Swiss and the French: Hold our croissants and fondue Basel's and Geneva's airports are both by the borders. Geneva has a French sector for those arriving from French destinations who want to directly exit into France and avoid Swiss customs, Basel's has two customs areas (one Swiss, one French). Basel's airport is also 4 kilometers from Germany
Not quite the same as stepping off a commercial flight and the exit doors of the terminal building that you can choose from are physically located in different countries. Basel certainly couldn't do that. If they wanted to, Geneva could put a terminal on the other side of the runway for arrivals into France, but you'd still need to connect them by a tunnel under the runway or something. At Tijuana, the airport terminal is squeezed into the same side of the runway as the international border. None of the gates are more than 100m from the United states. As Noel states in the video, it's a rather unique situation.
Wait I've been to Geneva airport from London and I wasn't offered the option to cross French customs. How does this works ? I know part of the runway is on the French side.
@@antonczerwinske5910 Well, unless both Wikipedia and Google maps are both in error, what you say is not true. The airport is clearly in France, but the airport appears to be jointly administered by France and Switzerland. It appears to be more than 2 miles (3.2 km) from Germany.
The CBX is brilliant. When I lived in California, I've done it a few times to get flights to other parts of Mexico. It is cheaper. TJ is a fun city. The birthplace of the Cesar Salad!
Yeah, our recent Mexico City trip from San Diego was $110 round trip nonstop 3 hours,, but flying from San Diego to Mexico was $550 round-trip, with one stop in Houston adding two hours. But I will say this, never again on viva, I'm totally going to pay the extra 30 bucks for Aeromexico. Mostly because it seems like viva was changing flight times so much, and it direct seem like Aeromexico wasn't. Also my daughter swears by Aeromexico , apparently, is much more comfortable.
Watching this brought me good memories, I'm Mexican, I did my flight training in San Diego during 2011-2012, so I did lots of touch and gos in Brown Field, a few years later I became a pilot for Volaris, I was based in Tijuana for 4 years from 2015 to 2019, then I left for another company... It is strange, everything felt so familiar for a second, I even recognized the flight attendant at 5:09. By the way, we used to do the ILS Rwy 09 into Tijuana when the Santa Ana winds were prevailing. The CBX is very convenient, I used it a few times. Thanks for the video!
Having lived for many years in San Diego, I have to say that the CrossBorder Terminal is a godsend - and I never thought I would ever say that about an airport. I used to drive along the main road that runs along the border on the US side, and look across empty fields to the airport on the other side of the fence and wonder - why isn't there a way to access it from here? There are two main automobile border crossings into Tijuana, one to the east and one to the west of the airort. Neither of them provide easy access to the airport. The ability of San Diegans to fly in/out of TIjuana to other parts of Mexico and South America, saves time and money. Almost all flights departing from San Diego go north to Los Angeles and then south. And a friend can drop you off by car on the USA side, and not have to wait in line for two hours to cross back over the border from Mexico.
So many memories for me in this video - I have lived on both sides of the Border, have used Tijuana Airport many times and have crossed the CBX Bridge a few times. I remember when it first opened. Thanks for this video, loved it.
Well, yeah... many private pilots fly from one airport up and around a town for tourists or personal enjoyment and arrive back at the same airport after their flights -- effectively going only just a few meters down the runway or none if we're counting the distance from where the plane gets parked. In fact, that's usually how you get flight training, at least in the beginning. I don't think it's as weird as you think to fly from a small airport to another one, even if they're nearby. Of course, you're not getting on a 747 to do that... but regional airports large enough to offer commercial flights on jumbo jets aren't flying to nearby airports.
Not mentioned in the video are two super-projects at the location. One is the "Nuevo Edificio Procesador" that will create an international in-transit area for overseas flights at Tijuana Airport. That building should open by December 2021. It'll work with the CBX bridge. Foreigners will land and won't have to pass through Mexican immigration and customs. The other is the "Metrolink Airpark" at Brown Field. There's only limited information on that project. But it should create the possibility of catching regional flights from Brown Field.
Actually if you want to see an airport that is really in two countries go to the Geneva Switzerland (and France) airport. Part of the runway is in France and part in Switzerland and there are parts of the terminal in France and parts in Switzerland. Depending on the flight you arrive on the Swiss side or the French side. Flying from Paris for example, you arrive in Sector France as a domestic flight. You can then walk to the Swiss part and clear Swiss customs. Both sides have rental car counters, etc.
That’s false. GVA lies 100% within Switzerland. All of its facilities and runways are in Switzerland as well. Its northern limit runs alongside the French border. When in 1946 the runway needed extension, the needed land was transferred from France to Switzerland, while a nearby Swiss territory of same size was transferred to France. Prior to Swiss entry into Schengen in 2008, Terminal 1’s F piers served solely French domestic flights. The rest served Swiss-bound flights. Since then border and customs have disappeared from F as it is a Schengen area.
