Ko kinda brought up something that I think isn’t talked about much, for a new runner trying out the sport, your first shoe can really determine wether or not you enjoy the sport. It’s great that new runners have access to reviews and channels like this. Preciate the realness in this video Ko!!
I think the problem is in the shape of your feet. I ran 1 hr and 15 min. in the 40’s and my feet felt marvelous. These are one of the best daily trainers I ever owned.
Agreed. I’ve got the Pegasus Mid GTX trail version and they’re the best and most comfy trainers I’ve ever owned. So good in fact that I bought a second pair last month, and I’m about to buy a pair of custom 40’s for the warmer weather today ❤
I'm a HS cross country runner who is also a shoe nerd I know a lot of people that love the pegs and Nike in general, but now that you mention pains with these, I realize that a lot of my team who run in these also complain about the same thing after our long runs. I personally find Nike running shoes really tight and they get worn out pretty quickly, so I stick to other brands (nb rebel v3 ftw) but I also have a few friends that love the vaporfly's. Seems like a pretty hit-or-miss running brand to me
I just picked up my first pair of rebels because I’m upping mileage this summer and needed a 2nd pair of shoes. Before I just used Cliftons for everything
The Pegasus 40 feels to me like what maybe a Toyota Hilux is for cars. Yes, probably old tech in new colorways. But super reliable in all conditions, I feel like they withstand a lot of harsh treatment, and they are an unopinionated, okay choice for every kind of workout, at least for me. Even distances above 15-20k are unproblematic in terms of comfort. It's the perfect "Don't know what the day will bring"-shoe. And prices also fluctuate a lot, definitely a good buy at a discount.
Haven’t been back to watch a video in some time. Due to not running. But I’m glad to see the channel is still growing and you’re still doing your subscriber count. Been subbed since you were at less than 30k and still going
i think you really need to review the default colour release as "i.D/by you" versions can have a totally different feeling fit(as you got speed laces so that would make the tongue feel diff from base laces) and you pick the mini waffle rubber grip-outsole twice now, and if i remember right that is aimed for uniform track surfaces as it is aimed for track daily trainer as ive seen it sent out to those youngsters on the track to save their elite shoes for raceday, so the default outsole is much better for varied surfaces and mini trail and arguable more stable as the thicker rubber strips helps... but ALSO i totally agree that the peg39/40 is a step back from the 37/38, only the heel feels a bit more stable :(
Agreed. Sad time for me. I put 400+ miles in my Peg 36’s, including my first marathon. I’ve liked each version a little less since then. I have a pair of 39’s that I don’t think will see 200. I did just order a pair of Adidas SLs and a Takumi Sen 9 based off your recommendations. Started a TH-cam channel too. You’re quite the influencer Ko!
Maybe it's the fact that I'm still in my 20s, but I love the Pegasus line. My first Peg was the 37, and I went through 3 of those before I tried other brands to see what they had to offer. Endorphin Speed 2, NB 1080 v11, Rincon 3, Clifton 8, Mach 4, Novablast 3... Then the Pegasus 39 went on sale and I'm currently on my third pair of those. IDK what it is but it just works for me. Never bottoms, amazing durability, good traction / no slipping, not soft but not firm either, perfect to pick up the pace in during strides and easier workouts. Very much a Goldilocks type of ride for me. Definitely looking forward to trying the 40, but I'm also tempted by the Adizero SL and the Puma Deviate Nitro 2. Incidentally, my current shoe rotation and the shoe rotation I used to train for Boston is the same one that you recommend. IDK what that says about me and other runners Pegasus fans lol. Maybe we're just predictable and we like a good sale.
I always like those peg 37s with the navy blue upper with the neon green swoosh on them. And they had that front zoom unit that would like propel you forward.
I agree with this, Ive been running in the Pegs since the 32, and I loved the 35, tied with the OG Peg Turbo for 2nd fav shoe ever, beaten only by the OG Zoom Fly. the 36 and 37 were also good but i do seem to find that I want a different shoe, something softer and with more support like the infitity reacts for daily runs and something more snappy like the OG Zoom Fly or Endorphin Speed 1 on workout days. Just us growing out of our shoes.
