I’m guessing you’re a student? Online teaching jobs typically pay about $20+ an hour. Cambly pays $10.20. This is well below minimum wage for many people. For example, minimum wage in NYS is $15/hour. Add taxes… roughly 30% of our teaching income goes to our taxes. That gives you about $7.14 an hour- half of minimum wage. To make a decent living, you have to work like 80 hours a week. Most people won’t keep a job long term if they’re going to be paid half of minimum wage. Nothing is going on with cambly…. It’s just how it’s just the pay structure doesn’t keep teachers around for too long in a lot of cases.
Thanks for the video. I would like to apply but am wondering what the requirements are for the internet speed test. I don't want to apply and not pass the test....we will have fibre op soon...not sure if I should wait until then. Any insight is much appreciated....thankyou!
@IsLaMarie777 Not the original OP, but think I can answer -- You can test your current internet speed yourself. Also, it usually takes a few weeks to hear back (not always) so if you're getting fibre op soon, you can fill in the time by applying. Also, also -- when you log in to tutor, Cambly checks your internet speed every time anyway, because a lot of tutors travel, and they have to know that you have a good connection wherever you happen to be. (So here's an idea!! If you are having problems, apply from a local high-speed site -- like a library or cyber cafe, just to get the process going. Good luck with your application!)
Are you required to have on your video during the lessons on Cambly? You keep saying "Cambly pay little" $10.20. JC!! What if you had to teach a 25 minutes class plus have to submit lesson notes for it be considered a completed lesson for $1.55?
Yes- you are required to have your video on. $10.20 is a low pay. It’s well less than minimum wage where I am at least. A 25 minute lesson for $1.55?! Who is paying that?! Disgraceful!
Examples of what would make Cambly worth it. Say your a retiree living on Social Security in a 3rd world country. Cambly would be nice additional income.
Yes it is true Cambly is good to fill in the gaps in your schedule for a few extra bucks and they do pay on time. But, if you are a serious teacher, I would stay away. Professional treatment of teachers is quite deplorable. Poor email support, not answering emails in a timely manner. Super tutors tend to dominate students classes during priority hours, locking less popular tutors out. Teachers can get banned from Cambly social forums for the slightest unfavorable comments. and here is the big one, 3 years ago all California based teachers(hundreds of teachers) were fired in a huge class action law suit against independent contractors. This should give teachers and idea of their level of commitment to their employees. I realize it is just hearsay (believe me or not) it did happen.
The California thing is more of a political thing and not really a Cambly thing. I've talked about how I feel about Cambly being your "go-to" since day 1. When the Double Reduction policy came into play, all of these ESL teachers flocked to Cambly, which I couldn't believe so many teachers would be okay with such little pay.
Are they still going?! Interesting....they owe all the people who helped them start up (all of the staff that were supposed to be on payroll, including myself) about a year's salary...which we will surely never see.
Thanks so much for replying to my comment. Thanks!! I'm going to make my video in the morning. I've been somewhat hesitant, but I must try. By the way I love your channel and I have recently joined your group regarding teachers. I love what you're teaching I plan on focusing more on your videos etc to help create and build my online teaching career. I have MS and live in the Philippines and really need it. Plus I like to teach. I use to teach private music lessons for over 35 years on and off so I actually enjoy teaching. I think it is an incredible process. Thank you for inspiring me! Best regards!@@JillianShanahan
hello Mrs Jillian I just saw your video on Cambly I applied but everything on my profile got approved but when I checked my application status it says in the meantime you can check your profile. Have any advice on this .
I noticed that a lot of tutor leave Cambly , it isn't easy to find another tutor that you feel comfortable with, anyone known what is happening?

@@JillianShanahan Actually, 17 cents a minute for each minute you talk to a student.
I use Cambly the same way you do. It’s to fill in the gaps.
A student guessed I was from Indonesia bc that’s where all the American teachers live

Thanks for catching that one for me!
@@JillianShanahan Hope my answer was good enough!
Cambly sound great for beginners, but what would you suggest as the next platform for teaching?
Adults or kids?

Does anyone know what happened to PH on Cambly? I emailed them but didn't really get anywhere..
PH as in priority hours?

Yes! That’s a good example. It’s not something you can live off of here
I'm a native English speaker but I'm from Uganda. Can i be considered if i apply as a tutor on Cambly?
Hey, yes you can, im a cambly tutor from Zimbabwe, goodluck.

I had something similar. I reached out to customer service and then was approved.

Hi Jill,
Is there a company I can work for where I can make at least $25 per hour???
Thanks in advance 🙏🏼
Honestly your best bet is to go independent! Most companies don’t lag that.
OR find a good marketplace (like outschool or allschool)
Dream on
Hey Jillian, you should do another "truth revealed" video on My Cool Class. The Online Co-op that sells snake oil to teachers.
Are they still going?! Interesting....they owe all the people who helped them start up (all of the staff that were supposed to be on payroll, including myself) about a year's salary...which we will surely never see.
Ty for the video
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, isn't there another English tutoring site called Native Cam?
You’re talking about Native Camp, I believe.
Can you do light editing for your intro video or is it frowned upon? For example just an edit between major segments of an intro outline.
You totally can!
