Dugtrio ISN'T Banned in Gen 3 OU. But Why?

- Pokemon Gen 3 Competitive Singles is my favourite format. Despite being banworthy in every single other Generation of OU, Arena Trap is fully legal in Gen 3. While in Later Gens Dugtrio is centralizing and can trap important targets very safely and reliably, Dugtrio is a manageable presence in Gen 3 that struggles to get in safely and also sacrifices momentum when it Locks into a move to trap something.
I'm having a "Live Wo-Chien Reaction" to all of this great information.
Only Jim knows about the viability of Dugtrio. All other sources of information are liars and are inaccurate.

Please read all of the below text. It's absolutely imperative.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Pokemon better than their evolutions are few and far between. Chansey is one of them in some scenarios. Pokemon toys School could learn a lot from certain Pokemon designs, for example, Gholdengo and its iconic visual appeal. Maybe one day, I'll get to explain How I won the biggest Pokemon tournament, if I ever do that. For now, I haven't won the biggest tournament.

Iron Brian definitely needs our help to reach Paldea quickly and safely with his middling 77 base speed
Middling? More like mediocre.

@@Feroror Bad? More like Abysmal
Ahh i see his place in trick room teams already
Bad? More like unusable
imagine if dugtrio got renamed to "dugdugdug"
Honestly with dudunsparce, this is a possible evolution lol
or diglettdiglettdiglett
And Diglett to Doug?
I like Dugcubed
@@Royyy13me too. 1³ is the same as 1x3 anyway so it works!
I always find it funny when I trap their skarm with magneton then my magneton is trapped by dug, then my porygon2 traps their dug. Just a chain of carnage.
Have you tried the same team but with Hariyama over Mag?
@@Imitationisthow a harillama can defeat skarm?
Arena trap is also legal in Gen 8 LC and although Diglett is one of the best mons there, it is not alone and faces competition from Trapinch.
Until the tera nation attacked... yikes
Tbh I think it was also the fact it got sd
Because I doubt tera alone would have done it without it not just being an efficient trapper, but it also actually threatening a sweep with, say, tera dark sucker punch
It's sad how Iron Brian is at least getting some recognition, yet everyone's just forgotten about the future paradox form of Dachsbun, Iron Breads
And it's past form, big wheat
Iron Breads? No...
It's *Iron Buns* !!

Came for the gen 3 ou analysis, stayed for Iron Brian and Great Neck
Without Dugtrio, the meta would probably be DDTar and Heracross spam. Not to mention Blissey would become even harder to deal with. Wouldn't be nearly as varied.
Very similar to Snorlax in GSC. It's the lynchpin that holds the meta together
@@Victini0510 what would take over if snorlax was banned?
I always heard that snorlax is over centralizing in gen 2.
Dugtrio is also legal in Gen 4 UU :)
Although I think it's possible that it could get banned if Gen 4 UU was more developed.
Arena trap got banned in DPP after the format ended, its just they lock tiers/dont update the smogon sets. But yes for a time Dugtrio was UU with arena trap.
@@BladeRabbit arena trap is still legal in uu I believe
@@BladeRabbit Nah Arena trap is banned in OU but not UU. Google "DPP Arena Trap (Dugtrio) [Arena Trap is banned]" and go to post #13
@@tyler4965 so is Sand Veil by the way. They are only banned from OU. Because of this, Dugtrio is unusable in OU, but can be used in UU.
Wait arena trap is legal in gen4 uu? Wtf
Another factor is that team preview tells you exactly who you need Dugtrio for, so it's easier to use.
What team preview? Is that feature in Showdown?
You really don’t know what team preview is?
@@alejandrop.s.3942 Team Preview is when you get to see the opponent's team at the start and pick your lead. Not a feature until Gen 5! Not a Showdown invention.
@@thechronocrator I see, I only played till gen 4. Thanks for answering.
