I normally hate when Disney just launches projections and lights on things to make them look "cooler", it just seems really cheap to me, but I think that they really did make this way more incredible. I personally love the stretching room and the new portraits in the hallway.

They really aren't just launching projections. Projection mapping can be hit or miss but an improved lighting package can make the world of a difference especially with dark rides

What are you talking about?? Lighting can make a complete diference when it comes to dark rides. when they add projections and lighting they are usually bringing a whole new dimension to the scene. I recommend you watch the Hogwarts light show. at the beginning when the show hasn't started yet there are still projections on the castle that make it look like the moon is shining on the castle while in reality its just projected effect.

I agree with Katie. Sometimes they add project mapping to rides and it kills the vibe of an attraction. Alice in Wonderland at Disneyland is an example. I feel like it’s too much projection, and I’d rather have the original ride back.
However for Phantom Manor, these digital enhancements really are a fantastic addition that add to the vibe of this attraction.

@@holisticcritic9267 Agreed. I remember pre-digital projections in the Magic Kingdom version and all the faces looked stretched and ridiculous. Still, this version somehow feels cheaper even though I know it must have cost a fortune for each room.

Really bummed that they removed the nod to the illustration “all is vanity”, when Melanie is looking at her reflection in the attic. It was such a fantastic image. Other than that, I love most of the changes and now the story really shines through.

Wow. When you put them side to side you can really see how much they changed. I like most of the changes. The only thing I didn’t like was the ballroom music change because the original felt more darker and sinister which fit the ride but the normal Haunted Mansion music makes it feel more like the other mansions around the world.

I think the new phantom animatronic at the end is amazing. Sad that the old story with the big thunder mountain is changed and the fact that there is too much light.
    - Change the ballroom music back
    - Make it a little darker and less colorful
    - Don't make her insane at the end, change her voice to a very sad woman who just wants to find peace again.

    • @KarstensCreationsKC
      @KarstensCreationsKC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

It was darker, but the animatronics are FAR superior and creepier...but I'm disappointed that they STILL have yet to do anything effects wise to the painting hanging in the Ballroom of the Manor itself, it's just...THERE with no reason for it to be, what a missed chance to show a skull form over the house itself, or have it go from beautiful and new to old and scary with ghosts flying around it, etc...
Other than that, VERY glad to see that they dropped he 'double Melanies' (one RIGHT before the Endless Hallway in the original version, then she is seen immediately afterwards in said hall, that never seemed right) and they changed the inexplicable 'trio of Phantoms' that used to be featured in the mirrors as the Hitchhiking Ghost effect and have now created a creepy twist, having Melanie asking you to marry her as she appears in your Doom Buggy, just like the original effect...;)

I liked her standing there and wish she had stayed. I think it was central to the story. . Yes, the original dance music from the ballroom was very speical and now it is gone sadly.. I'll always prefer the original version but I can't deny that the refurbished one is an objective improvement and a lot more guests will end up loving it this way. This is Disney making sure that next waves of visitors don't look at the rides as antiques but as contemporary, impressive and impactful attractions. The old version just wasn't doing that so I'm ok with it. But I am definitely glad we have so many excellent memories (and online video's haha) of the original.

      @ipdvb4853 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@dieganzkuhlelmao5303 Couple of reasons. I preferred the more melancholic story where the bride was trapped in her grief and her father's madness rather than being an actual crazy villain herself. The ride now blends the two narratives and it just doesn't work imo. I also think certain additions didn't really work. The static figures of the bride (in the station) and the Phantom (in the ballroom) are rather awkward to look at since they don't move an inch (like, why, when you have animatronics all over the place?), and I also don't get why they replaced the gorgeous bride animatronic at the beginning of the ride with a castle guard who's kind of unintentionally humorously shuffling around. Same with the now removed skeleton bride floating in the crystal at the end. Beautiful scenes that didn't need substitution or additions at all to me. Other changes, mostly tech upgrades, are great but yeah, the concept itself deserved a little more love and care (and money, probably) imo.

