Some thoughts here cause funky stuff: I thought about making it more dynamic/flashy but honestly just wanted it to be an argument between two people who, if not friends, then at least to some degree cared about each other. So instead of anything too physically dynamic, I opted to focus more on expressions. I try to keep gods less expressive than mortals, so their anger/emotions show in more outward stuff (lightning, waves) Athena is the most expressive out of all of them, but even then most go into the eyes. She is based on an owl ye :D the ghosts aren't really specifically for the dead, because Penelope and Telemachus are there. It's more like. Since they appear at "just a man" it's sort of a visual reminder, of what he's lost and what he still stands to lose.
Your storytelling is brilliant it really does fit the gods of ancient Greece and the idea of Odysseus going toe to toe with Athena and being so chill about it was perfect. I look forward with excitement to what you may come up with next it doesn’t have to be all flashy either. Also if you’re a god and you ask yourself “where did I go wrong” you gotta ask yourself am I a god. Lol
The “just a man” portion was definitely one of my favorite parts of this, exactly how I’d imagined an animated version of this song would go- like yes, it is an emotionally charged argument, but also there’s an underlying melancholic vibe to it all
My jaw dropped at the “just a man” line, also love how the living are on the left half and the dead (Polites) appear on the right, and later on opposite sides (when surrounding Odysseus)
What would've been cool as well, expressing Odysseus and Athenas expression further is at the part where she throws the arguement that he is just a man, Odysseus would just leave in anger while she sings. Still great storytelling!
The "You're Alone" part where you can tell Odysseus didn't mean for it to come out harsh, and you can tell it really hurts Athena. Such great animation
@@joeythecar0_099 that she is alone, that she prideful selfish and vain, and that she dont care about if people live or die, so she will be always alone
It's a reference to the fact that Athena is the virgin goddess, which is usually a good thing im Greek mythology (basically, if you're a woman in that world, you're either a saint or very promiscuous, so the former is more worshipped than the latter, especially in days where safer sex is not possible). Anyway, Odysseus is throwing what is usually a compliment in her face. It's brilliant, especially since Athena does the same thing with Telemachus in a positive way (calling him a little wolf after the suitors call him the same, but she calls them dogs)
Fun fact, eyes are the windows to the soul, so if their eyes are incomplete, you could interpret that as being humanity itself as a concept that's missing, things like compassion, humility, things contradictory to all-powerful beings who don't *need* to be like that. could be why Demigods often become heroes, they have the Divine Spark of Greatness but also the chance at the human heart
I love how Athena cranes her neck while she’s singing and trying to make her point. It really gives her that owl characteristic and slips into the uncanny valley. Visually, she’s human, but the subtle points of her design from the way she moves to her lack of pupils to her unnatural height hint at the raw power and ethereality hidden under the surface
And the fact she thinks of herself better than every mortal when really though being so smart she doesn’t have any emotional intelligence or the ability to feel like a human does. Which makes Odysseus in a way a lot more smart than she is.
@@efaristi9737 I think they don’t have as much emotional awareness as humans. They live pretty much solitary lives. Hades living all alone until he finds Persephone, Zeus and May others barely see their sisters and brothers. I feel they don’t have as much emotional intelligence as a human because of how much they live in solitude. There are stories where they meet but most of the time it feels like they live alone. Who can blame them for not having the connections humans do? Most gods won’t meet any other gods they don’t know for a long time and humans are afraid of them in a way. Whereas those humans always meet new people we are always connecting. Maybe I’m diving too deep into this but I have a feeling the gods have a disconnect to empathy and compassion. They can feel that yes but not as strongly as humans feel it. They don’t have the same circumstances as humans either. Those being death, sickness and that. Thus not having as many chances to understand grief and giving them a disconnect from human emotion.
@@gailasprey7787 I don't know where you took that from. Aside from sea gods that live in Poseidon palace and chtoniens gods that live, for most of them, in Hades palace, all the gods live on Mount Olympus. They have courts made of lesser gods and Daimons, i don't see where in that they are alone. They literally often partakes in feasts which are like family dinners to us.
Interestingly since Athena was described as γλαυκόφθαλμη in Iliad which has several meanings since glaukos means "light/pale blue" so in that meaning it is translated as "shiny-eyed" or "blue-eyed". However glauka is also the owl in ancient Greek so her prosonym can be translated also as "owl-eyed"
I saw that too. It makes sense, her sacred animal is the owl because she's the goddess of wisdom. So I thought it was cool to see the resemblance to an owl.
Yea but maybe she didn't want a relationship with anyone 😂 maybe she liked being alone. Like Artemis. My Aro/Ace home girl. Well.. i relate with the ace part.
@@kitty97ableno, they meant like a relationship in general, not a romantic relationship. It’s not “the closest thing she had to a relationship” it’s “the closest relationship she had”.
@@kitty97able I didn't mean "relationship" as in a romantic relationship but a friendship. I'm sorry if I made it sound like it. It's pretty clear in mythology in general Athena has zero interest in romance (more like a negative infinitive), but she still has relationships/connections with other characters like Pallas, Zeus, Perseus, Heracles and Telemachus. Her most developed relationship, in my opinion at less, is with Odysseus, but as a "we are so similar and have many things in common let's be best friends" kind of relationship.
@@custosluna8433 well yea i get that 😂 it's not your fault I'm reading into things too and when talking about reaktionships romantic is the first thing that comes to mind. And maybe she likes living alone, like she's introverted 😂😂😂
@custosluna8433 Ironically they did. In multiple parts of the poem they used similar methods and even had similar ways to see things. And they both are seen to be proud and reckless at times. It is tragic irony that they have so many common points
When Athena goes from grey to white at the “well at least I know what I’m fighting for” it feels like Odysseus is, for once, making her his equal. They’re playing on even ground.
It's a cool reading but definitely not intended. The artist probably just wanted to separate the two characters visually so the linework doesn't get all mixed up (since she was gray when they were overlapped)
Jorge Jay Herrens absolutely gets that agonizing emotion through his voice into these songs so well. He honestly could be the next if not better, Lin Manuel Miranda!!!
😂 Greatest protector of all? Athena is one of the worst goddess on the Greek pantheon, she is pride and vanity, she use mortals as pawns agains other gods, lets just remember that Athena dont have the ability to feel love, greek myth mentions that Athena is literally immune to love.

