You've made a very nice video. I'm also a QX fan, started with the 100 in 2014 and wished for a changeable lens version which I bought in 2017. the best thing about this system is the inconspicuous way to take pictures. When you are looking at your smartphone, everybody around you knows that you are preoccupied with something and leaves you alone, not suspecting that you are maybe taking pictures of them. This is the ultimate street photography camera. A couple of things you missed out, touch to focus, can use A mount lenses with the LA EA4 adapter (from a cost viewpoint). I also have a 300mm f2.8 Minolta which I have used with it. I've also side loaded the Play Memories app to my Epson Moverio 35 (bought to fly my Mavic 2 Pro) so I see what the camera sees in the glasses and can control the camera ( like with the smartphone ) with the handset. Keep up the good work.

But the mid and low class ones already have better abilities for astrophotography than this and you also have to go through the hassle of getting to use it without a lens for a telescope. I think for the price it would not be wise to get it for astrophotography. For the same price and even less you get more value with a dedicated astrocam. Some astrocams also allow you to attach a few lens to use them as webcams for permanent all sky view for aurora for example. Granted that that curious camera is still way better than any phone for astrophotography and night photography though! :)

I use its little brother QX10 as my point and shoot solution for the last however long it's been out. As long as you have autofocus (always with the QX10, but QX1 depends on the lens) and don't zoom, it can be used completely "blind". It only takes a bit of spatial awareness to point it exactly where you want it to, and you get used to keeping it straight (pretty easy to adjust because it's cylindrical). And you can't review the photos right off the bat, so it gives a kind of analog feeling of film cameras, with none of the hassle. I love getting fun angles with that thing. Zoom is handy too but it's hard to freehand with narrow field of view.
It's also really easy to toss on a cheap smartphone gimbal compared to any other camera.

As someone who's strapped an Oly Air to my bike handlebars - you're a real one for trying the chest mount! I moved to E-mount but kept the Air and am now definitely keeping an eye on the listings for QX1s. I've always seen this class of bodies as an insanely flexible option, great for high/low angle and even those with limited mobility. You can place it on a monopod with a ball head or even hand-hold and it'll work like a probe lens, selfie stick, slider, all sorts of stuff. Get down at ground-level POV without bending or easily frame group shots because you have a detached monitor. Poke it around corners to video your cat. Stick it inside your mailbox or birdfeeder. Tape it to your ceiling fan. It does the zany things you'd do with an action camera or the things you'd do with a smartphone but at "real camera" quality ... mostly.

Then I would just sit down and control exposure and zoom on my second phone that I use as a remote control for these type of things. I could even walk around a bit without having to worry. For charging, I just use a power bank and use the phone holder for that.

I had the QX1 for a year. Image quality was fine (for the time) but my main gripe was connection issue. 2.4GHz wifi just wasn't good enough, and it was in constant network congestion everywhere I go. I hate that camera manufacturers are always YEARS behind network standards--5ghz became the norm in laptops and phones back in 2012-2013, yet the first camera to have 5ghz was I believe the GH5 in 2017, the first 5GHz Sony camera was the A7R4 / A7S3 in 2019-2020.

Fun fact: i took my QX-100 (the early versions of this concept from Sony) to a trip to Argentina, and the airline forbid the use of mobile devices through the entire flight (which was torture because there wasn't entertainment provided) so on my way back I kept my Sony phone attached to the QX-100 and set it on a tiny tripod for the food tray and i watched movies from there as if it was just a Camera, not a phone, and the staff bought it and leave me be.

Its mostly to do with the thickness, the shutter unit itself is like 4mm in thickness, there some that are 3mm like the one in the Canon R8 but thats not a full shutter, its a hybrid shutter that uses both e-shutter and mechanical combined.
S9 could easily done that, but I guess for some reasons Panasonic wanted a thinner camera???? To me it makes absolutely no sense because soon as you add the lens, all that advantage disappear, and its definitely not a cost cutting feature cause those shutter units are like 2 dollars LOL, thats some extreme level savings.

QX30? That's 399.95 quid no less on eBay. I'd be nearly tempted by a similar figure if it were in AUD. My QX10 just dispatched from Japan. It took them exactly 7 day to pack it and it will be on my porch in Aus in two. Interesting.

I have an odd realization that the ILX-LR1 is sort of an spiritual successor to the QX1 even though its a flop. The ILX-LR1 is made for an different purpose that is installed on a drone, vehicle or other commercial/industrial applications but it seems to have inherited features from the QX1 from lacking a screen to having wifi connectivity to control it wireless-ly (unless you have it hooked up to ur PC, drone or in conjunction with the increased hardware controls, an HDMI display).

