      I love All in the Family-the best show. And let's all start behaving like adults and not act like offended brats. Sticks and stones break my bones, and words should never hurt anyone. The social engineer's agenda is to divide the masses through race and color and have us fighting among each other. This is precisely what is happening today. Now we have hate crimes? Really?

    The whole point of All in the Family and The Jeffersons was to take the underlining bigotry ( from both sides ) and shine a light on it. The comedy was to make you laugh but it was out there, in your face. No PC. Pure and raw. When the laughter was done, you thought about what they were talking about. Nothing was taboo for these shows. The put it out there in prime time TV for the masses to digest. Just like M.A.S.H. They turned the mirror on society and revealed the reality. There is no way these shows would exist today because society has gotten too soft to understand and deal with them. Another fantastic show was Good Times.

    Hi MRM! Some things to note: As others have said, this show was never about espousing Archie Bunker's views as the right way that people should think -- it was more to show how ridiculous those prejudicial views are, and were even then. Those who might call this show racist or misogynistic don't actually understand the show and don't realize that creator and producer Norman Lear actually had political and social views quite different from Archie's, as did Carroll O'Connor, the actor who played Archie.
    This show actually played an important role in American society... yes, it was just a TV show but keep in mind there were only three major American television networks back then and no TH-cam or streaming opportunities or even VHS tapes to watch instead. "All in the Family" raised important issues, normally in a humorous way, and brought them into the mainstream. While most of us abhor people like Archie Bunker in real life, or just feel sorry for them, the character served an important role.

    • @evadwall
      @evadwall 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Series creator Norman Lear was/is a leftist and never intended for the character Archie Bunker to be liked by the audiences. Archie's opinions were meant to be a parody of "right wing bigotry." However, Lear was shocked to find out the character was beloved by middle America, hence the popularity of the show. So no, most people didn't love the show because of it's left wing preachiness, but because they thought Archie roasting his atheist, commie son-in-law (and others) was hilarious.

Archie was the old bigoted grump to Mike and Gloria’s feminist counter culture that was the youth of the time. Archie typically got put in his place by the end. Problem is not enough people are canals of grasping that and just take Archie at face value and just think this is a “show of the times” which is only partially correct

    The beauty of All in the Family was that it showed both sides as his son in law always had the opposing view. Also, Archie was a bigot because he was raised that way and he eventually changed in later seasons as his views softened. He eventually took in his half-Jewish niece and had a Jewish business partner and an African American housekeeper who grew to respect and even defended her honor in one episode. If show bigotry but he was an equal opportunity bigot, and stereo-typed all races and genders.

    Hey MRM, how's it going? Just letting you know that as a gay Puerto-rican man, I never took offense at the things said on this show, as I know it was about showing the idiocy of bigotry (Carroll O'Connor, who played Archie Bunker, was actually very open-minded, even by today's standards). As I've seen said by others on this channel, Archie was an Equal Opportunity Bigot, lol, he hated EVERYONE who wasn't him. But I was never butt-hurt by the jokes as I knew the situations, the time, and the fact that so many ppl in real life talk like this, and besides, the show was actually funny and one of my fave tv comedies of all-time. Just so you know the skinny: Archie is the blue-collar patriarch, raised in a very bigoted part of Queens, NY, and very close-minded, but he always learned an important lesson before the end of the shows; Edith is his wonderfully dizzy wife, naiive, innocent (some would say simple) but she was the heart of the family so much so that as much as ppl hated Archie, they all loved Edith); Gloria, their "Little Goil", the independent woman, and her husband Mike (Meathead), whose liberal, democratic values always got under his father-in-law's skin like nothing else--unless you count some of his greatest enemies on the show, George Jefferson, played amazingly by the late great Sherman Hemsley and his fantastic wife Louise, the equally talented Isabel Sanford; their Irish-Catholic next door neighbor the outspoken Irene Lorenzo; and Edith's liberal, feminist cousin Maude (played by the great Beatrice Arthur, who plays the sarcastic Dorothy on Golden Girls--which I know you've also been reacting to, so if you think about what a great comedian she is you'll understand how awesome her showdowns with her polar opposite Archie were, as he always said about Maude whenever the family brought her up "Geez, I hate that dame!" Her later spinoff show was also great, but my two favorites were always All in the Family & The Jeffersons. Anyway, sorry about that tangeant, just got carried away as I don't anyone else with the cojones to react to this show, here's hoping you do to many more--personal hint: ANYTHING from the FIRST FIVE SEASONS WAS GOLD. I wanted to put my two cents in about possibly offending people with the content...just put up your disclaimer at the beginning and get to enjoying, as I've said as a gay latino man, I am not offended in the least, in fact I laugh along with the audience as we get a front-row seat to some of the best written, and best-acted ensembles in tv history...and we all can't wait for Archie to get his in the end...and he always did, lol. It's actually a different character, George Jefferson's brother Henry. Sherman Helmsley had already been cast as George, but he had a prior commitment, so he wasn't available to shoot the first few episodes George was scheduled to appear in. So they wrote in this character of George's brother to take his place until Helmsley was available.
      If I remember correctly, they appeared together in only one episode, and then Henry was never seen again.

    He was not like that AT ALL in real life..in fact imma tell ya about some tv goings ons. After Carroll died, Sherman Hemsley called the Larry King show and told how things all went about. When they were casting for George Jefferson, Sherman Hemsley's agent told him to go audition for the role of George Jefferson. Sherman was like I dunno about that, that's a hugely popular show. but he went on ahead and went to the audition. He was very nervous, But Carroll put his arm around his shoulder gave him a reassuring smile and said You''l do fine which put him at tremendous ease. And said lets go through some lines. After they got done. Carroll looked at him, the cast/ crew and said He's our George Jefferson. And the rest is tv history.

      I grew up in a town ( in the 70's ) where most people got along and one could see tension more between people for their sexuality than the color of their skin. the 60's as I have been told were more racial ( not that there is anything good about being prejudice against others in any way )

    I hope you get to The Jeffersons. In this clip you saw . On the show Lionel was the first African American character and Norman Lear had the shows producer had plans to bring in his parents and that they would live next door to The Bunkers . Louise's husband George was introduced in this episode for the first time at the going away party for his brother Henry. They had hired an actor Sherman Hemsley to play George, but at the time he was on Broadway in the musical Purlie . So George came on the show a year after his family had already being there. After another year the Jeffersons got their own show as George when from owning two til Seven Dry Cleaners. By the time the show when off the air in the mid 80's George own 13 dry cleaners.

    This was prime time television growing up in the 1970s. Norman Lear loved to push his issues with a mix of lecturing and humor. When all is said and done, what remains was some funny, brave and incendiary television. We never repeated Archie Bunker's lines because we considered them his own and life went on without anyone getting their noses out of joint. Today it's a different world where that distinction is no longer being made.

He was a wonderful character and this show was just to be outrageous at first. When Edith dies, Archie showed his true colors.