I love Athena's expression after the "You're alone!". At first she is hurt, surprised to be hurt at all by a mortals words, and the she visibly calms herself. You can see her giving up on him and retreating into her 'mortals are beneath divine beings' mindset, because he was right and she didn't even realize.
It's what Athena always did in the myths because her selfishness, vanity, and pride made her incapable of apologizing for her failures/wrongdoings. Athena never allowed herself to get close to anyone after Odysseus because she felt regret for the suffering she guided Odysseus to face, expecting him to come out unscathed and unchanged.
@@John-mg6ri I can't think of any greek god who apologised unless forced, ever. You? All gods are selfish, vain and prideful. Athena is actually an outliner in that she has taken a mortal student. From the top of my head (pun intended) i can't think of any gods who allowed themselves to be so deeply and personally invested in the mortals' affairs.
@@NebelTanz Aphrodite once fell in love with a Mortal, not the normal swing she normally had, because she actually stopped interacting with Ares to be with the man,but in some iterations Ares got jealous and sent a boar/became a boar to kill him.
@@John-mg6ri Yes, but it can be argued that Aphrodite acted that way out of her own selfishness, since while she was perhaps in love with him she made no effort to actually integrate herself into his life. I was unclear on my first definition. The major difference between Athena with Odysseus and almost every other god with their claimed mortals is the nurturing. Most gods expect their humans to sacrifice a part of themselves. Athena did the opposite, she helped Odysseus improve himself, taught him, gave him part of her knowledge, arguably the most important part of herself. This kind of investment almost entirely to the human's benefit is rarely seen in greek myths.
I see Athena as trying to teach him the basic rule "You either kill your enemies, or you leave them the fuck alone." His refusal to learn this lesson is literally the cause of all his misfortune, and she tried so hard, and despairs. Meanwhile, he broke, because he is "just a man" - I love how you communicate his frantic denial of her, and her grief of and for him.
No, the cause of his misfortune is that his way only works if he keeps his spite in check. The problems that follow don't come from his mercy, it comes from him mocking the cyclops' fate after beating him.
@victory8928 I wouldn’t say that the retelling is missing it, God games addressed it. it's primarily the audience that refuses to notice it and that the Gods' methods only work because they're unable to be retaliated against by the people they screw over. They don't have to worry about morality either. They won't die and be judged for the choices they made. All the people berating him so far, in universe, have a problem with his mercy but have no reason to bring up spite because they're actively being spiteful in those moments. Spite is natural for a God. They wouldn't normally address it, especially not when it would look hypocritical. Aphrodite addresses it, but she's not spiteful about it If Athena tried in 'my goodbye' she'd open herself up to the rebuttal. "You're doing the exact same thing I just did, spiting someone who has already screwed themselves over.."
I still feel like the gods' point still stands. Wether or not they're hypocritical doesn't matter because..... The fuck are the humans finna do in response? Kill them? Can't. It's a situation where he has to learn that the life he's living is VERY unfair. @@tetragaming6332
It's my little headcanon, but the way Athena delivers "this is my goodbye" multiple times sounds like she's trying to convince herself that she's not gonna involve herself with Odysseus, something she does end up doing later down the line in God Games
Also, the last few "goodbyes" use the note runs used in their first duet when they pair up, except she finishes on that solid single note that she started off with before she befriended Odysseus
@@eaglewatch1239 yes, I am aware that is what happens. How is the alone part really relevant? And I personally haven't read the Odyssey but I know enough to know some of the things that will happen. There's no requirement to have read the source material when you're experiencing an adaptation
@@vickymoon933 full disclosure I have not seen/heard the entire musical which deviates from the epic canon, but I wanna say this is after the cyclops encounter because of the anger and blood on his face. Athena is probably saying goodbye because of her disappointment at his lack of wisdom when revealing his name. Anyone who’s actually seen/heard the musical feel free to correct me!
I like how when Odysseus is talking with Athena he looks perfect, healthy, awake, but when she goes away then he looks tired and scratched up. I kind of shows how Athena seems to see the possibility of him being her perfect general but literally doesn't see how it has effected him along the way, hurt him in more ways than one and left him without sleep. It's good symbolism.
Gah, the expressions you give these characters always gets me, and Athena's surprise to hear Odysseus refer to her as a friend... And the visual of ghosts of his dead warriors surrounding Odysseus hurts. I love everything about this, your animatics have gotten me invested in the most banger musical I've listened to.
That's what pulls my heartstrings the most at that moment. Odysseus was debatably the closest being to Athena in the whole of Greek Mythology (okay, except maybe her owl). The fact she is surprised that he saw her as a friend shows how lonely her all existence has been.
I love that it IMMEDIATELY cuts to Athena after Odysseus made that stupid move. She really was like “NOPE. NOOOOOoooo buddy, I am NOT gunna be associated with THAT for the next millennium”
@@efaristi9737 There this whole thing where Athena gave the child of Circe and Odysseus a poisoned spear he used to kill him in his old age. The canonically nature of it is questionable but it’s in some versions so who knows.
@@thomascochran7907 Yeah, i see what you're talking about but there is nothing in it that say Athena is the one that gave him the spear. In some versions, he is even the son of Calypso, not Cirice. I like that there are brief flashes of emotion on her face. Even if she is all about logic and strategy there are buried feelings, she's lonely. Though she'd never admit and she probably was fond of Odysseus in a friendly way.
@@efaristi9737 The fact that Odysseus says "YOU'RE ALONE!" and she reacts like he hit the nail on the head of something she didn't realize until now would point to that. If it weren't right, she would simply not react but she looks shocked that he noticed. And just because you have tons of siblings doesn't mean you get along with any of them or they with you. You know the saying that people can feel lonely in a room filled with people because they can't connect with any of them? Pretty much that.
The fact is she is the goddess of strategies. You can´t have emotions in a war. You´ll lose friends and family. In the logical way Odysseus has failed as he decides to let the cyclope live. The Cyclope is a greater threat no matter what. To act with mercy isn´t a commen way. You can begin a war with emotions but not end it. There is no winner in a war. You´ll kill someones friends and families. And as a leader , as a general you have blood on your hands. You are leading your trops into death. That`s what she tried to teach him. Putting the emotions aside. Also Athena is the Goddess of wisdome. " One day you hear what i´m saying, one day you might understand" She talked to him. She said what was wrong and she gave him the time to answer. There are so many buried emotions in her acting and knowing that she is a Teacher, a Warrior, a wise woman this was not a goodbye from her. This was a lession. But often the wise ones stay alone because the truth is to hard to handle
Fantastic! I love how you added Polites holding the infant son of Hector and Penelope with Telemachus. It really hits home everything Odysseus wants, regrets, and has lost. This is my favorite song to date.
Even though Athena is so beautifully composed and cold, when she’s tearing into him, those little moments her mask falters when Odysseus calls her a friend and yells alone, broke me. Especially the small silence that follows. It’s so subtle, but I like to believe in those moments the goddess of wisdom experiences a bit of the pain Odysseus is juggling with. Loosing a friend, and now he’s mentor. Yet logic prevails and she leaves, because like she said he’s just a man, and one day he’ll understand. The detail in this is just chefs kiss. Incredible work!
In the end, I think it really is Athena who truly will understand what it is she lost with Odysseus...because she's just a goddess. Probably when history brings the Catholic god that takes away the followers and worshipers she has and denounces her as a false god, and she becomes nothing more than a literary figure rather than a goddess. Then she'll know what it was Odysseus was feeling.
@@girl1213 Oh no, in the song "Monster" it is made clear that Athena and Poseidon taught Odysseus the lesson that in effect, he must be cruel so that they will not be cruel to him.

