Thanks to Atlus for letting us interview Nocturne director Kazuyuki Yamai for this video! And shout out to Christian La Monte, who voices the game's protagonist the Demi-fiend, for doing an excellent job narrating!
nice
TH-cam doesn't show me your videos dude wtf
PLEASE RELEASE A FULL INTERVIEW TRANSLATION
WE ARE DESPERATE PLEASE
Yamai did not direct Nocturne, not the original at least. That goes to Kaneko and Cozy.
It’s awesome that you getting to interview them gives you an excuse to not decry how fucked up it is they are charging more money for the Dante stuff when it was included with the original release. Can’t imagine how hard it is to stand up when you get rid of your spines for videos like this
so nice to see that the Demi Fiend is willing to give us some trivia inbetween his busy schedule of rejecting gods and eating bugs
I just picture Demi-Fiend in a suit saying “Hello everyone and welcome to did you know gaming I’m your host Demi-Fiend”
@@SonikkuXenoHearts3587 in a suit but only the pants, shoes and tie
@@SonikkuXenoHearts3587 That made me laugh abit
Well he's certainly recruited me.
Indeed
I didn't even realize that the VA was voicing this video until he said it, that's the biggest plot twist
Yeah, didn't click until the very end. I feel dumb.
But the demifiend never talks? I don't get it.
Got a question why is there dlc for this game when the ps2 version has dante
I don't mean to offend, but I just thought the grunts were from some sound pack Atlus had at some point (like most developers). Also, I really don't see much difference from the Remaster to the emulated version upscaled...
@@GamerBoy870 not all ps2 versions have dante
Can’t believe they got the REAL Demi-Fiend, Lucifer’s right hand man and ender of the world, on for a video! Big fan.
Lucifer's right hand man? The dude literally punched out Lucifer. ;P
holy SHIT I remember you; you fucking posted a comment on my persona 5 imagining project channel around 2 months ago. not unexpected, but very happy seeing you here! (comments on that channel are very few and far between, so I always remember them)
@@UltimaKeyMaster I think you mean “lackey”.
When playing SMT3;
Step 1: buff your party
Step 2: debuff the enemy
Step 3: prey to RNJesus
Step 3 obviously being the most important. If it fails, try it again.
Nah it goes like this
Step 1: Crank that STR up on Demi-Fiend
Step 2: Smack the enemy until it dies
There is no step 3.
Another possible step is to grind to level 18 for matador and get uzume.
Step 4: enemy gets a random crit and you die
@@Mr.Faust3 step 5: you have high VIT so you tank the damage easily and Diarahan back to full
Step 6: Freikugel
YES. SMT IS BACK ON THIS CHANNEL. PEFECT CHOICE FOR NARRATOR
I honestly never get tierd of learning about nocturne development, world building, direction, etc. Not only a lot of thought was put into any aspect of this game, it's also such a vital game in atlus history and shaped many aspects of company's future.
The plot twist was that this was not simply a collection of facts about Nocturne.
It was the Demi-Fiend *recruiting you* to his party.
Because as we all know, the Demi-Fiend will forever and always think of all of you as simply random encounters.
We're not even worth the boss music.
Party? That's a stretch. More like his army, we aren't worthy of joining his actual party.
Let's be honest. Most of us would be fusion fodder.
Still not impressed
Well, I’m sold!
**Rhys joined the party.*
Finally!, Atlus sponsoring and making ads for Shin Megami Tensei!
Gotta make use of that persona money. Which I'm okay with if the popularity of P5 leads to more popularity of SMT.
@@Dr0dd Technically speaking the mobile game (which is technically a smt game) is making as much money as persona as this point.
Which is surprising, I thought it didn't gonna last long.
@@soragranda yeah I'm surprised too since they downsized the servers but knowing how gacha works also a bit bittersweet.
Well, at least the battle system is neat.
The real gem here is that "SMT V is on the horizon"! We'll get there one day...!
Not good as Persona
@@ralphtaylor7448 you are totally right sir. SMT is indeed the better of the two.
Just kidding I like both as well as DDS, devil survivor, devil summoner and the others

