How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

You'd think that maybe, just maybe we'd take everything going on at The Land as an opportunity to have some down time LOL...not likely! I'm really happy that we switched gears and focused on this project. This one was a lot of behind the scenes planning and coordinating but it's going to be the PERFECT place to host all our loved ones this summer. I know we mentioned it in the video but if any of you have suggestions of what might look good for a backsplash, we're all ears! Hope you enjoyed this one...p.s the sunset lake swims need to happen more often, they are MAGIC ⭐
How are y’all getting in that water? I’m in the southern US and my pool water is still cold. These cooler than normal nights seem to be out doing the heat of the day.
Time for a boat ❤❤❤
Omg. Adopt me. Please. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@ericeric363 I’m in the South and mine is like bath water 🥵
@@tylerandtodd White appliances and white walls in a somewhat traditional space…. I would keep it white tile and clean and classic. Backsplash’s are the worst trend catchers….. that house can’t take trends and would stick out like a horses ass….
My 24 year old son is gay but has never been in a relationship, and when I watch the two of you interact together, I am so hopeful that he will find the one that will be his lifelong partner. I love your channel! The music, the flow, the silly jokes! Keep being here please! The world needs you both!
Applause for saving the existing cupboards rather than ripping them out and replacing them - better for your pocketbook and better for the planet! The kitchen looks beautiful - nice work!
I fully expect Jazz n Chrystal to come floating over on their new floating cabin.
I was wondering if Jazz and Crystal were on the same lake! Are they?
@@peggynorton5145 omg! I was wondering the same thing. That would be so cool!
I’m a social worker and it’s been a stressful week. But watching your videos just makes me feel so at peace and happy. Thank you.
Hope next week is a better one xox
You are all so kind.
Concrete counter tops are number one regret of homeowners doing kitchen remodels. They are very difficult to maintain and keep looking good. So great decision!
That's what we've heard - really happy we went this route!
Concrete countertops are very easy to take care of and keep looking beautiful bees wax Melt It and apply a thin coat buff it well Do this about once a month or so More or less depending on how much you are cooking in the kitchen
@@walterpiar2859who wants to service their countertops once a month. Wax and buff.
I’m *so* glad you chose white appliances - they help brighten the room!
@TheJojo. I was wondering if any other fans of white appliances would post. I am a big fan of white myself. I opted for white myself. It is classic and then color and stainless decor looks fabulous.
Another white fan here... anything better than stainless. The clone kitchen look is such a tired cliché. Coloured vintage appliances are cool as well, but white is clasic and modern at the same time. Gives a nice clean look.
White appliances for me too : )
I thought I was the only person alive who likes white appliances!
Sadly I was gifted a black stove (grateful for it nonetheless) and I feel all mismatched now!
@@TheJojo01902 I love the white too! It’s so clean and bright. Plus, I loved the pulls.
Just what I needed today …for it to be Sunday! Tyler and Todd with smiles on their faces, a glass of wine, your pups and squirrel! Life is good! See you next Sunday. Have a great week.
See you next Sunday! Have an awesome week
@@kathleenpietka589 I love it when the whole family is together. Squirrel is such a little love queen.
Love that squirrel was keeping you guys busy....she rules!
A white subway tile backsplash would be perfect for the kitchen. Tile is definitely the move because it's so much easier to keep clean than drywall and white subway tile in particular is classic enough that it never looks bad.
Very durable, neutral and never goes out of style. Goes with the cabinets and the new countertop.
Subway tile to keep it white 🤍 and light.
This channel is one of the treasures of You Tube. Although its an epic lesson in building a home from scratch , renovating etc the real pearl in this channel is seeing the relationship you two share . The affection / respect / give and take / banter - everything that makes for a good relationship .
"Jump in the sailboat and go for a drive." HAHAHAHAHA! Guys, I absolutely love you! The cabin looks fantastic! I'm so happy I started following your adventures years ago! You two rock! I really want everything to work out in your favor for the situation on the land. You've worked so hard to make that place a sanctuary for yourselves and others to visit. It's beautiful and you deserve to see your dream become reality, in every way.
Backsplash idea: Figure out what kind of pattern you want then contact a glassmaking studio that does glass fusing. Turn the project into a couples activity - work with the studio owner and they'll be able to teach you how to cut and assemble the pieces to create the individual tiles then install them just like regular tiles. Best wishes from Washington State!!!
Fun & beautiful idea!
