In this video I discuss how the iron sights on the AK family series of weapons work and how to zero them, regardless of if your AK is an AKM, an AK74 or something else entirely.

The 7.62x39 AKM leaf sight is calibrated for 7.9 gram (122 grains) bullet flying 715 m/s (2346 ft/s).
To check if your ammo is compatible with the leaf, shoot 4+ shot groups with every leaf setting at 100 m (109.4 yards) with the same point of aim. Measure the distance from point of aim to average point of impact of every group. It should be as follows:
    1 - 0 cm, 2 - 10 cm (3.9 in), 3/П - 25 cm (9.8 in), 4 - 44 cm (17.3 in), 5 - 68 cm (26.8 in)
To have better idea about the trajectory google "таблица превышений акм" (table of elevations above sights line for akm)
    The 5.45 AK-74 leaf sight is calibrated for 3.4 gram (54.5 grains) bullet flying 900 m/s (2953 ft/s).
    1 - 0 cm, 2 - 5 cm (1.97 in), 3 - 13 cm (5.1 in), 4/П - 24 cm (9.45 in), 5 - 37 cm (14.6 in)

@@1s1k97 If your ammo is close enough to the one that the leaf was calibrated for, with 7,62x39 AKM for torso sized target you set the leaf on 3 and you can hit it at any distance from 0 to 300 meters (328 yd) with belt buckle point of aim, because point of impact will not get higher than 31 cm (12.2") above point of aim.
For head sized target you can set the leaf on 2 and hit it at any distance from 0 to 200 meters (219 yd) with chin/mouth point of aim because trajectory doesnt go higher than 10 cm (3.9") above point of aim.
"Table of elevations" (google "таблица превышений акм") state how high the POI will be above POA at certain distance on certain leaf setting.
If you shoot groups at 100m with different leaf settings and have the same elevations above POA as stated in the table, your ammo is compatible with the leaf and you can choose a leaf setting for given target size and hit it reliably.

8:13 on 7.62 AKs P position works from 0-300 meters, on AK74- 0-400. Because the direct show range ( if I can translate «дальность прямого выстрела» term this way) for AKM is 350 and for AK74 is 440.

I zeroed my Zastava m70 a few years ago, then tried shooting it at 300yd recently. Even though it was a Century Arms import, the zero hadn't changed a bit. I set the rear sight to "3" and had to aim slightly under the target (because 300yd =/= 300m). It's a very robust design and is perfectly usable if you know how to use it

Nice presentation. Job well done. I have my AKMS zeroed at 100m cutting the target in half. To me it helps with the aiming being definitive, but that is me.
I fully understand the "deal with it" on the sight alignment being so far off. However, if it is THAT far off I'd consider getting that barrel re-timed or if the barrel is mounted properly then get the rear sight fixed. I didn't get a good look at how the rear sight sits in the sight base but in many cases a wee bit of filling on one of the pins engaging the sight base to adjust the left/right cant is all you need. There is a video or two here on YT showing the procedure. Simple stuff. Cheers.

Yeah I did this recently with a WASR10 and my front sight ended up all the way to the left as well. I also got a PSA GF3 AK and it was zeroed right out of the box which was nice. I wish I would've just got an AK74 though, the 5.45 cartridge really was quite a major upgrade.
Whenever I fire my AKMs I remember "oh yeah this is basically a WW2 gun" because it feels like any other semi auto WW2 gun with maybe a little less recoil.
I like AKs but the AR is dramatically better.

The manual seem to be wrong. Russian military armorer, and some other competent dude separately used calipers to measure distance from the bottom of reciever to the rear sight notch, and its identical on 3/П for akm and 4/П for ak-74. They checked it with shooting too.

One full turn of the front sight is approximately 8 minutes of angle of elevation. One full turn of the sight tool on the windage drum is approximately 6 minutes of angle of windage. Trick with the windage is knowing when it actually started moving. Also shorter or longer barrels (krink vs SKS) will vary slightly.

Great video, Karl. Would you be willing to do a video covering the practical advantages of the Kalashnikov platform, the stuff that someone looking for a practical/serious use rifle would consider? It's not something I have much exposure to in the USA, my exposure and experience is with the AR platform.

    • @woodsghost9088
      @woodsghost9088 ปีที่แล้ว

Simple manual of arms. But if you are already trained on the AR, stick with your training. Or learn a new skill.
Real AKs run well in austere conditions. As do a few other rifles, like the G3. Some ARs hold up well under similar conditions.
The AK is more available outside the US, so is a good choice for those living outside the US. This is regionally dependent. But spare parts and institutional knowledge is greater outside the US.
Some AKs can fold their stock. This may or may not be important to you. It's important to many people living in conflict zones.
In my experience, 7.62 kills things better (faster, harder) than 5.56 or 5.45, though the latter 2 both work. 12ga slugs work really good. 155mm is best.
The AK can stand up better to being used as a hand to hand weapon than the AR. Real AKs can.
The AK has better longevity and durability than the M16/M4 family. But that is a fact few would live long enough to take advantage of. You don't notice until after tens of thousands of rounds.
Those are the advantages of the AK I know of. I like the AK best. I am sad I no longer have one.

I just cheat and use an optic. With the ammo I shoot, I can zero at 25 yards and that zero also coincides with ~300 yards +/- a few inches. I have to hold low at 100 and 200 yards to get center mass impacts. This works for me as I generally shoot longer distances and being able to use the Eotech reticle for ranging at 400 and 500 yards is seamless.

400m~ hit is for AK-74, AKM battle zero is ~300m.

I'm curious if maybe AK's have the seemingly inherent "bent barrel" found on the Chinese Type 81's, after seeing how offset your front sight was on your ak74?

My front sight drum on my WASR is pretty much siezed up. I've adjusted it in the past, but it needs readjustment and the magna tool isn't working, it slips off when I torque it before the drum budges.

AKs are a great system, but definitely not designed for optics. Good luck getting a cheek weld with an optic above the irons. Which, of course, is where your eye was defined to be level.

How many people used windage in combat I wonder? Not complaining, sounds pretty nifty for shooting down range, it's just that it sounds overengineered for some Soviet grunt type
