No one ever talks about Donald's singing but he is so unique and special it's real soul.
WHAT? No one ever talks about it? No, that is crazytalk. It is one of the most talked about voices of the time. Stop going to the bingo games and wondering why they aren't talking about him.
It's that New Jersey Accent that makes the singing voice.
When a Steely Dan producer asked in an interview how Donald sang into the rhythm back in the 70's
he said :"He punched in"
means he kept singing until the track was perfect.
By the tune and the rhythm together.
2:54. Just to hear Michael sing the words "foreign movie" in that really odd-interval harmony, and keep it perfectly on pitch. Always makes my day.
He did it just as well as the original studio recording, very impressive.
Now imagine him doing it 100 times at once and you have the record 😛 and I doubt I'm exaggerating, from what I saw the mini-documentary on the making of "Aja" the album./
Michael and that lovable stuffy tenorish voice. Hard to explain....
@@spindriftdrinker And did all the parts alone in the studio.... one of my favorites
Michael's singing that part in time, Fagen is the one singing odd time.
Amazing how Steely Dan material still sounds fresh all these decades later. Still remember when Aja first came out. Groundbreaking music.
Jon Heringtgon - honoring Jay Graydon while putting his personal touch on it. What a monster in every way! Hard to believe what I just heard. Pretty close to perfection.
Wow Jon Herington is recreating that nostalgic tone perfectly.
I bussed tables in a restaurant that had a jukebox back in the 70’s and I used to play this song over and over…. Stevie love!! ❤
They are executing time change in a song live!!! This is insane!!
This is the EPITOME of Musical Art! At its FINEST! Wow…..I LOVE IT!!!!
The band is on point with every note and sound .
I cannot believe I have just stumbled onto this! This is the “Classical” music our kids and grandkids should be embracing and studying. The caliber of all of the musicianship is worth the price of a ticket. I would like to personally thank the genius who put this touring act together.
There are definitely lots of younger fans out there. I'm 27, but I know of younger people than me who are heavily into this era of music.
Great music lasts forever. It might not stay in the top 100 forever, but It will always have a legacy that far outpaces the generic stuff we've been fed for a long time now.
40 something years later, Michael McDonalds voice still gives me goosebumps........
Greatness at work...
This song never gets old.
No Steely Dan song gets old
@@garyolshan4177 dirty work does
Old? It just doesn't, relevancy??? It's just really good.
Clean, original, unique.
LOVE THIS SONG AND MUSIC
Man, Donald Fagen sounds simply brilliant in his old age.
He does sound good but he is using auto tune in this performance
@@LoJahn May I pls ask how does one know that?
@@karenr.sternberg1920You can hear it. It’s the immediate jumps between notes and somewhat synthy/ compressed sounds.
ROCK GOES TO COLLEGE....Turned on to Steely Dan at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor...GO BLUES!
That guitarists tone was just incredible!
He's fab!
His name?
That solo paid some homage to the original solo yet was also pretty different - this is exactly the balance that one could hope for.
@@spindriftdrinker A microscopic amount of homage. More than his riffing that anything else.
I learned Jay Graydon's solo in Peg note for note when it came out, and performed it live many times. It is harder than it sounds. This guy was allowed to riff his own solo and his tone and choices were far from the masterpiece Jay Graydon laid down on the original.
He did the same to Larry Carlton's masterpiece in Third World Man.
How do you not love Fagen and McDonald! Brilliant and beautiful!!
Lord, almighty. Mr Mc Donald in da house with Mr F, Boz and team
It makes me sad that these amazing musicians are getting older. But so am I, I grew up listening to these guys, U feel blessed 😊
Make sure you do "What a beautiful world this would be". Keep coming back.
Out of this world live music…follow that…anybody…
the drumming is just spot on
Shannon Forrest - top musician!
"Peg" remains timeless; still pulling heartstrings.
Magical… I’ve always been obsessed with this song then to hear it live and it sounds so amazingly the same and different in the best way imaginable almost better…no words
This is a master class in musicianship take heed young ones this is how it is really done
What a masterpiece, it really works .