♡ Thanks ♡
The upgrading you guys have done on the lake house is phenomenal. I loved it at the start - and nothing compares to how wonderful it now is. Go you!
sustainable kings saving the old cabinets! I always push my clients to reface their kitchens rather than ripping out perfectly good boxes- it’s just a waste!
There is just something about your channel that makes me happy. Thanks
Thanks for being here!
@@marthaobrien3742 it’s them 100%.
Oh wow I love it! It’s crazy how much brighter the kitchen is. What a bonus to have the old stuff removed…I’d call that a great day! It never ceases to amaze me how much you’ve taught yourselves and all the lessons learned from mistakes. All that with humor and grace! Love you both so much ❤
I just adore you two! I love how you respect the quality of your cabinets and kept them while putting in new countertops. Also that you recycle appliances. Your new ones will hopefully last as long as the old ones. “I would take appliances over sex any day”. LOL I agree!!! I think anyone who loves cooking, etc. would agree! You two make me laugh, cry, think, so thank you for these shared moments. You also have so many teachable moments, couples with valuable information. “ I do not do mousetraps!” The kitchen is beautiful! Swim, hydrate, stay safe and happy! ❤
Your response I think encapsulates the thoughts of many of us who watch this channel .❤ from Ontarion
I absolutely love the changes you’ve made. And each step of your life and your living situation be in fifth wheel, property in a DOME home, your beautiful garden and your pond. And then you have the opportunity of buying a Lakeside home. Also trials and tribulations and a lot pertaining to your container homes those are always difficult. I have found. Our friends decided to do that leaving California and entering into Nevada. And ran into similar problems, financial and legal. Everything was settled in the end. But without a lot of headaches along the way. I love how you work together. And you support each other constantly. More couples need to be this way.❤.
The updated kitchen looks fantastic, I would love a deep sink like that. Totally get you on the excitement of new appliances, never in a million years thought a new dyson vacuum would bring me such joy but here we are 🤣.
So glad to see a kitchen makeover that retains the original cabinets and for the reasons you mentioned. Why do we see reno shows that toss out solid wood for MDF white stuff? Oh, yes, because that's what the sponsors of those shows want. Kudos guys!
Just imagine yourself back to when you're 18 and someone tell you you'll be SO excited in getting new countertops in your home. How our priorities change as we grow older. Tomorrow, I'm getting a new slide-in gas range, one of those industrial high-end jobbers and I'm SO excited...lol. I really like your appliances, they're so cool! The inside of the fridge looks so dramatic. Your OCD will kick in and you'll have everything in your fridge assembled in some order of sorts, labels facing out, of course. Live in Houston, wish I had had a Jackery. 5 days without power. Pure hell.
God, I love you guy. Thank you so much for the Jackery recommendation -- you even put down details on your house's electrical usage -- immediately after I was wondering what would be needed. You two are THE BEST TH-camrs. I love how helpful, polite and the general integrity you bring to everything you do. Hugs from an Ontarian Canadian :) Oh yeah, you never fail to make me laugh -- 80% for Eddie's guarding and your rock/paper/scissors re who goes first in the water.
Such a pleasure watching you all ,i look forward to Sundays,i always smile when i watch, two of the nicest guys ive not met lol..have a wonderful week x
White appliances- I love them!
Your lake reminds me of the lake that I grew up on in Michigan. In the 1950’s most families just stayed in the summer & we lived there year round and the quietness allowed the water sounds, the weather and the birds so be heard so clearly…. Your few minutes of film, brought back lovely memories.Thank you both.
A Gram from MO❤
A gorgeous change in your kitchen, white is perfect. Your lakeside home is so beautiful and welcoming. Thank you for this lovely video. Cheers.
I'd like a tile backslash. My thoughts are not subway but a lite colored square tile. Handmade and unique maybe a shimmer, oyster shell shimmer. That beautiful lake side cottage/cabin deserves it.
The kitchen looks absolutely incredible!! And I must be old too because I have some serious fridge envy! It's been so hot here (Alberta) that I have been dreaming of living on a lake! You guys have some amazing properties and I love living vicariously through you! See you next Sunday! ❤
The two of you are amazing with a high work ethic. You are an inspiration to many.
You two bring such happiness to me every week. Thanks much!
For the backsplash, do a glass sheet! You can write notes and labels with a whiteboard marker, cleans super simple with no grout lines, and they're just extremely handy!
