Glad to see yoh promoting the use of headspace gauges. It is definately important and too many people claim it as being not necessary, especially in the AR world. Headspace measures from the bolt face to the datum line (about halfway down the shoulder of the casing where the casing bottoms out on the chamber). Always good to have a go, No-go, and field gauge.
My first true experience in building an AK (Hungarian AMD 65) happened 4 years ago. Had built plenty AR's but putting together a QUALITY AK required lots of PROPER work and TOOLS! I have a friend who is a very experienced AK builder who schooled my son and I on how to do it correctly with QUALITY parts, and yes that included the choice or rivets and proper drilling procedures with jigs as well as head spacing and proper fitament of parts. After the building was complete, we then accurized the barrel. This AK is a tack driver! This by far has been the build I am most proud of. After watching your AK buyers guide, I have to say, I had no idea on what to look for in an AK. As I was watching, I was checking mine for the things you were highlighting. Looks like I lucked out as mine has solid mag lock up, all rivets are flush n straight. The trussel? Appears to be forged. Barrel is straight, sights are good. The bullet has 1/4" spacing from casing when inserted into the business end of the barrel. I really appreciate you making this video. It has educated me on future purchases. Ciao
I think its worth mentioning (especially for new AK buyers coming from ARs) optics options. You alluded to it, but if you want optics you should know that your options are limited if you dont buy a rifle with a side scope mount. Many of the cheapies wont have that. I think it's worth pointing out to newbies!
Heh, I’m sure you meant “AK guy” yourself, but now I’m imagining a sentient AK sitting on the table, having a strong inner-personal realization about one of the parts that make him up.

@@Odd_Ball69 damn for $200 more you could get an arsenal slr107. it's what i have and holy shit she's a beaut. for under a g get a wasr or a zpap. both of those will do you just fine. just do what brandon says in the video when you go ak shopping. only problems with the wasr is the wood is usually junk so you may want to replace it but maybe you dont care and it'll be fine for you. with the zpap it is yugo so you must get yugo furniture if you want to replace it. both great guns you just have to check them before you buy to make sure a shitty one didnt get past qc. don't worry too much i havent seen that many shitty ones but keep an eye out you never know. imo zpap and wasr are the only cheap ak's worth a damn but if you decide to ignore everything i say, just don't ignore this: stay away from io and century arms (wasr is the only century gun i recommend for whatever reason it's the only good gun they make imo)

Arsenal makes some of the best AKs you can find in the US today. My personal favorite is the SLR-106 side folder in 5.56, but the SLR-107 is also amazing.
I bought my first AK not knowing anything about AK's... I just assumed they were all tough as nails. After being berated by the internet and doing some research myself, I invested in a headspace gauge. It closed on the "no-go" gauge, which doesn't mean it's immediately dangerous, but it was still too close for comfort. I'm sure it was only a matter of time before it closed on a field gauge. I won't say exactly what 𝑹ifle I h𝑨d, but it'𝑺 safe to say I'll steer clear of them from now on.
*What to look for* in an AK-47/74: - buy an Arsenal - buy a VEPR - buy an East German AK - and my favorite, buy any Polish AK *What NOT to buy:* - any American made AK (buy an AR if you want Made in the USA) - WASRs/VSKAs Easy to say if you are not in the gun industry ; )
It's nice to see a company like riley defense switching from a cast trunnions to a forged trunnions and bolt and bolt carrier and still having the rifle under 800 bucks.
-Be me -Live in Canada with draconian gun laws -cant buy an ak, cant even buy a look alike -Sees this video detailing key points to check when shopping for a rifle I cannot legally own *I MUST REMEMBER EVERY PIECE OF INFO DESCRIBED HERE*
The WASR is my first AK. I struggled at first to put the mags in because the mag well's right side was slightly bulgier than the other. This caused my mags to tilt during loads and often not fit. Then I took it to a gunsmith and had that magwell issue fixed. Now I can put a mag in almost effortlessly almost any time.
Some aks were imported with a 10-round magazine that would not interchange with the 30 rounders the Magwell was under sized then at a later date were adapted to except the 30 round mag by opening up the mag well and sometimes they didn't do a very good job especially Harry home builder
When I saw the title "what to look for" I like the part about the rivets because he described how to hold up he rifle and physically look at it then he started talking about cast trunnions I thought he was gonna tell us how to spot cast trunnions on a rifle by looking at it, not by reading he box or taking the sellers word for it
My very first firearm was a WASR-10. I bought it used for $300 with my very first tax return in the spring of '08 when I was 18. God, I miss that rifle.
if you will want to mount an optic or two, make sure it has the side rail. if you want to shoot alot get the 47, the 74 ammo is not always easy to find. There are people who make custom stocks and switching your stuff is part of the fun of having an AK.
NEVER miss a video, Brandon. When I visited OHIO, I had a chance to view some ORDINANCE one of my buddies was building. I noted that his rifle WORKS but wasn't pretty.

