    For everyone who is saying that Hariyama deserves a second playthrough because I played poorly - I hear you. Honestly, it's been rough reading all the comments directed at the quality of my play, but I think it's fair criticism. However, I won't be doing another run until I've concluded this series of first playthroughs. If you're feeling that Hariyama has been treated unfairly, just look at Mewtwo and Rayquaza's current placements... All these Pokemon deserve another chance! With time they will all get another chance to shine.

      i think its fair to wait with second playthroughs. i hear you mention new pathing options all the time, regardless of whatever generation you're playing. the optimal route will only be found through experience together with a modest amount of trial and error. keep up the good work scott!

      It's very understandable if you want to prioritize other runs in gen 3 before you ever want to do reruns. I'm sure a LOT goes into these compared to gens 2 and 3 due to the sheer length the average run is. The fact that you don't do a second, optimized playthrough by default on gen 3 says enough. Honestly, it is amazing how Hariyama did amazing even despite the 'mismanaged' play, I'm sure everyone will look forward to its eventual rerun.

    Yeah, carrying both Bellydrum and Bulk Up through most of the playthrough was probably really holding Hariyama back. Bellydrum can be amazing, but it requires commitment. Maybe a future vs video with one Hariyama running Bulk Up and the other Bellydrum might be in order whenever Scott gets around to multiple playthroughs.

    • @danielvroom1331
      @danielvroom1331 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      Bellydrum usually requires setup to sweep with safety. Bulkup is the better SOLO.

    • @greyscaleadaven
      @greyscaleadaven 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Honestly IMO it does seem like it kind of has to commit to one or the other. The two sets I could see are like this (these are just theorycrafting sets, not claiming to be an expert on gen 3 solos or anything):
      Belly Drum Offense:
      Item: Shell Bell/Chesto Berry (temporary when needed)
      Moves:
      Belly Drum
      Vital Throw/Brick Break
      HP Ghost
      Rest
      Bulk Up Offense:
      item: Silk Scarf/Shell Bell
      Moves:
      Bulk Up
      Vital Throw/Brick Break
      Return/Dig
      HP Ghost
      Belly Drum has less neutral coverage, but more immediate firepower. There were a lot of close-to-KO moments that Belly Drum would have made a non-issue in the same amount of turns for example. Bulk Up has more moveset variety and bulk, but takes longer to set up. Rest ensures that Belly Drum is safer to use, though it might slow things down so only using it when Shell Bell isn't enough or with Chesto is probably best. Bulk Up allows for more item flexibility (many gyms want a status berry for consistency) and is far more reliable in a race for example. Belly Drum is likely better with optimized routing, but bulk up is far more consistent. It's probably best to use Bulk Up when it is received though regardless of what route this pokemon takes. I could see this pokemon being fun for a race format similar to Smeargle or Parasect in gen 3, because it's accessible in terms of difficulty and has a lot of moveset variety. It could also potentially find a route where it gets guaranteed burn and uses potions and ethers to heal throughout the rest of the playthrough as well, which IMO seems like the best way of using guts with this pokemon because poison is too potion intensive and para is too risky accuracy-wise. I'd be interested to see what people come up with at least (like maybe grinding on flame body pokemon with physical moves on Fiery Path until it gets burned for example). Sleep talk also works with guts as well in these games, so people could also utilize that strategy without a boosting move as well.

      @@greyscaleadaven Hariyama is too slow to use belly drum effectively. You talk about the right set up with belly drum but all you need is speed. That's why linoone can solo sweep the E4 with belly drum. Maybe if you plan around a belly drum route and use a jolly hariyama instead it can pay off, but that's a big maybe. it probably also requires dedicated EV training for hariyama to be fast enough.

      Also guts is ONLY AMAZING or viable on speed demons like swellow
      Both of YOU had impressive comments
      I'd PERSONALLY use thick fat on hariyama because I can deal with fire n ice attacks easily n I'd feel like guts is overkill n not great on slow Pokémon

    • @greyscaleadaven
      @greyscaleadaven 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DJarr216 It's true that speed is a weakness of the set, and it would definitely struggle in matchups where even the Badge Boost + Nature + Natural EVs + level difference aren't enough to make up for it's abysmal 50 base speed. That's not particularly hard to outpace as mentioned by another commenter. It does have great natural bulk though paired with Shell Bell and good fighting-ghost coverage. It also has some access to Carbos due to selling unnecessary TMs and not needing to buy any. Bulk up is far more consistent though. It is slower and invites more crits or status via extra time spent setting up however. It also doesn't ward against special attacks, so that bulk benefit gets partially lost against some trainers. Both have strengths and weaknesses for sure. I can't say for sure what's faster.