You two bring a smile to my face every time I tune in! As a fellow Nova Scotian. who also lives on a lake, I also sing the praises of Living Stone! They are an absolutely fantastic business to work with, nothing is a problem that can't be solved, and their stone cutters are beyond fabulous. The new look is is stellar and much more in keeping with your aesthetic! If you haven't already sorted your electrical panel, also consider putting your water pump onto your backup power supply- it's not such a problem in the summer because you have a water supply right outside the door but it's not fun in the winter. And if your sewage is pumped up into your septic field, maybe consider adding that as well.
The two of you lying on the floor for a wee cuddle in front of the dishwasher was so lovely.
Looks fab, guys!
Hugs from Ontario!❤
Very smart sticking with a metal dock. Wood is cheaper but it doesn't last as long and well made metal docks can be repaired in the future while wood usually just needs to be replaced.
Totally - when we found out how far out we'd have to go we knew right away it hard to be metal...anything else would be WAY too much maintenance!
So glad you’ve gone for an induction stove. I replaced my ceramic halogen Hob stove last year with an AEG induction stove. So much easier to cook on and keep clean. No possibility of anything getting burnt on.
Just had to say I love Tyler's Crocs!! And the kitchen turned out so much better and brighter than that dark green. Counters are fantastic and it was great that the sink could be made to match them! Love all the renovations ❤
Yes indeed those integrated sink basins make for a nice minimalist look; an architect's aesthetic if you will. I think this is why I find ideas about subway tile, or glass tile, or patterned tile so horrible. Sometimes less really is more.
Me too! Didn't those Crocs stand out? They made me smile just looking at them.
Might be fun when the lake house is complete to iinvite the previous owner back for a tour...
Love that idea!
Congrats on your beautiful new kitchen !!! Gorgeous appliances.
How relaxing to hang out by the lake and watching the boats !!! 🍷
Former owners: But...but we liked our dark green walls.
@@tylerandtodd I could have, would have and should have..he ll say...lol
The kitchen is beautiful and so much brighter…love it!!! 😁😁😁
For backslash perhaps a metal that matches the handles on the appliances? It would be easy to clean, work by the stove from the heat and the metals come with so many cool patterns!
Oh, I thought the counters WERE concrete! That sink ... NICE!
Okay boys, time to make Sangria with apples and pears!
I am SO happy you went with white appliances. They are beautiful.
That kitchen and the appliances look great. You always make things look nice and are so handy with things. You guys are.a.womans dream!
So very sorry you two are experiencing so many problems with contractors. You are two amazing people and so creative, I really enjoy watching all he things you tackle. Best of luck for a good outcome with your issues. Keep up he amazing work.💓💓💙
Lol, you guys made me think of a little wisdom I gave my niece who's 22. I told her, "You know you're a grownup when a new vacuum gets you excited." Also, The Perfect Storm is a great movie..

with the right sealer, Concrete Countertops can work..epoxy coat?
The kitchen looks fantastic! Whatever material you use for the backslash, ceramic or glass, keep it white or transparent. I love your family: Tyler, Todd, Charlie, Eddie, and Squirrel!!! 🫂
Love new counter top and appliances! What a difference it makes in the kitchen. Dishwashers are a JOB to install. I put mine at 64 yrs. old. LOL. Old ladies can still do some things.
I’m amazed by your patience with instructions! My hero’s! ❤
I just love you guys. I sit here w the biggest smile when I watch your videos! Love the kitchen too!
The dogs need a ramp up out of the water onto the dock. If the dock wasn't as long they could swim back to shore but that far out they need a ramp. They are easy to build. Just get another piece of the metal dock, mount it at a 45⁰ angle into the water. Put some bars across it and cover with indoor/outdoor carpet. The bars give the dogs something to grab onto with their paws, and the carpet protects their claws from getting caught in the holes as well as provides better traction for them to get up. Some places I've seen also use those heavy rubber kitchen mats found in industrial kitchens with the holes in them. They are usually made from recycled tires and much more durable, as well as costly compared to the metal bars and indoor/outdoor rugs, but play around with whatever you think will work. I have seen a lot of them out there made from wood and metal but they are all home made. I don't think any company makes a dog ramp egress for them to climb out of the water. Of course you could just teach them how to climb a ladder with all the free time y'all have 😂 just kidding!
The Lake House is looking beautiful. Let us know when the Tyler & Todd B&B is opening so we can book the room! lol 😂
When we were going to build and when we own again we will be having a glass splash back.
