It doesn’t work like that. More traction you get from putting whole weight on back. Check 0-100 m5 vs m5 competition. M5 is a bit quicker bc of more comfortable suspension, whole weight goes to rear tires and it grips
@@Inpushkin228 this is generally true, but the Audi is AWD and will benefit from more weight staying on the front wheels. If you have no front weight, no benefit to AWD in drag race.
Mad respect. I've owned performance versions of both and currently in a 23' BMW X3 M40i - BMW seems to offer up a bit more power and grit between the two brands. BMW is definitely underrated when it comes to power.

£85k is a lot for a 3 Series but in estate form I reckon the M3 makes a good case for being the best all-round car on sale right now. Great chassis, it's bloody quick with all the performance you really ever need from a performance car, it has top-notch interior quality and it's got ample space for the family and the dogs.
Finally rollout Sport Mode on Automatic mode from gearbox and not just always Comfort mode on Automatic only 🙏🔥 That was the only thing missing in your videos. To see the different performance from the gearbox on a race. Thanks Matt 💪
I love the M3 but have to disagree on the ZF. I hate it. It has better software in the M3 than in the M5 but it still reacts so slowly in manual mode in upshifts. With the DCT the M3 would be perfect imo. In normal driving the ZF is great.
It's also worth mentioning their heavily improved launch control systems compared to the F generation. Remember how many difficulties the last-gen M4 had when launching? Then I remember seeing the Z4, which I believe was the first G performance car (I might be wrong, didn't look it up) which launched very consistently every time. Then came the M3 RWD which launched better than anyone expected for a RWD car.
The BMW M models have battery-powered assist which is adding power to the engine. The engine and the gearbox themselves are not putting out technological breakthrough it's the battery, like a hybrid. That is why it's giving you the feel the car is so instantaneously responsive no matter what gear you are in.
@@7ludi God told me. But if you search around you will be able to find out that these cars have battery-powered assist, not whole lot of power, but enough to make the car go substantially faster. The BMW set their own rules on what's considered "official hybrid" and what's not. I think you have to use so many battery cells to be qualified as "hybrid" but these M models (including the M340i, M550i, X3M, X5M, etc) have battery power to make them go faster. Those engines and gear boxes are not technological breakthrough it's the battery helping them.
@@noobz5056 So you are making stuff up. There are some models like M340i, X5 M60i or similar that have 48V mild hybrid system that can boost up to around 10hp (so not that much) but they were fast already before they added that. But some of the extra power is also offset by the extra weight of the mild hybrid system so it doesn't make a significant difference. The M3/4 as well as M5, M8 do not have such a system! They just have a optimized engine mapping during launch control to ensure maximum power output and the hard launches are possible thanks to lockup clutch of the ZF8 speed transmission.
@@nitschi RS1/RS2 in the RS6 is only preconfigured driving modes in the car. BMW m-models lets you pick a stage between 1-3 for how fast/hard the gearbox should shift.
@@TheFrankybody the gearbox shifts slightly differently in Dynamic (or RS1/RS2 if set up accordingly) mode. In this respect, the comment above pointing out this "error" (Comfort Mode) makes perfect sense.

Swimming, running, f1, etc. He also very often does not explain his new drag race rivals that they go on the hand drop so he usually has 1-2 tenth lead which is cheating in my book. Watch playback and slow it down to 0.25 speed. Watch the last drag race. You see him INSTANTLY leave just a millisecond after the hand drop. But fair to say these two cars are a match.

You guys are goofballs! The cars are pretty much identical and it seems like the launch is what determines each race. Matt is also just a bit quicker to react (not to mention he is calling the shots) so that gives him the edge. I would like to see this race on dry surface. Now, because the BMW is a V6, that makes it "quicker" than the V8 RS6 (based on the size of the engine). That is an impressive V6 and BMW is also known to slightly cheat about the horsepower ( just like the Supra, they have just a little more wheel HP than they officially claim). Great race, indeed!

As a massive C8 Audi RS6 fan, I mean I love that thing so so much, I have to say the M3 Touring is so impressive. Here it is competing with a completely different class of cars and it is not only keeping up but winning. I don't know how these two would fair in the dry but one thing is certain, the BMW M3 Touring is one of the most insane cars currently on sale.
Audi’s strength is the fact that it’s very well-refined, comfortable (more so than the m5 or the m3), very suited to daily driving, and it has probably the best looks. However none of these qualities matter in dragraces and it’s a fact that the Audi is too heavy and it would need more power to beat the m3/m5. Also while fast on a track (just as fast as a e63s), it’s prone to under steer due to the weight in the front and an overly safe setting made for people who can’t really drive… BMWs are just sportier. I think Audi could bit a little more daring when it comes to sport cars, they’re a little too conservative (although great all rounders)

