Dude the Jeffersons was a spinoff from all in the family. George was the black archie bunker. It was a great show

David Tesso I loved the Jeffersons too. Though George was pretty much the black version of Archie, his family was very different from Archie’s. His wife Louse was no Edith. Lol and my favorite character was their housekeeper, Florence. The bantering between her and George is just iconic. I wonder how many times George fired Florence. Lol aww Florence. Did she have a mouth I her. Lol I think we all adored her. As did Greorge, but he would not admit it.

George Jefferson and Archie Bunker were buddies.
Then Maude was a spin off of All in the Family.
For all the people that hate Archie, Archie was a character. Search Carol O'Conner and see his library of shows and then adjust your argument properly to make sure it is correct.
It was a difficult place for Carol to be in and he chose to do it anyway because he wanted ignorance to be properly seen.
Carol O'Conner was a lifelong liberal, but he grew up knowing many "Archie Bunkers" so that is why he was able to perfect the character
Archie was a butthead but he was funny ....

As a white girl born in the 60's I can tell you my generation enjoyed all kinds of shows, and it didn't matter what color a person's skin was. We laughed at each other's jokes and at ourselves. The PC culture in America has pretty well destroyed humor and is still trying to make us all uncomfortable around each other.

As Johnny Carson said and I am paraphrasing, if you peel open every joke there is a little bit of truth, the fact that it was allowed to make jokes of these serious issues it doesn't change the truth that they exist and are no laughing matter. Of course the goal was to bring these issue into the public's awareness as serious issues using situational comedy.
If you watch more episodes, you'll discover that the characters are really more nuanced than they initially appear. Even though Archie is a product of the prejudices he was raised with (and also a victim of domestic abuse as a child), his heart is usually in the right place, even if his brain takes him in a wrong direction. Edith seems, on the surface, to be a "dingbat", but she is also deeply thoughtful and often the strength that the family needs. At first glance, Mike seems to be Archie's polar opposite, being the educated, forward thinking progressive, but he holds just as many prejudices, and practices the "soft bigotry of low expectation." Gloria can sometimes be the voice of reason, but she can also be just as stubborn as Archie. The characters grow and evolve as the series goes on.

I think the reason so many people of the younger generation find the show offensive is because they don't quite understand that the show was intended to be a satire. A rather clever satire, exposing just how ridiculous and absurd prejudice and cultural ignorance is. This type of satire has become an almost lost art form in today's comedy.
It’s a shame, coming from a mostly racist family this show taught me a lot as a child. We only had 3 channels to watch so it was this or the war and news
Archie Bunker was a much deeper character than what most people think. One of the most emotional episodes for me is when Mike learned that Archie was beaten as a boy by his father, and that his father hated Archie. And when Mike learns from Edith that Archie is actually jealous of Mike, because he is a college graduate and has a whole future in front of him, while he learns Archie had to quit school in the 7th grade to go to work to support his family and then went and fought in the Second World War. Also in many episodes you learn that Archie isn't as Racist as he sounds he's very close and even protective of Lionel Jefferson. All of this is what made Archie Bunker so beloved by both white and black Americans, because he was complex and he was flawed. In truth the whole series was about, that despite his bombastic facade, Archie actually had a heart of gold. I wish Americans today could realize that and stop being so scared of each other and love others for their flaws, what a country that would be.
My fav AITF episode. Mike cried after archie fell asleep and archie had told him all about his sad childhood and poverished upbringing and arch spilled his guts and the whole "shebooty" thing and how bad archie was bullied in school over it. Right after mike stopped sobbing he looks over at passed out arch and whispered "good night shebooty". My whole family cried!! Mike had a whole different outlook about archie and a big turning point in his relationship with archie until the show ended years later. A series everyone should binge watch to get full reasoning and perspective of what the show and its characters were pointing up. Also see Sanford and Son, the Jeffersons and Chico and the Man.

Archie did not have a heart of gold. Far from it. But as you said he was flawed which means his character was uneven or complex. I could never love Archie. Edith could but she was a better person than most of us. I did love his show, however... at least before they changed writers in 1975. The later episodes were hardly funny at all.
Carroll O’Connor went on to make “In the Heat of the Night,” a police drama that had the most diverse cast I’ve ever seen. It dealt with racism in the south in a far more nuanced way than anything since, AND there was a deeply Christian message in a lot of the episodes. It won a number of awards and showcased some amazing talents along the way.

