  • In this fun-filled lion walk with Bobcat and Gabby, the inevitable happens. We say a sad farewell to one of Kevin’s tyres. Also in this video, we debate the complexities of conservation. Should any type of hunting be allowed when the money it produces helps protect wildlife in general? Matters of conservation are rarely black and white. Let us know your thoughts in the comments! #wildlife #lion #bite

Hi Lion Whisperers ! a real adventure as always with Bobcat and Gabby. They do like to keep me on my toes and yes i can confirm there will be a ...."No, No, No Gabby ! " included. Bobcat always likes to show the Hyenas he is around. Today i cover an interesting topic with wider reaching implications, the UK Government and the recent Law change affecting imports from Trophy Hunting. It is not always straight forward. A real topical update and also some action to enjoy especially from Gabby. Thank you for the support it means so much.

I was just thinking about how Gabby likes to attack tires. Maybe you could get a used tire, roll it around in scents, then toss it at the end of a walk to see if she chases it? Might get her hunting instincts out on something that rolls away from her, instead of your good tires?

I remember seeing a documentary years ago about how pheasant shooting was responsible for the restoration of scrub and woodland areas they like and benefitted other animals. But they are prey animals. I've eaten pheasant myself in the past. Lions, by nature, are predators and to see them hunted for sport just feels unnatural. In general, prey animals tend to have strength in numbers. Look at wildebeest. There is a youtuber who (as he puts it) harvests deer. But in that case he only takes what is needed to feed his family. That in itself won't make predatory animals go extinct. So I am OK with hunting for food and sport hunting where the policy is catch & release. But killing majestic animal like lions isn't a sport.

On the subject of conservation, here in Australia there are times during conservation efforts we will leave patches of blackberries intact. If you're unfamiliar with the plant they're invasive snarls of thorns. Downright unpleasant to be around and deal with. Also the berries taste bad, straight up are the worst tasting berry I've ever had, completely objective fact here with nothing to do with my taste buds. But anyway, the blackberry bush. Nasty thing. But sometimes we leave them, because an established big patch of them does provide cover for animals and it will help to hold together lose soil (which is a big issue for us), and if we take that away then we'd lose those benefits for as long as it took to replace them with other plants.
So I would agree with the position that it is better to have well managed areas that allow for sustainable hunting. You can spout all the well meaning rhetoric you want, but the fact of the matter is that people need money to eat and for nearly anyone that is always going to take priority over the environment. Ever further, banning trophy hunting won't stop it. It's like any sort of prohibition, people will do it anyway, in ways that cost society far more than providing legal channels to do so. So if the choice is maintaining regulated, sustainable hunting grounds that give income to people at the cost of some animals getting hunted, or stripping that away to leave no legal means of hunting and removing the income source without replacing the environmental management, well I'd say that there's an objectively correct choice to make if you value wildlife preservation.

Life is meant to be simple and clear.
The human species lives on complication and prevarication.
Just do the right thing and if complications arise, spend your money and intellect on overcoming those complications.
We've lied to ourselves about (among other things) climate change; pretending it didn't exist and would solve itself until now we pretend that it isn't already too late -- anything to be lazy and do nothing and blissfully do what we like.
At every stage we've gotten better and better about solving intractable problems but the knowledge and capabilities we've gained are always diverted to entertainment and a new way to smoke a cigarette and pretend lung cancer is not a consequence.
Trophy hunting is stupid, wicked and immoral (if I were particularly religious I might say evil).
Make life simple: ban trophy hunting and solve the consequent 'problems'.
Our species has long passed the stage at which we can afford to f'k about and find lazy ways to keep the rich folk happy and everyone else barefoot and ignorant.
Problem is that we'll never understand that; even as we pass from the planet.
Good news is that none of us will be around over the next 2,000 years to suffer through the consequences of prevarication and simple laziness and self indulgence.
Imagine if you could smoke to your hearts content and leave your sons and daughters to die of lung cancer...
95% of us would be chain smokers.

Gabby cracks me up every time I hear the air coming from the tires. It is like she is waiting for the last of the death moan from them. 😂 As far as trophy hunting, on the surface the thought is disgusting to me. I don’t know enough about the subject to speak to the long term outcomes. I do know if I see a pic of someone proudly displaying they have killed a creature for sport, it certainly alerts me to their psychological processes and tells me all I need to know about them. Even if killed for food, taking a picture of yourself and boasting of the kill tells me a lot.

100% agreed. Even if I don't agree with the idea as a whole of burning trophy, hunting for a whole host of reasons, including conservation, as well as psychology of what trophy hunters could turn to, taking a picture of a dead animal that God created is just bat nuts. For me, it doesn't make it in achievement that you can kill an animal that's much stronger and more dangerous than you with a gun. All the ammo needs is what God gave it.

I’ve heard there are tires that are solid, not requiring air. Maybe that could reduce the need to constantly replace tires?
That said, giving Gabby tires regularly would be fun to watch- both tires ready to be recycled and inflated tires still on wheels, albeit wheels not on a vehicle. Although part of the fun might be upsetting Kevin, so it might not work.

