How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

Admittedly, we were bit nervous to click publish on this video. It's felt really uncomfortable keeping this from you all for nearly a year...when we set out on this journey, we promised ourselves to ALWAYS keep it real. Guys, I used to work in the construction industry. Sadly between the convoluted building codes (intertwining of city/state/province/ township/village, etc.) and the complexity of how buildings must be built in order to pass inspections, the end result is that the owner of the building is often left in the dark on so many of the incredibly important details. Knowing what I know, it was hard to watch you guys beat yourselves up over the mistakes and failures that were visited upon you and your project. You guys are the essence of kindness, goodness and sense of fair play that I think you expect to see in others and unfortunately isn't always there. I'm so glad that you found Dumpy and even though we all can't be there in person to support you, you know that we do. Hugs, Jules ❤

@@debmadden4157 has to be the engineers/ architects but I think the problem is they decided not to use architects. That stupid staircase code issue was so dumb. It drove me crazy for days and I couldn't find a solution because I never would have dreamed of adding a massive staircase to the exterior. The expense alone makes me gasp and the end design is dreadful and detracts from the original concept dreadfully.
Having a man like Dumpy is wonderful. Honesty and integrity are in short supply right now and he is s both. I’m very happy for you.

My father was an ethical and professional builder. When I was a kid my parents decided to have a pool built. The pool business and the labor did not match up. Careless company. The men hired to build the pool were not qualified or were shoddy workers. Australian codes are quite clear. Simple things like the curve of the walls, off centre underwater lighting and dreadful sloping tiling. Once my father stepped in and stayed on site, things changed dramatically. Pool company had to make good and the men doing the job had some clear training that benefitted them. It was obvious they were constructing to a lower standard. Just atrocious the stairs were that uneven. Let alone the missing tower strengthening left to fail. Again in Australia we had a solar panel national drive by the government. Non industry businesses popped up everywhere. Dodgy ones hired 'boys', teenagers. These kids had no idea. Some fell from heights and died. Work delivered was sub standard. Be vigilant.

Good Morning from Australia, Guys!! (7.01 am here) . None of us can imagine the burden of the knowledge you've carried these past 12 months and more, while even through all of that, pushing forward to bring us the stories of your lives, and giving us laughter, light, optimism, and in some times even the troubles you've been able to share. What I do know is that you're both very precious to all of us, and for that, we fully understand the need for disclosure, only when it's safe to share with us - if ever.
The only thing that we need to know is that you're all ok - and that things progress and that you have decent people looking after your interests, and in all of that issue's heartsoreness, you're still able to find the sweet spots in each day, and still able to smile, and you're still " ours " .
Love all that you bring to us, and I'm so very grateful you're still able to come share the tea with us each week and allow us glimpses into the building of your paradises x 2.

First, you should not feel you have to divulge all. Legal issues and confidentiality are important and I believe all of us that watch your building and renovating adventures understand this.
Second, I give you two flowers for how the two of you work together through all the ups and curves of building. I am a divorcee and I know the pressures building and renovating can create in a not-well-balanced relationship. Kudos to you two, not only highlighting how you two work, you also cover the need for self-care.
To be clear, I TOTALLY agree. We can choose what we share and what we keep private, the issue is this is such a massive mistake that in bleeds into every decision, every project, everything. It's a big reason why we had to put the project on hold...telling half truths has really started to weigh on us.

Ok but … the error with meeting local code is not acceptable. The stairwell issue should not have arisen. Sounds like somebody isn’t being a real professional and not backing their work, which is pretty egregious.

Glad to hear you are getting legal assistance. Being a paralegal, I have “ bitten my tongue” about this issue because I did not have all the facts and didn’t know if a lawsuit/getting legal assistance was the way to go.
Having said that, I am in business for myself (not construction). I have made mistakes over the years. One of my senior clients told me that we are human and we going to make mistakes. The true mark of who we are is how we acknowledge the error and make amends to fix/correct the error and make the client whole. I have always tried to live up to that.
It appears that you have given this business the chance to make amends and it seems inclined not to take care of the error. As such, you need to do what you need to do.

My sister built a house and for numerous reasons fired the old contractor. She had the same problem as you with the stairs. While on his initial visit her new contractor pointed out the stairs before she said anything and said in the industry they are called 'The Widow Maker'.
I love that, despite all the issues with the build, you never wanted your followers to dogpile on to a local business, and have kept names and details private. I have so much respect for that decision. But you are correct when you say enough is enough. If the former contractors are unwilling to privately cooperate in righting some wrongs, then it’s time to tell your side of the story.

Oh, absolutely! Thankfully so much of the work we did ourselves, got materials on sale and stored them, etc. Otherwise, this project could've easily bankrupted us.

I feel like women have been working to "take", or "take back" situations for centuries, so I can entirely relate to what you are saying. I think a lot of us knew something else was going on, but were content to wait until you were ready to share, if you wanted to share at all. I would like to give a shout out to Dumpy---what a stellar fellow to take this on, to have a sense of humour, to work as part of a team, to remain calm. He seems to me like a traditional Old Nova Scotian---excellent patience, humour and work ethic. (I'm biased, it's where my family is from.)

I have been watching since you were in that RV from tbe 90's, long before the pandemic. I bought a cabin on a ton of acres with my sister and her husband... partially because you inspired me. I am sitting there now, watching nature, with my little dog in my lap. Guys, Don't worry about withholding information from your followers. It's your life and your choice to reveal as you wish. As long as you are only revealing truths about your contractors, and have evidence to support your assertions that may be challenged, you should have no legal problems with a court. (Your videos provide lots of clear evidence of code violations and your receipts for materials should suffice to get some of your additional expenses reimbursed.) Unfortunately, you cannot claim expenses for your own labor, but can claim labor expenses if you have records/receipts/checks/credit card invoices of paying others to perform labor correcting previous mistakes). 🏳🌈🏳🌈

So true and so unfair. At least they get content out of it. But I’m sure they’d have preferred to have been spared such terrible egregious mistakes by their former contractors. It’s been hard watching them having to go through this.

It's been clear for a while that there was more to the situation that was meeting the eye. Yes mistakes are made that are genuine "mistakes" - they're part of a bit project. BUT as you indicate, when there is criminal negligence from a service provider that SHOULD have had the necessary expertise to recognize when performing their duty that there was something wrong, recourse to the courts is the only way forward to get remedy. You have both always appeared to be honest and the stress was clear to see. I hope and trust a compromise can be achieved that rectifies the wrongs done. When you were first talking about building this house I gave you an advice which I'm now going to repeat for your viewers who end up reading: get an architect. Thinking, designing and managing all these messy parts is something people study for and will eventually save money and a whole lot of stress

I hope you two realize how much you add to Sunday. I can only imagine what you have been through over the course of the months that things have played out in the background. It is a real joy to see you working with Dumpy to fix, modify and change what is needed. At some point you will have an incredible home for you and your 4 legged friends.