There's a couple I can think of in Europe Basel / Freiburg / Mulhouse - 3 countries.... Geneva / Geneva - 2 countries (there's a french and swiss terminal)
We have one in Australia that crosses 2 states but even more crosses 2 time zones. So not at “same time” but at 2 times! It’s Gold Coast Coolangatta airport. Border crosses the runway so planes land and take off in 2 time zones. Terminal in Queensland

A lot of people who live here (San Diego) also will fly out of Tijuana when going to other international destinations because it's a lot cheaper as many times from SAN you have to fly out of LAX.

Hey Noel! Not sure if your still in Mexico, was gonna ask a suggestion video about the new airport being built in Santa Lucia Mexico, Aeropuerto internacional Felipe Ángeles, its curently being built, Maybe you can visit the sight and share with us behind the scenes of the airport being built! Great video today 👍
Santa Lucia is rubbish a third world country airport, Mexico has the most stupid president in the world. Still can´t believe why this dumbass president shut down the first world class airport to build a third world country airport.
We've been waiting for that to happen for a whole year already. It's been a nightmare for the border cities on both sides (specially for the American ones since the influx of Mexican tourists crossing was shut down, American citizens/residents can still cross the border down to Mexico and they keep doing so)
I was born in Mexico City but I live in Tijuana since the year 2000 you should some time revisit and listen to the interesting history of that old 747 SP that can be read "Global Peac embassadors" aircraft stuck on Tijuana`s airport since 2005
iTripReport has been to Tijuana airport before he lives in San Diego and it works out very well to check in in the United States then go through immigration and customs by walking over the border wall then go through security which saves people 2 hours by doing this!!!
There was also plans for Gibraltar, UK airport terminal to cross the border into Spain. Allowing Schengen/Internal flights to operate into Gibraltar and then exit straight onto the Spanish side of the border. But it neverh appened in the end, and even now you can still see the airport terminal building just come to an abrupt end at the fence where the Spanish side was supposed to be built. Now with Gibraltar potentially joining Schengen there is even less of a need for it.
You always make my day even in the difficult times! Lucky you that you still have the opportunity to travel and I cannot believe that you made it to the US again!
I live about 5 miles due west of Brown Field, and the amount of air traffic along the border is pretty crazy. US Marine Corp F-18's just flew overhead and we can generally see the flights going in & out of Tiajuana hugging the border, not to mention the occasional Navy plane flying into North Island on Coronado (directly across the bay from Lindbergh). Next time you're in San Diego & have an afternoon to kill, there are a couple of aviation "monuments" to check out.
CBX costs $19 USD or $34 RT (a little less in "low season"). The bridge is 390-foot (120 m). You missed the opportunity to calculate the cost per mile (or compare it to the cost per mile of your trip through MIA).
@@alexjones1017 i think it’s more so the safety and ease of the bridge. I don’t travel into tj anymore because it’s such a hassle. We’d have to leave our car parked on the other side and wait the whole line to go back into us. Now we just take a shuttle to CBX and come back through cbx as well.
@@Scorpio-- that would've been the case, except for the fact that nobody but US citizens/residents can cross by land for now. By attempting to cross you risk getting your visa revoked.
@@TheShady124 i thought he was an american resident, so thats why he didnt cross through the land border. Yes makes sense, only us residents/citizens/work visa holders can cross the land border at the moment.
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority conducted the study and initiation discussions with GAP which operates TIJ since SAN has limited capacity gate capacity to offer additional fights to Mexico. This led to the private development of the CBX which took presidential permits from both countries.
Great video! Your videos, especially your Mexico trip, are one of the most entertaining flight review/travel videos out there on TH-cam. Really love the videos, can't wait for more! As someone who lives in South Africa, your assessments of the airlines here were pretty spot on.

Geneva is another interesting example - located in France but it is the main airport for the Swiss city and also right on the German border. I know you can clear directly into either France or Switzerland but not sure if you can go directly into Germany (or if you even need to given France & German are both Schengen countries). Looking forward to your report!
Do you mean Basel? In France, but with a ‘Swiss side’ to clear customs and immigration a bit like Geneva, it’s also near the German border, but nothing to do with the airport. Geneva is in Switzerland with a ‘french side.’ They do share being torturous little airports in common too.
@@johncassels3475 Yes, Basel. I used to fly into Basel and catch a taxi across the border to my destination in Loerrach, Germany. Only a token border between Switzerland and Germany. Never had to make a stop going either direction. Same thing on the trams crossing.
Hi Noel, cheers for the video. Would never have known such an airport existed if not for your video. Wouldn't have even googled it. Thanks for the awesome content as always.
