  • The Pedal is one of the most important tools at the piano to create soundeffects and volume. In this video I am sharing 3 Tips and Tricks to improve the control of the pedal. The talking points are timing, vertical movements and practicing with concert shoes.

      I don’t really use any shoes I use my legs but u don’t use them I have a keyboard without a pedal and u might wonder why I am watching this, I just wanna check out the vid :P

      When I have a recital, I try to wear shoes with a very thin sole (when I wear one that is not, I feel like I'm pressing the pedal all the time!) 😂😂😂. Congratulations for all your work, your content is amazing. 🖤

    Hi I'm from Belgium. Great video, I only started the piano, so using the pedal often wrong. (Push to early, stop to quick, etc), but best feeling is with my slippers feeling it through the feet.

    I prefer no shoes. And I felt validated when I attended a concert by Alice Ott and she was barefoot!

    I noticed you were using una corda with the sustain at the beginning of the video. This is something I do very often. I feel It makes it cleaner and more smooth. I also don't always press the pedal all the way down, but sort of halfway.

    Great tips! I'm a socks man. When I was taking lessons I wore shoes, which I didn't like, but there was so much to think about at the lesson, that I got over it. Thanks for your instruction.

    When I was in school, some of the ladies would use high heels, only because when the piano is on the roller, their foot couldn't reach well. The heels gave them better anchor against the floor.

    Well, piano is my second instrument, but when I do play it I prefer just wearing socks

      When you will ever play a concert, here is a tip: practice beforehand with your concert shoes on. Otherwise is feels soo weird to play with shoes especially under stress

    My daughters both play the piano and always practice in an oxford heel. There's something very mesmerising about watching the toe of their shoe going up and down on the pedal, using their stiletto heel as a pivot.

    is the opposite for me, i love wearing heels when using the pedals, is a lot easier to use them, but it could be that i'm 1.58 haha

    Whenever I sew I always use the pedal backwards, so pressing down with my heel - and I’m so used to it now I wish I could do the same with the piano lol 😂

    It’s amazing how these concepts are so universal. 25 years ago I used to commute into NYC with a pair of dress shoes in my backpack for my lesson.

    I always practise with just socks on at home. But then whenever I'm somewhere else and sit down at a piano, it sounds weird, because of my shoes!

    I've always wanted to hear the Chopin octave etude with the pedal down inbetween every octave. The timing is ridiculous at that speed but I think it's possible.

    The most useful pedaling technique to me was one I learned in my freshman year of college: half-pedaling and flutter-pedaling. My teacher could flutter pedal so fast it looked like his foot had a continuous nervous twitch!

      @@STANIS-LA-ROCHELLE their answer is bullshit. You can totally start again at 25 and get really good results. Even more so if you actually have a prior experience playing. Go for it, or you'll regret it later in your life

      Just look for pedal symbols in the sheet or watch a performance

      @@twenktwenk9562 Not true. Many of the pedal markings, even in the Urtext scores, were actually added by the 1st edition editor/publisher. Not Chopin himself.

      Depends on what kind of sound you're looking for, as in your interpretation. Can either lift it right on the 3rd beat as your fingers sink into the keys to play the chord, or you could do legato pedalling (changing the pedal on the 1st beat after you play the low bass note while your finger is still holding on to the key).
