    A few from me… all BA.
    1. LHR to MIA - PE to CW £550 at check-in desk - May 2022
    2. MIA to LHR - PE to CW $625 at check-in desk - May 2022
    3. LHR to PRG & PRG to LHR, I travelled in CE and wife travelled Economy as I had a flight voucher which would mean ‘losing’ part of the vouchers value if I travelled in Economy. Spare seat next to me on both legs, asked cabin manager nicely and we sat together both ways AND they even offered the business service - August 2024.

    Last year I flew on a BA flight from London to Toronto. Last year was my big birthday (40) and in 2019 I was very unwell. I thought I was going to die. So, I decided to go and see everything on my bucket list (nice present to myself also for my birthday).
    I was so happy to see Niagara Falls and to go on holiday away from all the stresses, I decided to give the cabin crew some chocolates with a note. It wasn't alot but I just wanted to say thankyou for taking me to tick off a bucket list item.
    4hrs into the flight, I was watching Sex and the city. There was some nude scenes and the two men next to me (who I wasn't travelling with), were laughing. So I was laughing too out of shere embarrassment.
    Then the cabin crew manager came over to me and asked me to bring my belongings. I was thinking I was in trouble for laughing a little louder than normal.
    She told me to go with her to the front of the plane. So I walked with her, worried I was in trouble.
    The cabin crew manager sat me in a business class seat, put my bags in the over head locker and apologised to me for not moving me sooner. She had been busy. Again I was confused..she proceeded to tell me that they were really touched by my note and the chocolates and wanted to do something nice for me and that was moving me into a business class seat for the remainder of the flight (which was another 4hrs). In that time....every member of crew came over to me to thank me for the Chocolates and had a lovely chat with me. They kept bringing me so much food, drinks, an amenity kit, BA branded chocolate etc. I was so overwhelmed. I wasn't expecting it. One crew member said they also moved me because not once did I ask to be upgraded (paid or for free) and they liked that i was a genuine person.
    I was very happy in my economy seat and was so relaxed, but the BA crew made me feel so special. They even gave me a thankyou card where everyone signed it, even the captain.
    I spent 3 days in Toronto, 3 days in Niagara Falls and 4 days in New York. This was at Christmas time, so was so magical and special.

    Breakfast and a Daddy Matt video, what a treat! I use that post-booking upcharge strategy a lot with American Airlines, which is quite beneficial for tier point running onto my BAEC account. What's special about AA is that on domestic routes, you can upgrade from Basic Economy straight into First Class usually for just 50 quid. So that can mean the difference between earning 5 and earning 60 tp on a segment. This sort of direct upgrade is not available on Delta nor United (don't know about Alaska or Hawaiian), where you have to be booked in Main Economy before you can browse any upgrade offers. However with United's Basic, you can still ala carte other perks such as a lounge pass (all-day at all their lounges at all the airports you're visiting!), priority access, baggage allowance, etc.

I sometimes see that premium economy is available at the time of booking for very little extra. Last year I paid only £25 extra per person for 7 people for premium on the homeward leg. I have even seen premium priced below economy when speculatively looking at flights. I have also seen business class for around £1000 return. So, don’t assume you can’t afford a better seat - take a glance at all options.

    Great video as always, Matt! In July, I flew BA LHR-RUH for business. I was originally booked on the cheapest ticket-economy without checked baggage-but I'm a Gold status holder. A couple of days before the flight, I received a message saying I'd been upgraded from WT to WTP-great news!

    Fascinating! I don't fly very often & the only upgrades I have been offered is the Exit Row with extra legroom for free. On one airline I was one of the first to check in & was offered the exit row seat as I checked in. I guess the agents are told to offer the exit row seats to the first passengers who look somewhat able bodied. Another time I was called up just before boarding and was offered the exit row seat. They have to look for a suitable person. If it is a long haul flight the best economy upgrade you can get is an aisle seat even if you have to pay for it.