  • @shadowtitanx3962
    @shadowtitanx3962 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +65

    I think for a second Hariyama run, I think a Speed Nature would be ideal. There’s couple of fights where Hariyama isn’t fast enough to outrun specific opponents, like Walrein or Luvdisc. And, Adamant is kinda overkill when it has early Bulk Up.

    • @ZerglingOne1
      @ZerglingOne1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Yeah, there were definitely a few cases where 10% more speed would have given him the outspeed. And since Hariyama has the absolute best possible dump stat choice given its move set, it never actually loses anything from lowering a stat.

  • @o7ViiGHTMAREo
    @o7ViiGHTMAREo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    I actually never thought about the utility of focus energy in gen 1, when you’re using badge boost the crits negate the badge boost, therefore if you have a decreased chance for crits that actually HELPS! Amazing

  • @perkypenguin1663
    @perkypenguin1663 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

    I think in general, danger strats, like pre-poisoning to activate Guts or using Belly Drum, work well when they’re used on speedy Pokémon. I think Swellow and Linoone could achieve impressive results with Guts and Belly Drum strategies respectively because of how fast they are, meanwhile Hariyama seems to work better as a tank. Overall, you did a good job with Hariyama and I’m excited for spooky month!

    Something interesting about Hariyama is the fact that they are banned in the competitive format "Almost Any Ability" because of Triage (you get huge priority when using recovery moves, draining moves inclusive)
    With that massive Attack and natural bulk, after one Belly Drum they just spam he most broken Drain Punch

    Forgot to mention about Fighting types in Hoenn.
    In Hoenn playthroughs, Fighting is very good, despite having problems with Psychic, Flying, and Ghost types in Hoenn. Hidden Power Ghost covers Tate and Liza and Phoebe well. And, Flying is easy to play around with Bulk Up.
    Fire in Johto was their redemption arc after their miserable time in Gen 1 Kanto. Fighting was pretty bad in Gen 1 and even in Gen 2 when Cross Chop is only on Machamp and Primeape by level up and good old High Jump Kick on Hitmonlee. Either they have no good Fighting type move with good power and accuracy, like Hitmonchan between Mach Punch and Dynamic Punch, or if they have a gimmicky Fighting move, like Reversal Heracross. And, Hidden Power Fighting has horrendous DVs for a "good" Fighting type move without drawback.
    In Hoenn, all 5 types that Fighting is good against, Normal, Rock, Ice, Dark, and Steel, are pretty significant, unlike Johto. You beat Roxanne, Wattson's Magneton, Norman, Mightyenas everywhere, Sidney, Glacia, and have neutral matchups against Steven's team other than Claydol, which lacks Psychic, and Skarmory, which is easy Bulk Up setup. In fact, Fighting might be top A Rank in type viability for Hoenn along with Water, Normal, and Psychic, since Fighting has good neutral matchups against everyone else who isn't weak or resistant to Fighting, like Wallace, Juan, Drake, Brawly, and Flannery. However, in Fire Red and Leaf Green, Fighting definitely struggles again with Alakazams, while Hoenn lacks Alakazams.
    They finally get good Fighting type moves after 2 Generations of Dynamic Punch Accuracy moves or bad Fighting type moves like Submission. Brick Break is just so good to have for consistency for once. Focus Punch if you have Substitute in tact. And, early Bulk Up is the huge cherry on top in the early game. Also, some of them having Guts really help getting the damage boost they need in certain fights, albeit risky without Rest and Sleep Talk.

    Even odds that the 8th gym was originally planned to be an Ice gym, but I'm guessing they didn't want to have both an Ice type gym leader and an Ice type elite 4. There is also a bit of a pokemon diversity problem for the Ice type, as there are just 2 lines of ice type pokemon in Honenn.
    When I played gen 3, I remember the fighting type being extremely useful. A lot of the team aqua and magma members use dark types, so having powerful fighting type moves can get your through the storyline quick.

      I like Glacia being where she is simply because there are far too many Ice gym leaders in Gyms 6-8, but if I am being honest I would prefer Ice types in Gym 1. Ice types can have powerful moves that early, and there are generally an abundance of Grass and Flying types in Gen 1-to-7-styled routes, so you can engineer Ice type to be more of a threat than it should be.