Little trick for "quicker mounting" is to use a Magsafe Ring.
I just turn on my QX1, snap it into place using the Magsafe rings and not worry about the clipping mounts.
Just make sure to buy good quality ones to ensure sturdy mounting strength :)

I have the ATG QX-1 IR (modified by ATG for infrared) with ATG ACS adapter to ATG Canon EF1200/5.0 (modified 1 Stop faster)
It sees 1,800mm @ F5.0. This mega images are sharper than today $7,000.00 Canon EOS-R1 which only has 24.2.
My staff & I used this setup like this with ATG Robert Robotic (MRMC-modified from C to S).
It maybe the biggest flop for beginners. But not for the professionals that can think outside of the box.
When you are able to shoot in total darkness for photos & videos remotely, these will surely save our backs.
Even the best professional photographers have never seen /nor use a ATG/Canon EF1200/5.6.

This reminds me of the Siemens S55 phone, introduced in late 2002 it was an early color screen mobile phone and seemingly also one of the first with a camera - but an external with viewfinder that was attached to the bottom port.
My mum had it and of course it's perfect for taking UFO pictures, don't know if it even had live view but at least a real Xenon flash (that took a couple of seconds to charge the capacitor).
I like such Sony products, they didn't fear to publish some weird quirky stuff, I myself have an A58 (also had a 33) and these aren't normal DSLR cameras but kind of a bridge between DSLR and DSLM, because AF sensors on the image sensor weren't good enough around 2010 they put a semi-translucent fixed mirror (you can only move it upwards without a lens to clean the sensor), a part of the light rays goes straight to the image sensor which also provides a permanent live view and a part is reflected to the AF sensors (instead of an optical viewfinder), we also got an A-mount camera because my grandpa had his old Minolta 7000 with some lenses.
Or the SRS-LSR100/200 wireless TV speaker, it's a hearing aid for elderly people, for that purpose there are also some special wireless headphones available but due to the battery etc. they have these disadvantages and with normal speakers/soundbars nearby your TV you still have to turn up the volume quite much (and disturb neighbors), while that speaker brings it to the table next to your lounger/couch and they've also integrated a simplified universal remote control.
And of course also some more like that which perfectly match to their mid-/late-2000s slogan "Like.no.other"

Could be useful to mount in weird places e.g. externally on my glider, and then use a remote to take high quality photos. They key difference over action cams is you're not stuck to only wide angle. for external aircraft use I'd like:
    - Aerodynamic as possible (which a lens shape helps with).
    - Solid mounting (I see it has a screw mount).
    - Remote control for video and photos.

The biggest problem of this idea is that most people don’t actually care to learn about taking photos. A friend of mine has a 1000usd in camera gear and just took some pictures in auto mode for a bit, got bored of having to upload them to his phone and just ended up taking all his photos with his iphone. He just wants to point and shoot, and most general purpose users probably want that. Interchangeable lenses on phones matches two mostly incompatible target groups

The new Sirui AF 75/1.2 or slightly older Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 amazing as light lenses, but combining it with an E-mount body there is so much to choose from. I thought this QX1 would be the lightest (it kind of is), but the NEX C3 is only a couple of grams more and has its own screen, so I don't think I will try to find one of these.. ok I might keep my eye open for one... I think the real problem with this whole category is that the main advantage of smartphone cameras isn't that they're wirelessly connected--that's a secondary convenience. It's that you're already carrying them around, even if you're not a photography enthusiast. The camera that gets used is the one you have on you. If you need to carry this extra accessory, that advantage disappears, and the thing is more physically awkward than a self-contained camera with a viewfinder, rather than less.

  • @jw48335
    @jw48335 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The sensor peaks at just over 10 stops of dynamic range. The use I had for it was with a Valoi Easy35 film digitizer. I liked the idea of a self contained wifi camera on that. In reality, the 10 stops wasn't enough for Portra😢 I swapped it out for a beat up Pentax K70. Why? Pentax does some pixel shift black magic where the grain structure is basically perfect on color film in addition to a couple more stops of DR. I tried Olympus hi-res mode, and always got at least some artifacts and issues, and funky looking film grain.
I sold my q for more than I bought it for at least, lol.

I had the smaller version of this with a built in lense. It was really pretty good for its time! But it was heavily crippled by terrible battery life, and a phone app that was anything but reliable or stable. It was a little too early, while also being too late to the game? It would make an epic webcam though, if it had that functionality, which it does not.. So many missed opportunities.

I want a modern version of this, maybe with a better sensor, with USB C and control over wire as an option, with agnosticy when it comes to applications as it's just a sensor with some controls attached to it. I knew plenty of content creators, typically streamers with a static setup, who use legitimate cameras as essentially a high fidelity webcam, with some work these could also be high fidelity action cameras, etc.; another great use would be with telescope and microscope setups, things where the monitored variant does a lot better with an external monitor and where the cutdown on bulk and weight is beneficial. With the discrete sensor and simplified lens setup, along with the lack of the handle and body of a typical camera, with processing offset to the device being used, this is a really high fidelity solution in a small package without all of the processing junk modern small sensors have.