Peg 35 was my first "serious" running shoe and entry point to this channel. I still have a red pair of 35s for casual wear, which is where the Peg line will always have a place for me. 40s are the best in years, but better daily trainers out there for sure.
I heard somebody say that the 40s are good for running but will hurt your feet when walking… Which to me is an absurd thing to say but I’m not an experienced runner so I wouldn’t know. But is that dude just talking nonsense?
Got these for $70 over the weekend! I’m getting back into running and excited to try these out even though I see most runners on YT are disappointed with them 😅
I am not really a big fan of the react foam so I am just going to stay with the novablast as my daily. The pegasus 40 overall seems to be another missed chance by Nike to build a good daily, at least for me.
I wholly agree with you Kofuzi. I vowed no more Peg after the 35, but then gave it a second chance with the 39 being on sale for half off. For sure, I now banish Peg line. So many better options in the price point with more responsive and softer midsoles.
I have had numerous pegs since 02’ and most have been a good experience as a workhorse do it all shoe. I recently picked up some 39s on discount and while I like the midsole foam update, I hated the air pocket in the forefoot. I could literally feel it protruding into the ball of my foot. I had never experienced that in any previous iteration. I am now rocking the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 and Altra Torin 7. For similar cost both of these shoes are much better to run in.
The Pegasus was my first “real” running shoe that I got fitted for when I was a kid so they hold a special place in my heart. I’ll probably always buy a pair regardless of the number of miles I put in them. I understand your sentiment; we love the peg for its consistency but we somehow want more out of them. That’s maybe asking too much out of this shoe when there are other plenty of other options out there.
That hot spot and pain after a certain amount of miles is no joke. I’ve had that experience in the 37’s and two pairs of the 38’s. I’ve learned that for me the sweet spot is up to about 8 miles. I definitely wouldn’t recommend these for long runs.
I feel it's the shoe. I can never get into a groove when running in a Pegasus. Surprisingly, my go-to daily trainer this year has been the UA Flow Velociti Wind 2. Bought them at a discount though, not worth the full $160.
A big issue here is this is currently the highest tier shoe Nike makes in a Wide size. It fits me better than any NB, Hoka, Saucony, etc. I REALLY wish Nike would make more wide shoes, because they nailed this upper in wide.
Wanted to love the pegs (had the 35s) but the impact absorption felt non-existent relative to other daily trainers, my feet would feel bruised with every step.
This isn’t just me but I had my 40s pop the front pocket twice… even Nike was like yeah it happens and replaced them but geezus… after the mileage break in the shoes is uncomfortable. I found that the tread seems to be reduced to accommodate the air pocket, in turn my 40s did not last as long as my 37s 38s or 39s… looking at some Hokas after a pretty severe ankle injury earlier this year… just need a little bit of stability that the heel and ankle part of the 40 doesn’t have anymore
That's super fair. I picked up the 39 recently to begin swapping into my run and while it is...very basic I do not entirely mind that. But it's also been driving my half marathon training. Next time I do a marathon build I'm not sure how much I'll love it.
I'm also a fan of the Peg 36. The full-length zoom unit is great. I still have the Peg 37 in my rotation, since i got them on a good discount. They are decent. But there are definitely other shoes i enjoy more.
My bar for the Peg to change or improve is low. I actually liked the comfort of the 38, but the 39 feels really harsh to me. I'm skipping the 40, but would potentially grab the 41 if the ReactX that's supposed to debut in the Infinity Run 4 makes it into the Peg line. I'm too nostalgic for Nike Air, and as Kofuzi says, you can't really feel it in the Peg now. 😢
I am 51 and have used the Pegasus 37, 38, and 39. However, I have always felt they were a bit too soft. I prefer the Adizeros, even the regular Adizero. Firmer and great feel.
Same but I tried the 38s on a whim a couple years back. They were fine. Fairly cushy but there were always a few shoes in my rotation that felt just a cushiony, when that's what the run or body called for, while feeling like it had much better energy return.
Recently bought a pegasus 40 as my daily trainer and stumbled in this video for reassurance that I bought the right pair since I had just gotten serious with running 😅😂
I was always a swoosh fan and never even used to think about buying other shoe brands but I recently bought Adidas adizero SL on a very good discount and it has been the best daily trainer I ever owned nothing super special or fancy about the shoe but it's just a perfect daily trainer and does the job just flawlessly atleast for me, also Adidas always put good shoes on heavy discount and even if you dont get hands on them on discount its still a good investment. thanks! Kofuzi.
