    Thank you, Charlie! Your video is spot on! I have been with Cambly for almost 11 months and agree with all your comments. Like you, this is added income for me. The flexibility is the number one attraction for me. I am retired and share time with my wife, mother, and a growing number of grandchildren. Cambly lets me work around these aspects of my life. Other sites pay more, yes, but you lose flexibility.

    I've been working on Cambly for nearly 6 months and it's been great for the most part but I can definitely say that the problems Charlie describes such as flashers and the like are a real thing.
    However in recent times Cambly has put more measures in place to monitor those issues and Tutors have the power to block or get these type of people permanently banned from the site.
    The pay isn't great but then again Cambly's only a side hustle for most of us and the money should be looked at as supplementary income that comes in handy.
    I just want to mention that currency differences and conversion rates vary from country to country.
    In Australia where I'm from $10.20USD per hour usually ends up being around $16-17AUD
    So what may seem like a measly amount to a Tutor in the US or the UK could actually be enough for a Tutor in Australia or New Zealand to pay their monthly mobile (cell) phone bill or to even do a small amount of grocery shopping.
    I work on Cambly 3 days a week and I've personally been able to do a small amount of grocery shopping and pay a minor bill with the money I get from Cambly (and that's without using any money from my main income)

    • @caravanlifenz
      @caravanlifenz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I was thinking too. Since it is in USD, that's NZD $15.70 for us in New Zealand, which is still below our minimum wage, but the working conditions and job security are better than a lot of the jobs we have here in NZ.

    I teach just Cambly Kids. Its all I wanted. The slightly higher pay rate is of course is slightly irrelevant because 'both' can be deemed as low pay. At least Cambly Kids is the higher pay rate. When you can get over the £8 odd. You are much less likely to have flashers when booked in with kids. If you have ever taught kids? then Cambly Kids is not difficult and I havnt needed to pull up a whiteboard yet? Lesson are easy to go through. Can definately recommend.

    A very informative video.
    We absolutely agree with you, Charlie, that teachers should get onto regular student reservation hours as quickly as possible.
    Cambly is a teaching company that we recommend to new teachers, that are just starting out as English teachers online.
    It's a great platform, where teachers can gain a lot of teaching experience very quickly.
    With so many teachers having chosen to teach online this past year, it is no wonder that online language schools have begun offering lower hourly wages. However, we see this trend gradually reversing as countries start opening up and more and more teachers begin looking to teach overseas- thus creating more demand for online teachers.
    We have subscribed to your channel and wish you every success for the future!

    There are some ESL platforms that are horrible to teachers. They treat their students like gods and their tutors like paupers. I'm asexual (no attraction to either gender), so I joined some of the LGBT forums for non-straight people, and there are always a few people looking for a fight. Hi Charlie thanks for this video Ive been looking into teaching online as a second income overseas. One thing I've noticed recently is there is a lot of Students recording the lessons and posting on their u tube accounts. Just concerned on privacy and if they are asking for permission to do this. Strictly speaking there is no such thing as Cambly adults. It's just known as regular Cambly I believe as there is no minimum age to use it. As for what you actually have to do that is a good question which should be a lot more obvious. It is marketed to potential tutors as a conversation platform, but it is possible that you might have to do a bit of teaching using cambly lessons or get calls from people with a very poor level making conversation near impossible.

    Thanks for talking about your experience working with Cambly! I have a question for you. I watched a TH-camr who currently works with Cambly and he say's that he just ends up talking to people on this platform and not actually teaching English. Do we need to have a structured curriculum to follow or would we be connected to people who just want to practice speaking English? I have always worked in the corporate sector and don't have teaching experience but I can speak fluently. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @rickyp6815
      @rickyp6815 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well..kinda both. Some people - a lot of people - just want to practice their English and you are supposed to make corrections. If it was always like that and they had a reasonable ability to have a conversation then the low rate of pay would be OK. but you do get students who use it as an alternative to doing courses with 'real' langauge schools too. They may select a Cambly lesson where there are some slides to click through - quality varies - or even want English test practice eg: IELTS/TOEFL. You can decline to do the latter I believe. Another thing that can make it a bit painful is when you get callers with very low to non existant English. You can reject these (and kids) if they request a reservation, but if it is a 'PH' then you should take all calls.

      Yes, it was just this video that had audio problems, rest assured it was an issue with my camera mic made worse with an error in post-editing, the mic used on my headphones when teaching never raised a complaint. I still wanted to get it out there way back then and it seems it's still been useful content for many :) I've been lucky enough to upgrade my audio since, and I'm sorry if captioning hasn't worked on this video to make it accessible for you, it's something I'm striving to improve for everyone. Every day is a school day
