    I thought it was interesting how each suitor was a rich and powerful businessman, and they all looked older than Melanie in the stretching room portraits, so here's how I would've done the story: Melanie didn't actually feel anything for any of the four suitors, but such a thing didn't matter to Henry, who saw his daughter as a business opportunity. For each suitor, he'd have Melanie marry him as part of a business deal, then once the marriage was consummated, he'd have the new husband killed under 'mysterious' circumstances so he could claim the company assets for himself, before having Melanie move on to the next one. The reason he'd be against her marrying Jake would be for two reasons. One, he was a working class civilian, and two, after the wedding ceremony, they'd leave Thunder Mesa, which to a control freak like Henry, would be unacceptable.

    I'm not sure if I like how Phantom Manor was modified to be a little more like the Haunted Mansion because it takes away a bit of what helped Phantom Manor stand out from the rest in that it felt more like a Edger Allen Poe story rather then the more family friendly take that we have in the USA. Doesn't help that Melanie's role here now doesn't have the same importance and tragedy the original had. That being said things like the Vincent Price voice over is very welcomed. :)

    • @LEWIS1992
      @LEWIS1992 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's still not the full Vincent Price narration though, it's kinda a hack-and-slashed version of it. For example, the line about a "disquieting metamophosis" that was designed for the art gallery part is now used for the stretching portraits section, which is weird considering he already recorded a line about the stretching portraits.
      We need to have the full 1992 Vincent Price narration back, I think.

    I miss the old story. I liked the idea that the Phantom killed her husband and Melanie keeps getting older and older until you ultimately see that she has withered away to a skeleton. I also don’t like that in scenes like the ballroom and endless hallway that he is just standing there, non-threateningly. It was cooler in the ballroom when he was watching from the window.
    I do like a lot of the new effects though.

    • @katziliaf
      @katziliaf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Same.
      I liked the fact that
      1) you were never quiet sure if the phantom is or is not the father of the bride till the end.
      Now, with the phantom being put in nearly every scene, it's either "So...the dad is basically a violent poltergeist...ain't that original" or (and this is a quote from a friend of my I absolutley adore) "Jesus Christ what a stalker. That's her dad? Shit, I'm getting some major incest vibes right now..."
      2)you could basically see how Henry Ravenswood lost himself in his anger.
      This is mostly focused on the last animatronic, which shows him as a rotting corpse that (how Fastpass Facts correctly said themself:) "lost any kind of humanity he may have had before".
      Now, it's just the same Phantom animatronic you get spammed with through the entire whole ride.
      It's like a Hitchcock film: Sometimes a little bit less is a little bit better.
      3) Melanies story was much more sadder.
      And I mean both; backstory AND her role in the manor.
      In the original backstory, we all know, Melanie fell in love with a train engineer called Jake.
      This caused Henry Ravenswood to lose himself in great anger, which later -when he became the phantom- turned into a weird sadistic form of humor, as if Ravenswood was trying to "punish" his daughter as if she was a child.
      Like...it's not like he _just kills_ the Miner in some cruel way -no, he hangs him quietly, which causes Melanie to search for her lover for all enternity.
      This (of course) also doesn't instantly kill her (like, dropping down some stairs in the dress), but turns her slowly into a shadow of herself, as she slowly descends into madness (like...she still sits in her dress as an old lady infront of a mirror foreshadowing her doom).
      She was basically a sad character, which you felt sympahty for, and while I don't know exactly if she "sacrifices her soul" per se, it was obvious she tried to somehow help the "visitors" to escape. This "I can't go, but I won't let him take you" is both extremly sweet and sad.
      Now, Melanies role is...eh.
      Can't describe it better as that; Eh.
      Like...instead of one lover (Jake) she now has 5.
      Okay like...alright. Nothing against people who have the ability to move on (really; I'm happy for you :-) ), but the fact that she didn't seem to age in the pictures made her persona feel more like one that...you know...not is directly "needy", but someone who...doesn't really care? Can you say it like that?
      I mean...yeah, she started to believe that she was cursed, but...why would she then plan to marry Jake?
      It just...feels all so unnatural...though this might only be me of course.
      Also...the end.
      Oh god. What did they do to the end?!
      If it would be the bride from the Haunted Mansion that would say in a (sarcastic tone) "Marry me?" followed by a dark laughter, I'd be like "Oh yeah, that fits!" (y'know, bcause she killed her husbands for their wealth), but Melanie?
      I mean...Melanie is supposed to be the one who died of a "broken-yet-faithful heart" and who searched for her fiancée all live long.
      ...so why the question "Would you marry me?"
      Like...why?
      There is no sense in this!