I had no idea it was the Democratic Party that was behind it. I had always believed, the Dems care about the people, Repubs care only about business. Ive learned a lot these last 20 yrs!

I got a kick out of seeing Archie destroying certain words with his pronunciations😂 In just about every episode.
That gets me too. Lol.
Examples: Fill-et- mig.......non (filet mignon). And deeeee..............bris (debris). I always loved when he emphatically referred to President Nixon as Richard E Nixon.....even though Nixon's middle name is Millhouse!!!!! Long live Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Conner)!!!
Or when he misunderstood a word. My favorite was when he confronted Irene for taking Edith to a Catholic church "Are you trying to accuse me of proselytizing?" Which of course Archie mistook as 'prostituting" lol
Norman Lear had an entire narrative: from "All in the Family" to "The Jeffersons" and "Maude" to "Good Times". He pulled no punches. You should check them all out.
Adrianne Merideth some of the best writing in sitcom history occurred on those shows.

704 Hauser was the last 'Spin-Off' (If you can call it that) of 'All In The Family' and took place at the Bunker's home after Archie sold it and moved into the apartment above KELCEY'S BAR as he now owned it because the house had too many memories of Edith. But I think the show actually took place after Archie sold the bar and moved in with Gloria and her new husband.

My all-time favorite "All in the Family" episode. Hilarious. I'm also glad you're showing "All in the Family." You're absolutely right about why it was produced, and what it meant to many of us at the time. It addressed so many issues of the time, showing people as individuals, not just members of a particular group. Thanks for your viewpoint, very important.
Live studio reaction is very real. The chemistry and interaction between them priceless. But the fight between Archie and Maude hilarious. She's the only one who gives it to Archie as good as he gives it. Watched as a kid and still watch it where ever I find it.

My granddad was as well. He even had his favorite chair that you had to get out of when wanted to sit down. He never had to say anything, everybody else would tell you - "get up, your sitting in grandpop's chair." I asked him once why he got to have his own favorite chair when no one else did. He told me that it was a free country and that there was nothing preventing me from buying my own favorite chair, just like he did. Can't really argue with that logic, but I was 5 or 6 at the time and I told him i didn't have any money. He asked me what kind of chair I would buy if I had a job. I told him, and he suggested that I put it on my list for Santa. That year Santa brought me a big red bean bag chair and I sat it right next to grandpop's chair like I was the king of turd mountain.
I’m glad you watched all in the family with us. This show is a Classic. Been watching since it first aired in 1971. And that’s how that show was. You saw Archies ignorance of society, politics, race etc. but with humor sprinkled in. It was groundbreaking for that time period. Thanks Ty.
Mike was seen as the ignorant one by the majority of the viewers. Like a hippie far leftist which is why Archie became the star of the show

CBS Saturday Night in the early 70's was the best TV lineup ever! All in the Family, M*A*S*H, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, The Carol Burnett Show! Everyone stayed home on a Saturday night!!
"All In the Family" was a show in the 70s that had most of the U.S. talking about these issues. The show spun off a show for Maude and the Jeffersons. They also tackled issues of racism, economics, birth control, LGBTQ issues, abortion, etc. They were great shows and have aged well.

Love Your final commentary!!! You got it. He represents one persons view, but look at all the rest around him that would try to correct his view. I was a kid when this show came out. You could say what you wanted without political correctness. It may not have been right but it was ok to speak your mind. You knew where you stood with people. People would openly speak their mind. This show was a way to open up a dialogue so society could change, and it has. It may not seem like it has but it did.

I would love to see a reaction to the All in the Family episode when Edith starts going through menopause. Of course, Archie is patient and gentle while dealing with it, NOT. LOL He tries. Edith gets pretty feisty towards Archie in this episode which is what makes it so funny. The episode is titled '' Edith's Problem.''