  • @runecallewaert2702
    @runecallewaert2702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

What a missed opportunity this refurbishment is.
Most people don't realize how many effects have slowly vanished and broken down over the years since opening day, thanks to the notorious French maintenance policy, that made the attraction even more of a masterpiece. Just to begin with, there used to be smoke everywhere: in the piano parlor, behind the busts in the catacombs, all over the ghost town and especially coming out of lighted cracks coming from the earthquake (which they now got rid off all together) and behind Melanie's skeleton when she points the way out; the sky in the ghost town used to have a storm effect with hellfire-like effects behind the decayed phantom, while white 'Night on Bald Mountain-esque' spirits flew all around the ghost town, disappearing towards the little manor on top of the exit (now changed to a inspiration less night sky, making the scene way more tame and unconcerned about telling a backstory); when the hitchhiking phantom disappeared from your doombuggy in the final mirror, there was a smoke and lightning effect; upon entering the loading area, flashes of lightning would make all the candles go out for a few seconds, until they lighted again out of themselves. The atmosphere, that luckily never completely left thanks to the amazing soundtrack, was even more creepy and really stayed with you for a while after exiting the ride. But even the hypnotizing soundtrack that would lead you through the manor has been cut in pieces, removing Melanie's sad singing in most parts, something that made the original so captivating. If they just would have put 100% of all these original effects back, and maybe just add new paintings and modern lighting, this refurbishment could have astonished new guest and old fans of the ride, by just digging back into and using everything there aleady used to be.
Sadly it has now become a big self-glorification of Tom Fitzgerald and his love for the american mansions and the 'innovative' Walt Disney Company, shoving their newest technology down everyone's throat, while the most successful of all the Disney Parks sits in Tokyo, which they do not own and where they maintain their rides in their original form while making sure they're technique stays in perfect condition.
So just to you, Tom, Phantom Manor is NOT the Haunted Mansion and if you didn't get that before you started this refurbishment, you just should have kept you're wicked little claws away from our beloved Ravenswood estate.

Now that I’m seeing everything side by side... I’m going to miss the old Phantom Manor, I really don’t like most of the changes. The original Phantom Manor music was way better (crossing my fingers they’ll bring it back) and I also prefer the original storyline, to me it was more chilling and tragic but that’s probably personal preference🤷🏻‍♀️ I just personally can’t with Melanie going insane... I also don’t like how they put that knight instead of Melanie, he seems kind of out of place, idk. And I think I also prefer the old stretching room paintings as well as the narration (even though I had my troubles with the French). Maybe I’ll like it after I’ve seen it in person but as of now they kinda ruined it for me.

You are completely entitled to your opinion, but do try to put the nostalgic glasses off (I did and believe me that was hard for me since I'm a DIEHARD fan of this ride).
The original organ music in the ballroom is back, so points there!
The storyline hasn't really changed much they just added and explored it a little bit. The idea of several suitors dying does make it more tragic in my opinion, like this poor woman just can't get a break. I do agree that having her being insane is a con for me, loved the idea of her being this tragic victim but now she's some sorth of evil presence in the end?
I found it sad too they moved Melanie's animatronic to the stairs instead of where they now have the knight. Loved that animatronic and now we can't see it from up close anymore.
About the stretching portraits, these ones are an immediate improvement. Why? They are much stronger in visual storytelling. I mean, what wás the deal with the old portraits? They were nice and all but what did they tell us actually? To me, as much as I loved them, they felt a bit disconnected from everything else. These new portraits are far more straight forward and tell us what happened to every man that Melanie was close to. and I LOVE the effect of melanie disappearing out of the paintings. It fits into the narrative to a T.
But the most improvement is in the lighting. The lighting in the ride is much more cooler and lighter so you can see more properly and everything feels a bit more connected. Take the skeleton lounge, the old version had colors ALL over the place and all sorts. It was overload. The new one is much more flowing, having only cool colors like blue, green and purple.

And I’m so glad the old music is back in the ballroom scene. The last scene with Melanie in the mirror is simply horrible, I don’t know how anyone could ever think that’s a good idea for the ride, especially with the audio, no just no...🤦🏻‍♀️

