depending on the price the miyoo mini + is very good, it's pretty easy to say that it has the most polished software and a very active community backing it up, the only thing i dislike about it is the screen, the colours are kinda washed up

I don't worry about any software limitations since I intend to swap it out with GarlicOS 2.0 when that releases fully. Any problems the stock OS has are just temporary until that period of time, really. I mean there's no guarantee that all of these issues *are* software limitations, as you mentioned, and certainly no guarantee GarlicOS will cover all the necessary features properly, at least not in earlier iterations which will probably require some fine-tuning after launch, but as far as I can see, it's just a matter of time and I am a very patient man.

Not a priority, anyway, I just wanted to see what games could be made playable out of the selection I have. The better an idea I have of their playability on the system, the sooner I can decide if those versions are worth keeping and clear some extra space on my microSD card. But it doesn't really matter, I can wait for the full release. Hopefully it's ready soon. Looks like it probably won't release by the end of this year, if that recent post from BlackSeraph is any indication, but that's okay. Shit happens. I'm excited, though. I also assume there's no wifi support in the alpha, because I don't see any options, which means I'll probably just stick to fiddling with Tetris before I get into any of the bigger PS1 titles I wanted to play since I want to play those with RetroAchievements on. It was kind of a pain to even enter the information since any movement of the d-pad added a question mark to the text line for my username or password, meaning I had to constantly delete it as I moved across RetroArch's keyboard UI.
I investigated the H700 chip a little bit and it is fascinating, while it is not very powerful in general, it can do H.265/VP9/AVS2 4K@60fps decoding. It is probably because this chip was originally made for a projector and I guess they didn't sell too many projectors.

Ones implementing sticks along with the d-pad would be nice. I'm not likely to wait for them, though, and I don't like the look of vertical designs with sticks, at least not nearly as much as I like the RG35XX Plus, so I'm probably pretty set on what I want. But I guess there are a lot of more expensive options that fit my criteria and open up more gaming options, so if I ever decide to upgrade, I'll have plenty to choose from. I don't see it happening, though, because it's really the budget price that sells this for me. $50 for the base version and now this $70 all-around improvement makes it a pretty definitive sell. It's basically the cost of a modern triple A game, that's honestly a steal for a handheld with as many features as this. I mean I love Nintendo, their 3DS line of systems, and certainly they offer a lot of potential with their systems, but when that launched that was $250 and had no fucking games. This is a device you can easily install whatever you want on with great customizability right out of the box if you're willing to install custom firmware. Hi, thanks for the video! :D Can I ask you a question? Do you know why does Garlic 2.0 for RG35XX PLUS have to be installed and used together with the SD with the stock system? (I read the procedure on Black's Patreon page on the Garlic 2.0 post) Can't just the SD (or single or double) be used only with Garlic as happens with Garlic 1.x.x in the original RG35XX? Because we know that the proprietary SD card is of poor quality and should be changed immediately. But if you need the proprietary SD to boot the SD with Garlic (as I understand), if that then gets corrupted, you won't be able to use the one with Garlic either..
The stock SD has a file that will tell the system to look for the operating system on the second SD card (the bootloader). That's why you need to have both. If you are worried about the stock SD being bad, you could clone it with something like Rufus or clonezilla and then flash that image to a better card.
@@TakiUdon Thanks a lot for the answer! :D Yes, I understood the process, but so do you think it will remain like this, that is, with the use of the stock SD too? Do you think that in the future it will not be possible to use only the SD with Garlic as with the original RG35xx? Because if that were the case, yes, in that case it is better to clone the stock SD. But I was actually wondering why this time the boot process is like this compared to the original RG35XX which only needs the SD card with Garlic :)
I'm curious as well, does it have something to do with how garlic 2.0 works compared to 1.0. These are questions we should probably ask developer, but now you have peaked my interest as well! lolol
note the a53 cpu is 3years older than the a35, which is effectively a shrink of the a53 with better power efficiency. H700 performance likely to be similar at a given clock than the rk3266, be interesting to see a performance comparison with the r36s using the same emulator
Did they made improvements on the D-pad? My original 35xx always has accidental "ups" when i press to the right. I switched to the Miyoo Mini plus for that reason because it made me mad...