"Several demons are based on myths and legends"
Did you maybe mean "literally all of them"?
It's quite an understatement
there's black frost
and that's pretty much it
Does Chemtrail count?
I mean, while demons are inspired from the myths and legends of many places, they take many liberties for them. For example, I doubt Ose was described in the ars goetia as a bipedal leopard in speedos using twin blades.
@@supersnackbros2423 conspiracy theory, he does
"voicing the demi-fiend" Does he actually do anything other than grunt when he throws a punch?
There are two or three other grunts here and there I believe.
He talks in the announcement trailer.
So basically no. lol
He does different grunts when he uses some of the skills in the game
YOOO SMT VIDEO
This is how you do a sponsored video, guys
Hi all, I don't want to be rude, I know this took effort to put together, however there was plenty of misinformation in this video.
1. Planet of the Apes was used as a basis for understanding how Manikins were imprisoned, they did not influence the design at all.
2. Gegege no Kitaro is pronounced "geh" not "gee"
3. It's actually Kazuma Kaneko not Kaneko Kazuma, it's unusual because in your sources you correctly cite him as Kazuma Kaneko
4. The press turn system does not appear in Persona, however the system used in P3-5 is similar and arguably derivative.
5. There isn't any source cited for the claim the demifiend was planned to have a comp, I believe this was misconstruing the discussion about Cronenberg's Videodrome.
6. The cerberus "demo" was a lan test demo not a nocturne demo.
7. Lisa was not used in any demo and was instead used to test modeling and to stand in for the character Chiaki in cutscenes.
8. Kaneko Works doesn't accredit the design to be inspired by that movie at all, and the design itself is not similar at all, the criticism regarding the nose doesn't bolster the statement because other tengu in the game also don't have the traditional nose.
9. Magatama are not beads in Nocturne, they are parasite-like worm demons
10. Maken Shao is actually an enhanced port of Maken X and not a separate game.
11. The intent to stray from the popular high fantasy concept was something considered by Atlus before Kaneko joined them, not exclusive to Nocturne and has been stated by many other major figures at Atlus, it's even why Re Fantasy is an attempt to go towards fantasy concepts since contemporary settings are the new norm.
Again, I'm not trying to pull a "gotcha" but rather I want information to be spread that is honest and not going to ripple into commonly repeated pieces of misinformation which tend to plague the Megaten community.
I agree with this and don't see it as rude. There are a few facts that DYKG got wrong here but glad you clarify and hope they reach out to you or very knowledgeable fans to help build the research.
I cant believe Did you know Tensei is here commenting to Did you know Gaming. What a day to be in youtube
This, DYKG prides itself in research so a mistake or two can be excused. But 11 are way to much for this channel. That much mistakes and the sponsored nature makes it seems they just stitched together a basic script while the release of the remasterd is relevant. I expected better especially when tackling a series with so much misinformation as the MegaTen series.
Magatamas are spirits
Not demons
Theyre just conduits of magical power
@@eatanotherzio6811 actually they are described by atlus as a "demon parasite" the name refers to being a malevolent spirit which ties into the concept of being possessed as a shaman might tap into spiritual power, but it's in and of itself a form of demon
I made a whole video about the magatama and about if demifiend eats them not too long ago haha
9:38 I am so glad they added this, in the original I spent literal HOURS watching tv and spaming "fuse, unfuse, fuse, unfuse" to check skills until I got the godly combo.
Wait is there an unfuse button???
@@blatchie4608 I meant that in the menu for fusing you could back out of the process right before fusing and then reroll your skills. It was a process most people used before they let you pick your own inherited skills.
HOLY SHIT SMT IS BACK ON THE CHANNEL
This video feels like Ignatz telling me about ancient folklore which is oddly on brand for him
I dont know who Ignatz is but Im almost certain this isn’t them
@@TheDamnWinner The narrator voiced Ignatz in Fire Emblem Three Houses, as well as the late-video reveal that he also voices the Demi-Fiend.
@@UltimaKeyMaster Oh! Haha well now i look dumb. For some reason i thought ignatz was like a youtuber and this guy thought this was them
You say Ignatz but I hear Seliph in this video
Now that I think about it, this is the closest we got to Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei proper
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Ft. Christian La Monte Ft. Dante from the Devil May Cry Series
Can't believe the Demi-Fiend advertised his own game to us.
It seems to me that the demifiend’s appearance was likely also inspired by Tron. At least that’s the first movie that popped into my mind when the video said it was inspired by a film. The “human computer” aspect also made me think Tron, so Videodrome felt like a bit of a curveball
It's also clearly inspired by Devilman
@@Klonoa7H Good call, I didn't even pick up on that
No, the only info about the design inspirations cite trying to go the opposite of devilman and tattooed shaman.
The human computer thing was a dropped concept, as was the video drone concept.
I just realized Albion actually has that "nsfw part of the drawing" on its design, it's just half buried underground.
Got a question do I need to buy the dlc to access Dante
@@GamerBoy870 you can get his equivalent in Raidou as free DLC, but yeah you need that DLC if you want it to be Dante instead
@@matchanavi ok thanks
For the record, it's a remaster, not a remake. There's a huge difference between those two things.
its a BAD remaster
The VA for this video was a real treat! It was literally hyping me up the whole video.
The English VO for Nocturne is fantastic! Great work. I was skeptical if a game like Nocturne would even benefit from a voiceover at all, but the whole cast nailed it. It was great.