    Changes that I strongly dislike:
I'm not a fan of the changes to the beginning foyer (the mirror/painting); I preferred just the daughters face fading in and out (more ambigious who the killer is).[The "changing art gallery" scene in the beginning further removes all ambiguity by showing her father is the phantom]
The "hanging" scene in the ceiling/at the end of the stretching room. The phantom is looking down below and holding an empty noose. Previously he was actually in the act of hanging his daughters suitor.
I strongly dislike the new stretching room portraits for the story changes they bring. Now the bride has had multiple suitors, which essentially turns her from a victim to an accomplise, or just very clueless. Previously the portraits were vague sure, but focused on her innocence and very unfortunate luck. I preferred the simpler story with one suitor that was hung by the phantom (who may or may not have been her father).
Luckilly they've changed the ballroom music back, but I think the placement of the phantom was much better before...peering down on her.
I prefered the bride's skull mirror before...it was a memorable edgar allen poe inspired scene.
The zombie dog seems to growl instead of bark now; I liked the more aggresive bark, but he does look better.
I also dislike the hitchiking bride scene at the end, she's either trying to kill you or simply gone crazy. In the previous version she "sacrifised herself" to help you escape phantom canyon and it added to the sympathy you already felt for her as an innocent victim.
I'm relatively indifferent on the bride holdinig flowers being replaced by a knight of armor. This is because they've added her to the opening stairway scene.
I'm also pretty indifferent with the new final phantom animatronic...I maybe prefered the old scene because it showed how far the phantom was willing to go and how far from humanity he was at that point. The new animatronic, like all of the other technical improvements are cool though.
Ultimatedly, I think they botched the story. It was simple and "realistic" before, with the bride being someone you felt great sympathy for. Regardless, the aesthetics, tech and sound are objectively better now.

Fan commentary dump! Grab your popcorn, this is gonna be a long one :D
Story: I applause for what they did with the story. They did add new things to make it new and fresh yet it doesn't really contradict the lore that was already there, except for maybe the idea that Melanie had only one suitor she was increadibly fond on so much to die for when she could not find him. They changed her from a sweet tragic victim to a somewhat psychopatic ghost that lost her sanity. This is the one change in the story I'm not too keen on. I loved the idea of her being this tragic victim that even tries to help us out of the house throughout the ride (after of course showing us her story first).
The idea of several suitors is actually quite cool and the new stretching portraits are a great example of visual storytelling. As much as I loved the old portraits, let's be honest they did not really add anything to the narrative and lore. I mean, what did they tell us? The showed all kinds of misfortune for Melanie but....did those things really happen or is it just an indicator of bad things to come? If so then why these 4 scenarios? The new portraits are far more straight with what they tell. These are 4 suitors, Melanie disappears and they all tragically died. Plain and simple!
The one thing that I would have done is diving in more into the history of the house. The old version didnt do that thus making the scenes feeling a bit random at points (like the skeleton tunnel/lounge and the decaying zombie town at the end, only fans who are aware of the PM lore know the context but other people and newcomers will probably feel lost with these scenes). The new version doesn't explore this either but is just focusing on the aspect of Melanie's relationship with the phantom.
    Ride:
Let's start with the foyer. The language switches between french and english don't truely bother me as much as others apparently do. It's nice to finally have an english version, so people would understand what's going on. I like the idea of showing the room from decaying state to glory state but the color palette of green and blue caught me off guard. Weird color choice. Why not red and yellow, to give it a warm, welcoming appearance? Like how Phantom Manor used to be in it's glory days? But the portrait is a great visual effect!
The stretchingroom, what can I say? Love the new makeover! Great visual story telling here!
The loading area and portrait gallery is where I feel they missed bit of an opportunity qua storytelling. Here they really could have given some hints and bits about PM's history and the Thunder Mountain disaster! It doesn't have to spelled out or spoonfed to us, no no. But just a portrait of the Thundermountain in normal state and it's haunted state would be that it's tormented by the earthquake, could already be enough! And maybe a portrait of the Thunder Mesa people and it's haunted state would be the zombie version we see in the ride at the end! Hell, add Melanie and her parents inthere! The suitors? That would be absolutely amazing. But the new portraits as they are a nice and some cool references there. I also love the color and lighting of the loading area, particulary on the stairs, where Melanie is now standing. That used to be just purple/blue and dark but now there is so much more contrast!
Further on we move to where Melanie used to welcome us in the old version, but now they replaced her with a random knight. I feel conflicted about this. On the one hand it makes sense, since now she's to be found on the stairs and there is no need for her to be there anymore. On the other hand, I LOVED that animatronic! The idea that she was welcoming us guests in her house gave me the vibe that she was longing for normal compagny after being mocked by all those spirits that were invited in her house by the phantom. She was lonely, and wants us to accompagny her. And yes, I think she was a ghost here as well, the endless hallway reveals that to us. And let's get to the main change in the ride: Melanie and the Phantom are almost always together in 1 scene. He's in the endless hallway, he's in the mirror at the brides boudoir, and he's behind her in the ballroom scene. This gives the feel of control. He's controlling her and mocking her all around. I like that idea. It connects the scenes a bit more.
The ballroom's main change is the lighting. Everything is not only a bit more colder qua feeling but also less dark. Now you can see pretty much everything and THANK GOD by now they've switched back from the Haunted Mansion tune to the original Phantom Manor ballroom music. Thank you DIsney! Thank you for listening to us. I truely appreciate it, what were you thinking placing that music inthere?? XD
The bride's boudoir... well... too bad they removed the reference (can't come up with the name of that painting, the one with the lady and the mirror, giving it the shape of a skull). Also Melanie is no longer an old lady (wich i found a bit weird in the old version. Did she really grow old and cried about her lost groom áll the way through??? Kind of a stretch right?)
The Phantom looks pretty much the same, except the glowing eyes.
Good to see the hellhound is back. Last time i went to PM he was gone.
The skeletons look different to me, some of them. And again the lighting in the skeleton lounge is different, which is an improvement. The old version had colors áll over the place. Red, yellow, purple, green, blue etc. It felt disconnected and overload. The new version has only cold colors, mainly purple and blue and it gives way more flow in the scenery. Also is it me or do the busts look more smooth moving? Did they restorate the footage of the faces somehow? Dunno.
This is also the case with Phantom Canyon, the color palette feels more consistent and the new animatronics look dashing! And that last phantom animatronic is outstanding! How he moves, how he sounds it's incredible. That gesture he makes. Briljant replacement for the weird corpse that was there before.
Then the crystal skeleton bride scene, which aint there anymore. Too bad, I loved that effect and the idea that she was sacrificing herself to point us the way to safety. Now our 4 suitors are lying there, with 1 of them breaking free with a ... ring? Couldn't really tell.
Melanie appearing in the buggies is a nice idea but I still don't really like how malicious they've made her. I would have loved it way more if they did this effect, but instead of sounding mean and evil they could have made her sound tragic and sweet. Like she's begging us to marry her with a sad tone in her voice. Or not at all, just have her sing. I don't know, maybe it is a great improvement and is nostalgia just kicking in with me but this is a change I really have to get over.
Verdict: Bravo Disney, for your hard work on this gem of a ride! Even tho I'm not keen on every change the main result is great and ready for new generations and decennia to come!