Matt is another factor on these races sometimes, he has become skillful in launching these cars
I wish they would switch drivers, I can’t help but remember he has broken 2+ different PRs for the quarter mile in 2+ different cars.
@@intellect5850 for fear of sounding naive but surely if all he’s doing is using launch control then there isn’t any driver skill in the 1/4 mile time? All the times are recorded using raceboxes and gps so even if their reaction times are off the actual sprint time isn’t affected. It just doesn’t make for good content if they don’t start at the same time, plus you want to visually see the race rather than just compare the times. Hopefully you get what I’m trying to say
I’ll admit tho his reaction times are stellar
Surprised by the amount of travel on the rear suspension of the RS6. The M3 looked a firmer ride which I’m sure gave it more traction.
The RS6 was in comfort mode but sports gearbox in the aggressive rolling race so you do wonder if the got the setup in any other races
It doesn’t work like that. More traction you get from putting whole weight on back. Check 0-100 m5 vs m5 competition. M5 is a bit quicker bc of more comfortable suspension, whole weight goes to rear tires and it grips
@@Inpushkin228 bingo
@@Inpushkin228 this is generally true, but the Audi is AWD and will benefit from more weight staying on the front wheels. If you have no front weight, no benefit to AWD in drag race.

Mad respect. I've owned performance versions of both and currently in a 23' BMW X3 M40i - BMW seems to offer up a bit more power and grit between the two brands. BMW is definitely underrated when it comes to power.
I agree audi rs cars feel a bit boring to drive for me I test drove an rs6 and rs5 both felt very very quick but the experience in both was just as if I was in a bullet train very calm and quiet yet I was going at stupid speeds. BMWs just have more grunt to them and are more fun to drive
wow the M3 .. was expecting a good race but this hits the ball out of the park.. fantastic stuff Mat!

Well at least the Audi is a little bit more reliable. That doesn't say much, though.
I doubt this generation RS6 is more reliable than the award winning s58 engine that's in the m3@@cartrips9263

This shows just how good the ZF gearbox is too. There's no requirement for a heavy dual clutch anymore.
But dual clutch transmission are good on track but zf good for cruising
Both are ZF8
@@stefanomarcellino6701 yeah you are right, dumb comment of OP ngl, he is basically saying: This just shows how good A is. There is no need for A.
I love the M3 but have to disagree on the ZF. I hate it. It has better software in the M3 than in the M5 but it still reacts so slowly in manual mode in upshifts. With the DCT the M3 would be perfect imo. In normal driving the ZF is great.
@@peterhammer6915 what about just... a manual?
From my recent experiences with bmws their gearboxes are immense and their drivetrains of late put the power down incredibly well.
@@noobz5056 where have you heard this? The M3/4 does not have any notable hybrid assist or battery over their regular cars.
I want Nick to participate more often Mat! He is such a clever guy who knows all the stats and also he is perfect in front of the camera!
He isn’t the best driver through. I’d rather see Yian. Least he can launch a car

The most aggresive setting and than footage of an audi in COMFORT 😊. Nice BMW touring this M3 is 👍🏻
That's true!
It was the most aggresive setting in comfort for the BMW, he could go stage 3 in sport+ mode
@@TheFrankybody there would also be Dynamic or RS1/RS2 mode in the RS6
@@nitschi RS1/RS2 in the RS6 is only preconfigured driving modes in the car. BMW m-models lets you pick a stage between 1-3 for how fast/hard the gearbox should shift.
@@TheFrankybody the gearbox shifts slightly differently in Dynamic (or RS1/RS2 if set up accordingly) mode. In this respect, the comment above pointing out this "error" (Comfort Mode) makes perfect sense.

Matt can you do the dyno test for m3 touring please
After so many drag races and a lot of practice, Matt became so good that it's becoming really hard to beat him 😂
He isn’t. He doesn’t react on the hand drop on three but he anticipates the hand drop. Something which is almost not allowed in any sporting event with time. It is considered a false start.
@@shardphoenix Everyone does that. This is the reason why there is a countdown, it helps to know when to start.

@@r12323-o in a street race you go when the light turns green or when the phone light comes on lol. I'm no street outlaw but personally i wouldn't put money on my race if the race isn't being started with some sort of light, one guy might take the hand moving as the start and the other guy might take the hand being completely down as the start and in cars that are within 100hp of each other like in this video, that's not the best way to decide.
One of your best 👌 videos Matt, because you surprised us with a different challenge (best of 5 for launch) because the two cars compared, so similar and different, because weather conditions, because your empathy and humour shared with your colleague, and because most of us (watching) are fans of both brands ans models.
Te equivocas, yo tengo un m5 2023 y créeme son cómodos. BMW siempre está un paso o dos por delante de Audi
