If I had $1 for every time I’ve heard people asking for these in more colors…TH-cam, Facebook groups, Reddit, Twitter…artists literally everywhere want them in a wider range. So strange that Derwent doesn’t add more earthy muted colors to this line. You could easily expand to 48 colors and keep it with a landscape palette. We should all be writing to Derwent or something. Money waiting to be made, Derwent! 😬
That's so funny that you say that. I just emailed them requesting more colors for this set and thought maybe I was being pestilent. Now I know there are more people who agree.
OMG YES! No one talks about these but they are literally the BEST colored pencils I have ever used! And Luminance and Polychromos are my faves, but even the Luminance aren't as good as these!
I'm in love with these for portrait sketching - especially all the earth tones! So glad to find others that love these, they really aren't that well-known
Beautiful artwork! I too have been using these pencils for years and I agree that they are underrated. I do seem to be in the minority with regard to not wanting the colour range to be expanded though. I think I feel that this is a very special and unique set for those of us who favour earth tones and a more muted palette; it is very much the colours of the landscape in Cumbria where Derwent is based and also here in the neighbouring county of Lancashire. There are primaries and brights aplenty in other ranges and I love this set just as it is!
Thank you! Yeah, I can definitely see where you are coming from when it comes to the color scheme. I go back and forth on wanting more colors, but I do really love the color scheme as it is, too. It's unique and beautiful! Have you ever been to the Derwent Pencil Museum? I hear it's really cool! I have been to that side of the pond, but if I ever make it there, I definitely want to visit the museum.
Hi! If I may ask, as you've been using these pencils for such a long time, which papers did you find more suitable? I'm struggling about, testing papers that range from pulp to 100% cotton, and still haven't found anything satisfactory for the most used techniques. I'm willing to use it for animal illustrations (fur, feathers and so on...).
I really love them on the smooth side of the Canson Mi-Teintes. I have also used them with good success on Arches Hot Pressed Watercolor paper. Hopefully, others will chime in here and answer as well!
@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you so much. I haven't tried neither of those two, but both are highly recommended for other techniques and materials. I'll check them out! Kind regards. 🙌
Awesome picture as always Shana! I love scenic, outdoors pictures and I also love these pencils. Since Derwent came out with their 72 Lightfast line, then added 28 to that line to make a 100 set of Lightfast, I seriously doubt they will expand on this lovely line of pencils. I keep my 24 set of Drawing Pencils in the same pencil case as my 100 Lightfast. I have the set of 12 Drawing Pencils on my coffee table in front of me, not far from my Polychromos in a Lazy Susan.
Thank you, Cheryl! I agree, I doubt they will ever expand this line, but I am pretty happy with this line as is. I do love the Lightfast line as well, and often use both lines together! It's great that you keep them out in a place where you can easily access them! They are beautiful pencils for sure!
Yes! I have maybe 1 or 2 of these. I used one a few weeks ago and suddenly wondered why I wasn't using them all the time. They are so smooth and buttery.
Yes, open stock is the best, especially if you fall in love with a particular color and use it all the time. I'm always bummed when a brand doesn't offer their products open stock.
Derwent Drawing, more than any other colored pencil, is an absolute PERMANET spot in my art supplies. MUST HAVE. They are the best for base layers, no contender.
I like doing landscapes and such and these, along with the graphitints, would be perfect😊 But, I also like to do other subjects as well, so I can see myself building up quite the pencil collection! I already have some prismacolors (a dedicated manga pack and the 36 pack Verithin's) and some cheaper color pencils I take out with me to do rough and prelim work. I also use those for just coloring in as well...good "therapy"!!! 😊
I love these and the Graphitint for landscapes! Both lines lend themselves perfectly to natural subjects! Buying pencils can certainly become addictive. I have a terrible time stopping myself when I discover a new pencil I haven't used before, lol.
Totally agree with you, despite not using colored pencils that much I drew with various brands, including Faber Castell (Polychromos), Caran D'ache (Luminance) and Derwent (Artist, Coloursoft, Inktense and Watercolor) but none compares with the Derwent Drawing. At least in my opinion, the result between classic pencil and pastel is great because if these pencils are used well, then the result is similar to old storybook illustrations. Beautiful...
YES!!!!! My favorites too! I’m kind of mad that Derwent expanded Inktense, but still hasn’t expanded this line! Even for landscapes and nature, these are NOT ENOUGH COLORS. I use these for nature journaling, but have to carry another 12-20 colors from other lines to have what I need.