I live in San Diego and always wondered what Tijuana Airport was like. I'm based in Brown Field and it's complicated to fly in and out of there without entering Mexican airspace and avoid the A.I.D.Z. Next time you're in San Diego, let me know, I'll take you up in my Piper and give you an air tour of San Diego, if you want. Cheers from America's Finest City.
Gold Coast Airport (OOL) in Australia is in two different states, New South Wales and Queensland - the border crosses the runway half way down. So you can touch down in one state, and the plane leaves the runway in the other.
An the challenge is in Summer when NSW goes on Day Light Saving and Queensland doesn’t and when you turn on your phone it can be flipping between the two timezones!
This is why I subscribed to this channel recently, going airport to airport just to get a 1 minute video side of the wall on the U.S. side! Most people would had just left it with the video from the Mexican side.
Upon looking into this and thinking about it, it actually kind of makes sense. I'm willing to bet that because of how busy that border crossing is, it takes less time to load that stuff onto the plane, fly it over and unload it, than it would to truck it over and deal with border agents.
Had to do something similar last September to go from Tijuana Beach to the US. It was such a dumb trip, but I got to try those Dreamliners in business class, so it wasn't the worst.
Fascinating! Living in border areas can be very interesting to say the least. I assume you could walk over the bridge to get back into Mexico instead of the reverse round trip?
I've used CBX several times and I can asure you that is correct. Even now with the border closures, Mexico's borders are still open to tourists. He could've checked in on the USA side, and then walked through that bridge directly into the Tijuana airport to clear customs, as long as he had a departing flight booked. But then, he could've not gotten back into the USA, which is why I assume he didn't showed that part.
The easiest way to fly between Tijuana and San Diego is fly to Los Cabos SJD with Volaris or Vivaaerobus and the directo tu San Diego SAN with Alaska Airlines
Lovely adventure on a variety of airlines and flights just to cross the road! It’s videos like this that I love watching time after time. Please continue to provide this great content! ✈️
I been doing that trip for work many times, what i do is from tijuana to cabos with volaris and then alaska airlines to san diego, but hey yours looks fun too hahaha grat video.
Bzzt! The airport is in the United States of Mexico. It has a bridge to Alto California. Will Noel be reviewing Basel Airport next? When this was proposed, AeroMexico was flying a 777 from MEX to NRT via TIJ. San Diego at the time did not have service to Asia due to the short runways there. JAL now fliies SAN to Japan with a 787.
When I saw the title, I assumed you were talking about the program that allows people flying to the US from certain airports to clear US Customs and Immigration at the departure airport. I experienced this in Toronto a few years ago and its a bit odd in a way. You’re obviously geographically in Canada, but in a sense you’re in the US too, as you’ve already cleared US Immigration and Customs. Your flight will arrive into a domestic terminal/gate at the US airport, and you can proceed directly to the exit, baggage claim, or a connecting flight the same as if you were arriving from New York, Chicago, LA, etc.
There's another airport which is operated by two countries it's Basel airport. It's located in france but it is still operated by switzerland and france with a lot of passengers from southwest Germany. Due to the Schengen treaty you can of course cross the borders within in the airport but the different parts are still remaining and running. For e.g language and currency.
My man really did fly halfway around the world just to cross the street. 😂😂😂 I’m not sure what to say beyond that, but thank you for enlightening me to this little bit of arcana!
I’ve seen a similar airport like this in Vientiane, Laos. Where if you were to depart from RWY13, you’d have to do a sharp right on the climb to avoid crossing the Mekong River into Thailand. You should give that a checkout too
Same with Gibraltar airport if you approach from west to runway 09. You have to avoid Spanish airspace and approach from south and make a low altitude right turn over Gibraltar Bay just about two kilometres before airport. And of course if you take off towards west from runway 27, you have to make a sharp turn. Quite often this is not an issue because most flight fly over Spain anyways, but if they don't, then they follow this procedure. I heard also that this more a political issue than anything else.
Makes you wonder which came first -- the border or the airport? I mean I'm sure the border was there before the airport was built (unless the airport was much smaller and thus expanded at some point closer to the border...) I mean a similar problem of expansion is something some airports in the US are facing (like Las Vegas) where there is talk of building another airport for Las Vegas east of the city to handle additional traffic.. and even Chicago's O'Hare airport has been expanded greatly over the past 50 years from what it used to (as I imagine a lot of airports have been over the past few decades since air travel is cheaper now then it has been decades ago and more people are flying). Your tip about leaving from LA. via the bridge and flying out of Mexico is a good tip and something I never thought would be that much cheaper but maybe it is.