For the following reasons
1. I can change colour to suit myself.
2. It is so much easier to stay clean.
3. If a piece of glass cracks even 10 years down the track I don’t have to remove and start again due to not being able to get the tile anymore
Just a thought
Thank you for bringing so much joy to my Sundays. ❤ Todd and Darcy should do a stand up tour together. His humor of late had been so fun. 😂
"How can I help? Just be your friend?" I'm definitely going to remember - and use - that one. We have one more year of college payments for our offspring, and then backup power is top of the list. We've lost power 4 times longer than 6 hours since April, and since we're on a well, no power means no water. No water, no pee-pee. That gets old very quickly.
Thanks for the great video. Have a wonderful week! ~Maarten
You two have had so much to stress you out and you are such good ppl, I just love to see you so happy.
Subway tiles or glass tiles 100% I do remodeling for a living and since those spaces are smaller I think white subway or white glass would be perfect! I love watching you guys!
Awesome video, you can just feel the love between you two. Glad to see all the fur kids and of course the kitchen is lovely. See you all Sunday❤
The changes in the kitchen are so beautiful. Now it looks like a welcoming place made for gathering. Have a wonderful week you five.
The kitchen makeover looks fabulous!! Much brighter too . I do suggest putting tile behind the stove … cleaning grease splatter will be so much easier than trying to wipe it off of a painted surface 👍 Both of your properties have come a long way - beautiful homes ! I know more needs to be done at The Land, but with Grumpy I think it will all work out ❤❤❤❤
The kitchen looks great with the white backsplash, and your new appliances are very modern, so they will last many, many years
Take time to relax and enjoy the lake
Love the changes to the kitchen guys ..... You 2 are adorable its lovely to see such a genuine and loving relationship.... Good luck in everything you do ... Love from Ireland ☘️ xx
You two are amazing. Love how you're working together to bring your lake home to a beautiful home to get away.
I have quartz counter top and same back splash and 2 walls covered with quartz. Makes the Kitchen easy to clean and looks elegant, uplifted.
Rocks sink, scissors float. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Limewash will stain. Porcelain with epoxy grout will hold up forever and never ever stain. I'm very fond of the little hexagons, they were in the kitchen my great grandfather built in 1901 until the house was sold around 2010 and still looked terrific.
You guys need to put a boat ramp in for your friends and family that have boats! How fun!

Short and sweet. Your kitchen is lovely. FYI , we replaced our stove, refrigerator, washer & dryer all at the same time. Yes, I know that feeling, it's almost giddy. Now, over 6 yrs later, they are still working, but no longer new. Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉.
Hey, best of luck on the legal stuff. Keeping you both in my prayers. These are the things that can really take you down. Im glad you have your gorgeous lake home to run too for comfort and beauty. Much love and hugs..... Your surrogate grandmother.... ❤❤❤❤
I thought the original kitchen looked pretty good. Holy wow what an amazing new look! that is the kewlest oven I have seen. I like that it has a small, 2 person oven and an entertainment size oven. And the countertops and sinks look great and seemingly will last a lifetime...
I love to see Tyler and Todd's enthusiasm for their projects
Happy Sunday Guys. Hope you get resolution for your trials ❤

Since the Land is costing you a fortune with all of the trouble.......and now you have purchased a lake home....I was wondering what you will eventually do when the Land is finished?? Will it be a weekend place or?...and oh...that dock is so fabulous!! Anyway I am hoping it all works out shortly and love your channel...
The Dome and Containers are on the same property :). We aren’t 100% sure what we’ll do, likely the the lake would be a weekend/summer spot maybe?
@@tylerandtodd With the amazing design of the shipping container home and all you've been through I suggest you get it done and sell it, probably for a fortune. Move the Dome to the Lake for guests. I love the decision for white appliances. Beautiful.
I would definitely do a light gray subway tile for the backsplash because it's timeless...or white if it makes you happy!
We did white 'honeycomb' tiles, for our backsplash with a gray mortar. It looks great, 'sacred geometry' , those bees know : ) Love the white appliances , we have white too. : ) The kitchen looks so much brighter , love it
Looks gorgeous, and the white brightens the whole kitchen, i can see Tood going to make some hand done tiles where you design, colour and bake in a kiln... perhaps in a plant style with greens .. 😅😊
You probably know this, but it is very important that the dishwasher drain hose go UP to near the bottom of the countertop before going down to the disposal or attachment point on the drain, so that when the dishwasher pumps the water out, it will not allow water to back flow into the dishwasher drain line. It should say this somewhere in the installation instructions. If you don't do this, it can leave some smelly waste water in the drain hose.