IT'S YOUR FAVORITE FOREIGN MOVIE never gets old!!!!!!!!
This is probably the ONLY group that can do Steely Dan songs, and no one will complain about it!
That scratches me right where I itch.
Donald Fagen is a perfectionist doing music to perfection!
This song holds its own all these years! fan-damn-tastic!!
Goosebumps EVERYTIME like the first time I heard PEG
His Majesty The King of BOOMERS - DONALD FAGEN!
This is so tight! Nothing hurried, so clean, oh and folks this is live, no editing no auto tune! I hope some kids are watching this, cuz someone has to keep this going!!!
i feel like there's a just a little autotune on Donald's voice though
@@_gigi_1143 there's definitely auto tune on his voice, you can here it on the extended notes
WHAT HE SAID…!
Haha autotune. Mm talking about what a perfectiist df was on original
It's called real musicians
One of the rare occasions the background vocals add as much to the song as the lead vocals. Michael McDonald is a bad man!
SOUND OF 70'S...J'ADORE...THANK YOU,MISTERS....
I was wondering why this sounds so good: it’s due to great performances, mixing and the fact that Mike McDonald and Donald Fagen nailed the original recording. Well done, Gentlemen.
Couldn’t be the excellent musicianship of this hand-picked and incredibly good arranging of Donald Fagen.
Nah. Not that! No never!!!
@@daviddorrell5819 Agreed. After all, it is Fagen's song. Of course he's going to nail it.
Great musicians = Great Music! Lol. Simple but true.
Agreed. This is my favorite live version of Peg EVER. It is hard to believe that a live version could be as good as the studio recording which was so heavily produced and crafted to perfection.
Mm said df was perfectionist on how he sang 'peg'.
Donald Fagen is the GOAT
Spectacular, truly innovative. It sounds like a sound track.
I am 73 years old and I have seen "Monet" 10-15 times with Boz Scaggs,...seeing her singing with Michael McDonald is fantastic...LOVE IT !!!
In my heaven....here is my band.
Favorite song of 1978 by steely dan🎉
As a singer..
Man would I like to sing with these dudes.
Jesus Christ, even when Michael McDonald is just singing the third harmony part he still ends up being the lead singer.
Don’t recall seeing Jesus in this group so, according to the Bible, you’re taking the Lord’s name in vain! If that means nothing to you now, I can promise you on the authority of the Word of God, that one day when you’re giving an account of your actions here on Earth, you will!
Every time I hear this song I think of when it first came out and hearing it on KFRC in San Francisco. Dr. Don Rose would yell, "P-e-e-e-e-e-e-g," whenever he'd play this song.
i am a NYC lifer......... heard this song when it was released on WNEW-FM 102.7................
Oh my gosh , I remember the same thing about kfrc and Dr Don Rose . DJ voice of my youth !
Peg is one of the greatest sounds to ever come out of my sound systems
Awesome to see MM singing on this, had to be surreal for him since he sang all the backup parts on the original
Mike’s voice really adds that special ingredient singing the lower backing with the girls here. They sound great. Digging the guitar work in all of these. Wonderful ad libs. As usual, John is perfect. Cheers.
iT JUST MESSES ME UP TO HEAR THIS GREAT MUSIC PULLED OFF WITHOUT A GLITCH...IF I COULD TIME WARP I'D GET THE HELL OUT OF 2022 AND SIT IN THE STUDIO DURING THE MAKING OF PEG FOREVER. STEELY HAS CEMENTED THEMSELVES INTO THE WORLD MUSIC SMITHSONIAN HALL OF FLAWLESS MUSIC.
I'm with you, man
Fagen's voice is so not perfect, but perfect for this astonishing music
Thank God his manager encourage him to sing (Gary Kantz? or something like that? Sic?) Great gig. So much great music + astute cultural observations. Genius!
Still so very distinct though. (I used to have a near perfect voice- not so much anymore I’ve lost a lot of range, but I can still sing along with SD. It’s an injury that’s taking years to heal- but it’ll never be what it was and that’s fine!)