    • @KassMcCormack
      @KassMcCormack 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      katziliaf This! All of this! These are exactly the problems I have with the new version! Melanie is no longer a sympathetic character. Instead it feels almost as if she somehow knew what her father was doing and willingly played a part in it. She went from victim to acomplice and her asking us to marry her in the end feels like we've become the next targets for a pair of serial killers. It went from being a tragic story of love and loss to something more like a cross between and episode of Supernatural and Criminal Minds. I'm all for updating special effects and animatronics (the ghost town and the foyer look amazing) but not at the expense of a great story.

      Same. This version makes her dad look like an insane psycho and an even bigger bastard. No guy was good enough for his daughter so made sure she spent her life and afterlife alone.
      I also hate what they did to Melanie. Now instead of helping the rider find their way out of the manor the psychoticaly asks anyone and everyone if they will marry her. Sad.

    • @princesslily0105
      @princesslily0105 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I loved the original plot a lot more than this. Seeing the change the bride now it's like an accomplice of the Phantom because she knows that his father is the killer but she still asked the guest to marry her at the end instead of saving them :(

    • @KassMcCormack
      @KassMcCormack 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@princesslily0105 Exactly! Like in the original it was just the one guy and as soon as Melanie realized what was happening she sacrificed herself to save us. Now there's multiple suitors who died in strange ways and there's no way she didn't figure it out at some point. And to make it worse the staging throughout the ride of always having the Phantom standing behind her in every scene makes me think of a proud father and his murderous daughter. They ruined a beautiful story with one of the most sympathetic characters in any Disney park!

    There's lots to like (especially the return of the Vincent Price narration) but I feel like by adding the additional suitors, they were trying to make Melanie into a more sympathetic version of Constance when the story of the single suitor was more Melanie's own...but that's really my only issue.

    • @deltawolf7766
      @deltawolf7766 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      True but in away Constance wanted the men for their money and dispatched them herself like a one trick pony. In Melanie's case, she was unaware of her suitor's true fates and was probably lead on to believe them as mere accidents by her overbearing father who did it.

  • @TheLastAngelus
    @TheLastAngelus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    I had a different sense in the story in comparison to everyone else. I do understand everyone’s point but Melanie definitely not like Constance and even with the extra suitors added, to me it made her story sound even more tragic. How I saw it was her first suitor actually wasn’t Jake it must of been one of the other four being shown in the portraits. Yet moving on from that, the manor itself was seeing some bad times as Henry built the manor on top of Boot Hill where many of the natives said that disturbing the mountain would cause a powerful spirit, The Thunderbird, to wreak havoc on whoever messed with said mountain. Yet Henry didn’t listen and proceeded ahead with the construction. As Melanie grew up into a beautiful young woman she met with four suitors who in all met there own grizzly fate. By taking in that information, to me Melanie already felt lonely and that her life would just be filled with loneliness to never find a lover ever again. After losing all those men, any woman would be depressed and would be searching for someone who could finally take her hand and leave the horrible memories of each suitor dying in unfortunate events. There comes Jake, the train engineer, who seemingly seemed liked the perfect man for her giving the circumstances that befell her. She fell in love and so did he wanting to take her away from there of course the father, Henry, wasn’t okay with it and tried his hardest to separate the two but it was for not as an earthquake hit taking Henry and his wife with it. And of course as the story goes, on the wedding day Jake was lured away and hung up in the attic in silence. Melanie frantically searching for her love to no avail waited for him while slowly being consumed by her fathers laughter and madness but still waiting for her lover to return back into her arms. I felt that the presence of the father being shown everywhere didn’t bother me at all it showed that no matter what, Melanie will forever be haunted by her overprotective father pushing everyone away from his beloved daughter to the point where he himself would be trying to put your neck around a noose as well.
    That’s how the story was depicted to me and nothing like Constance since she was a woman who just wanted inheritance and murdered all the men by cutting there head off. Melanie’s felt more tragic in my eyes, even with the extra suitors it felt like it was a desperate plea for love and that happy ending that she dreamed of but never got to cake since her father had taken that away from her.