Thanks so much for your review and for highlighting how phenomenal these pencils really are. I love using them on landscape backgrounds and they just work without any issues. I'd also love to see the set expanded. More darker greys and grey green, cloud blue, Lincoln green, light sand and pale lavender from the Coloursoft set would be a great addition if they can be made lightfast.
They are gorgeous and subtle. It has been said (in the context of Beethoven's composition techniques and style) that one of the most important features of art is limitation, or the sense of what to leave out, just as important as what to include. The only thing I would say this set needs, for its wonderful nature study potential, is a little more green range, or else the means to make some more greens. I have been wanting to move in that direction, going for exact natural tones and the moods they invoke (November in the soul, as Melville said), and I am thinking about this set of pencils and toned papers, greys and browns and cream. Sorry for chattering on, but I sometimes am really struck by how all the arts have emotions under them that ring the same no matter what the medium is, and a color set like this can provide that awareness.
There is no need to apologize, I like in-depth dialog when it comes to the arts. I agree with what has been said about art and limitation. I actually think that limitation often breeds more creativity. It, at the very least, forces us to do some creative problem solving and can lead to some pretty interesting, outside of the box, thinking. It seems counterintuitive, but setting limits is also a great way to get oneself out of a period of art block. Sometimes, having too many options can be overwhelming. And, of course, setting limits within a piece of art can lead to a sense of cohesion, amongst other qualities. As someone who loves creating landscapes, I would love to see more greens as well! I think that is definitely an area of potential growth for this range. Toned paper compliments these pencils beautifully, and these pencils layer well on a toned background. I love using them on Canson Mi-Teintes!
I have had these on my wish list for a long time and will snap them up if they go on sale for Prime Day. They'd be amazing for portraits I think.....(as well as nature scenes etc) thanks for the comprehensive review! :)
Patty-I don't have the whole yet. I'm building LOL. I love them, and I like that there is a limited pallette . Thank you for talking about these pencils. We need to get the word out.
I just found these pencils and they are SOOOOO nice..... omg the colours though... I want more. It's so disappointing to read everywhere that they don't have plans to add to the set
Hi thanks for reviewing the drwent pencils i love there coloered pencils it best of ower art work i use it when i do portraits good luck with everything
Derwent I believe are based in the Lake District in the UK, we do get sun but we also get shed loads of grey weather and wet days, which these pencils would I am guessing be ideal for. I use pastels but after watching your demo, I am tempted to get a set, I am off camping in the forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and think a bit of sketching with them may be fun.
I think you would like these pencils after working with pastels. They have a pastel like feel to them. They aren't as soft as pastels, but certainly softer than other colored pencils!
Hey, Shana! Great video. Yeah, I love these pencils. Been using them for years, and you're right, they are underrated and not talked about nearly as much as they should be. Like you, I can't have too many Chinese white pencils. I use them on virtually every colored pencil piece, and even on oil pastels (I'm on an oil pastel kick this summer, by the way).. Take care.
Thank you!! I agree, they work great with oil pastels! I use my Chinese white with pild pastels a lot! The consistency is perfect for working with oil pastels. Now that my studio is finished, I need to get back to working with oil pastels soon. It's been too long for me!
@@CautionArtistatPlay I'd definitely like to see your oil pastel videos. As I said, I'm putting aside the colored pencils for the summer and concentrating on oil pastels for awhile. I need to become better at handling them for certain situations, like getting clouds to look more realistic. I struggle with some applications of oil pastel, so any video you might make that demonstrates various oil pastel application would be very welcome! Thanks!
Sure! I will have to see what I can come up with. Maybe I will do a new oil pastel piece after I finish the colored pencil drawing that I am currently working on!
Love your art. I agree with how wonderful these pencils lay down & have often wondered why there are very few tutorials using these pencils. Please do more videos & tutorials featuring the Derwent Drawing pencils!!
Thanks! I’m ordering these. While I love vibrant colors, I’m finding myself drawn to muted, yet strong, sturdy colors, often found in nature….in woodsy scenes and landscapes. I was recently using Derwent’s Graphitint along with graphite pencils and I really enjoyed the more muted tones. So these are definitely going in my stash too. 👍😊
Thank you! I have these and the Graphitint and use these more because they are more like a regular colored pencil, where as the Graphitint has a graphite base, so it just depends on what medium you gravitate towards more. I love them! They definitely have their own unique qualities!
i love these pencils! Such creamy, thick pencils and natural colours!btw have you tried clairefontaine pastelmat? its a high quality paper with different colours, you might like them, its amazing for colored pencils and pastels!