I'd argue that team preview makes dug worse, since opponents will always be wary of its presence and can play smartly. This is pretty much exactly why team preview destroyed zoroark
I really dug this video on our favorite area trapper's balanced role in ADV
i don't get it
I need more gen 3 OU lore
Another big addition for Dugtrio in gen 4 - life orb. It got to keep similar power while not getting locked into earthquake.
Youve single handedly made me have a love for gen 3 ou
I’ve theorized that former OU king Tyranitar, has made it’s way to the RU tier, only to defeat controversial Pokémon Iron Mugulis and it’s crew. Tyranitar’s typing makes it good against Iron Fellow and Spidops, and the SpDef boost it gets allows it to fair well against Mugulis. With a simple moveset of Rock Blast, Crunch, Earthquake and protect, it can defeat all 3, leaving only Garganacl and Old Money, which Iron Brian can go up against, to help our altruistic hero. Let’s hope Tyranitar and Iron Brian can end these menaces once and for all
Surprised you didn't mention Explosion as a gen 3 pivot move. It definitely does enough chip damage to allow Dugtrio to KO.
That’s such a hard commitment that I think everything said about Baton Pass applies to Explosion/Selfdestruct as well
Ghost Types are also common in gen 3, most common being Gengar who only takes damage from Sand, Burn and direct attacks.
Gengar also packs WoW to neuter physical attackers.
@@Imitationist pretty sure Gengar is the only common ghost type in Gen 3 singles. And as common as it is, a lot of Metagross and Claydol sets still choose to run Explosion anyway. I wouldn't have mentioned Explosion if it wasn't a commonly used move.
protect exists on a lot of explosion targets
Dugtrio when theres a superman team: 💀
Thanks for getting it right. Too many people say it was gen 6 first, when it was gen 7 as you said
I think because there are enough Pokemon in OU with the Flying type and or Levitate ability as well as the fact that Dugtrio cannot stat boost or do cheap moves like Wobbuffett.
Dugtrio gets checked by any Flying type and Porygon2.
Love the gen 3 ou analysis. Really highlighted its differeneces from future metas and the explanations were quite thorough but also concise. Really like your vids!
I think kind of shows that in the right context, even very op abilities can be healthy for the game. It seems that area trap is only op because the ability to switch got easier along with with dugtrio getting slightly bette. If switching moves never happen, area trap may be not oppressive, though I agree that be less fun for the game.
This channel is such a gem for gen 3 enjoyers.
yesssss
Tyranitar: AAAHH!!!! WHY AREN'T YOU BANNED??
Dugtrio: **traps Tyranitar and Earthquakes it**
Tyranitar: NOOOOOOO!!!!!
Your videos have been recommended to me recently. I've never really played gen3 ou but that's about to change! Nice content
These Gen 3 vids make me want to get back into playing it since I dropped after Gen 9 came out.
If Jim had simply switched Milo straight into Charizard at 8:30, Jim would have not been able to eliminate Jim’s Blissey so easily. An amateur error by Jim who has a long way to go before reaching Jim’s level.
Legit one of the best Pokémon videos, this was super entertaining hit also informative
Stickerbrush Symphony is such a beautiful song
I'm glad jimothy made these over 10 minutes it makes me very happy to see him get some fat stacks
Decided to subscribe in support of Iron Brian. Haven't kept up with pokemon since the 3ds but I'm enjoying your videos enough to consider getting back into it
This first time I heard the new paradox coballion name and was genuinely terrified that they called it Brian for a second
Ngl was kinda caught off guard when I heard my name at 1:03 LMAO
I hope that Iron Brian will be a valuable asset against any future iron mugulis activity. It is good we have someone who knows how a future paradox thinks and acts.
Very good and informative video Jimothy. We appreciate your work.
Kinda interesting how buffing both entry hazards and pivot moves didn’t cancel out, and actually escalated the overall power level of the format in a lot of ways.