I was mind blown for a good 5 seconds with the short clip of LoZ running on that thing in the beginning. That was a baity cold open. Nice video nonetheless.
I bought myself an RG35xx a month ago. Now this comes out? Damn. So I need to upgrade, because my biggest issue with it is I cannot use RetroAchievements, nor my favorite SN30 Pro controller with it, without a dongle.
Glad I purchased the RG35XX plus today. I was thinking about miyo mini plus but it’s size is more smaller, and also about wifi support that lead me to purchase the latest model. Thanks for this review (I watched a-lot from other TH-cam videos too) before casting my order. Got it for $59.63 from ali express, free shipping to dubai 🇦🇪
Can you connect more than one Bluetooth controller? Would be nice to use as a little home console for 2 player SNES and PS1 games over HDMI. Kind of an Anbernic Switch.
Thanks. In your opinion, when it comes to an actual emulation use case, do you think that a RK3566 device can do more than this one assuming custom firmware is available ? I mean, is there a system which is out of reach for this one but that a RK3566 could handle, or a system which could get upscale while it would remain low res on this one ?
I have the rg35xx. I don't really care about the additional consoles this new one supports, but if they get the Bluetooth to work with headphones/earbuds that might sway me. Also the rounded corners on the dpad would be a welcome change.
It's BTv4.2, not even BTv5.0 so video playback will have a very noticeable latency, much less game audio output which requires at least BTv5.0 AND your earbuds/headphones having a dedicated "game/low latency" mode to make it a lot less noticeable.
Been thinking of getting my nephew and myself a retro handheld console. I might just order this and get my nephew the miyoo mini or the standard rg35xx
lol they do thats not what he was talking about they basicly dont suport wirless charging or super fast insta charging but litteraly anything with power coming out of it and a usb port will charge them
The fact that the dev of Garlic OS rushed to launch it for Plus on launch instead of launching for the OG stings even more knowing it doesn't even bring any benefit to the new device in comparison to the stock firmware. I know the dev is doing it for free in their free time but idk, feels like they mixed up priorities
If this had analog sticks I'd buy it. It kinda kills the portability if I need to carry around a controller just for that. I'll stick with my R36S simply for that reason. As I'm on the road (the main reason I use these portables), wifi isn't a priority but I do have the dongle set up and working for the very rare times I need it. Finally, HDMI is nice...but again defeats the reason for a portable in the first place. At the end of the day, it'll boil down to what you are actually buying these handhelds for in the first place. If you're mainly a home based retro player, these really aren't ideal for that and there are MUCH better options of course. If you travel and or want something to play with during your lunch hour these are optimal, and for me the R36S is the best for it, for now. Good review, well laid out and very well explained.
Stock OS on the ARC D I just got has been great so far too, did Anbernic actually hire an OS team? Out of the box Saturn performance on that shocked the absolute hell out of me. There's light bleed in one corner and the game card slot has been a little flaky, but overall happy so far. Now I have the ARC D if I wake up feeling my Sega kid roots, and the 353p if I wake up feeling like a nintendo kid.
I bought the new RG35XX+, but let me give a few personal opinions whether or not it's worth it. I'd recommend anyone that's using original RG35XX to install batocera on it (maybe on a secondary SD card) as the original RG35XX does run PSP, N64, and other titles using batocera. Granted it's not the best experience, and without multiplayer, but if you wanted to play N64, PSP, and other emulators that weren't offered on original RG35XX or GarlicOS, that would be the cheaper alternative.
... or they could go with Koriki OS which is based on it and actually improves on it in many aspects. It also unlocks the hidden GPU, which both GarlicOS and the stock OS can't use and therefore unlock additional power.
