    I think the rubber stays because one of the main markets of the pegasus is high schoolers training for cross country. That extra grip helps a lot of dirt or grass vs the smooth bottom on the epic react

      Agreed that it makes it a much more versatile shoe. I have no issue running trails in my pegs and find the outsole probably better than a couple of versions of the Peg Trail for the task.

    This is the best looking peg 39 colourway I have seen. Certainly nailed the use case here. Softer shoes out there but a good warrior of the mid point pace. 👊

    Thanks for the review.I’ve run in the Pegs 36-38 for the past three years and have been happy. Some of the criticisms you note are probably not relevant to the target market for this shoe, namely, people who go out for a 30-40 minute run at a casual pace 3-4 times a week. The Pegs have the added benefit that you don’t look like a stupid clown if you wear them casually. Also, I like that they remain responsive. I also like having an outsole. I usually can’t get any more than about 75 miles out of a pair of Hokas before uneven wear on the sole renders them useless. By contrast, I can usually get about 400 miles out of one pair of Pegs.Never mind that Hokas do not function well as a cross-over casual shoe. I appreciate your criticisms of the line. It’s also nice to know what features I may be missing. But these issues aren’t of a lot of relevance to those of us who run about 20-30 miles/week for general fitness. Also, I like that it provides differentiated features in the market. Everyone else just seems to be making some knock-off of the Hoka trend of making me feel like I’m running on a foam pillow.

    • @JasonMolter
      @JasonMolter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, you really nailed how I would think about this as well. I had a good summer running in Peg last year, then this past August switched to a Hoka Mach 5, which I liked but the outsole wore down quickly, and they're not as good as a "retired running shoe" for walking around purposes like the Pegs are. Thanks for confirming, and I'm looking to get a new pair of Peg 39 now.

    I think you are alluding to, and I would agree that the Peg feels like old tech. I personally think they are saving all the bells and whistles, maybe zoomx with carrier, for the 40th edition. I'm holding off until 40. Noosa Tri 14, 1080v12, upcoming rebel v3 and novablast 3 are too good. Can't compete right now. And that's coming from a Nike guy.

      You're delusional, the "cheapitude" from Nike won't allow them to produce your fantasy peg 40. Why you think zoomx invincible cost 200 dollars? There isn't infinite resources and materials to make that possible. And why would nike make a 130 dollar shoe with zoomx, when its already charging 200 dollars and more for it. Here's a perspective for you Asics offers military discount of 60% while nike an American made company only offers 10% discount for serving members. How is it a Japanese company has more patriotism than an American one? Cause Nike is cheap and cheap companies who only care about profits. You'll never see a full length zoomx pegasus 40.

    More padding in the tongue is always better for me than a minimalist tongue because when I lace up the pressure from the laces tends to hurt the tops of my feet. I want my running shoes to be laced tightly, but whenever I lace them tight, the pressure on the top of my feet can cause pain, so a thicker tongue is better.
    Also, as a former cross country runner, lots of trail and cross country runners train in Pegasus, so outsole traction is necessary. Nike knows the shoe is worn by these runners, so I don't think they're planning to get rid of the complete outsole any time soon. Not everything is tailored specifically for road runners, after all.

    I agree. React is such a durable foam that requires little protection. I have my Infinity Run v1 thin outsole rubber gone in the heel area on both shoes but exposed React foam held better than the blown rubber. I still have the shoe for walking after 450 miles. I ran the last 100 miles of that with the exposed React foam. However, I think Pegasus will retain the rubber outsole. A lot of people are using Pegasus shoe for light trails and dirt roads. It also works as a pretty good XC shoe on grass.
    One thing to note for Vomero: The Zoom Air pod is embedded in ZoomX which in turn is wrapped by SR02 foam to protect fragile ZoomX. During the video, there was an impression that SR02 is the main foam of the shoe.

    I really agree with you, it's keeping a very very same trajectory, despite advances in other shoes. Some people may like this benchmark, but personally, knowing there are softer shoes, I've actually moved to the Invincible as my sole usage trainer. It suits me for my pace and weight. I'd like a Pegasus if it was a bit softer and then I'd use it for 5km/10km runs for the comfort and responsiveness, a bit like how the Vomero was around iteration 10/11/12.
    Pegasus outside is always very versatile, decent in the wet (unlike the Invincible) and has a multitude of usage, but I agree with you it often feels somewhat dead/hard when it doesn't need to.