Is there a reason they took the first Melanie animatronic away? It seems like they had nothing to replace her with, so they just put a Knight statue there...she’s the main character of the ride, so wouldn’t it make sense for her to be the first thing guests see? I haven’t gotten to ride phantom manor, but I’ve always wanted to, and her animatronic looked beautiful from all the videos I’ve seen. I don’t understand her removal.

The original 2017 and the 2019 model have both succeeded very well. Some of the "old" theming I thought was better, but much is much better lit and presented in the new version. Where with me I mean not only bright accents, but also the geist-lit ones.
A lot of things get a completely different caracter when it's illuminated elsewhere.
I also find the lord of the castle as a skeleton in the new version better since it is significantly better illuminated and the movements of the figure are significantly better adapted to the dirty laugh. The sound track for this has also become much better.
Some things that have been done better have not been much better, but you always have to see the whole picture in the modernizations and not lose sight of the corresponding Disney story.
I think even though I will miss a lot of old loves things, you have restored it well!
What would interest me again would be due data in Phantom Manor. For example, I am interested in the year of construction of the railway. 😉

I am a hard core fan of the Phantom Manor for almost 15 years but I do think the old version was truely dated in certain places and people really have to take their nostalgic glasses off to analyze the changes instead of going 'ughh I like the old version more!'. Yes, the old one had it's charm, but you know what it's glory days were for real over and Phantom Manor had to go with the current time period, so that newer generations can still enjoy this masterpiece.
Don't forget people, this ride is almost 27 years old!
A ride simply can't stay pure and original for that long, as hard as it may seem it will bore people out eventually and new generations will always look for excitement. And what was excitement and groundbreaking effects for us back in the day, those might be dated now and the new gens won't be as mesmerized by them as we were at their age. It's sad but true, I've seen it with my younger cousins. They truely didn't understand my excitement for this ride back in 2016. And they were right, most of the animatronics didn't work, the lighting was barely present, making the ride far too dark in certain places, the french audio didn't help for they don't understood what was going on qua story, and the doombuggies kept making noises during the ride which took us out of the experience.
Phantom Manor was my great obsession. My 13 year old me couldn't get enough of this and I treasure my first experience of PM dearly. But 10 years later I returned and really it wasn't as magical as I remembered as a kid. Maybe it's adulthood doing that but you will never experience something again the way you did as a kid.
That's why it's important to treasure nostalgia but don't let it cloud your better judgement. The old version of PM will always stay with me but the new PM is also a wonderfull upgrade and ready for new gens.
If you prefer the old version because of good arguments I can understand, but don't hate on the new version simply because it's new. That's stupid.