Hopefully they do fix the bluetooth audio issues. Being on commute and connecting my Airpods to this device was something I was looking to be able to do.
It has a headphone jack. If your commute is anything like mine used to be, rocking Airpods is going to bring some undue attention. If you buy one of these then get some dollar store wired dirty buds and keep the Airpods safely hidden away in a pocket for use at work. Another benefit of the wired buds is no sound latency.
@@mattdavis9601 I do have wired headphones but have found myself using Airpods all the time which was why I was wanting to use them with these. I also have the pros that have the noise canceling that are much better than I thought they'd be. But that is true about the sound latency and my wired headphones do sound better anyway haha
8:58 Wait how did you do the sharing of Nintendo Switch games to this? I don't think you can use moonlight on the Switch itself for hosting or such....
I spent 55$ shipped on mine on eBay. I’m extremely happy with it but I haven’t got the hdmi feature to work. Maybe my 6$ Amazon cable was no good. Gonna try an adapter instead and see if it works. Pretty bummed mine doesn’t have that functionality but I will see if I can get it going! If not I’m still very happy with it as a handheld. I have batocera running on it with a really nice rom set.
Thank you for all this content Taki. Been watching your videos for a long time, and I'm about to finally get one of these. Just one question : any "buzzing" sound while using headphones on the RG35XX ? I was about to get the RG353V and heard about these sound issues, so I worry a bit about this. I would also love to use some airpods with this, hope it gets fixed soon !
Looking forward to next year when we start seeing more PS2 capable devices. Though the limited space for buttons makes me wonder: has anyone ever tried putting the analog sticks on the back? As I hold my switch lite in a reverse fashion my middle fingers sit right on the analog, which could in theory sort of work.
I used to own quite a few LG phones back in the day. One of their gimmicks, and one I really liked, was putting the power, fingerprint reader, and volume controls on the back. Looking at this RG35XX Plus; had they decided on putting Start, Select, and Menu on the back in a configuration like an old LG phone, that would've freed up enough space on the front for one, or possibly even two sticks, without increasing the device's footprint. Assuming that this unit has enough room inside to repack everything around the addition of a stick(s). The Xperia Play phone had a glorified touchpad instead of a stick. For packaging reasons; something like that might be worth implementing, either on the front or back of this, instead of sticks. Deck users love their touchpads on the front and the Vita had that touchpad on the rear. I skipped the Vita for reasons that made sense at the time. Did anyone or any game ever use it for analog inputs, ever?
Now I'm really considering geting this! Thanks for your thorough review. Btw, what portable screen is that you used to test out the HDMI out...? I'm looking for a portable display just like that size. Thanks!
well...psx driver tutorial was really hell on d-pad, but possible. :D i looked her, cause stock OS cannot show Scummvm icon :( but whew i will wait, thx for the video.
The added performance that would allow the emulation of PS1, some PS2, DC, and N64 but lacks the analog stick to play them is a deal breaker for me. It's for 3 tier like you said but doesn't add the necessary controls, total bummer.
Hello @TakiUdon, since it has OTG support, does it support the external device through the OTG? Quickest example is Audio Dongle (External soundcard) that produce sound. Took some device sample such as SHIO Truthear, Creative Sound Blaster, Jcally dongle dac etc. I also use my RG35XX for listening to music but the sound produce is not strong enough or not supporting my IEM (in-ear monitor earphone) driver.
Now I wish I would have waited another 4 months before buying a retro Handheld for my library, the plus sound so much better than the base version and manages to play the systems im kinda interested in playing on the go.
I've been thinking of a hand held that can play a good amount of retro and maybe some modern. I hear the RG35XX is good, but I've heard the RG35XX plus is better. I don't mind buying a BT controller on the side. The R 36S looks like it has a bad screen image. Meanwhile RG35XX plus looks like it has more quality. I've been wondering of possibly changing the OS in yhe future after some good time with it to ArkOS with the new version of Batocera. When I saw other YT reviewers the N64 was crisp sound similar to the console. Do you think the RG35XX plus would be a good investment as the first handheld? Its not my first time messing with emulators. The first GBA emulator I played on was on Windows 2000 years ago.
