  • My opinion on starting on a 600cc, or in this case, an R6. Spoiler: you'll be fine. Hope you enjoy.
    My bike is a Yamaha 2008 R6 and I'm using the GoPro Hero 5.

    You can start on any bike. 600cc bikes aren't death machines, ALL bikes can be death machines. It just takes responsibility to ride any bike, especially a 600 and up.

      Teh StyLz So someone brand new would start on a cbr1000? yea, no. Anyone can start on any bike yes, but just like in life nobody starts at the top and you work your way up, same applies to sports bikes in my opinion. Because with each cc class is a new set of responsibilities financially being number one.

      All about throttle control. I started on a 75 kz900. After that had a kz1000. Not a lot of top end on those but they are torque monsters. Had straight drag bars on both of them. Had a katana 600 and now a cbr600rr. Been riding for years now and still ride a 600. Love my 600.

      @@Demiurge66 Well, started riding on my first FZR 1000 from 89'.
      2 months later bought my first R1 RN12 from 04'
      One year later in 2018 changed to 15' S1000RR.
      Guess what? Got an appointment with my local dealership tomorrow. Interested in a beautiful red Panigale V4.
      Riding for 3 Years now, not a single drop, crash or similar accident. Few times on race track, still no fall.

      I'm 39, got my license OCT2020 and my first bike is a Honda CBR600RR, with 0 experience prior to Harley MSF... I've ridden a mountain bike when I was a teenager and that's it...
      This vid is pretty accurate to what I went through. If you "Respect" the throttle it is fine...
      When I first got on the bike, I was pretty scared to do the speed limit 40mph lol... took me a few days and I was okay with it... I basically made sectioned off RPMs to train in until I felt comfortable to get to the next section of RPM, kind of like what this guy said.... it took me several weeks to a couple months to be able to redline it.

    • @HomeDefender30
      @HomeDefender30 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phreak074 your underestimating the value of the MSF course you took. Learning proper safety and techniques go a long way, it’s the people with no training and no experience that jump on 600’s and hurt themselves.
      Seriously I forget the exact statistic, so I won’t make anything up here, but riders who have taken an MSF course are magnitudes less likely to be involved in crashes than those who have not.

    Started on a 250 and 1500 miles later got an r6. I would have been in the hospital for sure if I started on my r6. I made a lot of mistakes learning how to ride which would definitely loop my r6 right on top of me. It feels considerably heavier too and less flickable. New riders have a hard time with low speed maneuvers and that’s why I wouldn’t recommend a 600 to any new rider.

    • @MrMilk-ug6gl
      @MrMilk-ug6gl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I came here to say this. I started on a ninja 250 and I made some small mistakes on that 250 that may have seriously hurt me if I was on a 600. I now have a Honda CBR 600RR and love it immensely, but you can't put a value starting with something smaller so you can make those mistakes.....a 600 is a lot of bike.....in comparison to some others it's not, but let's not be stupid and pretend like a 600 isn't a ridiculous amount of power. The 600 will be there later, don't hurt yourself! By this same logic in the video you can start on a liter bike..."be careful and dont be stupid" is entirely subjective and having that extra power just gives greater opportunity to make mistakes.

    Great explanation on RPM, agree completely. Love the R6. i started on a HEAVY 95 Suzuki 600, in my experience "dangers" for beginners include: "monkey" throttle on starts. Passing irresponsibly in traffic (fast and without warning to other drivers) and turning at high speeds (anything above recommended speed limit). And I might add that "Intimidation" (being scared) will cloud the mind (common sense) for new riders. (Most) people know what the right thing to do to handle situations are but the "first time experience" clouds judgment. I would say to combat the "first time experience" would be multiple short rides in low traffic or no traffic would be the answer.

    You can, but you shouldn't. Remember first learning how to drive a car for the first time? Pretty unsettling right? Now imagine learning how to drive in a super car vs a little honda civic. Makes it all a much better experience in the civic doesn't it?
    You can all do what you want but theres a reason why professionals and many experienced motorcyclists do not recommend a super sport as your first bike. The impatience of many young or newer riders to get into motorcycling on the bike they want to ride vs the bike they should be riding will forever be a problem. You make up a large percentage of the "death machine" statistics after you go down and wreck your shit. I know my words will be read and ignored, so fuck it.

      Well.. if you just don't be a douche bag and get rid of the ego, then starting on a 600 isn't going to be much different.
      If I start on a 125cc, got used to it. Then realize I'd like to go higher, not only have you just wasted money on the 125cc, you're going to be comfortable with that bike, then say I decide to upgrade. Now I'm going to have to spend even more time getting used to a different bike. While if I had just started on a 600cc in the beginning, you'll have A. Saved probably at least £5000 B. You'll have gotten used to the 600cc in the first place, if you only start on a 600cc to start with you're not going to know any different. The only difference between a 600cc and a 125cc, is probably a bit heavier, slightly more difficult to control. All issues can be avoided regardless of what cc you start on or even just bike in general you start on.. it wont matter as long as you're not an idiot.