I love the little reaction you gave Athena when Odysseus says he saw her as a friend. Like it genuinely never occurred to her that she could have had his friendship too. It adds to the "breakup song" energy this song already has.
And still her actions are so human she has emotions she cant fool me she cared even if she wont admit it for Odysseus here her words arent her emotions through she always says what she dont means hides her true emotions because its her duty to do so since she was trapped in Zeus Body with her brother and her mother metis Athena fought her way out she aint as oerfectas her mother metis through she got her fathers Zeus temper

In the original Odysseus never killed the child the Baby boy through a god through him from cliff while Odysseus thats true wated to raise him but was denied since the son adopted would bring his kingdoms downfall many more would have died
I never even thought of that! She won't admit it but she cares about him, so she gives him chance after chance to apologize, to beg her to show him a path to safety. But despite all her logic, or maybe because of it, she never expected him to blame her as well. He calls her out on all her own failings and forces her to hear his pain, and she can't understand it. So she says goodbye and means it, unaware that she's leaving a piece of herself behind on that ship.
Gonna blather about how you drew Athena for a little bit: The owl aspects are clear: the vaguely barn owl-esque structure of the features, the way the nasal part of the helmet bisects her face. Yet in addition, I see a degree of dollishness. The face resembles a mask. The features are simple, the way the mouth 'moves' is minimalistic, and while the uncanny nature of her movements can be described as birdlike, I'd say they also resemble that of an oddly jointed construct. Athena represents an inherently human concept, something that wouldn't necessarily exist without humans: the ideas of cleverness, of tactics and strategy. So her connect with humans is likely greater than that of, say, Poseidon, of oceans and monsters. Yet she's still removed from them. Her form is humanoid, but not human; her face an expressive mask.
This animatic represents the song so well; much like Wolfy said, it's an argument, not a setpiece. I particularly like Athena's expressions throughout; she's the goddess of wisdom, but pride has always been her fatal flaw, and having her constantly looking down on Odysseus due to her height, craning down to say her time's been wasted like she's literally talking down to him because she's the goddess and she knows best. And Odysseus, angry and hot-blooded and making it personal, staying in one place for most of the animation while Athena moves around him; he's grounded in the reality and looking at things from one angle, while Athena's taking in the bigger picture. Dunno if that was intentional, but it's certainly fitting. A great animatic about two friends who are both right and both wrong and too prideful to back down.
The pain is real. While I didn't have any idea what this musical is about, it still felt powerful. The expressions felt genuine, they both lost a friend. The frustration over that until-now trustworthy person not understanding why you stand here is noticeable. It was amazing.

I am in LOVE with your athena design. This entire animatic is such a good interpretation of the song, instead of making Odysseus angry and unreceptive (I've seen so many people interpret "You're ALONE" as a lashing out) he actually seems to hear what Athena is saying and does not enjoy this argument anymore than she does. They both clearly care about each other but vastly miscommunicated on what they wanted from their relationship, Odysseus trying to push through the strain that Athena's bestowed upon him. and you've done a great job showing the resignation in both of their faces because he can't do it anymore and Athena doesn't see the point.
such a small detail, but i love how with the shadow changes with the beat of the music, in the beginning it ended with him in the light, and at the end of the video he was in the shadow.
it’s like without athena there and her godly light, he’s left to fend for himself in the darkness. Athena’s presence, even if it wasn’t physical, was like a cheat that placed him in the limelight and blessed him, giving him the ability to overcome fear because after all, he had a goddess in his side! but now, without her there, he’s put in the darkness:

I really like how Athena turns away from Odysseus at the end, and for the entirety of that ending you can’t see Athena’s face. I’d like to think that is because she’s trying to hide her hurt from their separation, kinda shows that she at least cared, even if she didn’t know it.