      @@j.j.q1379 That still does not justify her action's in the final scenes (Crypt, the mirror's). by vilifying her in those last moments (instead of guiding the riders to the exit like in the original), it confuses rider's by somehow matching her alignment with the phantom, questioning if she was supposed to be sympathetic in the first place. (i get that its supposed to be her father in this version... but it now reeks of Stockholm syndrome by a abusive parent rather than terrorized by a menace who may not be even human.) . Is she on his side? if so, why does she still look Miserable in the ballroom and boudoir scenes? Compare that to the original, where it was clear she was innocent and pure, having been forced to wait for a groom to never come and terrorized by a malicious entity(the fact that they confirmed and revealed the phantom's identity so early on in the portrait gallery before THE RIDERS EVEN DISEMBARK.... UGH) for the end of time. You cant have a cake and eat it too: With the ride being so short as it is, you need simplicity: As it is, it reeks of mood whiplash.

    The stretching room portraits make more sense, but the fact Melanie was able to get over the death of each suitor in turn does take away some of the pathos.
    By the way, the new version of the story bears some resemblance to Tobit 3:8, with the Phantom taking on the role of Asmodeus. France is still a nominally Catholic country, so those who are biblically literate should recognize the similarities (and the differences).

    When I was on phantom manor the ride broke down when my cart had got to the ballroom scene. At first, they covered it up by saying that the spirits were playing with the carts and the tour would resume shortly. But then all the lights came up and you could clearly see how all of the effects were done. We waited for about ten minutes until a cast member came out and told us we needed to evacuate the attraction. We had to walk through the rest of the manor and I was at the back of the queue with a cast member behind me and as we walked past things she pointed out all the hidden Mickeys to me. What amazed me though was that even though the rest of the ride had shut down the animatronics were working perfectly fine. It was honestly quite incredible just walking through the manor and seeing the detail you wouldn't have even noticed when the lights were off. But in the end, it was all fine because we got a fast pass and went back on it later and it didn't break down but it was weird looking at everything and just thinking "I know how they did that,".

    All of these new super advanced effects are awesome, but a great part of the manor's atmosphere was due to how run down and abandoned it looked, like it wasn't an attraction or part of the park at all. It felt real. Also, the less detailed and more mysterious storyline of the previous version was way better and more romantic and melancholic in my opinion. It just felt darker, scarier and way more realistic. I feel it was considerably more immersive, wich is completely ruined by having goddamn Mickey Mouse, or even Jack at the entrance the whole year. The new version just seems a lot less serious and more colorful and goofy ( no pun intended ). They very clearly "Haunted Mansion-ified" it, and I feel Phantom Manor was greatly superior to its american counterpart as it was prior to the refurbishment. I would certainly keep most of the new special effects and improvements, but I would also most definitely have kept the original story, tone, theming, lighting, atmosphere, etc... intact.

The hellish sunset and glowing cracks from the earthquake (if you notice, the cracks aren’t there anymore, or at least are no longer glowing, kinda hard to tell with the footage) made a really neat and frightening scene of a nightmarish, twisted alternate dimension of Thunder Mesa. Like it was an entirely different world. Now, with the exception of the mayor taking his head off, it pretty much looks like a generic wild west scene, and it just isn't as scary. :-/ Other than those two things, I'm good with the other changes.

Because Phantom Manor is all about timing, at the start of the attraction you see Melanie as a young woman and going through the ride you see her become a old woman and soon a ghost! But if the ride is about time why do we see a skeleton Phantom first and a decaying corpse later. If this was real we would see the rotting corpse first then the skeleton later when all his flesh is gone. If it were up to me I think when we see the phantom in the endless hallway he should look more human/cadaver like like Henry Ravenswood. In the ballroom his flesh begins to rot and in the graveyard his skin is very rotted like the finale scene. And in the final western scene is the time we should see the Phantom’s full skeleton form.