SAIGA is made in the same mill in Izhmash that AK is made, it's just a sports version. I would definitely prefer to buy the OG Made in Russia AK. Where did you get yours though? Last time I checked, US banned all of Russia made guns :/

One of my best friends is a big gun enthusiast, he modified his Saiga to look like a reak AK-74M3 (minus full-auto receiver). I think he replaced sports style trigger to the military one, installed pistol grip, better buttstock and added a muzzle brake, Picatinny rail, laser sight, and flashlight. It was a really accurate and smooth action gun after he modified it.
@9.55 people are worried about aftermarket parts fitment... That's Easy. Don't junk-up or Bubba an AK with aftermarket junk. There's a reason these rifles were made in the quantity that they were. They are right when they leave the Arsenal! I had a friend Bubba an AK with a bunch of junk. After about a year, he was talking about how he never shoots it and picked up mine. He said how 'handier' my rifle was. He had thrown away the factory parts and I had to find him a regular furniture set. Restored to stock configuration, he now loves his AK. Don't Bubba AKs, or any guns...
I hate to say, this is a pretty rough time to shop for an AK. I hope it works out. I would normally tell you a Century Arms gun is a good basic entry AK. Arsenal is your better bet if you have the $ and want a quality AK. Avoid anything by I.O. Inc. Be ready to spend about $1k on the low end these days.
Really helpful video. Been looking at buying an AK for the past few months to begin expanding my collection. Pretty much every gun I have is bolt action or lever action and I need a good gun for the boogaloo. Really like the claymore in the background as well.
Things i look for in addition to the rivets, canted components, cast parts rifling condition, and headspace. 1 peening on the bolt lugs, bolt carrier (back and the guide lug channel), and on the trunnion. 2 condition of the magwell, also how a standard mag fits including the front trunnion where the front of the mag sits. 3 rusty parts espcially where parts meet and wear to chrome lined surfaces such as the front face of the piston. 4 straight barrels. Ive seen a few barrels where the front trunnion was mialigned and tweaked downwards a few degrees. These rifles still shot fine, but front end furniture fit funny. Im not scared to say i first saw this on a century build with some quite shoddy rivets on the front trunnion as well. 5 smoothness of the action. As well as tight bolt carrier to rail interface. It is normal for the bolt carrier to ride over the hammer a bit when racking without the trigger depressed. Also that the bolt carrier can lift out the back without too much effort but also that the cutouts arent too large either. I saw a beautiful gun on an nds reciever that you couldnt get the bolt carrier out without prying on it. 5 bent center support. This can happen if you drop the hammer on it repeatedly. A mistake i myself have made a number of times. Some are beat up like crazy tho. 6Wear to the ejector. Although ive rarely seen them damaged. 7 overall condition of the surplus parts. Pitting of these parts that have been refinished can tell you if the gun the kit was made from was ridden hard and put away wet. One of the things i like about polish and hungarian guns is the beauty of their machine work. Pitting can ruin that. Other guns like maadis and chicoms can be considerably rougher. Not that it makes them worse guns in operation, just less pretty imo. 8 Loose or super tight safety selector movement (can be corrected fairly easily tho usually 9 how the receiver fits into the front and rear "trunnions" sometimes they dont curl into them properly. Its mostly cosmetic. But it dont look right when its done poorly.

