    Old video, and generally useful, but a couple of problems to point out; 1) You replaced the Nivomat shock with a standard shock which needs different springs to work properly. 2) I think most people would miss the fact that you took the shock mount off the old damper and put it on the new one without noting that it should be re-used or replaced on the new shock.

      Also - when removing the top nut (and when re-installing it) you need to hold the shaft with a torx bit so the shaft doesn't spin when you're removing/ reinstalling the nut.

    Wonderful videos and very informative without all the narration. My wife wanted a Volvo and so I'm getting familiar with this vehicle vs my old BMW's and other such cars. I replaced the front struts with no issues thanks to your videos. Rear shocks appear to be even more simplistic. Thanks again!

    Why did you fit a standard shock absorber when the one you removed was a Nivomat self levelling shock?
    If you swap Nivomat shocks out for standard ones you need to replace the springs too - both sides obviously.

      5 out of 10 Volvo specialists, and 9 out of 10 engineers, will tell you that such a change is unlikely to result in a noticeable difference in handling or braking. The self leveling shocks are fitted to compensate for the heavier loads which a 7 passenger car may carry. The owner may be the sole occupant most of the time, with an occasional passenger, in which case, the self-levelers may not be needed. If money is a concern, then the choice in such a case is clear. The springs are the same, self leveling shocks or standard. Thank you for you concern about the shocks. The customer was quite satisfied I'm sure.

    Just a quick tip since I did this job myself today. You MUST use an impact to remove the top nut. A socket and ratchet alone will not work. It allows the damper shaft to spin and the nut will never come off. This also applies to putting the new nylock nut on the new damper. An impact does the job and does it well.

      I’ll add another quick tip: using an impact is no guarantee that the damper won’t spin anyways. There’s some chance you’ll have to resort to more extreme measures.

    My replacement shock lower end was about 2" below the bolt fitting and the shock had to be compressed carefully to align the holes in order to insert the bolt. The shock tended to wedge sideways causing the holes to misalign. It took some careful angle wedging to align the holes to insert the bolt. Somewhat of a pain, for sure.

    Your replacing the stock Nivomat shocks (Auto Leveling) with regular shocks. You also need to replace the coil springs too. There is a conversion kit available. Can't say I blame anyone for getting regular shocks, Nivomat replacements are about $400 and change.

    • @autodocuk
      @autodocuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right, the Nivomat suspension is much more expensive than the stock chassis. For the correct selection of spare parts, we recommend that you contact our contact centre.

    Using chrome extensions and sockets with an impact gun is a dangerous thing to do - the socket will likely shatter at some point. That's why they make impact extensions and sockets.

    The top nut should be removed and installed by using a torx to hold the damper still and a crow foot key to turn the nut.