It seems just as good as the original 1977 recording.
@@spindriftdrinker Yeah, these people are nuts. He sounds a teeny bit aged but still 8/10 to his original track.
He honestly has some of the best pitch I’ve ever heard though. Like auto tune level.
Man what amazing musicians!
How can you not love Donald Fagen.
They are having a blast! Another reason it sounds great ! Fresh !
Walt and Don really painted themselves into a corner with this one because no live performance can recreate what we got on that record.
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING……
EVERY ONE OF THOSE MUSICIANS ( Out outside of the originals, )
WERE PROBABLY EXCITED TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS SONG !
THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE SONG FROM STEELY DAN SINCE IT CAME OUT !
1977 I was 8 years old ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is three of my favorites ! I just found out about it and ordered it to watch with my wife on New Years Eve. We have seen them all separately live . But will be a good way to kick off the evening!
The absolute dogs bollocks,it don’t get much better than this,I’m always coming back,I can’t help myself🙃
I remember hearing this song in the late 70s being too young to know who were the musicians and singers. Unlike any other song I'd heard before, there was one voice, in the background, that stood out and got my attention like never before. "Peeeeeg!" Who was that??? It's such a pleasure to see this group perform the song and to see Michael McDonald as that voice.
Same here.
Mr McDonald is my favorite male singer hands down.👍🏾
What an awesome show. Never knew that these 3 legends had gotten together and played their hits. Definitely made my week.
That guitarist played on the Two Against the Nature Concert too
Jon Herrington is an incredible guitarist
Virtuoso!!
Music for all the generation . 👏👏👏👏👏
Went to see Steely Dan 2 years before this gig and they were superb. Everyone did their job beautifully and the sound mix was pristine. Bravo.
I've seen them like 4 times. I always said "polished, pristine, and professional performance".
Indeed, a treat. Every. Single. Time. 5x
That great sound comes from Every Musician perfecting his or her craft to produce the best rendition of that song as possible...GREAT band...The guitar solos were right on, every note...Thanks for the post...
Jon Herington on lead guitar… brilliant version of the legendary solo by Jay Graydon
The Drummer ! perfect.
All of Steely Dan's drummers are.
Nothing will beat the original Donalds voice isn't as good as it was but it's still a good job you have to remember of course each recording is a moment in time in the studio all you can do is appreciate how good it was at the time
I love all 3 of these guys. Gotta be honest though, I'd rather hear Donald, than see him. 😁❤️
This is ridiculous. How do they do it? Live…..masterstroke
Love your all!!!!
This gorgeous music fucking swings
Ya mon
Brings back memories
Love hearing tight professional artists play
Nunca me sentire solo.....escuchando a Peg..gracias Donald Fagen...eres maravilloso
❤wow. Never heard anyone take on the great Isley Bros phenomenon song, “who’s that lady”, but thee guys do it justice.what a crew. Some great performances here. Get down with it. Boz Scaggs, Donald Fagan, Michael McDonald, and more.
This got me vibing
Oh my gosh I love Don, he makes that Hohner Melodica seem so cool ❤
Feel good music
Top notch, professionalism at its finest
As successful and popular MM is, he is a phenomenal background singer , his voice and range are so good
One word: AWESOME! ❤
Forrest is PHENOMENAL!
endless love........................
Donald you are the best
donald comes out with the melodia, i'm like, oh, that's the instrument making that noise
The melodica
Harmonies.
A classic
I saw those blue mini keys Fagen is holding at the dollar store!
Plastic organ
A favourite - well done Don and Michael for keeping on when the voices have gone.
This guitar player is beyond amazing
Jon Herington
Everything here is spot on, but that bass... is so badass :)
Sounds like Jon listened to how Drew Zingg played at the end. Real good!
Wicked ❤❤❤❤
Absolutely!
This band is really amazing, i saw Steely Dan in the 80´s but these guys are far better
Love it ❤
Awesome! Keep them coming!
Some goddam line up !
Tight.
This band is better than I remembered. Great song and video, thanks man......