I believe that Athena would be a lonely character, because she lives a immortal life with a strategic mindset in and out of battle. So pretty much she would keep friends and family at arms length, because she doesn't want to give a possibly of a future foe using any form of attachment against her. So when Odysseus called her out on it, it broke her facade and showed her emotion for a moment.
@@contractwolf6669 Honestly I don't feel sorry for her, with all the messed up thinks she done in Greek history. I like how Athena barely moves her mouth. Like she's speaking through both of their minds and never breaks her proper behavior until she gets upset. Man that's good 😁
I like the idea she was originally testing him to see if he would fight back against her leaving, cause she stayed around even after she said she was leaving and stayed listening to him talking back to her then when he crossed that line....that was when she knew there was no reason to stay
I love that little touch of Athena leaning in to call Odysseus a waste of effort spent, like it was an intentional effort to make it as painful as possible
Just wanted to say how i love the shift in Athena's expression from 2:12 to 2:15, like she's geniuniely hurt by what she's heard but then gets it together again... and the way she tilts her head is so owl-like i can't even-
I love the detail in when Odysseys says "You're alone!" the look on Athena's face goes from shocked, to hurt before going back to her normal stern expression ❤
huge huge fan of the unnatural athena head tilts. brings so much to her presence as a goddess and her cold, cruel pursuit of greatness. especially there on "your dead friends can attest." amazing.
I love your design of Athena, everything about her. (And your art style in general). You portrayed her reaction beautifully to the "You're alone!" It hurts so much more when you learn her backstory.
the ultimative platonic friendship breakup song! Also very cool animatic, especially the contrast between godly Athena and just a man odysseus is very strong.
I like how you visually represent the difference between a God and a Human. One is an immortal all powerful but incomplete being, the other can't rival in strength or lifespan, but has the one thing a God can never have, and that is Humanity.
it’s so sad that odysseus’s stupidest moment by giving a son of poseidon reason enough to curse him was also the action that caused him to lose favor with his patron goddess. if he had her blessing, he would’ve made it home real quick
Okay so I haven't seen this musical, and I want to preface this with that. I also like character analysis a bit and i wanted to do that. Uhh yeah, its just innacurate stuff im pointing out past this. I've been watching this on repeat for like ...a while. And the scene at 1:50 AGH I JUST. I'm a huge sucker for drama like this and how it's written and facial expressions. AND OH MY GOD YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. I love it so much. The scene is a goddes trying to regain her standing, cause she just got told that she A GODDESS that she can go. That Odysseus can be better without her. So I'd imagine she needs to regain her pride somehow. And that whole scene is her trying to regain it, she says these hurtful things but she doesn't look at him in the eye. Instead she chose circle him and then goes to STOOP DOWN TO him again. But not look him in the eye as she speaks in that scene. AND HER FACE AT 2:38! THE DETAILS
I love the way you made Ulysses' hair flow in the wind towards the end of the animatic, very reminiscent of the way Moses' does in the scene with the burning bush when God talks to him in the Prince of Egypt. Your inspirations definitely shine through in your work and im loving it!
Ohhhhh!!!!! I love this so much!! The expressions, Athena's slightly uncanny movements, the way that Odysseus smiles in his anger and hurt!!!! I think you really captured how Athena still is closed off and distant towards even the humans she is close to, always going for the most efficient (if ruthless) option. Thank you so much for your hard work!!
ahhh Wolfy you always get the expressions and movements so on point!! I love the way Athena is somewhat humanoid but also kind of unnatural, which also reflects on her movements! also, the flashes at the end that show him back on the ship are so cool!!
Some thoughts here cause funky stuff:
I thought about making it more dynamic/flashy but honestly just wanted it to be an argument between two people who, if not friends, then at least to some degree cared about each other.
You should do ruthless next with posiden

I love the way you draw Athena without pupils because it shows the gods as something almost human, as if there's something about them that's missing.

Visually, she’s human, but the subtle points of her design from the way she moves to her lack of pupils to her unnatural height hint at the raw power and ethereality hidden under the surface
Very true!
And the fact she thinks of herself better than every mortal when really though being so smart she doesn’t have any emotional intelligence or the ability to feel like a human does. Which makes Odysseus in a way a lot more smart than she is.
@@gailasprey7787 Gods feels the same emotions as mortals. The only things Athena don't feel is love and lust.

