picture. It's like these lenses are featured on late nite TV or pushed on TH-cam like those crappy knives we see every holiday season. Maybe they should just have Sigma make the optics for their white barrels.
I think its fair to say , you get what you pay for . And sirui is just that . Its hard to beat the fact that your getting a consistency sized , decently sharp , autofocus F1.2s for around 280-300$ a pop ! And i would say the similar size and filter thread would be so help for gimbal, which is what they are marketing for . And imo if they can get the autofocus right and get some in camea C.A correction via a update.its just might be worth the price. i say they would definitely ace the version 2 of these forsho
@@richalexander1138nope, no wow factor for me. Sold it within a week, but I have to say, I didn’t gave it a good chance. Bought the Viltrox 27mm f1.2, I have no regret. What a beautiful lens that is!!
This lenses are made for video I think, to use on gimbal, not for pixel peeping in lightroom. Not all video-makers need super sharp glass, but chromatic aberrations level… my God) even vintage lenses are better.
As always great and objective review. Good job! I know you mostly do videos on new gear but hey you know have a a6700, vould be a good time to revisit some lenses. Ive been wondering on the telepohoto end. So y 70-350 vs tanrom 18-300 or the wide end now comparing the sigma 10-18 to the other wide end apsc lenses
I honestly couldn't care less about how a lens looks on the outside, make it pink and hideous for all I care, as long as it performs well. Sirui seems to have spent all their R&D budget on the outside of the lens instead of spending on what actually matters
just my take, sirui lens is about videography and sharpness is kinda not their priority. for the form factor i think they make it the same so it's easy swap on gimbal. but chromatic abberation is too much.
Beautiful lenses. I was wondering whether to buy them, but the beautiful appearance itself is not enough, they could have added 25% more to the price and made them a little better optically... :(
The sigmas tend to fringe about this much for me, although only in the most intense summer light-they don’t break down until July afternoons, nothing close to the circumstances you sampled here, sigmas would all manage fine without ND.
the weird thing is that all lenses are the same size. I think this is where they tried to safe money by camping different MM in different bodies.. hence why it works well for some mm and not so good for the 56. The viltron line up is an example where you can see each lens be unique for its focal length..
Вот почему они не могут сконструировать разные линзы, как у сигмы, а потом добавить металла для веса, чтобы сделать их одинаковыми. зачем эти компромиссы за счет качества изображения
Can you recommend something that works better for cinema lenses? Or just get more Viltrox lenses? Are these Sirui lenses even cinema lenses? I think I'm arriving at the tail end of this saga...
The minute I saw them (Storm trooper) glass I fell in love with them. I agree I saw a video and the footage look bland. I didn't see any character from the footage. Maybe I'll get the wide ver. BTW ive watched you mature a lot. in a good way
Hello Arthur, I know that this battle between Viltrox 75mm 1.2 vs Sigma 105mm 1.4 cannot be compared! But we are very curious what the difference in boken and quality will be in these 2 giants.. There is no such comparison on youtube with these 2 objectives, be the first to do it!!!🧐
For me it's Character a bit more Soft and dreamy.. so no need for the Filters. :) I Personal hate a Perfect sharp lens because it's boring! but it's first Firmware and first AF lens for Sirui. And for me personal it's a bit weird to do a Review on Pre production version. :P .. I still love my 56mm f1.2 of Sirui with use and look. P.s. Keep up the good Video's
@ArthurR could you test SIRUI Sniper 75mm f1.2 and 16mm f1.2 more info: th-cam.com/video/IYNKSH6ETz4/w-d-xo.html and check if they fix this AF. SIRUI Sniper 75mm weigh less than Viltrox 75mm f1.2 - could you can check which one is better ?
I know this is 10 months old but take into account that this is probably not for Photography... since Sirui is mostly make lens for video... just my 2 cents so its really not that sharp since in cinema sharp is not always good.
