    1:00 Don't always rely on your finger action - train your whole body
    3:06 Lifting your fingers too high - a waste of time and energy
    4:47 Picking too fast a tempo - your inner ear hears slower than the actual tempo, so dial it down a bit

      I always hear things faster than they actually are so my teacher is always telling me to slow down 😂

  • @DrQuizzler
    @DrQuizzler ปีที่แล้ว +87

    I've seen that speed thing too, where you think you're playing slower than you're actually playing. It's even worse if nerves make you rush unconsciously. That's one upside to recording everything, where you get to hear your playing how an audience hears it and be reminded to slow down, and to control your tempo.

      @Chopin-Etudes-Cosplay ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I often have the opposite problem, where I think I’m playing fast and then I hear the recording and it’s not so fast.. 😔 In any case recording is a great reality check.

      For sure -- I'm just a beginner/early intermediate but the piece I last tackled has a very fast section (for me anyway) that took me over a month to get up to speed. It wasn't as clean as I wanted once I did, but then I was surprised to find I'd actually been playing it a good deal faster than the professional recording I was using as a reference! So I slowed it down and could play it much more cleanly while still sounding decently fast in recordings.

    I've noticed the same thing about my inner speed, compared to when I record myself and play it back. I tend to play pieces faster than what I think I am. I will start to incorporate hand motions into my technique, as I have never seen that broken down in slower motions. Thanks for the tips!

    Hi Annique, Merci für das coole Video! It helps to hear about the techniques how you approach high tempo! I am in the situation where I support a Suzuki Violin class on the piano in class to prepare for concerts and also for a Volk music concert itself. The violinist who teaches the workshop is very spontaneous and likes to improvise - that makes me nervous, it requires me to be prepared to change plans at any moment. I am not a professional piano player. I used to sing in a choir, but I am not used to adapt my piano play to other musicians! When I play with the kids during lessons, I struggle sometimes to create and uphold a clear tempo structure for them. Sometimes the violin teacher initiates a faster tempo than I am able to play😅 when I recorded a practice session, it sounded really wobbly - far from crisp🙈 This video and your video on how to use the metronome and create inner tempo references really gave me valuable tipps on how to improve around tempo. I hope to bring myself up to speed until the concert in August🤞🏽 - thank you so much and greeting from Biel Switzerland❤

    Thanks for the first tip. It helps me a lots. I always thought the torso movement was something aesthetic for profi and not for newbie like me until I hit my speed block at moonlight sonata 3rd movement and found this video. Simply freeing my upper body movement increases accuracy at higher speed in less than a day.

    I definitely notice that weird speed perception, I remember a few weeks ago I was trying hard to push my speed envelope on this particular piece and I just couldn't, so I dropped the piece for a few weeks and came back to it later, but then I watched my recordings that I made during that time and I was genuinely shocked at how fast I was going, so I decided to play it slower and it worked out perfectly!

    Very insightful and critical understanding of piano playing. You would be a stellar piano pedagogue, i mean professor. You just explained something i had not consciously realized. This video is going to change my slow practice completely as i was not consciously trying to memorize more than finger position on the keyboard which is missing all those movements which i was learning indirectly and slowly not consciously but now i realize their importance in memorizing them and amplifying them in slow practice. Thank you Annique

    Hello, does anybody knows a good ressource online to have good tips for playing piano at an advanced level? I feel like I learnt the piano (with my teacher) in a very practical way (play the right notes on the right rhythm) but not about how my arm should move to allow me more energy or things like this video explains. I'd like to hear more about piano technique actually, not just playing the right notes. I started violin last year and there are so much more things I actually learnt verbally to be able to have an audible sound. Piano seems easier but at a high level, it's not! So I'd like to learn more about it.
    Thank you for the tips here it's a very good start for me!

    im not hater , racist or anything else plus im fan of this channel and enjoying this content also im not trying to bully anyones comment but... how to speed up?? the most stupid question to ask in the youtube seriously how to speed up??? i agree these 3 common mistake and they all are right but does no matter how much mistake u do just practise and eventually u will find out how ur body works ... play slow play zigzag play with different speed play hard play soft etc ... no one goes throught succesfull way without hard times and there is not going to be ez ways for anyone to reach succesfulity in such a profession when u need practice and it does not depend on any lucky if u just dont try to solve any problem and such a easy problem by urself then u will always start finding easy ways and one day when u dont find one u will fail so hard practice is the key of speeding up and first step just learn piece completely and in conpletely i mean when u can play it while sleeping too and next one day when u will rlly face real problem u will easily handle that by yourself and not ask it in youtube... im apologizing again i was not meaning anything toxic or angry and pls noone get mad at me its just my personal opinion... biggest comment vol.1