    Vital Throw does exist in Gen 2, but it's exclusive to the Machop line there.
    12:20 I think Game Freak thought about that too, which is why they would come up with Wake-Up Slap for Gen 4.
    At least when Misty gives you Water Pulse, she's the second Gym Leader, which would give the move some time to shine.
    Even if Steven's Claydol set up Reflect, it wouldn't matter, since Brick Break would just shatter it.
    Medicham can get some pretty solid type coverage, and low HP Reversals from it can be deadly as hell, but honestly, if I really want a Psychic/Fighting type in any gen after 3, I would rather have Gallade.

    This is going to be interesting. I remember when I found a shiny Makuhita in Sapphire on the chase for a Nosepass only to realize you are supposed to get one from using Rock Smash. Low chance but at least you can soft reset for one. It is currently a Hariyama and quite the powerhouse on the team. But a quick flaw I noticed aside from speed, was its move pool kind of being limited to helping push out some of the less than physically bulky Pokémon. Guts might be useful but at the same time Thick Fat will help you endure fire and ice Pokémon. Can't wait to see how this goes through.

    • @megariderfire1994
      @megariderfire1994 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Considering how Guts ultimately isn't that useful in a solo playthrough...maybe Thick Fat would ultimately be a better option if you were to do a optimizing second playthrough? Having a fire and ice resistance is a good niche. Also, did you know Snorlax can also have that ability?
      Considering how Fighting Types suck in Gen 1 and while Gen 3 is their major redemption arc...and Gen 4 introduced the physical special split and introduced moves like Close Combat to further help the fighting type's coverage moves like elemental punches from Hitmonchan. I wonder how Gen 2 would fare for the fighting types, at least there's more moves.

    • @ScottE-2
      @ScottE-2 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@megariderfire1994 Guts turned out to be more useful than not. Especially considering how it gives the Pokémon a big boost in attack, on a Pokémon that already tosses trucks like toys. Especially when it is that ability that will help bypass certain resistances to its move pool. And yes I am well aware that mountain bear has Thick Fat, it also has Immunity.
      The major issue from Gen 1-2 is that, there were no good fighting moves to be distributed. Interestingly, the move Low Kick would later become a TM in SV. I imagine if more Pokémon could access that move as early as Viridian, a lot of Pokémon would definitely get passed Brock much quicker. But even with that, a proper fighting move like Brick Break was necessary to prevent the type from being useless.

    • @megariderfire1994
      @megariderfire1994 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, I see. And yeah, I agree about a lot of the fighting type moves not being "good"...in the words of Mandjtv in his fighting type then and now video, the new moves introduced in Gen 2 were either too inaccurate (Cross Chop, Triple Kick to an extent, or the infamous Dynamic Punch) or too weak. (Rock Smash, Mach Punch due to being a priority move, and Karate Chop is middle of the road) And then there were was Reversal which is quite risky and Vital Throw, which only Machamp got back then, which was decent in power and will always hit but suffered from being a low priority move.
      Now to mention the other fighting type moves back in Gen 1 weren't too different in that regard, heck even al the moves Hitmonlee aren't perfectly accurate (Jump Kick and High Jump Kick were buffed in power in much later gens) while Double Kick was straight up middle of the road overall. While Seismic Toss does fixed damage and Counter is rather situational and was even worse in Gen 1.
      In regards to Gen 3 fighting type moves... Arm Thrust is pretty weak and inconsistent, Sky Uppercut is strong but isn't perfectly accurate, Focus Punch is super powerful yet really requires the right strat, and Revenge is better on slow bulky attackers as it suffers from being low priority, and no fighting types in gen 3 got Superpower which would just drop your attack and defense upon use. Heck, even after Low Kick got buffed, it's damage is somewhat random as it depends on your opponent's weight but I do agree it would be great in the early game.
      So yeah, Brick Break would definitely the medium of fighting type attacks for the fighting types in Gen 3.

    • @bitterzombie
      @bitterzombie 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Guts is good, but it requires you to pack a status the whole time, which can be a problem in solo runs. For one, you have to heal sometime, & when you do, you have to waste time going & getting status'd again. This gets even more annoying late in the game, when you have to backtrack to areas with weaker wild pokemon that can inflict status on you again. Keep in mind that poison, the most common status, also damages you in the overworld, so it wastes time buying & using potions. And if you hit a wall on an enemy team that requires you to set up on, chip damage or para drag can become a real problem.
      Thick fat is more situationally useful, but it can be good against fire blast or ice beam spam, and doesnt have any drawbacks. Guts is more consistantly beneficial, but requires more resource commitment to STAY beneficial, which would probably hurt its overall time more in the long run.

