My favourite set. I kind of love that it's a small range, then I don't feel tempted to buy them all - however I could totally cope with another set of 12 or so new colours. (Big fan of the POP sound effect you use!)
Thanks so much Laura! 🤗 Yes that's very true, and I'd always prefer muted/natural colours compared to brights so this set works really well for me! I definitely think there are some gaps in the colours though, a few more blues and greens would be perfect!
Love the illustration, it looks so soft and beautiful with just the pencils 😊💖 This seems like a lovely set, beautiful colors. I feel like this would be a good addition to a basic set of pencils which often contain primary and vibrant colors. Many interesting shades I usually don’t see in other sets. Would definitely be interested in trying these pencils 😄 Love your tests, it’s so helpful seeing how the pencils work on top of different paints 👌🏼
I love those pencils. After first sharpening they are more soft and are not making lot of dust. I love to use them with Derwent colorsoft and Cromaflow pencils.
Beautiful drawing! 😍🎨 I love to use these pencils alongside my beloved Derwent Lightfast, they work well together and compliment each other, and lightfast also keep a nice point.
There is also a tinted charcoal set. I love the drawing pencils and graphitints. I have a handful of coloursoft which I like as well. Derwent has some great pencils.
Love what you created Katie. I absolutely love my Derwent drawing pencils, I mainly do whimsical style portraits and found that I could use some of the pencils ion my work. I need to be brave and have a go at doing landscapes!
Fabulous review and a beautiful drawing Katie🧡 I have a few of these pencils that I bought open stock a while ago but you’ve definitely shown me the beauty of the other colours……….i just love the yellow ochre💛😍
I've got a couple of this pencils but as I saw you swatching I think I'm gonna add a few more to my collection. Mars Violet speaks to me and Yellow Ochre has a really interesting tone. Chocolate also looks great, I love it! Thank you so much for another great video! I love the art you've created at the end. Warm greetings from Poland :)
Thank you for this. I recently bought the 12 set but will have to buy a few more open stock after watching this. Loved watching you layer and complete this landscape. Very inspiring and informative, as always. 😊💖👏
My unsolicited two cents: I don't think it's worth getting the 24 set. A lot of the colors are very similar in tone and value. In retrospect I wish I'd just gotten the 12 set. Anyway, something to consider. But if you have them open stock, that's great - I've never seen them open stock where I live, just the sets.
I watched this Sunday night and forgot to do this! Like 👍🏻 it and leave a comment 🥰. It’s just beautiful Katie, I love watching you create your artwork, it’s like it takes no effort at all. This piece is very tranquil and peaceful which is what I just said to you on IG. ❤️❤️❤️
@@JannickelandeExcellent choices!! 😍😍 I love the softness of crag green and wheat! I can’t believe I hadn’t seen ruby earth before, I think that’s such a lovely colour!
Great drawing at the end. I bought these pens a long time ago and was quite frustrated with how long it took to get a rich colour. So, it was good seeing you do your pic layer by layer! time to pull these pencils back out
This was a really great video! It was highly informative _and_ a fun watch - so thank you for sharing your insight /tips. The Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Luminance and Derwent (various) sets are my mainstays, and I love each of them for their unique qualities, but have also run into a number of the same issues /qualities you demonstrate in this video. By chance, it seems we gravitate towards many of the same items and techniques, and I found that your swatch page rather eye-opening - although I do swatch tests as well, I have never thought to do more extensive ones, e.g. comparing performance between each on a single swatch page, not to mention with completely different mediums (i.e. the pencil on acrylic /acryla gouache /gouache panels) - but thanks to you, I will be able to expand the utility of future swatch tests exponentially!!
ii love yr tests!! ii've layered koh-i-noor Progresso 24 pencil set wi/Derwent drawing pencils & find similar texture, ease of blending, matte finish, on most papers, including over watercolor, neoco,or 2s which ii use as watwecolor/gouache-ish in a stay wet palette, & with pen & inks, both just make me happy.