      I think its to imply the phantom was Henry Ravenswood because why else would he be just a rotting corpse?

      The reason is because throughout the ride we are seeing his Ghost, the phantom. Hes not Really there.
      Until finally at the end we see him standing in his own coffin, we Finally truly see the phantom in all his dessicated glory and cackling at the madness around him in this hellish nightmare he has created for melanie as we try to escape

    Like some of the changes, some of the others are a bit iffy. I'm a bit sad that I'll never get to see the original. I was supposed to see it last year, but it closed right around the time I'd planned my trip (Which had been planned before the referb was announced).

    MARTHAAAAA!!!
    Also I never understood the decaying phantom, like was he regaining life through melanie’s suffering? Idk it was never explained and it always irked me. And on another quick note, the Flying Dutchman painting appears to be the same one from the pirates movies, if you look closely at the hull and body of the ship. Idk, seems like it to me. ANOTHER quick note, the scene around the pianist isn’t actually a wedding theme, it’s a funeral for all 4 of the men at the same time, which continues the theme of the Phantom mocking Melanie

    Fun fact!
    The version of the "Flying Dutchman" painting in the phantom manor is actually a nod to Pirates of the Caribbean.
    Despite the fact that the painting in general resembles its origional design, the "Flying Dutchman" ship in the painting
    is based on the ship of the same name from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

    Great video! 3 things worth mentioning are that the initial portrait has for hearts carved into the tree (backstory) as well as the noose (foreshadowing). The knight/cowboy also has a herd of ghostly cattle in it (perhaps a nod to "Ghost Riders in the Sky"). Finally, and I'm not sure about this one, but it looks like the cheating Duelist is Henry himself.

    As much as I love Phantom Manor, I'm not a fan of the new story, the original was more tragic and sad as she spent her days looking for her groom and ends up saving us from the Phantom and you never REALLLYYY knew who the Phantom was, now it's out right The Phantom is her dad and he now chases her around taunting her till you see in the mirror that she's finally broken and gone mad and is now just asking the first person she sees (the rider) to marry them

    The ride looks incredible but the the regularity of the Phantom's presence behind Melanie is really hamfisted.
    1 - It's wayyy too often and doesn't convey new information each time he pops up. Which is lazy.
    2 - I'm sorry to go there but it screams bad touch. It may be for my personal reasons but never leaving her alone isn't over protective dad. It borders on all the wrong creepy. Fine if that's what they secretly were going for but based on what I seen it's short sightedness on the imagineer part.

    I completely understand people's qualms with the story change. However, I think it was an okay idea to sort of make the Phantom Manor more unified with the other mansions' plot (Constance). Disney tries to keep things similar so that you get similar experiences regardless of the park you go to, and they achieved that with this story alteration. The only reason why Mystic Manor gets to be so different is because of culture, but Disneyland Paris doesn't have that obstacle. So making it similar in story to the other parks is fine, I think. It's still unique enough for Paris to call it their own mansion.

    When they say the tomb is opened from the inside (of the tomb) he’s actually incorrect as if you look closely at the lines of claudes tomb the cracks indicate that the tomb was opened from the outside. If it was from the inside the cracks would be different and the rubble still attached to the tomb would be more forward then inward

    I am so attached to the original. It loses its Victorian gothic influence and seems a little kitschier now. I’m biased because I was obsessed with this ride in middle school because I loved Victorian Gothic literature 🥺 it’s an oh well for me. I miss the old storm effect and the old phantom-adding fluidity to his movements and lighting him better takes away the mystery. But the lack of the pointing bride hurts. It’s one of the most visceral and surreal things ever in a Disney Park. If I had to be traumatized by it as a child, so do u :’)

    Apart from 2 or 3 effects, everything was better in the original version. Plot, lightnings and general aesthetics. Now it's too bright, too colorful, and paintings are a bit too "modern". Less haunting, less frightening, less romantic, less timeless. The world is more and more in the "pop culture" and less and less in the classic aesthetics. This evolution in Phantom/Manor just follows the trend, and Disneyland Paris in general looked way "classier" in the 90s and 2000s than now (O'poor "New York hotel", now being an ugly "Marvel" Tower).