At least in my country the 30mm Sigma is 50$ cheaper than the Sirui and apparently it's sharper and more neutral, so for me I don't see even a point in getting the Sirui ones
It seems that there is a new firmware available for these lenses as they work with the A6700 at the following review: th-cam.com/video/X5mXPPIYw10/w-d-xo.html
Si hubiera visto tu video ayer no los habría comprado , jajajaj. Bueno, esperar que el firmwaere corrija estos horrores de enfoque , no me han llegado aún.
A little surprised you finished the video saying these are good lenses (but not great). Not sure "good" is what I'd call AF lenses that cant auto focus and has noticeable CA. If I was out shooting and couldn't get focus for over a minute and lost a great photo because of it "good" would not be the word I'd use to describe the lens, I'd use words that would make my mother blush. I always bring either my Sirui tripod or Sirui monopod with me when I go shooting, absolutely amazing products. Just seems like with these lenses they really messed up.. Anyways.. appreciate the review, great quality as always. =)
Had the Sigma trios (2/3), Tamron etc. LESSON: stick to the Sonys, IF AUTOFOCUS is your top priority. They do not perform 100% as well as the Sony lenses. On some older bodies they perform catastrophic. Same issues you had with the Sirui, I had on the 6300 with the Tamron. But on the FX30 runs almost perfectly (occasionally hunts). Stick to the manufacturer, on every system…. Yeah, it costs more. But make your life easier and don’t miss shots. Speaking from a videographer standpoint.
Glossy white design for a lens? That’s not form follows function. Lens are intended to work quietly, not attracting subjects’ attention and causing strong reflection from a shining object. And a giant USB-C hole on the ring? Terrifying.🥲

Muita diferença entra a viltrox 23mm 1.4?
The old saying holds true, "Don't judge a book by it's cover"
Makes you appreciate the Stigmas
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family 👪
Waited for this but I think it's not worth $300 at all
is the 56mm 85 on a6000 or does it still 56?
Thanks for the honest review brother. Sad to say, but I guess I am not buying these.
Viltrox 56mm f1.4 or Sirui 56mm f1.2?)
Thank You!!!
I think I'll stick to the Samyang V-AF series.
4:47 you really need a better sharpness target.
There is no such comparison on youtube with these 2 objectives, be the first to do it!!!🧐
Will still go with the sigma
We have a cool hidden camera, would you like to review it?
Not Siruis lenses.. :o)
I see a lot of complaints about sharpness, aren’t these supposed to be autofocusing cine lens and not necessarily photo lenses?
thanks for saving our wallet, you're the man!
Ouch, I thought these would be good.
Promise there will be an update after firmware update, just to know we need to abandon all hope on these
It seems that there is a new firmware available for these lenses as they work with the A6700 at the following review: th-cam.com/video/X5mXPPIYw10/w-d-xo.html
These lenses are hot garbage, I felt the same way about the nightwalkers to.full frame sirui glass is where it’s at.
More garbage than hot.
Full frame is massively overrated
Disagree
Si hubiera visto tu video ayer no los habría comprado , jajajaj. Bueno, esperar que el firmwaere corrija estos horrores de enfoque , no me han llegado aún.
y no , no mejoró con la actualiación.
Why not test at night? I don't think they made these for day time shooting. Just my 2 cent
Viltrox all the way
i was about to order this. but i changed my mind.
because of chromatic aberration and sharpness problem. felt like ur using a 50 dollar vintage lens.
@3 min in and yet not info on optical quality. Next time start with that. Great, ok or bad.
They are very weak, unfortunately.
How the iq compared to nightwalker though? I have a hunch this is just an af version of nightwalker
these are lenses for video not for photography
Beautiful lenses. Unfortunately, the amazing F1.2 on APS-C is equivalent only to the ordinary F1.8 on FF... 🙂
2 bad.
Looks like trash
Glossy white design for a lens? That’s not form follows function. Lens are intended to work quietly, not attracting subjects’ attention and causing strong reflection from a shining object. And a giant USB-C hole on the ring? Terrifying.🥲