Century BFT 47 ! Don’t care what you say but century got there act together with this one ! Putting a lot of rounds through mine and no problems so far . Bulged trunion , chrome barrel , threaded for brakes parts hardened to jack hammer standards . They finally listened and solved many problems! And at least they have life time warranty that your soviets don’t! Might as well buy America 700 dollars!
I find this very interresting with the new security situation in europe. Knowing what AK is good to pick off a dead russian soldier is surprisingly relevant information.
Just ordered one from gunbroker lmao. Took longer to research the best AK to get than anything else. Definitely seems that Zastava has the best overall reviews.
Bought a C39V2 with magpul furniture as my first gun paid $700 came with a case, 2 mags, and like 250 rounds of Tula. Ive had it for a few months now and I fuckin love it but still haven’t done a headspace test. I’ve put 310 rounds through it myself and the previous owner put about 800, and so far it looks to be doing pretty damn good. don’t 100% know everything but am on my way of learning for sure, I cant wait to get my hands on another one already. My wallet is upset but there’s a smile on my face so it was worth it.
First AK purchased was a KUSA KR 103. I sold it and hated myself since so I went out and purchased a Zastava Zpap M70 and now life is good 👍😊 I got my balls back 😎
Great information, people think the AK platform is just indestructible and will work no matter what, and really AK's are pretty forgiving for the most part, but there have been millions of them made, hundreds of thousands made from people who had no business building a firearm in the least bit, not knowing the importance of headspacing ext.... this is a great video explaining these things, good job Brandon.
Been watching you for a short time now with all the meme videos and thought I'd look into getting into AKs. After this video i think I just want to get into a bottle and wait for armagedon to show up. Thanks for killing my curiosity. Seriously though. I'm going to have to learn a whole new platform before I actually go purchase an AK and truly appreciate your insight and knowledge. It's going to help knowing what to look for. But definitely going to look at something AK based and very modern, nothing surplus. Thanks so much for giving me food for thought and a reason to buy another kind of rifle. Love your videos and keep up the great content.
I went to a gun show last weekend and there were a fair number of AKs for sale. My friend was kind of curious why I wasn't interested in any of them, 99% were Riley defense. I'm left-handed and really enjoy having an intact face and neck.
@@ethangrover5382they have great improved in quality. Dunno what this other person is talking about other than the fact that early gens of rak47 were poor.
My first and maybe last AK is the KUSA KR-103 SFS. Love it. Very high quality, chrome-lined CHF barrel, casted trunnion, all parts look like correctly and well made. The only thing AK snobs like to put down is the milled billeted BCG. That’s no problem for me. There is a video where someone fired over 5,000 rds out of his KR and no problem. The BCG has wear, but nothing serious or out of the norm for regular firing, especially is some of the rounds were corrosive. The fact of the matter is, the QUALITY of the metal in this case matters so much more. I can guarantee you if the billeted BCG uses high quality steel vs a Casted BCG that uses low quality steel, then the casted one will break quicker on you. Edit: two or three years down the line, once I get all the guns I need now, I may plunk down money for an Arsenal 5.54 AK-74.
I bet you do have some context or pretext for them. If you've played any games or watched movies, discard the information from them and try this: Imagine a rifle that was never designed to be used in the role rifles are filling today. It is not a DMR. It fires a meaty projectile that punches through more effectively than 5.56/.223 - but this can change beyond about 300m or 400y with a 16" barrel. Do yourself a favor, and buy the Galil Ace Gen 2 - it fixes inherent accuracy issues(mostly) and brings the AK into true modernity. Or, get Zastava.
@@BeamMonsterZeus Good choices. My WASR10 is admittedly ugly, but who cares----it's a champ, no issues. But Galil is something I'm still considering, and the Zastava m70 is awesome.
@@christopherrobin7776 At the end of the day, I will welcome all AKs in my household so long as they're built correctly. But we all have our favorites, huh? I got myself a hybrid of Romanian and modern American parts that I keep very close - it's basically an AK with three huge upgrades over standard fare, with the trigger, barrel, and foregrip all a notch above milspec AKM from RUS. Electric tape on the front sight post and a flashlight zip-tied to the handguard retainer clasp on the front to illuminate said front sight post and actually be functional. The M77 I have is in pieces at the moment, otherwise it'd be on the wall right now. AKs are magnificent to look at and customize, and if you have the patience to have read all of this, you are definitely an AK guy.
Well technically you can legally buy a gun but only one or two models of a revolver are legal and only rich people can afford them. Everything else is prohibited
Wasr or WBP would be my 1st recommendation. Or maybe a kit build from atlantic. Stay away from RAS-47, IO, or that polish import hellpup that is not actually a combloc build. Thanks for the vids Brandon, maybe try casting your own trunnion and do a video of it blowing up with proof loads lol
I have a Romanian wasr. It runs like a champ. ONLY ISSUE. It is picky with mags! Other than that runs like a AK! Got mine for $400 out the door extra mags etc in 2008 I think. Maybe 2009 🤔
why not get a wasr? which is the same price and actually good. century is a horrible gun manufacturer unfortunately but yhe romanian imports are solid.
I HAD AN SKS, TRICKED OUT WITH COLLAPSIBLE STOCK AND ABOUT A THOUSAND RNDS OF 7.69X39 , AND A 12 GA. PUMP SHOTGUNWITH ABOUT 500 RNDS , AND THEY WETE STOLEN AT THE PLACE THAT I USED TO LIVE!! I TURNED IT IN , BUT OF COURSE NOTHING EVER CAME OF IT !! I CALLED A BUNCH OF THE PAWN SHOPS WITHIN A RADIUS OF 70 MILES ALL AROUND , BUT NEVER HEARD ANYTHING FROM ANY OF THEM !! IT WAS REALLY SWEET !! HAD A RED DOT ON IT ALONG WITH A LASER, IT WAS A GREAT RIFLE AND I LOVED IT !!!
The three most important rules when selecting an AK pattern rifle; Step one: make sure that the manufacturer is either Sako or Valmet. Step two: the riffle should have aperture sights. Readiness for side mounted optics is a plus. Step three: the rifle should be in 7.62x39 caliber.
If you are on a budget, an AK and 762 by 39 under $700 is just what you need. Maintain it and keep it in perfect working condition and it will serve its purpose in any condition
I ended up getting a Yugo not knowing that it wasn't able to accept most parts until about a week later. I only swapped the stock for the Magpul Zhukov folder and the muzzlebrake for a cheap AK-74 styled one, did wonders for muzzle-climb. Personally kind of like the weird plastic pistol grip on it, as for the handguard I'm more just disappointed Magpul didnt follow through on making a Yugo compatible version of their existing AK handguard like they apparently had said they would. The handguard itself isn't awful, not good either just... Ok-ish. I'm currently waiting for Texas Weapons Systems to make more of their Gen3 Yugo railed handguards, I just want a little front grippy boi to hold onto like most of my rifles. In the end I'm overall happy with it and expect it to last a long time.
If anybody still reads this make sure if you buy a parts kit made AK update the basics with new recoil assembly, recoil spring, check the bolt, bolt carrier and fire control group for excessive wear as these are usually full auto AKs originally and parts will be worn out from thousands and thousands of rounds. Ask how I know. Because Ive bought numerous older zastava and cugir AKs that were well used before being reassembled with a new receiver for US assembly. Nothing like your recoil assembly coming apart when everything is hot as hell.