Your right this ride is probably my favorite version of the haunted mansion but the only change that is really difficult to accept is the removal of the Melanie skeleton showing you the way out and replacing it with making her evil I feel like Melanie should’ve kept her old character representing the innocence and purity of her heart The new version was not bad I liked it but I feel like that change was too drastic because the skeleton pointing out adds a unique story to the bride in all the other haunted mansions the bride is evil but I wish this wasn’t the case what do you think ?

The original story was about Melanie Ravenswood, daughter to Henry, the richest man in the town of Thunder Mesa. He made a fortune off of mining deep into Big Thunder Mountain despite the natives' warning that it would awaken the dangerous mythical thunderbird and would curse him and the town. Melanie fell in love with a train conductor who planned to move away from Thunder Mesa and take Melanie with him. To Henry it was a double blow to his pride and he vowed he would do whatever it took to stop the wedding. Before he could however, a massive earthquake caused by too much mining struck the town. Henry's wife was killed and apparently he was too. The wedding seemed destined to go on unchallenged...or so Melanie thought. On her wedding day she waited and waited for her groom to come but he never did. Little did she know he was lured up to the attic and killed by a mysterious figure who referred to himself as the Phantom and hung him from the rafters. Melanie kept on waiting, even as the wedding guests departed, the cake rotted away, and she herself grew old. The Phantom, who may or may not be the vengeful spirit of Henry Ranvenswood, filled the manor with ghastly spirits and continued to torment Melanie as she waited in vain for the wedding day that would never come.
As you travel through the original Phantom Manor, Melanie's spirit does everything in her power to prevent you from falling into the clutches of the Phantom. She greets you as you enter, wards you away from the endless hallway, but loses sight of you as she realizes how old and alone she is and weeps before her mirror, recreating the famous "All is Vanity" image. The Phantom pushes you into an open grave leading to the underworld and a twisted version of Thunder Mesa called Phantom Canyon. He intends to trap you there forever as he reveals his true form (a rotting zombie) and mockingly points towards an open casket intended for you. But Melanie returns in her corporeal form, now as a skeleton in a tattered wedding dress, to point the way to safety through some crystal caverns. The cavern leads you to the wine cellar of the manor, but the Phantom makes one last attempt at dragging your doom buggy back to the land of the dead.

I think the final phantom was supposed to show him in his actual current state which was a form of decay. And as for not being able to see stuff, it could be most of the potato cams that film it.

Even if the narrative plot of the deadly bride collecting pretendants is more clear, I absolutely dislike the refurbishment.
New intro, paintings (if we can call digitally-made-illustrations paintings), soundscapes, paintings, even the music. Everything is wrong and it wastes the eerie strangeness and nostalgic B-movie atmosphere. But nothing kills more the gothic atmosphere than these new LED based lights. Darkness and feeble flickness of a candlelight are gone.
This attraction had its special charm from 25 years by its old-school flavor. Maybe “dusty”. But who seriously cares about the dust here ? (Figuratively speaking)
It was like entering into a golden-age movie . Sadly it is gone.
    RIP Old Phantom Manor.

    • @Relonnor
      @Relonnor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

When I criticize the LED lights, I precise the new blue green and purple lightscape. Killing the eerie
I don’t want either the return of feeble incandescent bulbs for candlelights. But you can now reconstruct those warm colors with last generation LED.
It’s all a question of atmosphere. Wish for more darkness, and looking for a flicking glow.

I’m also happy that the first room you enter upon arrival actually serves some kind of purpose to the story now.
it’s always so rushed / often skipped and now it adds something extra to the storyline and ambience of the whole attraction! can’t wait to ride it in two weeks 💛

The original felt gritty and unique. While I enjoy a lot of the new aspects in the revamp, I think some of the atmosphere was lost trying to make it different. The biggest losses for me are the ballroom music and the Melanie animatronic at the beginning.

At the risk of looking dumb - the general consensus I'm getting is that in this version, Melanie ends up going crazy/is more of a villian-ish character. Can someone explain to me where they're picking this up from the ride? I feel so blind but I'm missing where that is.