Like, the intended counterplay to volt switch/u-turn was clearly supposed to be toxic spikes or stealth rock, but the two things kinda just ran parallel to each other and caused significant power creep. Less slap-fighting, more deciding games based on cutting-edge team building. Mixed attacking sets fading away and the rise of weather/terrain/etc centric teams are probably a consequence of power creep making less efficient/streamlined teams less viable
Ngl I thought that in later gens ghost types in general are immune to trapping, like not just shadow tag, but also arena trap. I guess not. Great video, this really shows how many big changes were introduced across generations.
Ghosts are also immune to Arena Trap, most of Dugs targets aren't Ghosts though
They are immune to Arena Trap and all other forms of trapping, not just Shadow Tag.
@@jimothycool Aaaah I see, that makes sense, thanks for clearing it up
The Spirit of Great Tusk (Peace Be Upon Him) lives on in Iron Brian.
I've learned more about Gen 3 OU in the last 3 days than I have in my entire life
Why are Iron Brian's stats odd? Is he secretly a past paradox form!
Hey thanks for making gen 3 vids like this, it’s like a way more fun chess
JIMOTHY COOL YOU FOUL!!!!
BY MAKING A DUGTRIO VIDEO,YOU ALLOWED DUGTRIO TO ARENA TRAP IRON BRIAN AND LET IRON MUGULIUS COMMIT ITS WAR CRIMES!!!
YOU DOOMED US ALL
Ngl this gen 3 content is really makin me consider that subscribe button
Iron Brian and Great Neck are joining the lore!!!
Welcome to the team, Iron Brian!
I realized i was a pokenerd when I recognized Iron Brian's base stats as literally Dusk Mane Necrozma's base stats to the tee. I wonder if that has lore implications.
For those wondering, Iron Brians stats are Necrozma-dusk manes
It's also worth mentioning that sometimes Dugtrio ran Choice Scarf to out speed Tapu Koko if it were to try to U-turn out.
Loving all the gen 3 videos!
I like how Jimothy’s accent makes Iron and Brian kinda rhyme. It satisfies my smooth American brain.
thank you for making this video.
I was wondering the same.
Dug facilitates stally teams? Isnt one of the main styles facilitated by dig special offensive?
In modern gens dug facilitates stall
@tomgorey9294 8:03 . Yes I'm aware that it does that in modern gens, but that's not what jim is saying at all here.
also in bkc's video on the same topic months back, most of it covered how dug relates to offensive progress.
Love the content man keep it up!
10:40
Skyhops patreon is a threat!!! His favorite Pokémon is Iron Mugulis!!!
Iron Brian, my beloved.
I'll make sure you make it here safelt.
As an old head I have no idea what all the extra fluff for the iron stuff is but seems the youngins enjoy it lol
I think if Dugtrio is paired with a mon that has previously either cause some serious damage to the mon that Dugtrio needs to defeat but it can't OHKO by itself before being killed, or that it has performed some form of sacrificial move to dent the enemy's stats (memento, screech, tail whip...) it's a real deal (pure-clear body users tho) . Magneton and Dugtrio together are fearsome. But by itself it's not broken, at least not in gen3.
Dugtrio is such an interesting Pokemon! I didn't know about its role in the metagame
Can you make a video about your preferred colours for different types of balloons?
Iron Brian will surely be helpful with it's wonderful typing against iron mugulis and his gang
Please keep the Gen 3 content coming! I never have played one competitive game of Pokémon but I love Gen 3!!!!!
1:00 isn’t that in the distortion world why would Brian want to go there?
dugtrio is the kinda mon you hate to play against but hate even more to use yourself
So Iron Mugulis' stats are that of Primal Kyogre, Great Neck's are Zekrom's and Iron Brian's are Dusk Mane Necrozma's
Can u cover some gen3 random battles strategies/pokemon variants?
Anyone who says arena trap is the issue is crazy. Let’s see them win with Trapinch.
So basically, Dugtrio became a problem when Stealth Rock got introduced.