Sounds like the Pegasus 40 isn't significantly different from the Peg 39, which I like for winter and wet weather running -- warm upper, grippy outsole. But after 200 miles in the Peg 39 I got curious about a discounted pair of ASICS Dynablast 3 and tried 'em. After almost 100 miles, my impression is the Dynablast 3 is what the Pegasus could be and maybe should be. The FlyteFoam Blast midsole is cushy and lively, not just soft and squishy. The upper fit and overall feel are nearly identical to the Peg 39. So now the React midsole feels dated, and air bags superfluous. If a hypothetical Pegasus 41 has a midsole more like the FF Blast, but with the same laceup and outsole as the Peg 39, I'll be interested.
Kofuzi! Have you thought of raffling off these Pegasus 40's? I'm not sure about your other fans, but I love the Pegasus 40 and especially these ones that you made. Maybe a little Christmas raffle? Thanks for all the awesome content you make!
I used to love this shoe but after running in something else ( mach 5 and brooks ghost ) I found they bring nothing but injury. Those were the 38s and 39s. Something about the support and harsness in certain spots gave me ankle issues and mild achilles tendonitis. The 39 and 40 feel softer when i put them on in store but I'm not willing to gamble yet, I hope that the 41 full redo will make them better.
The Peg 35 is my first pair of proper running shoes and is still going strong. Just wish I had picked up the 36 as everything afterwards were just boring. But at least I still have my Turbo 2.
Fair review. I do think the Peg40 is the best Peg in years (and the Peg 36 love is nostalgic, try the Nike Rival Fly 3 of you think you miss the 36). I do think the Peg 41 will get some significant changes. Mostly in the foam. I would expect it to be mostly Cushlon 2.0 or the new ReactX, but still Air Zoom… pure React seems to be on its way out. The Pegasus is the basic default for a performance running shoe, and that is ok. There are other “performance trainers” out there to choose from… something to be said about boring simplicity though. You know, the whole “workhorse with wings” thing.
I've been running with Pegasus since the 32 version. It was my very first "real" running shoe. Loved the 34's up to 36's. So many 21k races, workouts and PBs it's hard to not get attached to it. I'm still using a pair of 39, and for me it feels like a piece of old tech. Its running feeling is predictable as it can be. Even though I like the Pegasus so much, and even like the way it behaves it's hard to justify the Pegasus. Other than being "just" a budget shoe when you find a nice discount. I hope Nike may update the Pegasus for real, as soon as possible.
I am running those shoes for easy run now that my vomero 16 are 800 kms and I feel like the Pegasus are hard, not so comfortable. Seems that they give their best at 4.30-4.20 m per km , if you run slower they are bad. Not sure why. The vomero are the opposite, if you run them at 5.00 5.15 are perfect, if you run fast they melt 😂 I am trying to make me like these shoes but … they are good looking but definitely not my favourite to run on it
I tried these on yesterday and was pretty disappointed. I could feel the plastic bands in the upper (not sure what they’re called) poking directly into the front of my medial malleolus of tibia. Definitely the right size too- everything else felt fine. It was really weird and uncomfortable. I liked the 36-38, but have really disliked the 39 and 40.
Nike pegasus 39s gave me foot pain plantar faculitis and shin splints its not me its the shoes! And after researching it many ppl have suffered from similar injuries!
In previous years, I’ve had to buy second pairs of the Peg to confirm that I didn’t just get a bad pair the first time. I was thinking that perhaps the air units had popped (they hadn’t)
Echoing most of the comments here... Peg35s were last decent Pegs in the legacy lineup. Peg Turbo v1 and v2 were also quite nice. Anything beyond those versions of Pegs were a pass... and Nike outlet fillers.
@@kofuzi Better is quite subjective, IMHO. We tend to associate that word with a great feeling that we had after a run. But there were a lesser choices then compared to now. Imagine if we never had FFBlast+, PwrrunPB, Zoomx, Fuelcell, Nitro, etc… and the Peg40 was the Peg36. That Peg36(Peg40) would’ve been the better shoe. Alas, we got spoiled with the better foams now and have “better” experiences with them compared to any version of React.