I used to live in Los Angeles with family near Mexico City. We would go through Tijuana several times to fly down to Mexico City. It was always cheaper since you didn’t have to deal with international taxes on the plane tickets. However, I did fly an interesting route once many years ago. It was on now defunct Mexicana de Aviacion. It was from Cuernavaca to Guadalajara to Tijuana to Los Angeles. Also, there used to be an airline in Mexico called Aerolineas Internacionales (ironically, they were a Mexican domestic airline only with no international flights). They used very old, retired aircraft (i.e., 727-100’s) and Tijuana was one of their bases. I flew on them a few times to and from Tijuana on the way to Cuernavaca (2 hours south of Mexico City). I miss going through Tijuana and glad that they finally built the bridge that crosses the border. You use to have to drive into Tijuana and then wait for hours to cross back.

I live in LA, but most of the time I have to fly to Mexico I use the CBX to fly from Tijuana because flights are cheaper. This was a cool video.
This is so dumb in the best possible way hahaha That was so much fun, tHANKS NOEL LOL
Though i'm not into politics, taking that longest route just to get across the road, less than a 100 yards,is definitely a facepalm moment, for sure!
All he had to do was get a taxi to Otay border, then, 20 min later he's in USA. 🤦♂️
@@Scorpio-- yeah I was so confused lmao
It's great how you manage to find these obscure but ultimately really interesting facts.👏👍🤝
Noel never dissapoints me with any of his vids keep up the good work
Thank you Mark!
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed them .
I would love to see @johnnyHarris do a breakdown of this unique border situation. Great vid Noel. thank you.
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road? A: To get to the other side.
Q: Why did the the cow cross the road? A: To get to the udder side.
Q: Why didn't Noel cross the road? A: b/c this video wouldn't have been as awesome!
@@PhilBehan87 I did indeed mean Basel. Sorry, I had a brain fart and wrote down the wrong name. Thanks for the correction.
I live in SD and god I have been waiting for you to finally visit!
He was here once before, though only for a couple hours.
@@N1120A I remember! That was when he did the around the world trip :)
If you like airports which straddle borders, try the EuroAirport in Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, or the Geneva Airport
This video was awesome!
I would love to know who the music was by that accompanied this video. It complimented it sooooo well!
A.I.D.Z?
CONGRATS ON 200K 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Noel love your video. I fly to SAN from YVR 8 times a year. Most of the times, I will transfer to TIJ and fly to Colombia. To save money and time.
Very interesting and you always learn something everyday.
Crazy and brilliant at the same time!
Noel, as well as Basel Mulhouse airport, that is in Switzerland amd in France!
This is why I subscribed to this channel recently, going airport to airport just to get a 1 minute video side of the wall on the U.S. side! Most people would had just left it with the video from the Mexican side.
I used the CBX bridge it is completely convenient it saves you lots of time
Noel, Mexico is in the Americas. It’s US airspace. Please don’t unintentionally disrespect all Americans who are not US Citizens!
Thanks
There's actually an almost daily FedEx 757 flight from Tijuana to San Diego. The flight plan is actually rather hilarious haha
Noel another great vlog in the series !
He said because hes neither mexican or american he cant at the present time because of covid.
The easiest way to fly between Tijuana and San Diego is fly to Los Cabos SJD with Volaris or Vivaaerobus and the directo tu San Diego SAN with Alaska Airlines
That, or somehow ship himself into the daily 10 minute FedEx flight (FX69) between TIJ & SAN. lol
Take care always I'm always injoying you're vlog due to pandimic 💯💯💯
There’s also Basel/Mulhouse Airport in France/Switzerland
There's another airport which is operated by two countries it's Basel airport. It's located in france but it is still operated by switzerland and france with a lot of passengers from southwest Germany. Due to the Schengen treaty you can of course cross the borders within in the airport but the different parts are still remaining and running. For e.g language and currency.
My man really did fly halfway around the world just to cross the street. 😂😂😂
I’m not sure what to say beyond that, but thank you for enlightening me to this little bit of arcana!
Genf/Geneve/Geneva - Switzerland and France
hey the gate that you disembarked on that's the same gate I used to board my recent flight to chihuahua its nice seeing a place I know on your youtube
That’s great. I used to travel between Brownsville and Matamoros for work a few years ago. That was NOT fun!
GENEVA also is service for two countries France and Switzerland
I’ve seen a similar airport like this in Vientiane, Laos. Where if you were to depart from RWY13, you’d have to do a sharp right on the climb to avoid crossing the Mekong River into Thailand. You should give that a checkout too
Laos is on my list for sure. Those MA60s are calling me again!
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To show Noel how it's done.
This is the best chicken joke ever
this is my home airport! i love it it may not be as big a s some airports but I love it
Makes you wonder which came first -- the border or the airport?
Thank you for sharing.
Well done for 200k subs noel.
