Also! I got very far in this game with some college buddies before my ps2 died. We used it as an opportunity freshman year to get to know each other and the groupthink method of us considering weakness and prep made the combat a great time. I wish we could have finished it, but the philosophical choices it posed was a great way to learn about our personal philosophies and what we felt the best courses of action were. Often we were at choices for dozens of minutes without a definitive answer because the game let us debate and it was a really neat way to go about the game itself
I recommend playing SMT IV next as it evolves the aspects of the game from III. I think most fans would agree that IV has the most engaging plotline in the series and there's also Strange Journey with its own merits as a really good "smt on the go" sort of experience.
@@overleveledgames You're welcome! They are both fantastic and they are the two games in the megaten series I tend to revisit the most (along with III of course)
as someone who also recently this year played nocturne as my first smt (thanks to p5r) i am so glad that i picked vengeance for the megaten game i played next. i enjoyed all ~150 hours of getting that platinum maybe even more than the personas hahah
@overleveledgames I can only imagine . Having 3 of the best twitch streamers showing up to your door must of been awesome. It was probably a little scary as well that they where streaming
I think you should play SMTV Vengeance, since its kind of its actual successor, unlike 4. Digital Devil Saga is also good, but you would need to play two games to get the full story there.
Also: Isn't it a bit counterproductive to your argument of it being not as hard as people say while you had to play the second half on merciful? Then again, merciful in SMT translates more to a normal difficulty in other games. at least this was the case with the original game. Don't quote me on this but I think they turned down the difficulty a TINY bit for the remaster. At least in my experience since I played both and the old PS2 game was just CRUEL in my memory and I don't think me being younger back then and less experienced was that much of a factor. I also think SMTV is way easier than this.
Like I said, my reason of changing the difficulty was not to make battles easier, it was to lower the encounter rate to focus more on the environmental puzzles. All of my time in the battles were making me bored, so turning down the battles as a rule in the game made me enjoy the game more
I'd recommend you play SMT V Vengeance next, it's the newest game, it has some of the best gameplay and quality of life features out of any SMT - you can make any build you want and it's pretty balanced, but the hard difficulty is still reasonable (in Nocturne physical build is the best, but in V you can do anything you want and it can be viable, even ailment and luck builds)... BUT it depends on you - the Digital Devil Saga duology would be the one you want to play if you want to play another PS2 title that is on a technical level very similar to Nocturne. DDS has really amazing characters, story, somber atmosphere, and the gameplay is a lot better than Nocturne's too (re-learn skills at any time, you can customize an entire party now too). In contrast, while V has amazing gameplay the characters and overall story seems disjointed and rushed. If you play V Vengeance you actually have two routes - the original (Canon of Creation) and the new one that is an alternate story (Canon of Vengeance). The new route does gloss over details revealed in the original route, so I think you'd want to do Canon of Creation then do Canon of Vengeance. Edit: For the dungeons I definitely agree, the encounter rate can be stressful. You need to find a demon with the spell Estoma, when you cast it if your protagonist's level is higher than the encounter then the encounter will be skipped (I guess somewhat like repels in Pokemon).
I recommend you try to play either Devil Survivor Overclocked od the 3ds its such a great game with good characters and story it really represents what is great about Megami Tensei. and the other game I recommend you play is the Digital Devil Saga duology on the PS2 it has great atmosphere and is unique.
I personally beat Persona5, and while i really enjoyed the story part a LOT (even if I followed a step by step guide to make sure I 100% everything possible in the game), I really disliked the combat style and general rpg mechanics, I'm not a fan of their "bestiary" either.. or the pokemon style merging/upgrading.. I guess it's just not for me ;) So I doubt i'd really enjoy this one, and i have over 100 games on my todo list... Grats again for finishing this one :)
I am the type who likes starting at a certain point and then roughly playing in order from there, so I would recommend Digital Devil Saga (the very next game to release, but it's technically its own series) or Strange Journey (the next game in the series, but it's technically not a main title since it's not numbered). I personally do not like SMTV very much, though I have not played Vengeance.
@@overleveledgames Nice! Also, I made that comment before watching the rest of the video. Strange Journey would probably not be your game. If you thought the dungeons in Nocturne were tedious, oh boy...
DDS. You’re not going to regret making it the next one. It builds on so many of Nocturne’s systems

That's amazing! That's definitely one of the reasons that I'm excited to play more SMT!

Both IV and SJ are on my list as well! I think of these two, I'm leaning a bit more towards SJ. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thankfully, I own both PS2 copy's!

Thanks for the recommendations! I've always seen myself as a story-first gamer, so I'm leaning a bit more towards DDS right now

Nice! I'm actually currently setting down with my PS2 playing DDS, haha

Yeah, if you're not a fan of the combat mechanics of P5, this one might not be for you

I'm currently about 8hrs into DDS!

Vengeance is the best megaten game imo, so I'd play it.
I look forward to playing it!