I love how Athena's character design actually looks like an owl that such an interesting take on her appearance I love it sm‼️‼️‼️
Ikr!! The owl design works so well and also adds to her godly/not-mortal vibe as a contrast to Odysseus

I saw that too. It makes sense, her sacred animal is the owl because she's the goddess of wisdom. So I thought it was cool to see the resemblance to an owl.

True, but it's usually because they believe their teachings/time are useless given to beings that have such short existences.
@@tetragaming6332that is the issue with this retelling it misses that whole aspect to go for the mercy thing
Aphrodite addresses it, but she's not spiteful about it
If Athena tried in 'my goodbye' she'd open herself up to the rebuttal.

" One day you hear what i´m saying, one day you might understand"

This!!!! Couldn't have said it better myself tbh!! It's truly just such a masterpiece,
In the end, I think it really is Athena who truly will understand what it is she lost with Odysseus...because she's just a goddess. So she says goodbye and means it, unaware that she's leaving a piece of herself behind on that ship.
I absolutely adore that Athena's face and mannerisms resemble that of an owl in a few of the scenes - like yesss, they are her symbol of power!
Gonna blather about how you drew Athena for a little bit:
The owl aspects are clear: the vaguely barn owl-esque structure of the features, the way the nasal part of the helmet bisects her face.

Real
Holy shit, you just made this even better
The pain is real. While I didn't have any idea what this musical is about, it still felt powerful. The expressions felt genuine, they both lost a friend. The frustration over that until-now trustworthy person not understanding why you stand here is noticeable. It was amazing.

