The plain wood with black paint was my favorite. After the satin finish was applied it looked great. All four sides were fun though. Thanks for the great tips!
Perfect timing Shane, exactly what I needed for my next build which will incorporate some shiplap that I want white but aged. So I think I'll go with the love taps, black fill, white paint and sandback :D
Just did this to a nightstand I had. Sanded it to bare wood,stained it and then quickly brushed on chalk paint.. Finished it with a coat of polycrylic (since i had it laying around) and as you say she's a rippa !! Added some nice black knobs on it and it is a huge 180 from what it looked like. It was for the girlfriend's makeup crap and i have to setup her vanity after we finished redoing our room. Gotta keep my baby's mom happy.

Love the results on that mate with the steel wool you’ve made an ebonising fluid. I have a jar in the workshop I made months ago it reacts with the tannins in the wood so something like oak changes colour before your eyes. Another good thing to try is making chalk paint with a bit of emulation and a good helping of talc it gives a great effect. 👌🏻

Been doing it wrong all this time. I've been sitting my timber on the couch for 8 hours with beers and getting my wife and kids to yell at it and it wasn't getting distressed at all!
Great tips Shane, I just finished painting a blanket box with chalk paint and then sanded through to the pine below. Next time I will try that ageing method with the nails and vinegar. Loved the Benny Hill drive down the lane...😊

There I was, up all night trying to teach myself how to make a box using only simple hand tools. Then I come inside and see this video. Distressed. Yeah, that’s what I was going for! The distressed and reclaimed look. And the “I own stock in a wood glue company” look! Excellent video as always, sir!
Ahh! Another advantage of using pallet wood! (besides it being free). It already comes distressed! In fact, some of the pallet wood I get is so distressed it need therapy! 😉
Another great way to age it fast. If you happen to own cattle lay the wood out where you feed they will wear the edges down and distress it very nicely.

Other tools of choice would be files and rasps for adding wear and tear (abrasion) marks-best used on edges and corners. Of the paint treatments, the black by itself was the best.
i like smooth looking new type furniture but the way you do it is good also like i would put it in a cabin or by a lake, not in a lake..hahaha...by a lake something like that would look good great there, outdoors type.

I’ve used charcoal from the wood stove before. I think it works better on hardwood though. They all came out great. I never heard of using vinegar, steel wool and nails before. Gonna have to try that out.
Hey Brian, forgot what the chemical reaction is, but basically it reacts with the tannin in the wood. The higher the tannin content, the more severe the reaction

I might try the vinegar idea too, but how long does the smell last? I've got a jar of pickled beetroot so that should add some interesting colour to the mix!

I actually feel a bit more confident now. PiDGE IAM use a durable varnish to seal it but don't do thick coats. It may be worth using a clear wax polish over the varnish in my opinion. This can be applied using a cloth or brush and buffed when the polish has dried a bit. You can experiment with stained polishes too.
DIYForKnuckleheads those Titelist Pro V1’s don’t come cheap but I’m sure you could use some of the 352 dimples on it to enhance that distressed timber look! 👍

Wire brush works well too.
Hand held for finer control and if you want to really gnaw at it, use one that mounts in your drill.
I use a wire brush on my drill to make softwood look weathered.

I've got a tip for you, when you hit your fingernails, put them in vinegar immediately, it will stop them going black and help with the pain.

Gday Pidge....Yeah that varnish would do the trick. Polyuretane also works very well. Just make sure it's 110% dry and hard before you use it. 👍👍😁🇦🇺
