I was already thinking about the issue that natural wood's density varies a lot (not like steel) so it isn't sufficient to make it round on the lathe when i noticed starting at 9:02 that the unbalanced issue with the wooden wheel is obviously worse than expected. Guess you observed that already?
+Mirko Mueller Yeah, not sure how is the density issue and how much is the shaft. The wood was carefully selected for consistency (for a different project) so it should be fairly uniform, for wood at least.
In the video you were holding and releasing it and it immediately started spinning back and forth that intense that shows that it is pretty much unbalanced.
Scott, The reason you were having issues with funny readings is because the data in the register gets reset (and another sample taken) when you read ADCH. I don't know what AVR you have but I'm doing some work with an ATCAN90, and this feature/bug is covered on page 290 last two paragraphs of the chip's datasheet.
Hey Scott, Do you change anything with the audio tracks on your videos? For some reason, the past 2 videos of yours that I have watched I can't hear a thing. (But I get audio as normal with all other subscriptions)
+Zach Benedict Every now and then there are bugs in the flash/html5 player. Check if you have all up to date. Give the video a try again after it's processed by youtube and there's more quality options available (the resolution option also gives you a different audio file)
+cottenmouthsnake I think it's one of the small Molex connectors, I picked up one but haven't tried it yet. The datasheet does not specify, which is annoying.
2am and i can't stop watching your Videos...
just too fascinating!

Very nice. The absolute encoder what model is that? And how does it work?
+Soren Andersen It's magnetic, the magnet press-fits on a 6 mm shaft and then the housing sits around it. Model aeat-6012-a06
Thanks

+Zach Benedict Not that I'm aware of. I had an audio issue a few weeks ago but haven't really changed anything once that was fixed.

10:00 - That wooden flywheel is not balanced!
what is the encoder you are using?
+cottenmouthsnake aeat-6012-a06
Did you ever find what kind of connector its supped to use? the datasheet does say
+cottenmouthsnake I think it's one of the small Molex connectors, I picked up one but haven't tried it yet. The datasheet does not specify, which is annoying.
+Scott Rumschlag How did you export the data to the excel sheet?
cottenmouthsnake Copy and paste, it's slow but flexible and doesn't require an extra program.
Get you some lipos, they can put out even more power than that supply can.
FUN!
shrapnel catchers would do better in front of those hard, deflective blocks.
+Adam R Yeah, I have some sandbags left over from truck ballast, they would be much better for future.
Build a magnetic levitation flywheel