Probly should say that the RG35XX has GPU BUT it's unused from the moment you flash an alternative to the stock OS. Closed kernel, no access to GPU. Still, Garlic works beautifully and runs everything up to PS1 with decent performance.
Fun fact: Due to the standard for extension cords, with most of them, you could overdraw power on them and fry them if you really tried without ever tripping a breaker in your house! Since it's not inside the walls and many don't have fuses, you can draw more power than the cord itself is rated for and in some cases depending on materials even cause the cord's coating to combust once it gets hot enough. :3
Can you explain how to play Steam games 9:28 and if they can be played on a big TV screen too? I am a total newbie. Just trying to understand- can i play steam games directly from the device (without the need for a computer pc) and then hook up the rg35xx+ to a big TV screen via hdmi and connect a separate gamepad via Bluetooth to play in my living room? (If i can do this, it would be quiet amazing, can someone confirm?)
Thanks for covering this - great video as always! One thing which would be interesting to me if the buttons feel the same as the original 35XX (except from the slightly changed form) ... as in did they use the same rubber dome as before, because I personal find the to be phenomenal! Could you please verify if they've gone with the same ones or not?
@@TakiUdonThanks! Do the back buttons also have the same nice defined actuation as the 35xx or did they change their rubber along with changing the plastic parts?
I’ve been trying to find out everywhere if Garlic was worth it. I had no idea how new the Plus was when I ordered one, it was recommended to me by a friend, but I’m loving it so far. My only issue is that stock os runs PlayStation games so much better than retroarch right now, which isn’t a problem but I cant or don’t know how to make extra memory cards
Always get your own roms, the roms on the SD card that comes with it are faulty and broken, also the SD card is trash. Get new SD card(s), a SD card reader and make your own libary of roms. Check tutorials.
man, this looks reallya wesome. i have a miyoo mini v3 and im not the most tech savvy. the lack of wifi for updates really hurts me because ive already messed up trying to install a newer version on onion os. the capabilities of this really appeal to me, but i still like the portability of the original mini. ive been thinking about selling it for a while now to upgrade to something like this or plus. I'm still thinking i may just wait it out until the miyoo mini flip finally releases, if i can get my hands on one that is. even if scalpers upcharge it i may be able to sell my mini and all accessories to pick one up. though, i literally just got a pocket flip to dabble in android emulation. not as compact and pocketable but if it causes me to stop playing my miyoo mini altogether then i guess it wouldnt make much sense to get a different device. i do love the sp form factor though

Hi all, I just bought my console and was wondering if it matters how I charge it the first time. Should I fully charge it first before powering up the console or can I play with it a bit 5-10% and then let it charge?
Very good, although is kind of a shame that does not have a joystick, I mean Dreamcast, and N64 original controllers came with the joystick for a reason, but I guess for the price still pretty good, and as you mentioned you can connect a bluetooth controller to it 👌🏻
I'm wondering if we'll see a comeback of Xperia Play-style capacitive analogue sticks on these kinds of devices, since they don't stick out and make it harder to pocket. PSP Go-style analogue sticks that are flush with the face of the device might work well for the form factor too!

Hi Taki, what was the small portable monitor you used in this video? Where can I buy one
Maybe in two years these kind of devices will be able to run everything without problem. Can't wait.
Thank you for this EXCELLENT review and comparison along similar price lines. You've earned a subscriber.
Right after you said "and here I have the quit option" my TH-cam app crashed😂😂
thank you so much for this incredible review, so much detail and effort. thank you so much
Thanks for the effort and money invested for a proper good review. Liked and subscribed.