    Also while Vital Throw has decreased priority (-1), it still has higher priority than the follow-through of Focus Punch (-3). So it can be used to interrupt Meditite which is much more consistent than Arm Thrust.
    EDIT:
    Nvm i see that you did it at first and then switched to Arm Thrust after Meditite used Bulk Up. I'm assuming you were going for critical hits. Not sure how the math on that pans out and which is the better option.

    Nice run! It's nice to see a fighting type at the top of the leaderboard for a Solo Run series for once. I did a playthrough of Emerald with Makuhita, and boy let me tell you, it was like pulling teeth trying to decide between Bulk Up and Belly Drum. I don't blame the hesitance to commit to one here at all. In fact, I think Fighting types in Emerald have a hard time picking a moveset in their early to mid game. You want fighting stab, but early game fighting moves often have some drawback (multi hit, moves last, set damage, ect.), so sometimes you want 2. Bulk Up feels like a no brainer to teach ASAP, but then that leaves only 1-2 moveslots (depending on if you are running 1 or 2 fighting STAB) for teaching some combination of Dig, Secret Power, Return, and Rock Tomb. And you hate to have to use Rock Tomb, but Rock Fighting coverage does really nice in Emerald.

    Hooray; time for a run with my favourite Fighting type, or at least, my favourite primary Fighting type. It's surprisingly not a type that I've been too fond of and Hariyama here was the first one I ever liked using on my team.
    0:40 - I rather liked Hariyama's aesthetic; the head shaped helped make it less human and the yellow + blue colour scheming was nice. Admittedly, it was primarily through Makuhita that I was drawn to the Pokémon. Until Morepeko came along and summed up my three emotions, if I thought about ever being in a Mystery Dungeon style situation, I was sure I'd end up a Makuhita.
    2:14 - Rock Tomb is however your one option for Flying types. I also noticed that your Hidden Power nature ended up being Ghost, which is pretty fantastic given Ghost is still Physical in this gen.
    5:18 - I understand the concept behind the original Rock moves, having most of them be high power but low accuracy... the problem is that they didn't given them enough power to compensate for the low accuracy. I suppose the likes of Rock Throw and Rock Tomb are meant to be starting moves for Rock type Pokémon and to eventually be replaced by Rock Slide, though the power jump to "original strongest" Rock move isn't much.
    6:36 - Man, this would have been a cool fight to see animated. Makuhita vs Hariyama, both Vital Throwing each other, both eating berries in sync; rather funny how the roles are reversed though. Usually it's the protagonist using the lower stage Pokémon. An holy heck, 6:48 has Brawly pulling off a protagonist style upset! Unfortunate for you but amazing to witness!
    10:29 - I'm unsurprised the Guts strategy didn't work. Hariyama is too slow to take advantage of it.
    14:10 - The zoom-in on Vital Throw there was absolutely hilarious. Poor neglected Vital Throw. You're treating Hariyama as a Normal/Ground type right now.
    18:05 - I think this is the first time in one of your playthroughs that the Shell Bell is going to be put to you use. Very neat to see; I think my own Hariyama used one in my Emerald team.
    21:58 - Did... did Sumo the Hariyama just get beaten by a Luvdisc? Ouch. Really don't think Belly Drum is going to be helpful for the slow fighter that is Hariyama.
    25:52 - I feel it would have been better getting rid of Belly Drum and keeping Hidden Power Ghost, or have a different move in that spot. Seems strange to me to have both Belly Drum and Bulk Up, with the latter helping boost Hariyama's ability to take a hit and feels better suited for a solo challenge.
    27:40 - Your persistence at using Belly Drum is rather hilarious at this point.
    31:49 - Holy heck; I knew it was doing well but I didn't think Hariyama was doing this well. To think he'd potentially be even quicker if you continued to favour Bulk Up over Belly Drum. Given you weren't a fan of Hariyama before, what are your thoughts on him now after this solo challenge?