      Recently i’ve built a newfound passion for motorcycles and want to get my own bike to start riding. TH-cam has been recommending me a handful of these “Starting on 600cc Bike. Worth it or not?” and well, even though i personally feel very comfortable on my friends dirt bike, that’s maybe around 150cc’s, to the point where i can literally full throttle it and reach the max speed on dirt roads... I’m still leaning and 99% likely as of right now to go out and buy myself a ninja 300 only because I know myself and i’m a sucker for speed. To avoid the temptation of the power of a super sport bike, i’ll buy a 300 first and then sell it and buy a 600. From the prices i’ve been seeing online for used bikes i’ll only lose $1-2k for the upgrade. and that’s only as far as the investment goes. i think that amount of money is worth the learning experience. not sure why i said all of this, maybe so that somebody else in my position will read it and have a better understanding. in the end, i’m not scared to die. i’m just scared of living the rest of my life handicapped.

    People exaggerate the type of bike one should start on DRASTICALLY.
    I started on a 250. I've ridden all the major 600cc super bikes except the GSXR (R6, CBR, Daytona, ZX6R).
    The only issue I see others having are the basics such as handling the throttle and shifting, balance, body position when turning, braking properly etc. These all can be learned on almost any bike, but I will say 250s are almost fool proof due to how slow they and how light they are.

    It's important to have some experience with sliding on a dirt road, so you won't freak out and crash if you slide over a slippery spot in a fast turn. But a typical 600 is too expensive to take off road, so you're missing something in the learning process.

    The 600 is a death machine in regards to getting on one without any motorbike experience.
    Its a lot faster than a 650 and a moped as you mentioned its not that faster!! It bloody well is, the 600 is a race bike for street and track.
    Drove 125 250 and 500 for yesrs
    Jumped on my CBR RR 600 and it was a different world
    The only benefits of a smaller bike is the controls familiarity.
    The R6 is probably the worst starter bike.
    Im going to tell you what you have zero idea about
    Riding a sports bike at low revs will destroy your engine internal parts.
    There specifically built to be in the high rev range there not for cruising around at 40 mph saying look at me i have a sports bike
    With your info your putting out you should tell the viewers to start on an R1 fuk the 600 there both the same if you ride slow!! Right??

    I started on a 2015 zx6r. Not hard by any means. Educate educate educate yourself. Watch twist of the wrist cornering bible, experiment and LEARN. I was pulling 45 degree lean angles on the second week of ownership just by implementing skills preached by experienced riders. Granted I felt very comfortable on a bike before I got it and knew the physics behind bike handling. Simply knowing the skills will bring you a long way. And use common sense, you have a 130hp bike that weighs 400lbs. Bitch will fucking move with the twist of the wrist, use good judgement and never get over confident and you'll do just fine.

    I realize people who are more serious about long term riding and really learning HOW to ride, do not start on a 600+ . Ive been on anything from ninja 300s through cbr1000's. I thought i was a killer on the streets, after 15k miles in one year on a gsxr750, so why not go to a 1000? After going to a 1000 and doing a few track days you QUICKLY realize that street riding does not prepare or teach you 1/4th of what you need to be a talented rider.
    Tell a young person to keep the power low, and it wont happen. You will push your limits, you wont know how to properly handle yourself under high speeds, and you will be fucked. Not to mention R6's are incredibly prone to tank slappers and dont come with steering dampers. As gutless as the bike is in lower rpm's that can also make it unpredictable for a new rider under "oh shit" moments. You need to get out of the way but dont know how to handle yourself? Cool youll speed out of the way of problem #1, but then you hit that 8K+ rpm on accident and not know how to deal with the rear end of the stopping car infront of you on time.
    Can you ride one as a starter? Sure. Just depends on if you want stunted progression and understanding if you plan on really riding sportsbikes. It will take you far longer to learn on a bike that is too big for you BECAUSE you are intentionally limiting yourself "oh no i cant go past 5k unless it gets scary" is something you shouldnt need to worry about by the time an R6 is in your garage. I bought an R6 AFTER buying a 1000. My bikes = starter was a 650(perfect, taught me so much didnt get bored), then upgraded to a gsxr750(broke all my ribs in the first week, kept it for 20k miles after it), then a 2017 cbr1000rr sp2. And after owning the 1000 and doing some track days I realize I should have kept the 650/750 for WAY longer and realize NOW a 600 is a good bike to learn with. After well over 15k+ miles per bike, is when i bought an R6.