I used to work at nike and loved the older Pegasus models. But these new pegasus they dish out kinda suck. I put in about 20 miles in mine and decided to return them. A little disappointed and really wanted to get that nostigic feeling from the older pegasus feelings like from years ago.
I really liked the customization you have done! It might not be Kofuzi Classic, but it really looks good, very tasty. I would wear it as a casual shoe or to the gym even if it didn't work as a daily trainer for running purposes.
Somehow the Pegasus causing me to overpronate I’m a forefoot striker Anyone same experience? Running in the hoka mach 5 and have no issues Same for all other shoes like Adidas ultraboost etc. Only the Pegasus are weird somehow. Also I can feel the air pockets. Like unwanted objects under my forefoot.
I’ve switched the to Novablast now instead of the Peg. Just feels like a little more cushion. Like you I’m getting older and I enjoy the extra cushioning in some other daily trainer like the Vomero
Same switch I made. First few runs in the NB I couldn't believe how fast I felt, and perhaps more importantly, how much I enjoyed running again! As most of us are hobby joggers with no sponsorship or titles to win. Fun is what counts more than just about anything!
@@kofuzi I have not. do they make 13 wide shoes? im trying to get in better shape so just beginning out. I've always just worn boots. so far only shoes I found in my size were thees cheap slip on ones from Walmart , but I got a front ball of foot pain im having to heal up from them. Looking to get a good pair. I have a pair of brooks 13 2E but right side one causes pain on right Sid of foot, so must not be wide enough, feels like theres no sole under my right side of that foot when wearing them.
I ran my first Chicago Marathon in 2017 in a Pegasus (maybe 34?) I wouldn't want to run a marathon in 2023 in a pegasus. See caption on the thumbnail for this video.
I would rank the Pegasus like this: 1. Pegasus Trail 4 : that perfect combo of road and trail. This is hoe rect should be. 2. Next Nature: The logical successor of the the turbo's. The upper should be fixed with version 2.0. 3. Vomero: Should be called the Pegasus +. 4. Pegasus 40. All they had to do was make the react like the Peg trail 4.
I think younger runners might incur less risk with Brooks for first shoe. Even the Hyperion Tempo (one of their excellent models that stands out among all brands along with the new Hyp Max) goes on discount here and there. And Brooks don’t seem to cause hurt feet for as many runners even if they’re not the most exciting or high tech shoes on the market.
I can always tell which kid has a parent who runs when I see a Brooks Ghost at the track meet. It’s a great choice, but definitely not something most kids would choose on their own
@@kofuzi Then for the budget-minded there’s that Revel which I think is a more fun shoe, lower drop and very versatile, though I haven’t tried the last 2 iterations. But I still think Brooks is reliable with uppers at least and you don’t hear much about injuries from them.
Yea got my SLs for $60. Its accurate to say its like a firmer Pegasus. Not great but not terrible. I wouldnt recommend either to hobby jogger friends my age. I dont think the SL will last as long as my adios 6 though. It doesnt use continental rubber. Man i remember in college the Pegasus was great.
I’ve not been impressed by the Pegasus for a while, again probably since v36. Absolutely loved the Turbo v2 (not tried the new version… and probably won’t as it doesn’t fit anywhere into my rotation). Want to love the Peg as it’s been a huge part of my running life but sadly seems like it is, like you said, a go to trainer for beginners.
I remember when the original Pegasus came out. It was gray with a blue swoosh, i don’t think it had Air in it (making its cheaper), and Retailed for around $40. Ironically, the Pegasus was geared for the same type of runner which Kofusi thought the 40s would be good for!
@@kofuzi you may be right, but it was more of a budget option and on those days the Air shoes were the top of the line shoes. I first remember Air shoes about 1980 during cross country season. It was only in a couple models of running shoes. The Pegasus came out when I was in college. I am no historian for sure but this is what I remember. Cheers
@@kofuzi I had a pair with the visble air cushion 40 years ago. I thought it was fantastic at the time. I used it for everything, 5k to 25k. Sadly, I haven't run at all since the 80s. Something has rekindled my interest but I'm very unfit :(
Great review, as always. For someone who is trying to make a transition from 5k to 10k, can you please suggest a running shoe by Nike . I bought Peg38 which was suggested by you 2 years back and as a beginner I am very much pleased with the outcome ,thank you .
