You can really tell how much Odysseus feels bad for Calypso, even though she's practically kept him prisoner in hopes he might feel the same way (which is pretty screwed up). He actually does seem to be trying to let her down gently (then again he might just be trying not to anger her cause she's an all power goddess and all). Anyway their story just proves you can't force romantic love nor are entitled to someone's, especially in the Odyssey when she tries to bribe Odysseus with immortality and he still chooses the possibility of being with Penelope again. Sorry Calypso he loves Penelope too much, he'd take her over immortality anyday.
Compared to what a lot of Greek gods were like, calypso is very easy to sympathize with. What she did was pretty awful, but most of the gods motives were super petty for their actions. I think desperation for companionship is a lot better than every time Zeus couldn’t keep it in his pants
@@gameb9oy oh I know, Calypso's action are far from the worst thing the Gods have done. And it is hard not to feel bad for her, but while her past and loneliness explain her actions they do not necessarily excuse them. Though props to her for letting Odysseus go (sort of... without a fight at least) I guess. And in a way she did care (arguments can be made about the love part. Because being love means knowing you're not entitled to someone else's and you can't to force it, in the end it's better to let them go because you want them to be happy) about Odysseus as she did keep him alive (albeit probably for her own benefit) and well I guess. I am trying to be optimistic here. But anyway, Calypso definitely is better than some gods (*cough* Zeus *cough*).

I think it’s less that she can’t comprehend it, more that she sees romantic love as the ultimate love and has never been given any sort of love at all. The fact that her first love is unrequited, even if there is platonic love, makes her feel inadequate. It makes her feel like she’ll never find love, and like she doesn’t deserve it (even if she knows he loves her.) (I relate to this song so badly. Yes I am venting.)

I wonder if there's anything behind the fact that Calypso's apologies are not good apologies. They're all saying I'm sorry if YOU reacted this way or I'm sorry if I was too much for YOU. Like the phrasing puts the blame on Odysseus for the issue at hand. Idk maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Personally, I don't exactly like how they tried to make calipso sympathetic. In the original story, Odessias kept rejecting her but she still slept with him every night, which just to be clear, means she kept graping him every night for seven years. I understand she is a goddess who lived in a world where indulging in this kind of behavior was not seen as a big deal, but there should be no expectation placed on her victim to forgive her or let her down gently. He is still a man who went through hell to get back to his wife and remained faithful to her, despite getting a vague prophecy about her finding another man from Tiresias mind you, meaning this type of intimacy is something sacred to him. Yet this woman completely ignored his wants and his pleading for her to stop. If it's honestly that hard to sympathize with the victim here just switch the genders. If a male god forced himself on a mortal woman for seven years because he "loved" her despite her telling him no and being married and trying for over a decade at this point to get back home to her husband and son, how would that look?
I mean, EPIC isnt a 1:1 retelling of The Odyssey. Jorge probably took that aspect out- This Calypso alluded to it but she probably tried to make him comfrotable and kept distance. Yeah yeah, acknowledge to source material and all that but like stated, EPIC isnt a 1:1 retelling.
@@-drxxms-dxlight yeah I get that, but rape with male victims and female rapists isn't really depicted or talked about in media. I mean, rape I get real isn't talked about much and if it is it's not really portrayed as it should be. But this musical already alludes to rape twice (zeus and antinous kinda umplying raping a woman in their songs) so it doesn't really shy away from that subject matter, so, why not also address what Odessias went through? That's what I don't get.
Its sad for both parties involved. She was casted away by Zeus to this island and cursed to where if ANYONE were to stumble upon it, she would fall madly in love with them. She literally loves him due to a curse which is so sad. Poor Odysseus just wants to get home and chooses Penelope over immortality and staying with Calypso.
She wasn't cursed. She fell in love with him due to the long isolation and Odysseus's overall quality. His looks, personality and charisma play it's part.

What is everyone saying here? Calypso rapes Odysseus for 7 YEARS. And people feel bad for her? With Circe, the consent is in question but with Calypso, it's non present.
Not every adaptation has Odysseus do anything with either. In Epic, during God Games, while trying to convince Hera, Athena makes the claim Odysseus, "Never once has he cheated on his wife". While SA wouldn't be considered cheating, ever, since it's not consensual, when taken in reference to the Gods, especially Hera who would regularly punish those who Zeus SAed, it's save to say the gods may view it differently (I don't agree with them, I can't stress this enough). I think it's safe to say in this adaptation, that didn't happen. She did keep him trapped on the island, and continued to pester him, but it's never shown she passed any boundary and Odysseus is stated to have valued her friendship enough to love her "but not in the way he wants her to."
The way she chose to express her love is definitely screwed up, but that’s what she thinks love is. She never had another way of knowing what love could be. She was her own teacher in everything so how else could she have known? In the end she’s just another confused casualty. (Despite that, I really wish we had more stories about her specifically)
I will never and I mean NEVER feel bad for her , ik what she's been through but same goes for Odysseus, feeling alone isn't an excuse for what she did to him , and i will hate her my whole life, if she doesn't have any haters know that I died, great art btw

Ikr, as far as I'm concerned there's no significant differences between this and those guys who lock women in their basement for years. I'm sure many of them are convinced they love their victims too. But with a male victim and female perpetrator people tend to downplay how bad her actions are.