The reveal at the end is honestly the best part.
Featuring Demifiend from the Shin Megami Tensei series
Love smt 3 to death (and the other smt games) happy to see this here today. Happy to learn more about one of my favorite games
There's a fan theory that has SMT5 taking place after Nocturne. The SMT 5 trailer features the Nocturne version of Lucifer over the 4 and 4A version, as well as allude to a few things that happen during the TDE, as well as a demon near the end that could be Demi-Fiend himself.
Demi-fiend: "now allow me to show you how the game was made also to say that the game is out" a good marketing stunt that atlus had done
"gee-gee-gee"?
Oof
I know, right?
The younger audiences will definitely love SMT 3 Nocturne because of the Featuring Dante badge meme. Memes can sell a game better if used right and Atlus is aware of the meme.
I really hope that this remaster does well, so we can see more SMT rereleases.
PFFFFFTTTTT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I WISH. But Atlus clearly didn't care about this game and dumped it on a small team. It's like they wanted the game to reach the same success as the original with not reaching the expected profit. I've accepted this truth.
It’s a horrible remaster, I hope this does poorly so Atlus will put in more effort in their remasters
@@nitinanku This is dumb. If this remaster does poorly this will tell Atlus to not remaster more games. Think, dude, think. It's not that hard.

Here's hoping more SMT and Persona games come to PC
All main platforms
Doubt any of them will come to PC anytime soon. Which is odd since Persona 4 Golden sold so well.
@@Vyse195 Atlus is a weird company to say the least, hell it's Sega that's been pushing to get these games multiplatform, not Atlus
@@Vyse195 well, SMT3 releasing "day 1" on PC aswell is atleast a sign that it might change in the future.
Sega really, REALLY needs to baiscally give them big pressure in that regard. All their "let's make some series stick to one for platforms for absolutely no reason" is just shit for their fanbase and makes no sense with the popularity that ATLUS has gained in the past few since, especially since Persona 5.
I also doubt that their repeated surveys did not show them that people play and want their games on all fucking platforms rather than (mainly) sticking to one, like Persona to Playstation or SMT to Nintendo (3 on PS2 was kind of an outlier).
P5 Strikers and SMT 3 HD are already a good start, but it needs to start being a tradition to release multiplatform
My favorite demon is Mothman. He’s such a goofball.
Excitedly waiting for my preordered copy to arrive this week. Always appreciate SMT and Nocturne love.
Just seeing these quotes just goes to show the type of overworking culture Japan has. Must suck when a director says "relishing the occasional days I was able to go home."
It's still weird to me how an obscure trilogy of novels would give rise to one of Japan's biggest RPG franchises, especially since I doubt the author of the original novels has any involvement with the series.
Kazuyuki Yamai did not direct Nocturne, Hashino did. Yamai only directed Maniax version.
This has to be one of my favorite videos
I just started playing the game last week. Absolutely love it. Just beat Matador and Dante a few moments ago.
It makes me so happy to see how far this has all come. I can still remember being in high school over a decade ago feeling so elusive knowing all my gaming facts I'd get off the daily updated website before it was something everyone knew about. But now the fact that everyone knows what DYKG is all about is so great in it's own way too cause there's so much knowledge for us all to share now that we wouldn't have otherwise.
Now if they could just be bothered to localize the first two
They are available on psp i think
@@gigagrave not officially, just fan translated, the first one was on iPhone and iPad, not sure why they took it off though