    Only mistake I think we do especially newbies ... not giving enough repetition that a certain finger situation or notes pattern requires. Everything else whatever u say will come naturally to u whether u heard it somewhere or not. Be it circular motion or keeping finger low.. And every newbie has to go these phases whether he likes it or not. Because at first u cant even play if u try keeping all fingers low to the keys. And later stages same thing u wont be able to do things seemlessly or even moderately faster tempos if u dont move your hand like that. As u move faster or like doing extended chord rolls like CEGC u wont even be able to do it if u dont move your hand circularly in a way I guess. So most things comes naturally when u try do it. Main thing is do u give it enough repeatition. And with repeatition I mean over and over in same sitting. It wont give u much bennifit if u repeat 2 or four times per day.. like even this extended C chord roll. Or whatever roll when u skip one or two notes inbetween your fingers or fingers inbetween your notes.. whatever the case may be. U need to do it over and over to get things smooth. So better to concentrate on few things in a day and giving it enough repetition that trying covering all and doing just few repeats. That can only bring smoothness or speed or timing to your play I guess. But all this is easier said than done. U need to be ready to get over some sore feeling to achieve that. U cant climb tough rock or even whatever by just thinking this good or that technique. U need to be on the road for that. Your mistake will itself teach u whatever technique u need according to your own body or hand build in this case.
    But thinking about doing 100 or 200 repeatition is easier said than done. U will find every kinda excuse to avoid it. And who dont always reach the summit.
    But on final note it just my bickering I myself dont do it that passionately! 😜🤪😝 Bye folks! 😁
    But anyway there is some truth in it too.. only thing is do we have that kinda motivation level or determination in ourself. I SIMPLY DON'T... but then I dont aspire to be some mozart or even musician. Its just my hobby thing.. and I certainly wont like to hang myself by neck for just simple hobby. Should I? 😀🤗 But yours ambitions or situation might differ. So its u who have to think whats good for u. But u wint be expert in rock climbing or whatever unless u give enough repetition or determined to toll for it. Signing off Jai Bhole! 🙏

    Maybe feeling you are playing slightly slower than reality is like being in a car accident. When you're more stressed time seems to slow down. When my car spun around on ice once several times on a hill, each rotation seemed to take so long. I've heard people say this exact same phenomenon many times when in dangerous situations. "It only lasted a couple of minutes, but it seemed like ten", etc. Might be a way we evolved to deal with high stress better in the moment. Anyway, yeah I think I did the same when it came to preforming.

    I wish I had your problem - when I record myself, I'm always *slower* than I think I am 😕

      Same here. My teacher is always telling me, once I’ve learnt a piece, it needs to go faster. To my ears it always sounds fast enough, I’ll have to record myself! Thank you for the videos.

    You're right. Audience does perceive tempo differently than you as a performer.

    I'm learning the Friska part of Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody no 2. I can't get the right tempo because the left hand jumps are just too hard (and fast) for me, but I guess that's just a matter of practice.

      tiffanny poon's tip for doing jumps was to practice slowly, but do the actual jump as quick as possible, but waiting to press the keys at the correct time, if that makes any sense

    This is true. One mustn't only concentrate on one's fingers. In fact, I have a little secret. I use my toes. They're the fastest.

    I honestly think Chopin is more enjoyable for the pianist playing rather than the audience listening [ especially a non pianist listener]… 🎹

    Once again, there is no generalization for playing fast, it is purely on experience and experiment. How can you play certain passages that other piano players can not? Try different positions, even if they feel strange at first, the traditions of playing piano should be rejected and experience should be learned. Ask yourself: What can I do with the seat height? What can I do with the straight down curved fingers? Or straight fingers touching down? Or flat fingers? How can I reproduce a speed comfortably? Observe: what are the requirements for that position?
    Furthermore, I believe that a contrite heart is the key towards playing the piano beautifully and speed is subject to a contrite heart as well. There is no secret evidently but experience and belief and Faith in the playing of the songs, confident that each stroke is strong.

    Fast yes, but unfortunately only a small, dry and expressionless tone. Dynamics are completely missing: Everything is somehow just mezzo forte. Probably rubber or custard hands (hypermobility disorder) preventing the instrument from sounding full.

    Concentrate on wrist, elbow, shoulder ... movements. Sound wrestling advise WWE. I understand why I suck at playing fast now. I'm confusing it with professional wrestling! 🤣🤣😂😂

    It also depends on your natural hand mechanics. Not all hands are projected to play fast.
