Rumor has it this was dedicated to Stuart Zender for leaving the band hastily and in bad terms. We'll probably never get to know the whole truth, but if that is so, man, this is song is a strong "I don't ever want to see you again" message to end the relationship. No hope of a reunion anytime soon!
Reportedly Stuart did not think Jay was dividing the money fairly. It is ashamed because the two were very good for each other and us. Money disputes have come between many a band member.
Jay was really spiteful in this case. With the remaining members of the band, they re-recorded the whole album so Stuart wouldn't get any royalties, and added this song as a "good riddance" icing on the cake. Basically it says Stuart thought too high of himself, and he might feel superior at the moment, but for sure the band won't welcome him back as the prodigal son once he will have discovered that alone he's peanuts.

They were all very talented (Jay Kay & Toby), but Zender was more talented. He was writing, arranging and producing, and put the signature on the Jamiroquai sound. Thanks for explaining what really happened. I knew he got a bum rap, but I didn’t know it was THAT bad. I wonder what Jay Kay is saying now, now that Zender has just been ranked the world's highest paid musician. He must be green with envy.

Wow I've just read up on the supposed inspiration for this song. Makes it even more haunting and full of suppressed emotion. We try to make out that we''re glad somebody has left and that we're better off without them, but in reality loosing a close friend is almost as painful ( sometimes more) than losing a great love. "The damage that you've done is so grievous"...says it all. I adore this track from the lyrics to the instrumental twist and Jay does look good as a scruffy gentleman ;)
@@adamjona98 history has shown the bassist was not that replaceable because no album after Synkronized compares to the 4 first albums. Funk odyssey is the only one that comes close.
Yeah, it's crazy that this masterpiece was essentially a diss track for the leaving members. Out of respect, I won't mention their names, but it's quite an intentional move that there are no bassists in this period production.

As far as i know stuart was involved in the songwriting of the first 3. Later albums still have great songs but are not so consistenly good.
"replaceable"??? Stuart Zender was an intergral part of the funky soulfulness of the first three albums. That's why the sound "changed" when he left. The sound further transformed when Toby left after the following album. Space Cowboy, Cosmic Girl, Travelling Without Moving, Mr Moon, Manifest Destiny, and many more all have Zender's signature rebellious, eclectic imprint on them. Nick Fyffe was good, Turner is competent, but Stu definitely had that bass magic.
I forgot how much I loved this video/song. Feels more relevant than ever today, the lyrics and visuals are a perfect metaphor for the corrupt elite. I love the way they've dressed them in French Revolution garb - symbolising that their days are numbered...
