    I spent a week in California in 2019 and must have ate at in-n-out at least 5 times

    Enjoyed. Thanks. A nice reminder of a number of stays in the bay are near SFO (at an embarrassing suits, as my son put it) and watching the inbounds from the waterside walkway.

    All I'm going to say is that you're a braver man than I to have a "double-double" burger before a 16 hour flight 😂. Sadly, I have not yet made it along to In-N-Out burger at LAX - hoping to fit a visit in next time I've over, and get in some plane spotting, so I found this video really useful (thanks!). While i'm not a runway expert by any measure, I believe the runway numbering convention is purely to provide a distinction between the different runways. Yes, the initial 1 or 2 runways will be numbered based on the compass bearing, rounded to the nearest 10 degrees, with a single runway just having the number (runway 23); 2 runways on the same alignment having a Left or Right; and 3 runways having Left, Right and Centre (23L, 23C, 23R). More than 3 runways on the same alignment, they will increase or decrease the runway number by 1, so if the runway is on a 230 degree heading, you will end up with 23L, 23R, 24L and 24R, but the actual compass bearing isn't 10 degrees different.

      Cheers! I had a couple of hours to digest the burger before the truffle onslaught began!!!

    did that last year and it was great watching the planes land with a burger and fries. i have the same problem with Whataburger and In-N-Out, but i think they just a little better than In-N-Out

    That was a great place for plane spotting Matt plus being able to get your burger to eat while watching added to the location. Matt hope you are keeping up with your exercise after all the calories you're eating while flying and cruising plus your double burger 🤔🤔🤔🤔
    Great video as usual Matt

    Yes so all four runways are exactly parallel and on heading 251 degrees. When you have two parallel one is Left and one is Right. When you have three parallel you would have a Centre as well. When you have four parallel like at LAX you do one pair as 25L/R and the other pair as one number off so 24L/R. As you suggested, it helps avoid any confusion.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers Alexis. I knew someone would know! They looked parallel on Google Maps but I resisted the urge to get my compass out! Thanks for the comment and the knowledge.

    Good video Matt! My first trip to SOCAL was a BA TP ticket at the start of 2020 which I extended to San Diego from LAX. Of course I had to include the In-N-Out Burger! A couple of great hours eating and spotting!!

      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter - ending in San Diego - wise man. Beautiful city and quite a fun approach to the airport too! I'm sure there must be an equivalent burger shop outside SAN too given the flight path... Might be worth an explore next time I'm there!

    haha good vid Matt, not sure you mentioned. you can get the bus there , very easy. Also need to get your fries 'Animal style' too ! makes them much better. I liked Fudruckers burgers in Texas too, maybe not around these days...

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Charlie - that's a couple of votes for fries animal style - well worth a try next time I'm there! Been to Fudruckers a couple of times - I always thought it was trying to be a step up from a typical counter service burger chain and I quite liked it... Thinking this may become a series on the channel!

    Nice one Matt. What I would say is you seem to get a lot more fries with your burger than the average McDonald’s or Burger King. I had heard of this place before so when I do eventually get to LAX I’ll be sure to check it out. In the meantime, I do watch quite a lot of LAFlights which is an excellent live streaming show I definitely recommend.

    Hi Matt would like to know if you had a scanner for listening into the tower calls? Or is there now a decent app that covers these airports? cheers

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't use one and don't know.... Although I do recall Noel Philips talking about it in an old (old!) video... He used to make full flight videos and overdubbed the ATC traffic from the flight. He made a video about how he did it, in which he talked about how he found the ATC chatter... Might be tricky to find but that may be something to dig out?

      @@MattsPlanet Thanks Matt I recall years ago spending a day stuck at Heathrow so spent the day on a rooftop with some plane spotters with scanners. Good fun and quite impressive with 5 or 6 jets rolling in non stop with Tower banter going on.

    Nice one Matt! I always love visiting this location every time I visit SoCal. Quick tip : if you want to spot aircraft on the opposite runway (like you mentioned regarding the cargo 747s), head up to Clutters Park which is on the south side of the airfield with a view of the entire southern runways from end to end plus views overlooking Terminal 8 right over to TBIT terminal

    Great video - I've been to that In and Out several times. (I do have to correct the pronunciation though - it's pronounced Se PULL va DUH.)
    I also agree on the fries, but still eat them up. Anyone who goes to In and Out also try the Chocolate Milk Shake, it's the best milkshake in world too!

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers David. I actually googled how to pronounce Sepulveda and went with what google recommended... I did think about calling it Sepultura Boulevard to see if anyone noticed... And despite what you may conclude from watching me eat stuff in my videos, I stay away from Milk Shakes as I find them a little too filling!!!

    Well, RWYs numbers come literally from the magnetic direction of the needle of your compass. So If one is to stand right on the threshold of say RWY 25 and they have a compass with them it would indicate approximately 250 degrees. I say approximately because the magnetic north pole moves all the time!!! Every few years it shifts so much that the compass indication would change by a whole 1 degree! And so the RWY numbers are rounded. Say, If you have a compass showing 249 degrees well that's RWY 25, but If your compass shows 243, that's RWY 24. Every few years RWY numbers have to change and literally people erase the white paint showing 25 and write the new one 24, so in theory the runway seems to be moving but in practice it's always there, at it's same location. However the North Magnetic Pole therefore your compass indication as well as the cockpit's instruments indication would change over time.
    Fun fact - to this day nobody knows exactly how the Magnetic Pole works, but we know how to make use out of it!
    This was from a pilot, who loves your videos. Aviation is truly a magic!
    Cheers everyone! :))

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can't rely on North actually being North, what hope is there!!! I guess the name of the runway is only relevant to the pilots and the airfield so the public don't know and won't care if the 25R runway they've landed on for years suddenly becomes 24R!

  • @AE53TZJ

    Matt, how many takes of the intro did you have to do, to get it perfectly timed for a plane ;)

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ha... One take actually... It wasn't quite perfect but the planes were only coming over every 3 or 4 minutes and I didn't have that long available for making the entire video so I stuck with it... One of the hardest bits as you probably know yourself is that you can never tell if a shot worked until you whack it through the editing software but fortunately these "outdoor broadcast" shots seemed to have worked!