I bought myself an RG35xx a month ago. Now this comes out? Damn. So I need to upgrade, because my biggest issue with it is I cannot use RetroAchievements, nor my favorite SN30 Pro controller with it, without a dongle.
What is that neat little HDMI screen you have at 11:30 ?
Any plans to review RG35xx H?
Taki great video like always. Happy Holidays!
Same to you
I have the rg35xx. I don't really care about the additional consoles this new one supports, but if they get the Bluetooth to work with headphones/earbuds that might sway me. Also the rounded corners on the dpad would be a welcome change.
i want the bluetooth for 8bitdo controller support
and wifi for retro-donkey-chievemnts
It's BTv4.2, not even BTv5.0 so video playback will have a very noticeable latency, much less game audio output which requires at least BTv5.0 AND your earbuds/headphones having a dedicated "game/low latency" mode to make it a lot less noticeable.
Been thinking of getting my nephew and myself a retro handheld console. I might just order this and get my nephew the miyoo mini or the standard rg35xx
What was that mini monitor you were using when doing hdmi? It looked very nice!
How the heck do these still not charge over standard USB-C? That's a dealbreaker for me.
lol they do thats not what he was talking about they basicly dont suport wirless charging or super fast insta charging but litteraly anything with power coming out of it and a usb port will charge them
Top Video, very informative. Thank you. ✌
The fact that the dev of Garlic OS rushed to launch it for Plus on launch instead of launching for the OG stings even more knowing it doesn't even bring any benefit to the new device in comparison to the stock firmware. I know the dev is doing it for free in their free time but idk, feels like they mixed up priorities
at 19:56 you click on Roms folder but then it opens the Library/Super Nintendo folder?
Great review. The best review I have watched so far ;)
They have a horizontal version in the rg35xx h
Very informative, great video!
Don't think they hired a team. They have the benefit of being able to use fixes/tunings made by CFW for the last 1-2 years.
I like the Garlic OS layout
Koriki ...not so much ....
Maybe the next update...Garlic OS will unlock 'em GPU power
I like the way you says: "before nintendo goes crazy....." 😁
Very detailed and good video sir ❤
Would you prefer this or the RG353V? They are almost the same price here. 😊
same question
Thank you for all this content Taki. Been watching your videos for a long time, and I'm about to finally get one of these.
Just one question : any "buzzing" sound while using headphones on the RG35XX ?
I was about to get the RG353V and heard about these sound issues, so I worry a bit about this.
I would also love to use some airpods with this, hope it gets fixed soon !
No buzzing sounds. Even though I did audio output for this video, I just tested with some AT headphones and there is no noise.
@@TakiUdonNoted ! Thank you for your time 👍
I may have to get this one now... I bought the RG35XX a couple weeks before Christmas
Is this worth buying over the R36s? Price vs performance
How would that work though? Like would you move them in reverse?!
If anything why not move more buttons to the back?
But just one in the middle would be better
Thanks!
Did they fix the false diagonals? Didn't see it tested in the video.
Excited to get mine.
Excellent Review ....You did well...
well...psx driver tutorial was really hell on d-pad, but possible.
Mines on its way Im so excited
What external lcd were you using and is there a link for that?
Cant wait to get mine in the mail. Any update to the problem connecting bluetooth headphones to your device? Thanks.
I have a R36s, and the screen is very good.
Probly should say that the RG35XX has GPU BUT it's unused from the moment you flash an alternative to the stock OS. Closed kernel, no access to GPU. Still, Garlic works beautifully and runs everything up to PS1 with decent performance.
The video is really fascinating to see, looking for things not everyone is talking about. i do have a question: what is a PD charger ? ^^
The Miyoo Mini Plus with Onion Custom OS is the king in this segment hands down! Hard to beat overall!
Yep
I know its not a ton of power going through it, but that clear plastic extension cord you are using is the scariest thing I have ever seen
rubber glove time
Fun fact: Due to the standard for extension cords, with most of them, you could overdraw power on them and fry them if you really tried without ever tripping a breaker in your house!