More proof Stealth Rock was a mistake
Enjoying all this gen 3 ou content
I always wondered why Dugtrio (and to a lesser extent Magneton) didn't have a Duo form
Brian an upstanding gent frfr
don’t forget ghost types are immune to trapping too
Trapping abilities are awesome. I'm not a fan of banning them. I've lost to them but that's part of the fun.
Can't believe I was so quick to judge Iron Brian. He really does want to help prevent certain calamity.
As a fellow Brian, I can get behind Iron Brian.
Isn't teleport also a pivot move in Gen 3 or does it just automatically fail? Serebii says it switches in trainer battles
iirc teleport goes last
@@gefadsfrrewdgfbt5811
Is that also true in Gen 3? I thought that was a later change but let me check after this real quick lol.
That being said even if that is the case, that isn't necessarily a detriment, that's part of why Teleport was so busted in Gen 8 I think.
The slow pivot is hella useful for the mon who switches in.
I would think if it works at all in PvP then it counts, but if it has the negative priority then it's straight up better than Volt/Turn would be if it was in Gen 3. But I don't ladder Gen 3 so I'm not gonna pretend like my guess is super educated.
But I see, Teleport does nothing in Gen 3, ah well
Teleport didn't swap your Pokemon out until Generation 8.
I'm shocked that this video wasn't about tyranitar. It seems like it was ahead of its time in this gen. It's legitimately format defining and for a lot of people that is the definition of something bannable.
iron brian needs our help!! (real o_O)
you make me want to play gen 3 ou now
i wonder sometimes
Skarmory's best friend in ADV OU
Would arena trap still be banned if it worked only one time like Intrepid sword?
Mostly likely yes. In later gens Dugtrio usually only was used to kill one mon on the opposing team and often already used single-use items (Focus Sash, Z Crystal) to achieve that. What made it OP wasn't getting multiple kills but being able to pick and remove one pivotal mon that the opponent can't win the subsequent match-up without.
It's amazing that dugtrio turned from being OU in gen 3 to NU in later generations
Cause Arena Trap got banned.
Whatching your videos for the content. 🙂
Whatching your videos for the Iron Mugulis lore. 😎
Honestly jim I think you should sing your outro
Dugtrio moment
It's all fun and games until Iron Dugulis turns up
BRIAN, LOOK OUT!
one pokemon that deserves to be banned (or at least soft-banned) is the dpp jirachi.
this pokemon is fucking unbalanced.
even smogon themselves admited that it is too unpredictable to have a counter.
I hate that it has got para-flinch.
this combo is very anti-competitive.
I can understand why they banned king's rock but not paraflinch, that thing is stronger than king's rock.
the closest I can think to a hard counter is a choice banded adamant nature rhyperior.
one earthquake from this is enough to guarantee a OHKO on any set that lacks substitute.
When inner focus dragonite actually becomes useful
@@noahanderson8688 *laughs in Ice Punch*
We have sabotage the train of Iron Brian, so that it lands in Kanto, where it won't come in the way of Iron Mugulis.
While Dugtrio was still legal in GEN 4, I was playing out of my fucking mind with this thing and magnezone.
I do not know what i was on
but yeah shits broken, but I never really found it having as many issues in Generation 3.
10:30 I want you to talk about item clause and heavy duty boots.
"how can this pokemon use heavy duty boots? it doesn't have feet?"
And you know because they're broken
Iron mugulous is gonna be so broken can’t wait for vgc debut
I wouldn't mind arena trap in gen 8 OU, anything to get rid of clefable
Unfortunately, the Clefable Trainer would also have Dugtrio to trap and kill your Dugtrio to clear the way for their Clefable to filibuster the battle.
@@autobotstarscream765 I guess so. Once I tried mean look Bisharp to get rid of it, but after I put it on the team, I didn't find a single clefable for 5 matches.
@@jacobmorris6357 Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Clefable Trainer would use Dug to hunt down and trap your Bisharp.
Great Neck will save us from Iron Mugulis. Thats why Arceus made him and Iron Brian.
Apparently, Iron Brian is plotting with Old Money to establish a monopoly over the Pokeball industry.