He can look back on his extraordinary life and know that he has helped people see the importance of conservation with honor and respect for the animals in his care. Thank you for bringing to us an education, and a respect for these magnificent creatures. I can't even conceive of harming an animal for sport, but I know that it's a complex issue. I just hope it works out for the best. I SO MUCH enjoy living vicariously through Kevin, [although, I know it's not all walkies with the lions - there's a lot of hard work]. Serious thought. I agree that the wilds need to be left to the wilds. It is such a fragile balance to the ecosystem that takes decades to bring back. I’m from northern Montana and can attest to the years of clearing forest and plains, and how it damaged so many animals. We are not as fragile as the African savannah, so it horrifies me to think about them banning the hunts (yay!) only to clear for farms. Ecosystem vs.economics. Bleh. 😢

Gabby must get such satisfaction hearing the air hiss out of a punctured tire. It's like strangling a prey... But for this discussion; wildlife lands can continue with more encouraged tourism. Hotels can be built on the outskirts of those areas. High above the ground monorails can traverse these parks. There are ways for investing in and creating infrastructures saving wildlife and the environment while employing local people.

I just love watching them - it is very easy to forget the strength and power of these animals when they are enjoying a walk with you, especially that mischievous Gabby, who knew exactly what she was doing. In fact, you could see her planning her little game. She must enjoy the noisy escape of air when those teeth clamp down on rubber - the lion's jaw must be extraordinarily strong - you said it was an enrichment walk, Kevin. Gabby was adding the enrichment icing - LOL.

I loved that you spoke about the importance and complexities of conservation. It's easy for people, including myself, who aren't fully aware of the situation, to just want to protect all animals. Though after listening to people who live close to the land and the animals, I understand it's not that easy. I hope your wisdom reaches far and wide, that legislators do their homework, and ultimately do what's best for the areas that need protection

I agree. I don’t like trophy hunting at all. Lions kill each other in the wild and I don’t feel there is a need for trophy hunting. It’s a sensitive issue and I know everyone won’t agree with me. Going into the habitat of an animal just to kill it is a huge problem for me. Especially when the male lion killed has a pride and cubs now under even bigger threat with him not around. The death of one can lead to the death of more. There are some parks who do contraception for a period of time to keep the area from overcrowding. So, there are other ways.

    • @Robsreviewsanddemos
      @Robsreviewsanddemos ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Pawsandtales321 It's not about overpopulation, it's about having the capital for the protection, conservation and management of these areas. I'm not a hunter but I understand that without the hunters paying to hunt in these areas, animals like the White Rhino and Snow leopard would be gone from the face of the earth. Legal managed hunting pays for all that. Same in the United states, hunting permits pay for the management and conservation of the environment. Fishing permits pay for the same.

    • @kellykat8057
      @kellykat8057 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@RobsreviewsanddemosAccording to the International Rhino Foundation, "only populations of the southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum) remain viable. The northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is extinct in the wild due to poaching, and only two females remain at a sanctuary in East Africa."
This is only one species. Snow leopards are also critically endangered and on the brink of extinction.
American bison were all but wiped out in America because people on their way west just wanted carnival-like shooting gallery entertainment & trophies of these populous beasts. Populations are up in protected areas due to federal conservation efforts, yes; but there were millions of these animals in the 1800's.
Wolves are being hunted to near extinction again in the American plains and western states with the blessings of state governments. They too state that this is in the name of conservation, but really it isn't. It's tourism dollars. If it was in the name of conservation, we would not be worried about their plummeting numbers.
Humans are unfortunately a bloodthirsty & greedy bunch. Even with the most humanitarian & best managed conservation programs, there will always be bad actors who try to get more money for themselves; and, the worst of them all, the poachers & guides who are completely circumventing the system.
It's this bloodlust & greed that makes me think that we need to end trophy hunts, and canned trophy hunts and any other harvesting of endangered animals, because humans don't know when to quit. We will always push everything to the limits including eventually ourselves.
Why can't we only have tourism that involves cameras instead of guns? Or, if someone has a need to shoot something, pay tourism dollars to assist skilled vets, biologists, & conservation groups to shoot tranquilizer darts when these professionals are out working in the field? Maybe this would allow hunters to learn how special & vital these species are in their ecosystem. Hopefully they would never again want to kill these wonderful animals.
Or, (and here come the angry replies), if the bloodthirsty among us have an absolute need to hunt something, then maybe it's time to let them help conservation efforts by using that testosterone to apprehend or shoot the poachers.
I just can't trust humans to do the right thing regarding conservation, when trophy hunting continues to be allowed. Even as numbers of species shrinks, both the "legal" hunting & poaching continues. I really think we must outlaw managed trophy hunts to at least cut down on those killings; and, find other creative ways to help indigenous people by monetizing anti-poaching activities.

I do feel they should be punished big time, though. I agree there has to be other ways besides hunting. You said it all so well… better than I ever could. I let my emotions get in the way sometimes and I’m trying not to do that.

That's right, Gabby - kill that tyre! 😅🦁Bobcat and the "bloody hyenas" plus naauugghty Gabby - what a Friday treat. Thanks for talking about the topic of trophy hunting. It has always disgusted me beyond anything - so granted, at first I was really happy when you introduced the law. But, as you explained, the topic is far more complex. What I find disdainful is that people (and I would include myself probably) who are not informed and who are far removed from the situation may make decisions that are disrespectful of the finer issues and the communities involved. Still, I do think it would be a growing necessity for African governments to find ways of maintaining these areas without trophy hunting. (I say that with zero experience in conservation, though). However, as people here are saying, I truly do not believe we will ever stop people from wanting to trophy hunt ... So, yes - massive conundrum. I think, in the long run we must do everything we can to preserve habitat and these beautiful animals!

Love Gabby ... When it comes to trophy hunting in the US, many States have lots drawn for hunting licenses for certain animals. Hunters put their name into the drawing pile and may get their name drawn. In other States, it is always open season like in Texas where wild boar are considered an invasive species and sometimes deer are too