HELL YEAH. Thank you for fueling my obsession with this musical
Never heard of Epic but damn I think I might. Also the part where Athena is like "I'll close the door and say goodbye", the way she turns her back on him is a nice touch
2:39 this part is so FREAKING cool !! 😳✨️
Polite's ghost holding the baby got me, man. I love your art, keep up the amazing work.
OMG I DIDNT NOTICE THAT BYE IM SOBBING
OH MY GOD??
Another absolute banger, absolutely adore Athena’s owl-like design
I love how you sad/surprised Athena looks when Odysseus tells her she's alone. Generally I love how you portray emotions, not only through their faces but also through body language!
Amazing work, keep it up!
Not Polites holding the baby, I'm bawling 😭😭
Well said! Couldn’t have said it any more eloquently.
It’s amazing how when athena says the second last “This is my goodbye” she sings it the way Odysseus sang “Warrior of the mind” with the said tone
I like how the dead sung "Just a Man" behind Athena, indication being that she feels the weight of their deaths as well
This song is the equivalent of getting the last message in a breakup text
such a small detail, but i love how with the shadow changes with the beat of the music, in the beginning it ended with him in the light, and at the end of the video he was in the shadow.
it’s like without athena there and her godly light, he’s left to fend for himself in the darkness. Athena’s presence, even if it wasn’t physical, was like a cheat that placed him in the limelight and blessed him, giving him the ability to overcome fear because after all, he had a goddess in his side! but now, without her there, he’s put in the darkness:
Athena’s helmet frames her face exactly like a barn owl - it’s so clever!! Also - amazing song :D
I feel like I’m watching an argument between a mother and son.
This is basically Athena disowning Odysseus.
0:46 "You'll keep your's and I'll keep mine" It starts on Athena until the and before swapping to Odysseus. Even during this massive fight, they're still each other's. Wolfy you've done it again. Hats off to you
2:08 hits so hard. That detail of the breathing really drives home the intensity of the line. Amazing.
I absolutely believe Odysseus was taking his life into his hands every time he opened his mouth to argue back. Dangerous words. This is awesome!
Yes, but at that point Athena really doesn't comprehend him as a human but as a doll she's programmed.
Oh gosh when Athena was vanishing at the end and the people he loved were crowding around them... so beautiful and heart breaking!!
I really like how Athena turns away from Odysseus at the end, and for the entirety of that ending you can’t see Athena’s face. I’d like to think that is because she’s trying to hide her hurt from their separation, kinda shows that she at least cared, even if she didn’t know it.
I love Athena's shock at his reminder that he saw her as a friend.
I'm absolutely in love with how you draw Odysseus!! 😍 It fits so perfectly with how I had him in my mind when I read Homer's Odyssey and the expression, everything, I love it!! I wish you keep making those for the rest of the musical 'cause I absolutely adore them!!!
The pain and almost-regret on Odysseus eyes at 02:58, and then the change to resignation at 03:10... oh my.
[ATHENA:]
You are reckless, sentimental at best
That's not a teaching of mine
You've grown soft, your dead friends can attest
[ODYSSEUS:]
Hey!
[ATHENA:]
Put your emotions aside
You're a warrior meant to lead the rest
I don't know where I went wrong
But I warned you, and you failed the test
So now I'm gone
This way, you'll know what your place is
This way, you can't cross the line
This way, when all is over you'll keep yours and I'll keep mine
This way, you won't disappoint me
This way, you won't waste my time
This way, I'll close the door
Consider this as my goodbye
[ODYSSEUS:]
That's just like you, why should I be surprised?
Selfish and prideful and vain
Unlike you, every time someone dies
I'm left to deal with the strain
What's a title that a goddess could lend if I'll never sleep at night?
I'll remind you I saw you as a friend
But now we're done
This way, you're out of my head now
This way, you won't plague my life
This way, when all is done, you're out of sight and out of mind
This way, you get what you wanted
This way, you can save your time
This way, you close the door and have your damn goodbye
[ATHENA:]
You're not looking for a mentor
I'm not looking for a friend
I mistook you for a general
What a waste of effort spent
[ODYSSEUS:]
At least I know what I'm fighting for
While you're fighting to be known
Since you claim you're so much wiser
Why's your life spent all alone?
You're alone
[ATHENA:]
One day, you'll hear what I'm saying
One day, you might understand
One day, but not today, for after all you're
[ENSEMBLE:]
Just a man
[ATHENA (ENSEMBLE):]
This day, you sever your own head
This day, you cut the line
This day, you lost it all
Consider this as my goodbye
(Ohh)
Consider this as my goodbye
(Ohh)
This is my goodbye
(Ohh)
Consider this as my goodbye
(Ohh)
This is my goodbye
Thank you! I couldn't understand the "what's a title that a goddess could lend" part of Odysseus's part.
I love how you draw this as an argument where theyre both disappointed in each other and hurt, and deliver digs that actually hurt... works so well with how I interpreted the song too
also i can't get over how much athena has to lean down in order to talk to odysseus at 0:33 💀
I think it really does show how different their levels ale