I thought Calypso was a nymph but I feel so bad for her in this situation because Odysseus doesn’t feel the same way
@@iliketea1427She's only better than Zeus in the sense that she's only raped one person. That we know of.

It is also unlikely he would have made it out alive himself if he didn't go through with it, or in the case of the musical, if she didnt show him sympathy.
@@geekasauruswreks8789Odysseus was forced into sleeping with them on both occasions, at least in the version I've heard of. Circe made him choose between the lives of his men, and sleeping with her. It is also likley he would not have made it out alive himself if he did not sleep with her. In Calypso's case, Odysseus spent every day of his seven year stay crying on the beach, thinking of his wife. Calypso forced the intercourse between the two.

I think it’s less that she can’t comprehend it, more that she sees romantic love as the ultimate love and has never been given any sort of love at all. The fact that her first love is unrequited, even if there is platonic love, makes her feel inadequate. It makes her feel like she’ll never find love, and like she doesn’t deserve it (even if she knows he loves her.)

That would look like zeus probably.
I know this is a month old but Jorge probably removed that aspect of the story (Her graping Ody) like he did with Circe
@@cantthinkofaname5234 Because it's not the story it's trying to tell.
Its sad for both parties involved. She was casted away by Zeus to this island and cursed to where if ANYONE were to stumble upon it, she would fall madly in love with them. Pretty sure that's just the Percy Jackson interpretation.
She wasn't cursed. She fell in love with him due to the long isolation and Odysseus's overall quality. His looks, personality and charisma play it's part.
That’s only from Percy Jackson
The curse is a PJO original

Ok kids, we do not equate mind control to love. If someone says no and you do something against their will anyway or you make it so that have no choice but to do the thing they refused to do, then that is not love.
(Despite that, I really wish we had more stories about her specifically)
...why does this hurt?!
I will never and I mean NEVER feel bad for her , ik what she's been through but same goes for Odysseus, feeling alone isn't an excuse for what she did to him , and i will hate her my whole life, if she doesn't have any haters know that I died, great art btw

Odysseus was screaming and crying and breaking down over his trauma and being trapped there, and she was like "I love you" stfu that's not love, that's possession
Ikr, as far as I'm concerned there's no significant differences between this and those guys who lock women in their basement for years. I'm sure many of them are convinced they love their victims too. But with a male victim and female perpetrator people tend to downplay how bad her actions are.
That makes 4 of us, friend
Wasn't she kinda alone for a long time tho that she didn't even know what love was like and thought that odysseus was her blessing and hers to keep
Not that is an excuse but I just wish she was entitled for keeping him
@@lynthepanda it shouldn't take much to understand "no", "hell no", and "not till the end of time". I understand that she didn't live in a culture with a prominent concept of consent, but how fucked up in the head do you have to be to naturally just ignore a litany of clear and unambiguous "I don't want you, I love my wife, I would do anything in the world to return to her and I will never be yours" because he was fucking CLEAR about that
This is now my favorite animatic of this song.
It’s.. so beautiful and the way the flowers in the back glowing when the chorus sings it’s outstanding :’)
Oh my goodness!
I absolute adore this animatic!
It is so beautiful drawn, and the music that played, is just amazing.
I cannot not put into words how much I love this!
Keep up doing the amazing work :)
A Few centuries later she'll fall in love with a Pirate that will give her his heart. His Name, Davy Jones.
That's my headcanon too.
As a hopeless romantic. This song breaks me.
song was so beautiful and hit sooo close to home I started literally sobbing. My sister woke up and looked at me like I'm crazy
That last "what do I do with this love for you?" hurts a lot considering that she unalives herself after he leaves.
2:04 something about this is so heartbreaking to me
Please give her a happy ending! Rewrite history, I dont care, just give her someone who can love her back!!
😭🙏
Have you heard of Precy Jackson
Came straight from Love in Paradise. Calypso there exists no universe in which I'm not a hater.
I can't stop watching this it's so beautiful 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
Uh! What is the difference between a guilt trip and being honest! I cant tell which she is doing!.
Amazing animatic, but is anyone else just making calypso an automatic op cuz they love penelope sm? Or is it just me
They're confusing Epic Calypso with other versions of her. And thinking even though Jorge has changed a million other things to his version of the story, he definitely intended on Calypso to be a sexually assaulting monster to Odysseus
i love how u made her look the same as her VA, the hair looks great ❤
Did calypso become heartless towards Davy jones becuz her heart belonged 2 a married man???....
Because she saw story repeat. She saw a man who wanted equality in the relationship, and she refuses to give it to him, because "It's her nature.".
Hey, In Greece, Gods and Goddesses actually cry Gold. 😉
Waitttttt I actually hit 100k on a video?? Never thought I'd ever have a video with this many views. Words can't describe my gratitude, but thanks so much y'all
I hate you calypso but you're too real for this.
Your design for Calypso is absolutely adorable and this animatic is just...so sad. Lovely job!
This is stunning!! The art and music are so lovely, oml
It’s sad because in the myths she never does find love
Then the next song hermes is just "hahahahahahaha dangerous"
I'd be trapped with Calypso on that island if I had the choice to. I feel so bad for her