Thank you so much! 🥰 I've not tried the Koh-i-noor, though I kept seeing lots of stores when I visited Prague! They're not widely available over here I think, but that's great to know how they feel! Thanks for sharing 🥰
Lovely video as usual, Katie, so informative and your drawing was beautiful! I just wanted to point out that the Derwent Drawing pencils open stock are more expensive than the Luminance here in Sweden. Have a lovely evening 🥰
I thought the brown ochre was a yellow ochre and then i saw the yellow ochre and was like oh ok..youre right, derwent. I absolutely love the warm earth. Prob my fav along with the wheat and ochres and olive. Lol What am i saying? I love them all! I do think the terracotta sanguine and mars orange are a bit similar but that just means i have backups
I totally agree, I keep deciding my favourites and then add more and more to the list 😆 they all work so well together! I agree about the three oranges, I wish they varied a little more in tone
I love them. You don’t need both. I have a combination set to get the colours I need. Lightfast have a couple of epic dark purples that no one else has ever made, and a think called arctic white which I thought would be useless but I’m in love with. In the drawing pencils I find the mars violet particularly useful.
I like both - the Derwent Lightfast are a bit firmer than the Luminance: they've got more oil in their composition. But each brand has its wonderful qualities. I'm glad I have both, even though lately I've been using my Polychromos mostly because I'm doing tons of layering.
Hi Katie, what pencil sharpeners have you been using with your derwent and luminance pencils? I have a kum automatic long point, but I'm not satisfied with it
Hi Julia! I recommend the Derwent Pastel & Charcoal pencil sharpener - it's worked really well for me and my pencils! I also really like the Faber Castell 9000 pencil sharpener which gets a lovely point too, and has a compartment for sharpening so great for plein air 🤗
Very interessting. Thanks for testing 🤗👌🏻 In Germany the Derwent pencils are much more expencive than the Faber Castell 🙈 But there are many different types. The "best" derwent lightfastness is extremly expensive. Do you know them? Are there worth to test them?
Oh really!! Wow, that is a big difference in price compared to here! I've only got two of the Lightfast pencils so haven't done a proper test but I really like the ones I have! 😊
@@KatieMoody I have only 2 pencils of Lightfast, too. And I haven not tested them yet. 😂 What a coincidence! 😳😅 I guess, the price-difference depend on shipping Costa, but I am not sure. The Luminance are expensive everywhere 😂
I LOVE my Lightfast - really great color range with some lovely purples. I'm always frustrated by the range of lightfast greens in any brand, but my Derernt Lightfast have a better range than most.
Since you also own the Derwent inktense colored pencils, how do these two compare to each other? Obviously inktense colored pencils are water soluble- but if one was to use it as a color pencil, not adding water , how would it compare to derwent colored pencils? I do have inktense color pencils, but not these color pencils in this video
The Inktense don't blend very well together compared to the Derwent drawing, the drawing ones feel much softer! I also find the Inktense create more of a scratchier/uneven texture when they're not used wet so for me I don't think they compare!
Oooh good question Michelle! If I had to just pick my top faves and most used so far, it would be: Olive Earth 5160, Sepia (red) 6110, Smoke Blue 3810 and Solway Blue 3615. Other close faves would be Crag Green 5090 and Wheat 5715 🥰
In the US derwent drawing is 51$ right now on Amazon Polychromos are 39$ right now on amazon and luminance are 51$ right now on amazon. Obviously orices vary and I've seen the derwent and poly go on sale for a few dollars cheaper but ive only seen the luminance be more expensive (up to 60 at times)
I’ve never gotten this much dust off these pencils. Do you really use your pencils grinding in this hard? I can’t imagine you could spend much time drawing if you are actually using this much force.
I use them alongside my mixed media so I do use quite a lot of pressure, but yes, I draw everyday! I find it's important to show the full swatches of colour, because you can see how much the colour changes when I do the soft and hard pressure test. As I said in the video, I rarely just use pencils which is why the drawing I did was a good test to build up layers.
These are my favorite pencils. I hope Derwent will eventually expand this range.
That would be so good! I wish there were more than 24, though it is lovely to know these work so cohesively as a palette alone 🤗
I’ve heard rumours this might be happening
It would be nice if they did even another 12 of more.classic colors but slightly muted versions of them maybe
But they are not vegan😔
This all set is a dream in terms of colours, I have a few already but might buy all the shades 🤩
Yesss, such a gorgeous set of colours! Often there are shades in pencil sets I don't use but I know these will all get a lot of use 😍
Oooo good timing mine are arriving tomorrow
Oh perfect!!! I’d love to know what you think when they arrive! 💛

Would light blue and ochre blended give you a bright green?
The Solway blue is a bit too light to blend the green I'm after! I think if there was a mid-tone blue in the set it would work better 😊