Это настоящий укрывистый карандаш.💪🔥 Самый самый крутой. И его нигде не возможно купить. Наши магазины его не продают. !! Странно что так. Ваш канал очень интересный. Инногда смотрю в переводе а инногда просто смотрю. ❤
I'm sorry that these aren't sold where you live. They are a lot of fun to draw with. Thank you for watching my videos, I hope you have been enjoying them!
Hahaha no way! What a coincidence ! I was drawing with these pencils while browsing all good stuff on TH-cam and tada ! I found this video !!! ❤nice ! Love the pencils, love your drawing, right now hitting a button to subscribe!
Because of the name I thought they were more for drawing instead of colouring which is what I do. So to be quite honest I never gave them a second look 🤔🤷🏻♀️. Thanks for pointing them out for us. Greetings from the Netherlands!
You should do a drawing of Stevie Ray Vaughan using these. Especially a drawing of him on stage. I bet this palette would be perfect for him. That's the first thing I thought of.
The finished sketch is lovely, and the fine free line detail impressive, considering how soft the pencil cores are as you say. Would you decide to use a fixative or some other measure to protect the surface for display, even considering the light fastness ?
I'm really impressed by that portrait of your friend you did with these! Especially how you achieved the hair details and also the details of the twigs and branches in the background. Did you manage to do that with only these pencils?! 😀 I have a few colors of this set and especially value them for having the whitest white and the blackest black! However, I never use them for detail work because I'm afraid to waste the lead 😅 Because the lead is so thick that I don't want to shave it all off just to get them sharp. I'm probably weird, haha
Thank you! I know the bulk of the work on that portrait was done with these. It's been a long time since I drew it, though, so I can't be sure that it was 100% Derwent Drawing. I may have had to pull in a Prisma or a Poly here or there, but I remember wanting to challenge myself by using mostly these, so I know that majority of the drawing was done with the Derwent Drawing.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Anyway, I love love love your style, especially when it comes to trees and nature scenes. It motivates me to want to be able to achieve this myself! 😊🌟
They are also favorites of mine, but I don't really regard them as "Colored pencils." They are more like classic drawing pencils which were originally sanguine, white, black, and dark brown.
When using them with acrylics, you will want to use them on top of the acrylics. Since acrylics are a water-based medium, the wax of the pencil would likely resist the paint if you were to layer acrylics on top of the pencil. They would likely work best on a matte acrylic. If it's a glossy acrylic, it may not accept the layers as easily. I find this technique also works better on paper than on canvas. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching! 💖
These are my favorite. I have all the various sets I think, not that I needed more than the 24, but I also got the 12 and 6 pack tins. Just needed to collect them all. 😂
Good, they should be talked about! I don't think they are talked about nearly enough for how good they are. I don't hear people talk about these (other than the Chinese white) nearly as much as the Derwent Lightfast or even the Inktense.
@CautionArtistatPlay I watch too much Lachri I guess 🤣 I love her. I haven't used the drawing pencils myself, but she brings up the fact they need more colors, a lot .. haha
@CautionArtistatPlay i watch a few others that have talked about it as well, but yea not near as much as Lisa haha. I'll probably buy them one day, but they aren't as priority as my other pencils. I just got their full set of 100 lightfast pencils, which is a fortune, so maybe one day I'll get around to trying those out but I'm broke for now! Lol
I know! I was looking at the FAQ's on their site, and it said they didn't have any plans to expand this line. Which is surprising because so many people want to see more colors!
what do ru rs rw rr marks on the colour pencils mean? If your pencils also came with the punched alphabet marks right below the sharpened end as mine please let me know what they are for.
I think that is there for Derwent to be able to trace back the pencil to see when it was made, etc. I found this statement in the FAQ'S on the Derwent website: "Each batch has a date code stamped on next to the imprint. This identifies the week that batch was made. From that, we can trace the exact details of when the pencils were manufactured: the day, the operator, the machine, etc." So I believe those are just codes the manufacturer uses.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you very much. I really like the colors. I am going to put them on my wishlist. I'm planning on rewarding myself with an art supply after a 30 60 90 day sketchbook challenge. What better way to motivate practicing and striving for improvement than some really quality art pencils.