Make a back splash out of glass (tiles or larger sheets). The glass can match the glass at your icemaker at the fridge. - clear glass painted white on the back side.
Wow beautiful white appliances! Great quartz counter tops….awesome renovation!!
I recently updated nearly 40 year old appliances and it was not cheap, but needed, and to my surprise the dishwasher install actually needed a pluer and an electrician to be fully connected and working. A bit of this was due to how old the setup was originally, but dang it took 2 people nearly a full workday to get that one dishwasher setup and connected the right way. This included a special waterlock for dishwasher, a sensor system along with a water leak grid sensor net which all had to work together.
The old system I was used to only needed power, water and drains, the new solution though cuts the whole thing off it it detects any water. I managed to drop an ice cube on the floor that vanished and clearly it must have slipped under the dishwasher, but that was enough to cut the power and shut the while thing down. I had to call the installer to get them to tell me how to restart it all after it had dried.
It made me feel really old because I had no clue about all this new stuff that now clearly was needed. I sort of was thinking it would be like the washing machine, but clearly dishwashers has caused enough issues and rot for new solutions to be required to limit the possible dangers. But dang it was a lot of work that was far beyond anything I had any clue about at all.
Love the new kitchen the new appliances are the perfect choice it brightens up the room, well done
So glad you kept the cabinets guys. They look so good.
Thanks so much! 😊

I admire you!
Your kitchen is amazing. It looks bigger, welcoming, and friendly. Even happy. When you open that oven door, it smiles.
I’ve been watching this vlog for quite a while now, I started when you were in the OLD RV. I can’t imagine a Sunday without seeing Tyler and Todd.

Your kitchen revamp is purrfect! Love all your design decisions, they're practical and have spruced up the old lady so much. Have a super awesome week.
Greetings from an icy winter hamlet in South Africa
Love the new appliances, sink and counter tops, beautiful ❤
Thanx for being here boys :)
I've watched your videos here n there over the last couple years. I live vicariously through others' cabin constructions/ renos and, as a fellow queer Canadian, it makes me happy to know that others like me are similarly inspired to build a life in the woods and live there all year round :)
I love how you guys preserved the real wood cabinetry - I don't get how people rip out real wood or paint over the warmth it offers a home, especially in rural cabins. So well done!
As for your backsplash, since you asked, I'd opt for colour. All that white (i.e. nearby walls and appliances) as well as grey (i.e. counter tops/ sinks) could use some accent colour(s) while stiill keeping the kitchen bright (e.g. chartreuse and/or other light greens, perhaps with white also mixed in). The resurgence of subway tile 10 years ago or so, while classic, is already dated/has been overdone, and, in my opinion, is well-suited to urban condos, not lake-side cabins, not to mention adding little in the way of life or personality. Not that you should alternatively be loud, necessarily. I guess I'm just biased and believe that kitchens should be cheerful, even if only subtly :)
We just finished our kitchen renovation . It's so beautiful ! I love it. We also went with quartz countertops and sink. It's mocha color, the sink, not counter. The faucet is oil rubbed bronze and I went from there. My husband and I watched The Perfect Storm again two days ago. Wow, we are just so together! Now, to keep up with you, we just need to get a lake house, get some containers, and redo the rest of the house---ha ha. Still love you guys ! Have fun.
Do one piece of quartz for the backsplash. Super durable, but so chic. Like your counter tops just continue up the backsplash - the few I’ve seen have looked stunning. Could even do a bit lighter coloured quartz but same texture maybe? I’m sure whatever you choose will look beautiful!
Good jump! You are like me getting into cold water. Totally resistant, as it’s a mind game, to take that plunge! Yet so rewarding in the end.
I love the kitchen upgrades!! As always I enjoyed seeing all the fur babies included in the video!! Todd, I agree that a sailboat would be awesome!! They are so beautiful to see on the water!! Have a great week and I'll see you next Sunday!! Much love to you!!❤🌈❤️
The new countertops/ sinks & new appliances look really great! You could build a floating tiny house like Crystal & Jasmine did. Build a ramp for Charlie & Eddie to walk down, to get into the lake. I like both ideas for a backsplash but as stunning and beautiful as the cottage is, maybe do a sample of each, so we can vote based on the appearance of each. Good luck in getting the legal shit sorted out - glad you have Dumpy as your GC.
So, I think the white backsplash area is key for cohesiveness with the appliances. Whichever one of your ideas keeps that connection the most is the one i would go with. Your pup at the beginning, looking up at Tyler talking.......such love....so adorable! You guys are great!