1:55 made me audibly gasp. you took one of my favourite verses in the entire musical and somehow made it even better - I don't think I'll be able to image anything other than Athena leaning over and whispering that line in his ear when listening to the song from now on
Edit: Just realised that shot is the thumbnail as well. Great choice!
2:31 AT RIGHT THIS MOMEMNT I REALIZED HER MOUTH WAS AN OWL'S MOUTH NOW THATS A COOL DESIGN CHOOSE
All those souls gently pulling Odysseus towards home, towards earthly responsibilities, away from Athena as the pinnacle moment, shows that how human he is. "Just a man" but so much more in being "just" mortal. I love your little details so much :')
At 3:08 when it did the screen flash my houses power went out for a second then came back on along with the screen. Honestly lucky tbh
2:20 I love how people pop up in the back, and to me it looks like people who may have lost their lives in/during war since 1) they look like spirits and 2) Athena is the Master of War
While I was watching this I recognized one of the ghosts as Polites which was so powerful
That part hits the hardest to me. The ghost are echoing one his darkest moments while Polites looks like he's holding the baby too.
2:55
To me, at least, it looks as though she could have been crying here.
I live for the Athena design. Distinctly inhuman and not just statuesque in stature the way it is used commonly but literally she looks like a statue. Has a lot of sass in her poses though when trashing Odysseus. Overall dope design and excellent animation.
Bruh that transition from your Odysseus animatic to My Goodbye was so satisfying. Also LOVE the circling of Athena around Odysseus at 1:50. Just lovely!
Everytime I watch this, the moment for “Just a man” with all the voices still gives me goosebumps
The best thing is when the people that you like and follow loves the same thing that you love and gave you THIS kind of art. Thank you this is AMAZING it shows how much you worked on it! And My goodbye (and the whole Epic the musical) is SO GOOD
I believe that Athena would be a lonely character, because she lives a immortal life with a strategic mindset in and out of battle. So pretty much she would keep friends and family at arms length, because she doesn't want to give a possibly of a future foe using any form of attachment against her. So when Odysseus called her out on it, it broke her facade and showed her emotion for a moment.
I honestly felt bad for Athena, just seeing the hurt showing even for a second
@@contractwolf6669 Honestly I don't feel sorry for her, with all the messed up thinks she done in Greek history. Athena turned one of her own followers into Medusa the Gorgon, because she catch the lady bring raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple, and punishment her for it, then later helped Perseus into killing Medusa. Another victim is Arachne the spider hybrid of Greek history who was originally a human but was turned by Athena, because of her silk weaving skills and pridefulness of said skill, which she definitely showed both after winning a weaving race against Athena, which definitely got to the goddess after her lost. So Athena transformed her into the spider hybrid that is known in Greek history. So yeah I don't feel sorry for her.
@@CrimsonCruz92the medusa thing depend on the myth you read, in some she transformed medusa like that to protect her from future grape by removing her beauty. And a remindeer medusa was never human she just was borned looking like a human. She was a gorgon who did not inherited her family looks.
I have no idea about wich version of Arachnid you have read, but that is way far then the story. A comen i that one is Arachnid said she could weave better then Athena. (saying you are better then a god/goddess at something they are good at is already stupied), athena shows up. They compete. The myth various on what Arachnid draw, but it ends the same with her k***ling herself and athena regreting her previous action turns her in to a spider so she can continue to weave.
@@CrimsonCruz92
Btw, that specific Medusa story came from Ovid, who’s not really a trusted source on Greek Mythology. For one he was a Roman, and he mostly used the gods as metaphors for the powerful elites he was enemies with, specifically the newly crowned Emperor Augustus. His whole thing was using the gods as a criticism of absolute power, but otherwise doesn’t really have a basis in what the average Hellenic worshiper would have believed in the same way Paradise Lost isn’t a hat Christians believe.
Your art is amazing! Its so realistic and dynamic, I love it!!!
"Selfish and prideful and vain" very good way to describe Athena
thank you for making it so grounded and focusing so much on their expressions
I love your character expressions and angles and your strong portrayal of contrast between Athena and Odysseus!
Athena with the god-like stature above humanity and the stoic emotions, and Odysseus being the smaller, human man who’s so emotionally complex. UGH so many emotions portrayed in 3 minutes.
Athena's subtle fist clench at 1:30 is all I needed to see today
Idk if I'm going crazy, but seeing Polites at 2:25 hurts so much AHHHH
HES HOLDING THE BABY
That’s dirty💀
@@Jester..-xm5cvHE WOULD HOLD THE BABY BUT IN THIS SITUATION WAAAAAAAAAA
My gosh, that's it, I'm in love with your channel. You're so good ! Your animations are so well thought out, beautiful and full of meanings ! I'm a fan of Epic and definitly a fan of yours now.