Man I love SMT especially since P1+2 dont get much love nowadays. Though makes me wonder what will happen on Persona 1's 25th anniversary this year? Makes me wonder if people are still looking for those SMT3 demos so they could upload them to the net. SMT > Persona, P1-3 > 4+5
I know it's never going to happen, but the dream for me has always been a ground up remake of the 2 duology, with the focus on revamping the dungeons. Dont try to shoehorn in the calendar mechanic or social links, but bring in the Once More mechanic to make general combat flow more im line with newer titles, and allow the teams to go wild creatively with interpreting the dungeons for a 3d space.
@@TheKillerStove Ah a fellow cultured P2 fan. Nice to meet a fellow fan of the older or obscured games. Honestly I would love to see a remake of 1 and 2 the duology. Though of course only bring in the press turn system from the later SMT and Persona entries, I would agree with you 100%. The social systems would be redundant since the world and its characters are already developed nicely imo. Honestly I never bothered to maxed out the social links at all in 3+4 I just dont care. Honestly at this point I would even settle for something as minimal as an anime adaption or even showing off Naoya as Persona's 2nd and final rep.
On the horizon uh? Thanks Yamai

So glad that more people get to experience this game. Tho SMT3 planted the seeds for Atlus to get more known and spawn the more known Persona 3 to 5 games. I Just wish Atlus also ported Persona 3,4,5 to switch since I missed out on those games.
Really hyped for SMT5.
"Ah yes clearly the Demifiend was influenced by the Tron serie-- uhh, I guess it was Videodrome instead."

I really hope someday Atlus would consider remaking or rebooting the first 2 SMT games or maybe the 2 Megami Tensei games with modern graphics and gameplay
Atlus: "We wanted this game to be more than just the third game in the series."
SMT5: "Guess I'm just the fifth game in the series then..."

Picked this up on day one. Game is fantastic and now I'm just wishing they'd do the same with Persona 3!
I've been wanting persona 3 to come out remastered for years I think that is still the best persona game
YEEEESSSSS
@@samuelbrannon5396 Maybe in terms of story and characters. But the gameplay is really poor. Dungeons are repetitive, batlles are unnecessarily difficult due to poor balancing and the inability to control party members, and the social links are impossible to complete in one playthrough without a guide. They barely remastered it, I'd prefer a full on remake for P3, although ig an hd port to modern consoles would be nice.

I hope Atlus one day will remaster SMT1 and 2. Honestly, I was sold when Nocturne HD was announced last year in that Nintendo Direct Mini as I was very interested in the game since I can't remember how many years (maybe since one of my friends mentioned it during one of our conversations back in... 2012 I think?), and now as I watching this video, I'm playing it on my Switch (very convenient because I can use my Switch as a "Game Boy" if I want to, as a "kind of" side comment, the game rocks, can't believe on what I missed for a long time because I didn't have a Ps2 back in the day).
I rarely buy Digital, but as I was falling asleep the other night I randomly decided to check the eShop. BOOM! SMT III: Nocturne was right there, and I had no idea it was out.
I instantly bought it & started the download, then fell asleep & still haven't played it. Don't regret my purchase 1 bit, but that's how excited I was just to have access to it again lol