If you enjoy the Peg 38, you will probably like the Peg 40. For longer runs, consider the Vomero or the Infinity. For long runs with some pace changes, try the Invincible
I always really like the Pegasus, but agree 35/36 was its heyday. Reebok Floatride Energy is a great option. Adidas SL is nowhere near as good as either imo, though.

I'm too nostalgic for Nike Air, and as Kofuzi says, you can't really feel it in the Peg now. 😢
Did you end up getting the infinity run 4?
Kofuzi, have you ran in the Skechers GoRun Ride 11? If yes, thoughts?
I have same feeling too since peg 39, its not the shoe fault, i have other option or need the other shoe can givr
I am 51 and have used the Pegasus 37, 38, and 39. However, I have always felt they were a bit too soft. I prefer the Adizeros, even the regular Adizero. Firmer and great feel.
Thanks for the feedback!
I never buy any Nike pegasus model before .It never comes to my mind when finding a new running shoes .
Same but I tried the 38s on a whim a couple years back. They were fine. Fairly cushy but there were always a few shoes in my rotation that felt just a cushiony, when that's what the run or body called for, while feeling like it had much better energy return.
Wow the B Roll “Non-Elite” is stunning
When I had too many beers I bought the Takumi Sen 9, last week 🤣🤣
Recently bought a pegasus 40 as my daily trainer and stumbled in this video for reassurance that I bought the right pair since I had just gotten serious with running 😅😂
If you like it, then keep enjoying it. Don’t let me stop you
I was always a swoosh fan and never even used to think about buying other shoe brands but I recently bought Adidas adizero SL on a very good discount and it has been the best daily trainer I ever owned nothing super special or fancy about the shoe but it's just a perfect daily trainer and does the job just flawlessly atleast for me, also Adidas always put good shoes on heavy discount and even if you dont get hands on them on discount its still a good investment. thanks! Kofuzi.
I agree with your assessment about the Adizero SL. It’s a dependable shoe that gets the job done without a lot of fanfare
I had not considered that
Zoom air and thorns don’t mix. They should just use Zoomx in all pegs.
I don’t mind the colors. Kind of swag
I don’t anticipate drastic change for 41, but who knows? Anything can happen
I found a pair of kipchoge Pegasus 40’s for $62 in the outlet. Even if the ride doesn’t work out for me, I couldn’t pass it up as a casual shoe 😂
The Peg 35 is my first pair of proper running shoes and is still going strong. Just wish I had picked up the 36 as everything afterwards were just boring. But at least I still have my Turbo 2.
Turbo 2 is all you need in the Pegasus lineage
Just get the 39 instead, they are the same but half the price..
Great analysis.. I'm also a Vamero guy.. however WAITING LONG TIME FOR 17!!
I know, right? Where is it?
What are your thoughts on these shoes for overpronators? The standard description I see from Nike is a neutral shoe. Thoughts.
i bought a pegasus 35 back when you made a video on it :)
Your design looks like a trail shoe 😅 i love'em ❤
Reminds me of an old Lone Peak colorway
Their customization tool knows all the tricks to filter out curse words lol. It also filters out other brand names!
Which sneaker company is the most durable and reliable?
Tried these in the stores, but the upper mesh felt kind of too plasticky to the touch for me.
What's up with the outsole? That look is away turning!
Nike pegasus 39s gave me foot pain plantar faculitis and shin splints its not me its the shoes! And after researching it many ppl have suffered from similar injuries!
I dont run in pegasus anymore since the 37s, they dont change that much
My friend has had to return 2 pairs of Peg 40s due to the air units popping. And he’s a smaller lighter runner
In previous years, I’ve had to buy second pairs of the Peg to confirm that I didn’t just get a bad pair the first time. I was thinking that perhaps the air units had popped (they hadn’t)
I'm curious, if you customize the shoes, were they made in the USA or still made in China? Some of the colors offered in the website are very cool.
I don’t know off the top of my head
Echoing most of the comments here... Peg35s were last decent Pegs in the legacy lineup. Peg Turbo v1 and v2 were also quite nice. Anything beyond those versions of Pegs were a pass... and Nike outlet fillers.