    Interesting video Matt. I remember in the mid 80's as a teenager coming back from Orlando with my parents and the guy from the family we'd met over there flying back on the same 747 BA flight asking if they'd give us a complimentary upgrade for 8 people from economy to business. I believe he travelled a lot with BA in business. They did upgrade us all so we could sit upstairs behind the pilots in the 747's 'hump'. I believe there was only like 16 seats up there. I had a free upgrade on a PE flight to IAD due to the lower cabins being oversubscribed. I was in DC for one day of meetings and was returning on the next days return flight 25hrs later. Figuring it'd be the same crew (after their rest day) I asked cheekily on the way out if there was any chance of getting a lie flat bed for the return as I'd be working all day and just wanted to sleep. A bit of friendliness went a long way (plus a near empty flight) and I was ecstatic when the purser tapped me on the shoulder on the way onboard and directed me to the middle club seat at the rear of the A380 upper deck cabin (so direct aisle access both sides). It really helped the cabin was 20% sold, I had no neighbours in the centre row of 3 and snored all the way home!

    I was a British Airways Cabin Service Director. I would rarely upgrade onboard unless there was a specific reason, such as a broken seat in another cabin and there were no other seats in the same class. There have been cases of passengers doing this deliberately. But every upgrade is recorded and the airline catches up with these people and bans them. The problem with onboard upgrading is that the aircraft is catered for the actual number of passengers. Rarely are there spare meals. Also, you cannot pay to upgrade onboard. There is no way to take the money.
    The passenger most likely to be upgraded before boarding would be Gold card holders. Airlines like to recognise and reward their most loyal customers.

    Deffo agree re the 'empty seats are a revenue generating opportunity till the last min' which has been pushed to the extreme in recent years not just via online upgrade offers, but I've seen people in economy take their seat & then request an upgrade before take off. Seen it twice on Emirates, although I always got the vibe they were brits who worked in UAE thus had employers pay their base fare, hence the incentive to treat yourself to an upgrade. Seen the same thing with train travel now, you can bid for a allocation of 1st class tickets which are usually cheaper. Would love if airlines did that but they never will imo. Keep the masses & hoi polloi out...hence premium economy.

Far from being a rare treat, there was a spell when I was actually genuinely disappointed that the gate went green and let me through rather than beeping on red. Think I’ve been moved up about six times so far, a few times at check-in and a few with that lovely beep at the gate. Best one was with Eithad about 15 years ago from JNB-AUH when I scored an upgrade from business to first at boarding time. Turned out the seat wouldn’t recline properly and the entertainment system was on the blink. One email to the airline later they agreed to deposit the equivalent miles for the trip in F into my account which I used on a return economy flight to Australia to watch the 2010/11 Ashes. Better to be lucky than good…

    Very amusing, Matt, though was hoping to see you in a wedding dress. Intrigued to know what sum of the paid upgrade is for Air France La Premiere. Even though its new J product seems very worthwhile. I've only ever paid for an UG once, many years ago, on CX. Back when seats weren't lie flat, just deep recline. It didn't help when the agent swiping my card (she had to bring the old school credit card machine, which had carbons on board) and then cheerfully told me I likely would've been upgraded anyway.

    On our recent first gold status flight LHR economy to Dublin we were hoping to get a bump up to club, didn’t happen but the family/friends/crew definitely did work as said the wheels had literally had just left the ground the plane was still climbing & seat belt sign on when a hand popped through the business curtains & beckoned someone from the very back fowards within seconds two men ran straight past us & into club, I did feel like sticking a leg out to trip them & bag the seats for myself & my wife 😂. I was surprised that they were called forward so early surely breaking the safety rules but hey ho it’s who you know what not you know that gets you up the ladder. Hopefully we’ll get upgraded on a more rewarding translantic flight next time.