I haven't noticed any real issues with wax bloom with these. They tend to lay down pretty matte as a general rule and don't have the same kind of waxy build up as a Prismacolor. Though there are times when, depending on how you are coloring, you may be able to see a difference in stroke pattern in different lighting, even in places completely blended. It's not very noticeable, though, and it doesn't take away from the image in any way.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thanks! I live in a humid and hot city, so worried about that bloom. These are otherwise really attractive for me. I want a pencil that I can use over oil pastels. Drawing my cat who passed away last month. Got a 12 set of Derwent Pastel Pencils, but they don't work as well as I had hoped. Lyra Rembrandt is my current top choice. I found your video because I was looking for artists who mix these media. What's your recommendation for this?
I honestly really like using the Caran d'Ache Pablo's over oil pastels. But I work on a sanded paper, and that makes all the difference because it gives the pencils something to grip through the layers of oil pastels. The Derwent Drawing pencils work too, but I tend to like the Pablo's a bit better for this.
@@CautionArtistatPlay ah! Awesome. Will check them out. I'm using pastelmat right now. The painting is turning out well, especially for my first time, but drawing whiskers, that's gonna be a challenge.
@akashmakkar7187 I think Pastelmat should work well for using colored pencil on top, I think it will have enough tooth! I hope it all works out for you! 🥰
Basically what you are saying is you have to learn how to use the medium you are using. Why do you need more than 24 colours in this medium is for creative tonal sketches all derwent products are excellent quality
These are not just for creative tonal sketches, though they are great for that purpose. But they can be used in any way someone feels comfortable using them as long as they enjoy the process and the final outcome is what they are seeking. The color choice is personal preference. Yes, Derwent products are all excellent, but they aren't all created equal. These have a different feel than other colored pencils and are way more opaque. I think it's those working properties that make people want more colors in this line. To each their own though.
I'm probably the millionth person to say this "The reason they seem to be underrated is because the number of colors is so limited." They have limited their own product - supply & demand. Don't provide the product until EVERYONE wants them, then you're nearly guaranteed to make a killing when you actually do release larger sets.
Nice review, but, I still prefer working with more colors. So, I doubt I would buy a whole set. I might pick up one or two in open stock so I can keep an open mind before saying no. 😉
if we need to integrate these colours with some more vivid dolours like a poppy red or blue or yellow etc. whcih Derwent set is made of similar material and can be mixed with this? thank you
Honestly, as far as material and feel goes, I think these are really like no other pencil out there. That being said, I have yet to encounter a colored pencil line that these don't mix well with. That includes pencils that aren't made by Derwent. I literally use the Chinese White in every colored pencil piece I do. If I had to choose another line from Derwent, it would be the Derwent Lightfast. Mainly because they are a high-quality pencil, and I love the way they blend. But you could use these with any artist quality colored pencil you have, and it should be fine.
If I had $1 for every time I’ve heard people asking for these in more colors…TH-cam, Facebook groups, Reddit, Twitter…artists literally everywhere want them in a wider range. I love Derwent drawing pencils. I so wish they would add more shades to the line.
They are beautiful to work with, I am surprised they haven't expanded the line.
I love these! Vibrant colours very expensive I only have a set of 12 but would love more
Thankfully, they are available open stock, so you can buy a pencil or two at a time of your favorite colors!
Thank you so much, have the most derwent sets, but didnt know how opaque there are
You're welcome!! Thank you for watching!
I have the 24 set of derwent graphitint, would there be any point getting these thanks, that drawing looks like a photo !!! Very talented
I have tried Patelmat, it's a great paper! I don't have a lot of it on hand at the moment, though, and I need to restock soon, lol.
Great review! Thank you
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
I love these pencils too!
They're fantastic!
Wow just wow 😮
Thank you! 🥰
I love derwent! Shauna have u ever used castle pencils? I know they aren't lightfast, but I live their creaminess price, and colors
I have not used them, mainly because, as you said, they aren't lightfast. But I have heard good things about them! 😊
Hahaha no way! What a coincidence !
I was drawing with these pencils while browsing all good stuff on TH-cam and tada ! I found this video !!! ❤nice ! Love the pencils, love your drawing, right now hitting a button to subscribe!
Haha, I swear TH-cam is psychic sometimes!! Thank you so much, I appreciate it!! 🥰💖
Because of the name I thought they were more for drawing instead of colouring which is what I do. So to be quite honest I never gave them a second look 🤔🤷🏻♀️. Thanks for pointing them out for us.
Greetings from the Netherlands!
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching!
I made a dupe of these colors in Prisma bec we don’t have these in the Philippines😂 I love this set, hoping to get it anytime soon
Goos idea! I hope they become available for you to purchase soon!