    Once again I can thank -- or blame -- you for at least four pairs of running shoes since 2020 when I resumed running after a 30+ year I-hate-us. And your reviews of three of the four shoes I bought after your reviews -- Adidas Solar Boost and SL20 (original version) and, as of this week, the Pegasus 39 -- were spot on matches with my experience.
    I walked to Academy this week to buy some heavily discounted Saucony Endorphin Speed 1, but they were out. So I got the recently discounted Pegasus 39. I wore 'em home, intending only to walk, but ended up jogging 2 miles home -- wearing baggy khakis, sweaty poly-blend button down shirt and half-full backpack -- changing into proper shorts and t-shirt and went back out for another 3 or so miles. The air pocket in the Peg 39 heel suits my heel striking style, probably better than the Endorphin Speed springy plate would have.
    I'd only disagree about eliminating the outsole. I tend to wear shoes for hundreds of miles until the outsole is worn through (usually at the heels) and so far the midsoles haven't felt like they failed. Boost seems to last forever without losing its boostiness. Ditto, Under Armour Hovr midsoles -- I've worn through the outsole heels on one pair of Hovr Sonic 2 after about 600 miles, but the midsole still feels responsive. But I doubt the SL20 will last that long. The Lightstrike on the SL20 felt like cork until after a 25 mile break-in. It's still good at 180 miles, but the Lightstrike feels softer with every run, so it'll probably break down too much after 300 miles.
    The outsole tread on the Peg 39 also suits my mixed terrain of pavement, slippery puddles, grass and gravel. Most of my other shoes are too slick on puddles or wet grass.
    The only shoe that hasn't suited me quite so well for running was the first Atreyu base model, but only because my feet are narrow and the Atreyu is the widest fitting shoe I've bought. And I needed to trim the insole to reduce the bulge that irritated the lateral/cuboid area. But after 100 miles of running it's become my favorite casual shoe, usually worn without socks. Easily the softest, most comfy insides, free of stuff that rubs the skin raw or snags the bare toenails. And a good example of why running shoes don't always need a substantial heel counter.

    Great review. I don't mind the full rubber coverage on the Pegasus models (or Winflo). To me, it's just part of the design. I think it also lends to the overall durability of the shoe. I do appreciate that you are one of the few shoe reviewers that don't whine about React being outdated. Anyway, several colors of the Pegasus 39 can be had for under 70.00 right now on Nike's online store, thanks to the Black Friday sale. At that price point, it's a heck of a bargain.

    I have the 38's and the front air zoom pocket really does push up on the ball of the foot. Feels a bit weird just walking. Running is fine though. They weren't as pronounced on my Peg 37's. I tried the 39's in the Nike store and they felt better. I got the 39's for my dad when they became available since I'm the "runner" in the family. I was debating on that vs the Saucony Guide 15 or Asics Gel Nimbus. I have more experience in Nike shoes and they aren't niche running shoes, so I went with the 39's. It really is the "do it all" shoe.

    I think the Peg line is for people who will only have one running shoe for all their running session, be it on gravel or a light trail run, hence the outsole rubber will forever exist in the peg line. It adds versatility and durability as a workhorse shoe imho.

    Kofuzi you’re unintentionally spot on about react getting dense. nightwing2303 does an excellent job explaining how the zoom bags are implemented so in this set up with zoom in the heel it feels softer because when zoom bags are laid into their cut outs they fit with extra room so the bag can expand. However in this setup both the react and the zoom compress at the same time. What that means is by the time that the react by itself would cave Under body weight before bounding back into shape the zoom bag already has so you get a 1-2 punch of spring back in the heel

    Interesting. For me, the forefoot air pod in the 39's is clearly felt and too intrusive - like it's pushing my foot back, not forward. They are extremely comfortable shoes for walking but this makes them almost annoying when running.

    I have two pairs with around 150km on them and I’ve found them really flattening out in the midsole and I’m beginning to get niggles i didn’t before. I lift and run, so I’m not very light admittedly, but I usually get 300+ Km from a shoe.

    I have the Pegasus 39 FlyEase with around 50 miles so far and I'm loving it overall. Great shoe.
    But besides new Pegasus have lost a lot of weight it is not as bouncy and nimble as the old Pegasus 36 but it's better then the others.
    Nike needs a new foam for the Pegasus line because besides the great durability the React has no bounce as most other foams from the competition . At this time I can run faster with great agility and with more confort in my Asics Gel-Nimbus 24 that like 20 grams ( half an ounce ?) heavier then the Peg.

    Hmm, very interesting! It seems like most of the changes doesn’t take away too much from that overall Pegasus feel, which is to be expected. • @Silverwood085
    @Silverwood085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I hope because I am really bummed on the 38's upper was bad, I had heel lift and the upper was very tight on only the right shoe, plus the lacing kept undoing and it felt heavy on foot, I miss my 34 - blew my 36,s bubble so i dunno about heel bubble coming back (in 36 it extended the whole shoe i think)

    Pegasus 39 vs Velocity Nitro 2, which is better? I have Nitro 2 and I love this shoe for daily trainer and 10K+ run but not for fast running. Nitro 2 not too bouncy, soft enough with natural footsteps. More comfortable run than My v1

      I would get the Peg 39. Where I'm from (Southeast Asia), it's cheaper (already on discount) and easier to find than the Puma Velocity Nitro 2.
      In terms of performance, the Peg 39 has that signature Pegasus durability, it's much lighter than the 37 and 38, and while Puma's Nitro foam is better than React foam, Nike definitely utilized React better this time.

    Yes, the Peg 39 is probably not the best choice for a recovery run. I get the nagging feeling there is a minimum speed after which the ride works for me (and a maximum too). Perhaps something softer with a bit more cushioning could do the trick. What other options would you recommend for recovery days?