Did you also start with plastic magazines?
Some aks were imported with a 10-round magazine that would not interchange with the 30 rounders the Magwell was under sized then at a later date were adapted to except the 30 round mag by opening up the mag well and sometimes they didn't do a very good job especially Harry home builder

I'm thankful for videos like these as I begin my search for a good first AK
I hate to say, this is a pretty rough time to shop for an AK. I hope it works out. I would normally tell you a Century Arms gun is a good basic entry AK. #AKGNOTIFICATIONSQUAD
8 Loose or super tight safety selector movement (can be corrected fairly easily tho usually
9 how the receiver fits into the front and rear "trunnions" sometimes they dont curl into them properly. Its mostly cosmetic. But it dont look right when its done poorly.
Things I look for: a 1 to 10 list that only gets to 9.. XP

Finally. I've been wanting to buy my first AK for a while but don't know the first thing about them.

The three most important rules when selecting an AK pattern rifle;
Step one: make sure that the manufacturer is either Sako or Valmet.
Step two: the riffle should have aperture sights. Readiness for side mounted optics is a plus.
Step three: the rifle should be in 7.62x39 caliber.
And finally Step four: don’t listen to ya…😂😂😂😂
First big tip. Don't buy io. Second. Century arms American made aks that are new are fine. Third tip. Buy a wasr above all others
You should do a revision of this video given the options now available out there.