You should do a drawing of Stevie Ray Vaughan using these. Especially a drawing of him on stage. I bet this palette would be perfect for him. That's the first thing I thought of.
I don't do fan art, it's just not my thing. That does sound like it would come out really cool with these pencils, though!
The finished sketch is lovely, and the fine free line detail impressive, considering how soft the pencil cores are as you say. Would you decide to use a fixative or some other measure to protect the surface for display, even considering the light fastness ?
Thank you! I usually spray fixative over my work when it's done, but nothing too heavy.
I'm really impressed by that portrait of your friend you did with these! Especially how you achieved the hair details and also the details of the twigs and branches in the background. Did you manage to do that with only these pencils?! 😀
I have a few colors of this set and especially value them for having the whitest white and the blackest black!
Thank you! Trees and nature in general are among my favorite subjects to create!
Love these pencils
They are amazing!
I just bought these..they are so amazing!
They really are!! 🥰
I have all the derwents they are amazing
Definitely!!
Chinese white is the best white pencil out there imo xx
It's fantastic!
I love my set also!!
They are also favorites of mine, but I don't really regard them as "Colored pencils." They are more like classic drawing pencils which were originally sanguine, white, black, and dark brown.
Yeah, I can see that..
Sei bravissima.hai saputo far performare queste bellissime matite.❤
Grazie! 🥰
How would they work on acrylic layer? I do a lot of mixed nedia. How would they accept layers on top? Thank you ❤
When using them with acrylics, you will want to use them on top of the acrylics. 💖
@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you, this helps! I had my eye on them for a while ❣️
You are very welcome!!
These are my favorite. I have all the various sets I think, not that I needed more than the 24, but I also got the 12 and 6 pack tins. Just needed to collect them all. 😂
Haha, yeah, I have the various sets, too. I have bought them over the years, depending on which colors I have gotten low on! Lol
I want their charcoal colored pencils so bad
I haven't tried their charcoal pencils. Their tinted charcoal looks interesting. I will probably end up getting some eventually lol.
@@CautionArtistatPlay I'll keep an eye out for it. :)
Theyre talked about a lot actually haha.. cant count how many times ive heard people say derwent needs to come out with more colors
I haven't used the drawing pencils myself, but she brings up the fact they need more colors, a lot .. haha
Haha, yeah, that sounds like Lisa! Lol She's one of the only other people I have heard talk about them regularly. 😂
Lol
Haha, yeah, the Lightfast set is definitely an investment for sure!
Hello, do you use the red tip or white tip Faber-Castell Perfection Eraser with colored pencils?
Hey there! I use the white tip! It's my favorite and really gets the job done!
Fabulous pencils. Come on Derwent at least bump these up to a 48 count. They probably won't ever but we can dream...
I know! I was looking at the FAQ's on their site, and it said they didn't have any plans to expand this line. Which is surprising because so many people want to see more colors!
Are amazing!
🥰
Can I do portraits with these?
I have! It was more of a moody kind of antique looking portrait, and these were great for that!
what do ru rs rw rr marks on the colour pencils mean? If your pencils also came with the punched alphabet marks right below the sharpened end as mine please let me know what they are for.
I think that is there for Derwent to be able to trace back the pencil to see when it was made, etc. I found this statement in the FAQ'S on the Derwent website: "Each batch has a date code stamped on next to the imprint. This identifies the week that batch was made. From that, we can trace the exact details of when the pencils were manufactured: the day, the operator, the machine, etc." So I believe those are just codes the manufacturer uses.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you for your reply
@suparnamal4685 you're welcome!
I'm new to art and colored pencils. Would these be beginner friendly?
Absolutely! The blendability makes them a dream to work with!
That's a great idea!! I hope you lobe them when you get them!!
What about wax bloom?
Yeah, it definitely seems to be the way they do things, doesn't it? Not just Derwent, but many of the other companies, too.
Nice review, but, I still prefer working with more colors. So, I doubt I would buy a whole set. I might pick up one or two in open stock so I can keep an open mind before saying no. 😉
That's always a good way to go when trying something out!
jesus bro what did derwent PUT in these
I don't know! I'm guessing pigment mixed with a little bit of binder, then sprinkled with magic. 😂
if we need to integrate these colours with some more vivid dolours like a poppy red or blue or yellow etc. whcih Derwent set is made of similar material and can be mixed with this? thank you
Honestly, as far as material and feel goes, I think these are really like no other pencil out there.
@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you. my concern was not how these could mix with others but how others could be equally easy to mix with these :)
