  • Beatrice Berrut plays the 3rd and 4th mvts of Chopin Piano Sonata no.2 in b-flat minor op.35. Live recorded in Milano on a new Bösendorfer concert grand.
    Chopin completed the work while living in George Sand's manor in Nohant, some 250 km (160 mi) south of Paris, a year before it was published in 1840. The third movement of the Piano Sonata No. 2 is Chopin's famous funeral march (French: Marche funèbre) which was composed at least two years before the remainder of the work and has remained, by itself, one of Chopin’s most popular compositions. The Piano Sonata No. 2 carries allusions and reminiscences of music by Bach and by Beethoven; Beethoven's twelfth piano sonata also has a funeral march as its third movement.
    00:00 Marche
    08:08 Finale: Presto

    Your playing of the Marche is utterly ravishing; far from it being a funeral march, your performance would make the dead wake up so they could listen. And it makes me happy to be alive to hear such beauty. You playing the sublime passage starting at 2:40, and lasting more than two minutes, to me evokes everything good and peaceful and gentle and happy. You playing is indeed der klang, der berührt. Such a joy. Thank you.

      Thank you for your nice comment! There is a bright light even in the darkness of the Marche indeed (to which Chopin didn't add the attribute "funèbre", but his editor did). A good lesson to learn in times of pandemic...;) Best wishes, Beatrice

    OMG! I love what you did with the last movement! It connects so well with the Marche... An hour ago, I started listening to your Liszt Sonate on FB. But I couldn’t stop listening. Then, I had to cyber stalk you, and found this. Lol. Lovely playing of my two favorite sonatas.

    its hard not to notice that sweet smile at the end, and after such a composition... plz dont blame us for noticing, your joy is part of your being and music...for those of use suffering with life a smile even on a video lifts us up...and its nice on top of the wonderfully warm way you interpret music. i love this version...its your own. its how i would play it if could... its so amazing how 5 virtuosi, playing the same piano even, give such a different tone even...let alone interpretation.....with violin or saxaphone, of course its clear how this works, but the piano, you are further away from the mechanism that produces sound, and yet.....bravo Ms. Berrut, and thank you...i love this sonata, have 5 great recordings, Rudolph Serkin is one that comes to mind... This is as good and adds another dimension...

    C'est une grande interprète qui en train de se classer aux côtés des plus grandes - toucher pianistique d'une extrême finesse, infinie sensibilité et rendu de l'oeuvre où elle se glisse dans l'âme du compositeur pour le servir avec une merveilleuse humilité.
    Je suis toute admiration.

    Quite a remarkable balance of intelligence, control and musical expression. Leaves a lasting impression of a musician who's ambition is deliver the Composer's intentions, agree? Also really enjoyed Beatrice's rendition of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne - check it out!

      @BeatriceBerrut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, it is very evocative music and the flair of wind and rain is definitely around : Chopin said the last movement was to be played like wind on tombs. One cannot imagine a better musical depiction of that...

    Hi Beatrice...i really like this...i just realized after a second listening that your final movement seems less Presto than i am used to....and as a result you give it an interesting feel that makes it seem more related to than a contrast to the 3rd...makes me want to look at the score,.....better is that i think in your tempo you succeed in bringing out phrases and emotions that i now have the time to digest. earlier great versions i know, it races by in a violent flash..Richter comes to mind. .i like both, but i really like this one b/c i am listening to your Schuman and Liszt and this reminds me of the L....by the way i really hear the youthfulness in the Schumann as you play it....#ForzaMundo! I hope someday you record Schuberts last sonatas and also LVB sonatas for cello and piano, the quintet, a bunch of trios.....Kabalevsky was my favorite in my piano lessons as a little kid...after practice i would do free improv on the piano, kabalevskyesque....it was then that my mom would call out from the kitchen (yup!..1963) "that was nice, eyton, what was that piece." ...

    • @BeatriceBerrut
      @BeatriceBerrut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Eyton, you are right, I tried to figure out voicing and phrasing, as I feel that this movement is totally connected to the Marche Funèbre. Chopin said it should sound like wind on a cemetery...

    • @eytonshalom

      @@BeatriceBerrut thanks for responding. ...appreciate it.....that's great to have confirmed what i think i am hearing in your piano..... Wind, exactly! and wind starts, stops, and starts again.....you succeed! and on that on the Schumann CD (i may have already commented).... i never heard the "jeunne homme" in Schumann so clearly before....theres a moment in one of them where i suddenly feel as if on a carousel in one of those lovely carnivals you have in summer in europe!..............its really helping me with my little compositions to focus on phrases, voices, architechture, as opposed to just developing melodies as i go.....to step back......my teacher, a trombonist! studied with a man at Northwestern in Chicago, un Italiano, whose written on "sentences" as a structure...and we read his stuff while we work on a WAM and a LVB sonata...thanks again...

    I was listening to the International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments recently, and, in the second round, pianists seemed to have a choice between playing this sonata, op 35, and op 58. My favorite performers chose op 58, but I could not find you performing that sonata on TH-cam. Have you ever recorded the op 58, if so, where could I find it? If not, will you ever? You did op 35 so very well, and this sonata is so beautiful; I would love to hear an interpretation by you. ♥
