15:02 The Ford Pinto was actually much worse because this was one of those times when the company weighed the cost to recall and repair the defect vs the price of human lives lost. They decided that the price of human lives was not worth the cost to repair so they chose to ignore the safety concern.

Tylenol's reaction to the tampering situation is specifically what saved it, in the end. Wasting no time with recalls, swiftly designing tamper-evident packaging, etc. The tampering, in and of itself, wasn't their fault, but they acted swiftly to deter tampering and make it very evident if something had been tampered with in its packaging, after that scandal. The copycat ones that killed others didn't help (such as the excedrin tampering).

They recalled 8 million gallons of ice cream, shut down production for over two months, killed 3 and ordered to pay 17.25 mm in criminal penalties. I loved my Easy Bake Oven! I got mine in 1974 for Christmas when I was 5. I used it for years and never had a problem. I got one for my son when he was 5 and he used it with no problems for years. Don't blame the oven, blame the parents who aren't supervising their use! I had a friend who worked for Sony during the battery fiasco. Customer service was originally instructed to inform people that they must have a counterfeit battery because there was no way their own batteries were causing the problem. They finally had to take the blame when other agencies got in on it because of the number of cases.

I think the first reply here was meant to be a comment outside of this thread. The blinds were the following entry.
I can see the issue with the carrier; it shouldn't have that elastic around it, which made the design even worse than if it didn't have it. Also, if the carrier is going to be in a sling style, it should be made in a way it's always held open and doesn't close. That design makes a good bag for inanimate objects and not living babies, though.

15:02 - the Ford Pinto case was way more evil than you depict it here:
In the Ford Pinto case, the company famously faced a cost-benefit analysis regarding whether to implement a safety retrofit for the fuel tank design, which had a risk of catching fire in rear-end collisions. Ford estimated that it would cost $11 per vehicle to fix the problem, amounting to a total of about $137 million to retrofit all affected cars.
On the other side of the analysis, Ford estimated the cost of settlements for potential injuries and deaths. They projected that it would cost approximately $49.5 million for deaths, injuries, and car damages resulting from the faulty design.
Ultimately, Ford decided against the retrofit, as their analysis suggested that the cost of settlements ($49.5 million) was less than the cost of the retrofit ($137 million). However, this decision led to a significant public backlash and legal consequences.
In terms of actual monetary damages paid, Ford faced multiple lawsuits and settlements:
    - In one notable case, a jury awarded a $125 million judgment against Ford in 1978, which was later reduced to $3.5 million.
    - Another significant case in 1979 led to a jury awarding $6.6 million to the family of a person who died in a Pinto crash.
The total amount Ford paid due to the Pinto case is not precisely documented as a single figure, as it includes various settlements, fines, and legal fees over the years. However, the costs were substantial, both financially and reputationally.

And since apparently Toyota doesn't seem to learn, the gas pedal recall makes me wish Camery models within a certain year range to be recalled for faulty safety features causing unsafe driving actions. I wish I was joking when I say that the last time I was ever in a Camery that had automatic transmission and said safety features, the piece of crap tried to make me and the person I was riding with at the time hit the side of a flatbed truck when it swerved by itself. That GM situation is uncannily like the situation with the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 cargo door in the early 1970's. Not only were there two incidents, one of which was fatal, where the cargo door on a DC-10 had blown out due to not being properly locked, but while the aircraft was still under development, the door design failed during a pressure test, two years before the first incident. The fundamental design of the door remained unchanged, leading ultimately to one of the biggest settlements in Aviation history. The company paid out $80,000,000 (roughly $510,000,000 in 2024 values) in damages. Not only did this have an affect on McDonnell Douglas from a profit perspective, not as many commercial DC-10's were sold as they'd first hoped, but also played a part in the company ultimately being bought by Boeing in 1996

Like if an injury happens, because of what should be reasonably tested and shown to need updated, then they should be required to pay for the full price of the medical bills and any other problems caused from that injury.

28:58 - according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health agencies, air pollution caused by the emissions from cars leads to 7 million premature deaths each year.
This isn't counting in those people who suffer from illnesses like cancer and pneumonia caused by the chemicals emitted by cars.
Abd we don't even tackle the environmental impact, the impact on facades and other human builds as well as on rhe asphajts on the streets which gets damaged severely by these chemicals.
Quite frankly I believe that the majoruty if humans don't even realize that these chemicals gets emitted unfiltered everywhere...and since children and pet animals that people take out fir a walk are smaller... they are affected even more.
The most evil thing about that is that that until now the medical community sokd ut as something genetically inherited when somebody got sick from these emitted chemicals.
Have a nice walk next to all these outdated internal comvustion engine cars. Tip: lift your children and pets up while doing so. Not the ultimate solution - but decreases the probabiluty of them getting sick a little bit. 😏

It's really such an unfortunate thing as it solved a problem so many pregnant mothers had of debilitating nausea, but had terrible effects on the babies.
But again, at the time, it was the most effective treatment for 'morning sickness' and they just didn't know until they knew.
Pretty cautionary for any medication, TBH.

I feel like Sanlu (until they tried to cover it up) didn't know the network of farmers they use (which they own) to cut costs came to the conclusion of using melamine to falsely boost protien numbers. Those farmers (which used to be a Co-Op before Sanlu became too big [they used to be a farm in that coop] and bought the others causing it to not be that anymore) became sketchy to save money. The tests that were used to test for contaminants weren't stringent enough (the tests used by the testing agency used by Sanlu) to catch the melamine contamination.
There's videos that cover this in better detail than a countdown.
Yep, the Note 7 was really a catastrophe since there was a "crossed wires" situation with the batteries twice (I'm guessing the second battery maker also made the batteries too big for the phone), when the battery stock was supposed to be slightly smaller than the battery compartment of the phone rather than attempting to squeeze the maximum battery dimensions out of the compartment. I feel like the arrangement for the new battery maker was to make the battery smaller than the compartment, but someone likely sabotaged the correction (whether purposely or accidentally) and sent the wrong battery design document.

The Tylenol recall should not be listed here. They did nothing wrong. Their product was vandalized. It wasn't wilful or deliberate ignorance on their part. You can't say, they should have known. You'd have to go back many decades and say packaging was unsafe from the start.

    • @fashiondiva6972
      @fashiondiva6972 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You seem not to grasp that Tylenol as manufacturer failed to produce and distribute a tamper proof product. It was a design flaw in packaging no different than cheap corners cut by car manufacturers that result in recalls eventually. I know an unfortunate amount about products liability having done document review (as a law student 31 years ago taking short work while waiting to reenter the military) for the Ford Explorer rollover class action. So I feel reasonably confident in my assessment of the validity of the charge of gross negligence (by design and/or manufacture). And that makes the recall far more than just appropriate to include in this video.

@@fashiondiva6972 You can't blame Tylenol for no tamper proofing. The idea was never thought of for any manufacture prior to the incident. It wasn't until the 1983 law that came after the tampering was it mandated consumable products be tamper proof and tampering of such goods would be a felony.