  • @PKMN649
    @PKMN649 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    So, about Guts it is best when you're outspending and one shotting everything. It's why Rattata/Raticate is so dominant as a Pokemon in challenge runs. Hariyama is best with an item like Leftovers which is you obviously don't have access to.
    Also about the rival, them having Torchick means that the route to Mayvile they'll have peck and wing attack between Combusken and Wingull so that one would be the strongest rival against Hariyama.

    20:48 water and ice are two sides of the same coin, essentially, even in Pokémon, sadly (basically all Water Types learning most Ice Moves up until Gen V), and this kind of puzzle would have been impossible with water.
    In regards to the TMs specifically, it is indeed ridiculously late for Water Pulse but they kind of had their hands tied, to an extent: up until Gen VI (excluded), Gym Leaders always gave out TMs that were new to that Generation, almost always of their own Type, and you need to get Surf (which isn't new or a TM anyway) earlier to get to Sootopolis, so... They either had to create something strong but still with a lower BP than Surf, like say Scald two Gens early (and that would have meant Misty giving you a really strong Move really early on in FRLG), or have it like this.
    So I can understand why they made this choice; Water Pulse was a new Water Move that they likely wanted to have as a TM, after all, so they just tied it to the Water Gym Leader regardless of his placement in the progression.

    Fun fact about rock moves: they do not get better for the majority of Rock-typed Pokemon. All good Rock-typed Pokemon now have very powerful or overtuned signature moves, so these complaints that you have against Rock move distribution will basically always remain because Rock types have to be “the powerful and wide-hitting but inaccurate type”. God, Rock typing is such a debuff, and unlike Ice type, will not be changed soon because there are no issues with its “balance”.

    I remember having had a Hariyama and having enjoyed having it. That said, when you use a team there are hidden costs or benefits to exp types you have in your team. For example, Clefable is relatively weak, but by having it through the second half of your journey you save experience for the rest of your team.
    In the other hand, a fluctuating pokemon may seem strong in your team but by having it you're making the rest of your team slightly weaker when you're forced to give it more experience.

    Concerning Guts and pre-poisoning yourself, I don't know how helpful this would be with slower Pokemon like Hariyama, but if you have a held item that gives you HP each turn like Shell Bell or Leftovers it would probably help offset the poison damage and make it more viable. Might not be conducive with Belly Drum though. I feel like Belly Drum would synergize really well with Resto-Chesto strats, but being at half HP with poison with no way to heal and keep the attack boost isn't fun so it would be really hard to stack it with Guts. I think personally I would've picked either Bulk Up or Belly Drum; being locked out of a STAB move just seemed to hold Hariyama back, and you might not even need to set up on some teams. Hariyama probably would've cleaned Sydney's clock with just Brick Break alone.
    I'm really glad this Pokemon's getting the spotlight, though! I was like you; I didn't really like how this thing looked and I always had Blaziken and Breloom in my team so I didn't see the point, but while playing Gen 7 I ran into a Makuhita while training who beat up my lead. I caught her out of respect, named her Chyna, and she became a permanent part of my team after that, obliterating almost everything she ran into. Needless to say, I like this Pokemon now and I'm not surprised at all it did so good.

    I'm curious, how do you manage your EVs in gen3 runs. I don't remember you mentioning vitamins. Also not sure if you already use them, but starting in gen3 there are EV reducing berries that allow you to get rid of undesirable EVs (for example sp. attack for hariyama). That could allow you to get in some additional speed EVs to outspeed a few more pokemon. To outspeed the metagross at Lv.67 you'd need ~210 speed EVs or ~ 140 speed EVs with the jolly nature. 210 seems like a bit of a stretch, but with jolly it should be doable. Of course it's generally better to have a nature that bosst one of the highest stats, so I'm not sure if jolly would be worth it.
    Also I know it's a first playthrogh, so it's obviously not gonna be optimized, I'm just spitballing.
    On the topic of fighting types (and how much better they are in later gens compare to gen1): I'm really looking forward to seeing a rematch between Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee in Gen4 or later. Hitmonchan just makes so much more sense with the elemental punches being physical (and with a usable stab move...).

    The +Speed and -Special Attack nature would have been a much better choice for an Emerald solo playthrough with Hariyama while the Adamant nature is just complete overkill, considering the already high 120 Base Attack stat.
    Moves like Belly Drum are inefficient on their own and reqire not only a lot more planning in multiple ways, than Bulk Up, but Belly Drum also wants to be paired with a relatively speedy user.
    Holding on to Buik Up and Belly Drum at the same time is a massive mistake in my opinion, unless you have something specific in mind.