Are we just being nostalgic? Or were those older Pegs really that much better? I’d like to think that the old ones were better
To me it feels like the Pegasus is due for a similar overhaul that Asics gave the Nimbus 25s.
It is what it is.. the end of kofuzi x pegasus, so far i didn’t see any review on supernova 2, what your thought on adidas supernova 2 mike?
I don’t have plans on reviewing the supernova 2
Somehow the Pegasus causing me to overpronate
I’m a forefoot striker
Anyone same experience?
Where did you get the hot spot on your right foot? After about 30 minutes it feels like there is a small rock in my right arch.
under the pads of my foot
Mike, I’m not sure that you can call yourself a non elite runner anymore 🤙💪🏻🏃♂️
Yeah you're elite man
I'm diggin the yellow tho, reminds me of caterpillar shoes which is great looking
I like the concept of the shoe I think I was trying to make. But there’s something in the execution that isn’t quite right
true, 36 was the best one
this is the only nike in my size so hope it works out for me. honesty theres not many shoe companies making 12.5 wide shoes.
Hope it works for you!
Have you looked at New Balance or Altra?
@@kofuzi I have not. do they make 13 wide shoes? im trying to get in better shape so just beginning out. I've always just worn boots. so far only shoes I found in my size were thees cheap slip on ones from Walmart , but I got a front ball of foot pain im having to heal up from them. Looking to get a good pair. I have a pair of brooks 13 2E but right side one causes pain on right Sid of foot, so must not be wide enough, feels like theres no sole under my right side of that foot when wearing them.
Are Pegasus 40 shoes are appropriate for daily wearing? Not especially for running i want to wear to feel relaxation in daily usage
If they feel comfortable for you, then yes.
Can I run a full marathon on pegasus 40
I ran my first Chicago Marathon in 2017 in a Pegasus (maybe 34?)
I wouldn't want to run a marathon in 2023 in a pegasus. See caption on the thumbnail for this video.
I would rank the Pegasus like this:
But I still think Brooks is reliable with uppers at least and you don’t hear much about injuries from them.
brooks has so many options i dont know what to get.
Peg 32 was my all time fav
that was a good year
Yea got my SLs for $60. Its accurate to say its like a firmer Pegasus. Not great but not terrible. I wouldnt recommend either to hobby jogger friends my age. I dont think the SL will last as long as my adios 6 though. It doesnt use continental rubber. Man i remember in college the Pegasus was great.
I get the same pain with Pegasus shoes as of late
You have outgrown Nike !
What would be some good alternatives
I discussed two in this video near the end
Pegasus 40 vs Novablast 3, which one is better for daily training ?
Novablast 3
I remember when the original Pegasus came out. It was gray with a blue swoosh, i don’t think it had Air in it (making its cheaper), and Retailed for around $40. Ironically, the Pegasus was geared for the same type of runner which Kofusi thought the 40s would be good for!
Didn’t the original Peg have air in the heel? (It just wasn’t visible?)
Maybe I’m remembering wrong
@@kofuzi you may be right, but it was more of a budget option and on those days the Air shoes were the top of the line shoes. I first remember Air shoes about 1980 during cross country season. It was only in a couple models of running shoes. The Pegasus came out when I was in college. I am no historian for sure but this is what I remember. Cheers
@@kofuzi I had a pair with the visble air cushion 40 years ago. I thought it was fantastic at the time. I used it for everything, 5k to 25k. Sadly, I haven't run at all since the 80s. Something has rekindled my interest but I'm very unfit :(
I also have the same issue with Pegasus but mine is Pegasus 39.. and my 1st time using Pegasus 😅
@@kofuzi thanks for replying , is it ok to buy Adidas Boston 11 refuel instead as it’s on sale .
I always really like the Pegasus, but agree 35/36 was its heyday. Reebok Floatride Energy is a great option. Adidas SL is nowhere near as good as either imo, though.
I miss the old Pegasus
My discounted novablast 3s blew my peg39s out of rotation for me 💀💀 Same thoughts on the 45 minute feeling
Yo, what’s going on!! Good thing they are so so many options now 🤷🏻♂️😁
rip specially the big drop with kinda firm foam
