Right out of the gate I feel like I stumbled into an awkward internal family argument that I had to slowly back out of the room from and pretend I didn't catch any of it.

Sometimes it's not clean, most times it's not pretty, but at the end you witness the full circle, and can see clearly that you're all on the same page. Family.

Hey Burt, I'm just like you in that I feel things very intensely, I'm empathetic to the people around me and it effects who I am. It's taken me a long time to learn how to use that to my advantage but it also still brings me down at some points too. I've had to learn that reality is the individual brain's perception of what's going on around it, it's ok for other people to think differently than me, and if their opinions are too intense for me it's ok for me to disengage and not continue with the topic of conversation and walk away with my opinion in tact.

We arent built for moderation as a species. You have to exercise moderation to be healthy, some people find it easier to do than others. Youre not broken, you just have some work to do, be patient with yourselves. Kids need to be taught moderation and whats healthy, you guys are doing exactly what every other household is supposed to be doing....Including teaching your children how to voice their opinions or qualms intelligently and articulately by including them into the conversation when they are mature enough to learn.
The roles are reversed in my family, Im more the practical one, my wife is 100% the opposite (just like bert). It is a legit godsend as we cover each others asses without even knowing we did so. It took me every bit of a decade to realize that and come to terms with it.

I'd like to see Leanne question her thought process a little more. She enters every argument with almost complete certainty and doesn't contemplate the alternative.
For example, Ila getting her learner's permit. It's a once in a life time event. Bert sees the fun side in going around the block, Leanne sees the responsible side.
If you're on your death bed, which memory are you more likely to remember?
Balance is important, so consider both when making your decision.

oh man, I would have loved to be in this podcast when bert started talking about 5th grade advice and Leanne starts trying to tell bert about adding value to statements, I feel like this may be the 1 thing she doesn't get about people with super intense feelings and growing up with those. How simple statements are judgements to people that feel like bert and I do, which is why pointing out negative behavior even in a kind, reserved, helpful loving manner is still a stab to our heart and self worth and can send us spiraling even when well intentioned AND we have encouraged you to do it, because you are in our inner circle of the 1-3 people we trust with everything. which sounds like BS because we also seem like we tell everybody everything, but in reality we tell everybody 90% which makes us seem really open and honest about who we are, and then our inner circle gets 95% which seems to you like everything but there is that extra 5% that NO ONE would ever get because it would destroy us. Hence slim fast crying in the shower (which btw there is like 15 layers to that not 5 like you think you know and 3 that the general public gets)

Don’t you think the fact that she said that and you felt the way you felt and voiced what you felt was therapeutically good for you? If somebody saying it to you makes you feel a certain way and you’re still able to have the self awareness to leave the comment that you did means it was something that was worth saying, and helpful in growing up and getting past/understanding these childhood traumas. And they are traumas. Sometimes you need to hear things that upset you enough times to articulate just how and why you feel something than holing it away

@@simplycy919 ok we are deep here, ya I totally get that but i still see a disconnect, while Leanna probably understands bert better than anyone ever will, and I'm sure he knows this, I was simply stating there is still that area where he shuts down like the high school advice part and then played it off with comedy. While everything is great and healthy, there is another level there where even deeper understanding could occur... and of course the only reason I saw it is because I'm my own mess and shade everything I see through my own pain and experiences, that is what we all do

Your podcast has spoken to me so much! I am like Bert in the fashion that everything is so extreme to me... the worst thing for me is that not everyone understands my sense of view... my wife is understanding me more and more but it is hard at times... she is so strong and understanding... Bert, what advice would you give someone who feels as intense as you do, especially during hard times... I love the feeling of happiness, but when things are negative, it hits me hard!

1:07:00 This reminds me of myself and really caring about what people think, like just wanting to be a face in the crowd and then her sister comes along and shines a big spotlight on her and is essentially like "look over here everyone". Almost like embarrassing or social anxiety if that makes sense

Someone mentioned in the comments that they thought Ila would be like Honey Boo Boo with the way that Bert talked about her. Burt does say some things about his daughter, jokingly but he isn't being serious. You can tell he loves both of his daughters very much. Ila is the antithesis of Honey Boo Boo. She's very smart. Burt and Ila are alot alike.

25:00 good lord Ila is like me when I was a teenager. I have pretty bad ocd and anxiety and I would think up all these hypothetical scenarios of what would happen to me or people around me as an adult and I would spiral into depression and have panic attacks. I would think similar things about what if I need to go to the hospital and I can’t drive yet? What if my mom calls me but when I pick up it’s a police officer on the other end saying she died in a car accident. I used to think all kinds of crazy stuff like that. Now I’m 26 and I do drive and I have a job and stuff. But I just couldn’t fathom that at her age.
Omg and Bert mentioning Barns and Noble. So when I was looking for a job for the first time, I literally went to a mall and walked up and down and entered every store and spoke to every manager about working there. And the first store I went into was Barnes and Noble. I knew they were hiring and I said that I had already sent in my online application. And the manager was like, okay I’ll give you an interview right now! And I was HORRIFIED. I was so scared and I could just feel my face heat up. I think i did okay. But they never followed up with me. But it was so scary. But I survived.

Youngans note: No matter what, the key to relationships is being able to talk about it. You have to be able to talk about things, EVERYTHING else matters less. Read this again until you understand it.