    And everyone talks about throttle control which is important…. But what about clutch, rear brake and throttle control all at the same time for low speed maneuvers? That’s REAL skill. Not twisting a throttle and shifting gears.
    Unless you know how to ride a friction zone you have no business being on a 600cc TRACK bike, like an r6

  • @bearymos4805
    @bearymos4805 ปีที่แล้ว

    ok yeah, but you wouldn't give a hellcat or lambo to a new driver would you? you have to remember a lot of people who ask this drive autos and have no bike experience. (by "new rider, I assume it refers to ACTUAL new riders, people who haven't ever touched bikes). They don't know how to work a clutch, or fully know how to respect a powerful machine or speed. do you have bike experience? rode dirt bikes through life? sure, then you know how to judge a bike and you can make that educated decision. but new riders who haven't ridden before? like I said, it's a 16 year old in a hellcat problem, you shouldn't recommend it to them. I would rather they have a 300 for a few months and sell it then get a 600.

    Well you know, not a lot of 20 year olds are sensible :)...
    That's why most people, just to be on the safe side, they say....go for a 50cc bike frist :D

  • @Prolific_Troll
    @Prolific_Troll 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Short answer - no. Why? not only is a smaller cc bike much safer for a beginner, it also requires a beginner to learn more of the nuances, such as getting more comfortable with shifting in various situations, etc etc etc A 300 will require you to shift 10x as often as a 600, which requires more braking, more finger work, more alertness to surroundings, broader awareness, etc etc etc.
    Never trust someone who has only one bike's worth of experience to give you advice on which bike to begin with, they simply have no beacon of measurement. EVERYONE will drop a bike in their lifetime, remember that.

    You can ride it like a 300, but how many 18 and 19 year olds are going to be disciplined enough to ride it like that? I don’t agree that you should start on a 600. If you accidentally give it too much gas as you’re letting out the clutch when you’re first learning, you’re gonna go flying 😂 just pick up an old 250 or a 300 for like 1500-2000 dollars and learn on it for a season, and then go pick up a 600. Ya, maybe you’d be fine on an r6, but maybe you won’t. You’re gambling with your life.

    Starting on a 600cc motorcycle is stupid especially for your first bike, people don't understand what the difference is starting on a 250cc or 600cc. A 250cc motorcycle is a perfect bike to learn how to ride, if you start on a 250cc bike you will gain more skills and have control of the bike and most importantly keep your focus in traffic HOWEVER if you start on a 600cc your going to have a hard time riding, your going to concentrate more on controlling the bike rather then the cars around you.
    Many people have accidents because of this, riding a motorcycle is not a joke, you could die

  • @MacLomax
    @MacLomax 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can but you shouldn't. If go SV650. You get the weight of a big bike plus forgiveness to help you learn how to control a bike. Not to mention forgiving brakes. I say learn how to control the bike, learn traffic, riding in the wind, low speed maneuvers, parking lots. After a year sell it and get a 600.

    A good rider can make a r1 dangerous and a bad rider can make a r3 dangerous. As long as you respect the bike and don’t ride faster than your guardian angel and you took the time to actually beaten you back. EI ( riding neighborhoods before highway. Learning 1,2,3 gear before boosting to 6th. You’ll be fine on a 600.

    It's all just knowing your limits and respecting the bike's power, no you shouldn't start on an r1 or a honda fireblade, but anyone with common sense would know that, but I've seen people start on gsxr 600s and 750s, I've seen people start on a cbr600rr, and the ones that turned out successful took care of themselves, wore gear, and respected the bike

    600 cc doesn’t really mean much when you say it. A 600 street bike can go 200 mph, a 600 super motor is a different story. A 600 naked bike is in between. Bottom like is if you start on a street bike it’s sketchy. Not saying you shouldn’t or can’t. It’s sketchy, no debate.

    You have owned one bike in youre entire life (and let's be real here the only reason you bought it is because of the way it looks) you have very little riding experience and you're tryna tell noobs to start on a 600.. you can't ride that bike like you think you can bro, try an fz07. Much more comfortable basically a better bike in every single way for a rider like you riding around town or anybody trying to start on something that's not dogshit slow. I've owned 2 Yamaha r6s trust me I know the appeal but when it comes to actually enjoying a motorcycle you may convince yourself that you love the r6 but I guarantee if you go ride other bikes you will change your opinion. If you aren't a track rider you're a poser if you own and ride one of these bikes around town. You can start on a 600 but you're going to learn slow ASF and there is very little room for error. Anything is possible but there are much easier and more practical ways to learn and buying a 600 is not easy, practical, or fun to be honest. Maybe for the first year or so daily riding it but you will soon realize the downfalls of the R6 how unbelievably uncomfortable and hot it is in traffic. Get a wr250, Fz07 guarantee you'll be much better off.

    it's kind of foolish to say "the bike won't kill you, your choices will"
    the whole point of being a fucking noob is you don't make good choices, the whole point of being a noob is you don't know that what you're doing is dangerous. when you are a noob riding around on a bike you don't have the experience to know the consequences of your actions and you don't have the ability to know "ok it's safe to wind it out here".
    its like handing a child a loaded gun, they aren't aware and they will probably go one of two ways; either fear it or have no respect for it.
    R6 power spike will scare the shit out of a noob rider mid corner if they lack experience. Just because someone bought a 300-400 to learn on and they're bored of it after a year does not mean it was the wrong choice, it means you've grown as a rider.