    Great stuff. Interesting comments from fellow Followers too.
    On from my last comment about supportering VS moving to LHR, here is an opposite experience.
    Never mind an upgrade, in the 90's BA didnt like my support for opening up LHR for customer competition so - whilst being given a tour of the control tower at JFK, awaiting my BA flight home, I was told "we would normally like to upgrade our visitors but there appesrs to be a note in your booking stating "do not up-grade under any circumstances'!

    Here's another one: being a nice, friendly person when something goes wrong on the flight. Back when I was a kid, I remember noticing some kind of commotion in the row ahead of me. Some guy was being an absolute jerk about something- I think it was because he was seated next to a baby. It didn't get to the level where he would have to be kicked off the plane, but something had to be done because he was making everyone uncomfortable. A little old lady from further back offered her seat to the guy, and was so nice and polite to him and everyone else that everyone calmed down. A few minutes after she had settled in, an F/A came by and said as a way to say thank you for helping them sort the situation, they were offering her a seat in First Class. Obviously you shouldn't be nice just out of expectation of a reward (or god forbid demand one after helping out), but F/As have been known to help out those that help them out.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being nice can help.... I didn't mention it in the video but I once got on a United plane - years back - and I'd been given a seat that someone else was already occupied - it had been double booked.... I was polite to the attendant as she tried to sort it out and she asked the other person to move so I could have the seat.... Then she took the other person forward into the business cabin.... Being nice may not always work!!!

    There seems to be another way of getting upgraded even though this is hardly useful for anyone but business travelers. I had several occasions on which I bought tickets for colleagues traveling with me on the same flight. This ranged from two to six seats on a flight in different bookings, paid for with the same credit card. It then happend regularly (maybe 40% of the flights) that I was called up by the gate agent and handed a business class ticket before boarding even started. I guess the logic behind this drills down to spending a lot of money with the airline or as a benefit for attracting new potential customers. Happend to me on LH (frequently) and Swiss (once).
    I don't get "the beep" very often outside of the main vacation season but within it, again with LH, it happens regularly (mayby 10% - 15%), when traveling to one of their hubs or from one of their hubs to a smaller german airport.
    Also short note: Aegean gives out 4 upgrade vouchers for gold members not 2. Silver members get 2.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for that - great info on a scheme I don't know too much about.... And I did make a mistake about Aegean - I only had 2 in my account and didn't remember I'd originally gotten 4 as I'd only used 2 of them

    Managed to get the magic beep BA Singapore to Sydney due to 102% load factor, Club to First on an Amex 2fer redemption. What a shame we don't operate like the Americans, far more routine to reward status holders with upgrades when business has space even when economy isn't oversold. Still keeps you going back for more as you need to maintain your status which is even more likely given the feeling of being valued with the upgrades.

    Ended up as the only one bumped up, although they had 4 more free business class seats. Given that my tier is just silver with Finnair, I wonder if it it was due to my connection flight being premium economy. Unless nobody else on the flight was signed up to Finnair Plus. Another way to get upgraded on a BA flight ( Heathrow/Gatwick to TFS on A320) is to board last and as you walk through Business ,if you see a free seat , just sit down. Since Covid, BA operate a no middle seat person in Business Class on the A320 on certain routes, so you need to make sure that at least two seats are empty, I lost my Silver Status in March and have upgraded myself twice and no one has said anything..

    I’ve never had a beep. On a recent trip from AUS - LHR all our family were in business but husband booked himself in PE. At check in I asked if there were spare seats to pay to upgrade him but was told to ask on boarding which I thought was strange. The couple next to us also asked to pay to upgrade but was told Business was full. Once boarded there were so many empty seats in Business I couldn’t understand why we hadn’t been permitted to upgrade. I have Gold and so do other members of the family. The suite next to me was empty so I spoke to the lead Cabin agent and explained what had happened at the gate - was told I’ll see what I can do. 5 minutes later my husband appeared. I was so grateful but why they left so many seats empty is strange particularly when people were requesting to pay. I also have only been offered a paid upgrade between purchase and flight once.