Rubber feels the same on all of the front buttons.
So does it come with games pre-installed or do I have to do that myself? (I´m not sure I know how to do that).
Always get your own roms, the roms on the SD card that comes with it are faulty and broken, also the SD card is trash. Get new SD card(s), a SD card reader and make your own libary of roms. Check tutorials.
love the vids taki
man, this looks reallya wesome. i have a miyoo mini v3 and im not the most tech savvy. the lack of wifi for updates really hurts me because ive already messed up trying to install a newer version on onion os. the capabilities of this really appeal to me, but i still like the portability of the original mini. ive been thinking about selling it for a while now to upgrade to something like this or plus.
Till this day i did not manage to get wifi running on the Plus. All updates till July 2024 did not bring any changes.
Honestly, glad i didn't pulled the trigger on this. Just get the RG353VS.
How about rg556? Is that good?
The face I made when I saw TOTK in the opening shot of this video 😳😅
Real talk though, I've never owned a retro handheld and heavily considered the Plus, but I found an awesome deal on the original RG35XX for £40 including shipping. That price was too good to turn down.
Don't worry, the RG35XX earned it's recognition. It's a great system!
I a Rg35XX, Miyoo Mini Plus a Miyoo mini v4 (the last one) and i even had a mini v2 v3.
Out of all of them the V2 V3 and the Rg35XX are my favorites.
Hi Taki i fllowed your procedure but not working at all. Impossible to boot ? Do you know why ?
You sir are a great reviewer... subscriptions achievement earned!
Ps love the comparisons videos the market is 2 big and confusing i like knowing which is best then go from there
Thanks for bringing up the charging issue. It's definitely annoying having to work around a USB-A to USB-C charger to charge these handhelds. I don't even care about fast charging, just make them function with modern USB-C chargers. I'll pay the extra 10 cents in production costs...
What would you recommend for a first time person getting into emulator handheld the MM+ or the RG35XX?
Is it possible to cast/stream wirelessly to a TV without using HDMI, just via wifi like AirPlaying? (Haha why would one want to do that? I’m curious)
Hi all, I just bought my console and was wondering if it matters how I charge it the first time. Should I fully charge it first before powering up the console or can I play with it a bit 5-10% and then let it charge?
Very good, although is kind of a shame that does not have a joystick, I mean Dreamcast, and N64 original controllers came with the joystick for a reason, but I guess for the price still pretty good, and as you mentioned you can connect a bluetooth controller to it 👌🏻
PS1 didn't originally, that came quite a few years into its life after the N64 was out.
PS1 original controller didnt come with joysticks
@@13Hyrule and out of all the PS1 library, there is only one game that actually needs a dualshock in order to play. which is Ape Escape
You can use, for those Stick games, an 8bitdo controller.
I'm wondering if we'll see a comeback of Xperia Play-style capacitive analogue sticks on these kinds of devices, since they don't stick out and make it harder to pocket. PSP Go-style analogue sticks that are flush with the face of the device might work well for the form factor too!
Can this handle Star Wars trilogy (sega model 3) or can light guns but used through the system when HDMI’s to a tv
Is this more powerful than the rgxx35 SP?
I got this and only have two issues first
Dbz Goku's legacy Every time I try to enter the world map I get the pop up that says my hardware can't support the game.
Also....
Dino crisis 2 text is stuck in Chinese even when I have it set to English.
Pretty new to emulators so don't know how to fix can someone PLEASE help me
Can't wait for the review of the 35xx Horizontal, I guess it's everything this one is but horizontal 😊
Does it come uploaded with games?
Did you simply create an N64 folder? Or was there already and empty one in there? Thx
my R36s screen is not turning on... Would anyone know why? or what could be the problem. I just bought it a few days ago and now its not turning on. Still shows blue status light and charging light... Please help. Can't find info on this anywhere on reddit or the internet. 😒
What do you think of RG556. Its much more expensive, is it worth it?