Norman Lear creator and writer to All in the family, had other iconic shows on television. The Jefferson's, Maude, Good Times, Sanford and Son, One day at a time. Many more. Nobody understood the human condition in a way like Norman Lear did, he created some of the most unforgettable television characters in the history of television. The stories he would tell were funny, thought provoking, and honest .The 70s were a trip and all of these shows did portray the current events of it's time. Today they would probably be considered politically incorrect and never make it to the major networks. I believe Norman Lear had shows running on ABC, NBC and CBS ,some at the same time. To understand these shows you have to understand Norman Lear. If you have not seen or heard about these shows please research and watch them. I think you'll enjoy them.
Maude was given her own show which ran for several years and Mike and Gloria eventually moved out and a spin off featuring them was planned, but Rob Reiner wanted to become a director / producer for major motion pictures and was only interested if he could direct and produce, so, the idea was scrapped. A very short - lived spin off called 'Gloria' was made starring Sally Struthers and Burgess Meredith, the show was about Gloria returning to New York from California to work in a veterinary clinic after her husband Mike ran off with one of his students to live in a commune.

ARchie didn't hate anyone, he was struggling to make a dollar to pay for food, bills and stay afloat.... SOOOOOO great we can laugh at Archie- and you are RIGHT- people want people to think we are all like Archie in reality, but YOU SEE THE REAL TRUTH! The 70's tv shows were the best. Doesn't matter what color show was on at the time, it was a slam on the other race. But it was funny. Forward 30 years or more, the shows are still funny, but most of us get it now. One great period of the best comedy ever made.

As one who remembers these shows when they were new, I'm happy that someone from your generation appreciates them so. Your laughter added a lot to my enjoyment of this classic episode.
This show was one of the most genius shows, in my opinion, of all time. It made people laugh at the absurdity of stereotypes. But the genius was it did it without being condescending or preachy. It just put it out there and ‘let it happen’.

All In The Family spawned so many successful spinoffs: Maude, The Jeffersons, and Good Times (spinoff of Maude)! All classic television! Producer, Norman Lear was ahead of his time. Most of his shows showed how unfair the political system was and while giving us comedy, they show realistic social situations. He wasn't afraid to tackle racial topics. Shows like these often revealed the ignorance and absurdity of a character, like Archie who represented the ignorance of racism that exists in the world.💖💖
I'm 75. I lived during the time that All In The Family was on T.V. We laughed at Archie and the way he thought just as you did. The producers and actors on this program and others were making fun of Archy and his Ilk. We have totally lost our sense of humor in this age of outrage! Your reaction was as funny as the program and I laughed along WITH you. Btw, We did change and are changing as a result of programs like this and the discussions they created.

"All in the Family" was a great show, especially in the beginning. A wave of Political Correctness back in that day did seep in and hurt the comedy of that show over time.

TY, THANK you for showing this entire episode when MAUDE arrived, it was one of my FAVORITES. Back then my family and I never missed an episode of "All in the Family," It was my favorite comedy show, along with "MAUDE," The JEFFERSONS," "GOOD TIMES," and "SANFORD and SON". OH yeah, I forgot about "CHICO and the MAN" But it was "ALL IN THE FAMILY" that started it all. I LOVE your laugh and how you TOTALLY "GET" what the show was about. It makes me SO SAD, to know that this show could NEVER be on today (thankfully episodes are STILL shown in syndication on certain cable channels) FUNNIEST show EVER, in my opinion, hasn't been anything funnier than "All in the Family" and the other comedy shows I listed above, on today's TV. Really appreciate your comments after watching the Bunkers!

Pro Tip: Go into the audio settings and turn off the windows alerts so they dont interrupt your video. I used to do corporate audio visual and once I had the same sound come over the PA in the middle of a speech. Since it was the presenters computer there wasnt much I could do but after that I made the presenters use my computer that had been pre-tweaked for the show.

I forgot Bea Arthur started "Maude" on All In the Family. What a great comedienne! You should watch some Golden Girls clips. All of those women were incredibly funny on that show! What a blast seeing this show again. I grew up with this. It was VERY controversial at the time. They tackled racial issues, women's rights... even LGBT issues, which was unheard of back then! What a classic.

