  • Distressing wood is a great way to make new wood furniture look like antique furniture.
    There are many different "styles" of furniture including the Antique Look. In this video I show some of the techniques to make wood look old and distressed.

    Smart using the chain with the vice. I never would have thought of that.

    Very interesting comparing the three different finishing products Colin. I agree the shellac and dye does stand out to highlight the distressing part of the wood. Who would have thought that abused mark up wood furniture would one day be in fashion but it is. Thanks for posting.

      yeah ... one day we are sanding like crazy to make it smooth and nice, the next we are hammering the wood with chains to making rough

    A great topic Colin. I have not really thrown my own hat in the ring and made distressed pieces except for a few small items. I would guess it's appeal to me has been over done over the years but I have seen some awesome small items and large furniture pieces that were expertly finished and really struck the right cord in me. It was really good to see the three panels compared to one another and how the stressed areas showed through. This was a great idea Colin.

    You can skip a lot of this just by buying your lumber at Home Depot--it comes pre-dinged up.

    Great video again. There are several companies out there that are calling their products stain, they are actually dyes. It threw me for a loop when I went to stir them expecting the dirt / clay to come up from the bottom and it didn't. At first I thought I bought the wrong product and when I checked the label it did say stain on it.

      @knecht105  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree with you and some out there have changed their names of products they once sold as dyes and now selling as stains ... it's very confusing for people a bit newer ... good for you for checking things out, glad you posted this ... thanks Thomas

    @woodworkweb could I put boiled linseed as a finish and the polyurethane it? what would you recommend?

  • @tylerfoster7481

    I recommend a dark walnut stain on pine. Some areas will really soak in - and be very dark, while other areas will be much lighter. This technique makes using ebony dye and/or burns unnecessary. I also recommend using a file on the edges in a few areas.

      I liked it best too but I think I mixed it a bit thin, going to try a thicker version might even look better

    That was fun. I'm making a distressed farmhouse table. They said they wanted it heavy distressed. I've torched, taken chains to it, saw tooth scratches and hammers ha.

    Old furniture often has tiny bug holes. I have a block of wood with nails protruding and make small holes, especially near glue joints where they eat the hide glue.

    Good job,, think the dye you are using its a lil too much for my liking.. i’ve recently did a feature wall 5x6m i did exactly what you did by beating up the boards, i also used wooden pallets boards with same thickness wider ones I bought from building suppliers, and also what i had from the yard, as i said instead of black dye? i went for dark and light wood stain on some others used old recycled engine oil out of my Van I serviced not long ago, then went light with planner on boards to remove the shine here n there from wood stain.. wish i cld load a picture here so you can see.. wall looks absolutely stunning.. and not overly done..