I like how Athena barely moves her mouth. Like she's speaking through both of their minds and never breaks her proper behavior until she gets upset. Man that's good 😁
i ADORE this Athena design. it's very simple and she also reminds me of a barrel owl
It’s exactly what I picture Athena to look like
I like the idea she was originally testing him to see if he would fight back against her leaving, cause she stayed around even after she said she was leaving and stayed listening to him talking back to her then when he crossed that line....that was when she knew there was no reason to stay
I love that little touch of Athena leaning in to call Odysseus a waste of effort spent, like it was an intentional effort to make it as painful as possible
Just wanted to say how i love the shift in Athena's expression from 2:12 to 2:15, like she's geniuniely hurt by what she's heard but then gets it together again...
and the way she tilts her head is so owl-like i can't even-
I love this so much! Athena’s design and the height difference is incredible! And all the people collapsing in on him??? IMMACULATE!
That expression of shock when he says he considered her a friend...perfection, also really sad
I like how you visually represent the difference between a God and a Human. One is an immortal all powerful but incomplete being, the other can't rival in strength or lifespan, but has the one thing a God can never have, and that is Humanity.
Love this point
it’s so sad that odysseus’s stupidest moment by giving a son of poseidon reason enough to curse him was also the action that caused him to lose favor with his patron goddess. if he had her blessing, he would’ve made it home real quick
0:05 5'4 me and my 6'6 boyfriend lol

Okay so I haven't seen this musical, and I want to preface this with that. I also like character analysis a bit and i wanted to do that. Uhh yeah, its just innacurate stuff im pointing out past this.
I've been watching this on repeat for like
...a while.
I love your Athena design, it’s so owl-like and the micro expressions are perfect.
Love how the story’s told this animation is beautiful
The thing that gets me is that...Athena isn't wrong. She's cold because she's right.
I love your Athena design! The owl-like features make her so distinctive!