One of the Episodes I always liked was when Archie was talking to Gloria and Mike about the superiority of Men to Women. They were astonished. Archie explained how God made Eve out of Adams rib, and that it was a cheaper cut.

Later on in the show, Archie softens up some- the one where Edith passes away and he cares for a little girl they took in, is heartwarming. Of course, still some Archie humor , but I enjoyed those seasons. Even though Edith was greatly missed and there were doubts the show cld go on without her- I personally felt they did a good job on the scripts and storylines after- 💛🤘🏼✌️ Sending love always. All in the Family became one of the most positively influential pieces of pop entertainment ever created by honestly and directly presenting the characters and their points of view and letting the audience see them for who they were, trusting that most people would sense that Archie's time was over. What a lesson for our time! A lot of people are offended by this show today because they don't share that trust in the ability of others to see the truth.
Still watch the reruns of this show and it still makes me laugh as well as the Jefferson's.. looking forward to your Jefferson's reaction...I'll be waiting hopefully you will do it soon
Norman Lear in his genius, wrote the sitcom at the time of turmoil in america. He took poignant issues that still exist today and made them funny in essence to rethink their minds. Bravo to the cast & crew
Norman Lear is a genius. He is still producing great television content. He got people to start talking to one another.
That show dealt with a lot of serious social issues. It taught me that angels and assholes come in all shapes and sizes, and that most of us are a bit of both.
the actor that plays Archie(Caroll O'Connor) was also in "In The Heat Of The Night" also had racial issues brought to the forefront He played a small town sheriff trying to solve a murder and they bring in a black suspect Virgil Tubbs (Howard Rollins) who is a Philadelphia detective just passing through so once they get that clear he stays on to help them solve the mystery even though they have prejudiced people in the small town. Rollins portrays a strong man but extremely intelligent man and eventually earns O'Connors respect.

Keep in mind that Archie gets his dialog from the writers. Carol O'Connor was brilliant at interpreting the words for his character.

Those were the days! Carroll O'Conner as Archie Bunker and Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker are probably the best TV characters of all time! They don't make 'em like that anymore.

The character of Archie was used to show that bigotry / racism is always based on ignorance, fear and misconceptions. I remember back then nobody wanted to be called an "Archie Bunker". In fact I think the Archie character actually helped to combat racism. It brought it out in the open for everyone to see.

We enjoyed SO many comedy shows in the 60's & 70's All In The Family, The Jefferson's, Good Times, Chico & The Man , Sanford & Son all GREAT SHOWS!!!!!!!
I watched this religiously as a teenager. The show was ahead of its time. It was ground-breaking then & reflected the prejudices back to many who held those views. We all knew someone like Archie...still do. Carol O'Connor's (Archie) only child, was in his early 30s when he committed suicide & I don't think Carol O'Connor ever got over it. He died about 6 years later in his mid 70s of a heart attack. As a side note, Carol O'Connor starred as the sheriff in the TV series "In The Heat of The Night" in the 80s-90s. His son also appeared in that series.
My family watched this show every week (and not just because we only had 2 channels to pick from) and I think it was practically a public service message. They didn't shy from any topic, neither did "Maude" when she got her own show, I remember one about her daughter Carol had an abortion, that was something NEVER mentioned on TV.
Context is really important for these old shows, we still had a draft on (that was discussed on "All in the Family" too, Mike had a friend who took off for Canada to avoid going to war) and young men were being sent to Vietnam to defend Asia against Communists, the whole Domino Theory. This show got people talking, debating as did Walter Kronkite when he went over there and broadcast live, showing our wounded and dead. Soon after that they stopped allowing it but it was enough to turn national opinion against the war after countless protests. The Generation Gap was closing.
You are right. If you shut people down and don't talk about it, it festers
and then explodes. Calling someone racist only adds to the problem.
Wish people today could laugh at each other again & not be offended. It's like walking on eggshells now a days.
Bea Arthur and Carroll O'Connor worked well together in their only episode together playing Maude and Archie! I love me some Bea Arthur! She was funny as well as Maude and more serious as Dorothy on The Golden Girls. The same with the actor Carroll O'Connor playing Archie! He was more serious on the TV Drama In The Heat Of The Night.
All of those shows helped us understand each other.❤
