    Hey Kaulin
    On the Unimog: That engine is one of the best engines Mercedes ever made, certainly at its period.
    One wants such a Unimog for the vintage original package. They are rare in the US.
    Breaking one by putting a cummins in is a sacrileg.
    Cheers from Germany

    • @terrywarner8657
      @terrywarner8657 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Ditto. The Unimog is a specialty European vehicle. Don't think it is anything like a North American truck. Please! Leave it alone. Let it go to someone who has the time and energy to treat it right.

    • @kurtloptien185
      @kurtloptien185 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I have to agree with the others, don't change the engine in the Unimog. They are unique vehicles and are configured for many possibilities. They even made a flatbed wrecker Unimog. The rear wheels move outward and the bed tilts down. I think only used in Europe. Yes if you're restoing, no if modifying.

    • @deadbrother5355
      @deadbrother5355 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can see this one either way. If you want the factory original package, keep it stock. If not, put a Cummins or whatever fits and/or works. Its better to have it working and being enjoyed than sitting and rotting. So whichever method someone applies to achieve that is better than the alternative.

      I'm a fan of both OEM+ and the bodged together awesomeness that these folk specialise in.
      That said, if you're replacing everything and just going for the looks of something rare, pick a non-runner with the floor rotted out.. body swap will cut most of it anyway.😅

      @@dzzope fair point, but I would argue a runner is a quicker swap-to-run turnaround. But it doesn't matter to me either way.

    Hello, We for more than 30 years ago had a 1987 mod Unimog with crane. A very impressing truck/tractor, but we was much more satisfied and impressed of our little MAN 4x4 truck with short wheelbase, a vehicle which could go "everywhere" with single rear wheels, locker front and rear, winch in the crane, front and rear on the truck, alu tipper box and 12.500 pounds of payload, and could tow a 35.000 pounds trailer. For us that was the right tool for the job, and for us the little MAN truck was a better machin than the Unimog, but you are so clever in building up your own vehicles and will guaranteed be able to build up an impressing and stylish machine from that old Unimog. As disabled and bedridden I'm no longer able to do anything myself, but I'm looking forward to see your new Unimog project. Good luck guys😊.

    • @MattsAwesomeStuff
      @MattsAwesomeStuff 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Except that he's wrong. *"Weld through Primer" is neither weld through, nor primer.* It should be called "Conductive Paint for touching sheets of metal." It only helps for using when you are spot welding (two sheets stuck face to face), when you can't use normal paint (which isn't conductive, and spot welding doesn't have an arc, so it wouldn't work unless the surfaces are conductive), and when you obviously can't paint the area afterwards (the sheets are flat against each other). It does not work as primer, it's gummy and paint will not stick to it. It is not something you weld through with an arc welder, because it's zinc and the zinc contaminates and ruins the weld and makes it shatter later.

    • @CarswithNash
      @CarswithNash 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    When trying to align two pieces with holes to insert a bolt, take a tip from structural steel iron workers. Use a "spud" wrench. It has a regular open end wrench (or crescent wrench) on one end and the other end is a round long taper to a point. You insert the taper into the two holes and wiggle it while pushing in until it seats with both holes aligned. Withdraw the spud wrench and insert the bolt. Easy peasy.

    Katelyn found the biggest flaw on a hand drill - your hand is offset from the axis of the drillbit. Impart the drilling force by pushing directly on the back side of the motor and only use the handle to hold up the weight of the drill. That drillbit should not wobble, otherwise it will break sooner or later.

      When I was watching that I was thinking that is going to break any second now, then snap. But it's alright, we all make mistakes, the important part is that we learn from those mistakes.

    • @JGuraan
      @JGuraan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

      And something I didn't learn til I started machining is that drill bit speed is not correlated to removal rate. Your speed is actually inversely proportional to the amount of material you're trying to remove per rotation. If you're not getting any material removal, you should slow down, not speed up, and if it's catching or binding, then you need more speed, not less. The monkey part of the brain gets confused by that.

      Best time to learn how to drill smaller holes like that is in a place it won't matter if the drill breaks and there's no finished paint to scratch. When that's not possible, help a personl out and teach them the right way.

    Zero objections to hammering U-joints. I’ve done probably 100 of them, if not more, hammering every single one together and I’ve never had an issue. You just have to make sure the needle bearings are aligned and the cross partially engaged before hammering. Once everything is assembled you smack the ears of the yoke which settles everything and they’re smooth as butter.

    For the fuel floater, you should easily be able to get the same size steel/aluminum rod and bend it a little longer so you can get it in there at an angle. Pretty much extend it passed the bottom and bend it there. Problem solved. Fuel gauge will work perfectly!

    • @jimyeats
      @jimyeats 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The issue wasn’t that they couldn’t get it in the tank, it’s that the tank shape doesn’t allow it to extend up or down. If you bend it so that the float is angled like an ‘L’ and it’s running the length of the tank it will then be trying to pivot, as opposed to actually lifting. If you try and extend the float down and then over under the tank there isn’t enough room at the bottom of the tank to lift, as the bottom of the tank is quite thin.

    Just for the sake of pointing out (since most people know it) you do want to have some bend between your drive shaft entry point and drive shaft exit point, because the rollers inside need to work, otherwise, if they're perfectly flat, they end up digging into the same spot with tension and they eventually become loose. Not the case here, because there is some H difference between point A and B, if one were to make a perfectly straight shaft, one should use coupler joints (the star type that are joined by a rubber star) rather than the common U joint. You'd only need one and it would last for decades before it would ever need any sort of maintenance (especially with modern rubber compounds).

    when i worked on custom semis i found it was easier to use those red plastic cups you have, for bolts and just make a label with masking tape. the cups can be stacked and you can have them neatly organized in a cardboard box. then for next project you just put a new piece of masking tape over the old and mark what its for. they last surprisingly long time before the cups tear.

    I owned a U1700L38 Australian military unimog for about 3 years, just recently. They are a good vehicle, but need parts that are expensive (mine was in very good road registered condition however), so when I say parts, I mean aftermarket parts to make them better, better wheels and tires, different gearing and possibly gearboxes (all depending on what you want to do with it).
    Really, they shine at having weight on them offroad, but, the beds are also short, so not all THAT useful for recovery (I mean, they are, but not for big american pickups) - they're also very high and very wide.
    Honestly, I'd forget the relics and if you were genuinely interested in one, look for something like a U1700, everything is stronger on them, much bigger portals and axles etc.
    Much better platform to begin with.
    Even with all that in mind though, the wrecker is really better in almost every way, it would only be worse in the event you need an actual bed.

    I'd hate to see you guys eating through Ujpints, so put some angle on the dangle before you seal it all up in there like King Tut and end up with a driveshaft swinging around!
