That is just wonderful. I can so totally relate to it. I too have made engine room recordings, on board my beautiful, Abeking & Rasmussen 1968 built, 68 foot steel ketch, with her also beautifully polished, painted & lubricated, Gardner 6LXB .... Oh my god, what an incredible lullaby she has been humming to us for 45 years.... 45 -100% - trouble-free years I must had. And her marine gear ... also a with thing of beauty and reliability. From idle, that would put any baby to sleep, all the way up to the incredible sound of wide open throttle at 1300rpm! Thanks so much for posting your video, these things are absolutely priceless. The love affairs we have with our marine creatures is rather odd is it not? I'm so glad to be one of the odd fellows!
Looks like there were two.. One at the beginning to the left of the wood burner and it looks like a different one at 9.00 taking a stroll across the top of the hold. Cool!!
Wow! Lovely boat! Stove, cat and an engine like a sewing machine! I'm in love with her! To think she originally had a motor in the same power as a Honda 250! Dankjewel!
What a boat! Lived in and loved. Anything else is cosmetics and cosmetics in a craft of this age and kind would spoil her. Thanks for showing her. Loved the execution of that turn, by the way. No fuss; no thrash; no screaming bow thruster!
The sound of that engine is so sweet! Awesome. Listening to that chug along is music to the ears! I think I would have trouble staying awake. It lulls you to relax so much. Hope she runs forever.
I have a great appreciation for older things and older times. More so every day but especially for boats. That appreciation goes to the others like me also that thrive off of maintaining and keeping these old machines alive for the next rare person to take over it's care. People like these are really the types that are truly way more important to the world than many get credit. Anyone with the will power to keep an old boat alive is a dam good person in my book.
Fantastic that Jan (rest in Peace) and Bea saved the boat and now with Paul's help. They know the wonderful heritage behind it a how important it is to preserve. Amazing.
Welnu maar eens een berichtje, ik vind dit een leuke serie! Heb interesse in deze oude 'altijd' werkende motoren, ook waardeer ik de 'rustige' wijze van filmen en bevraging!! Ga zo door zeg ik;-))
Brought back fond memories of my youth on the canals of the Netherlands. Especially the small steel hulled barge I skippered for a summer in De Kaag. Slow and methodical was the name of the game as she would do as you asked, but only were patient. Thanks for sharing!
Not exactly like putting the key in the ignition switch and give it a twist, is it. That engine was installed the year I was born. Kitty seems right at home on the water. I enjoyed this. I thank you for it.
Politici gee natuurlik 'n ander spin daaraan.
We used to light a "squib" with a match and screw it into the cylinder head. Sometimes our manual flywheel swung 2-stroke Widdop diesel engine ran backwards, so then we had to re-start.
I've worked on a small railway inspection cart from the 1920's that uses its 630cc 2 cycle to reverse direction instead of using a gearbox, quite clever.
@@logantc.1353 Big marine diesel engines also. The engine is stopped, the camshaft re-positioned and the engine re-started. The ship then moves astern.

German guy here: Thank you for doing this rare subject - it is always a pleasure!! I love to watch your videos - it is kind of relaxing to hear this engines run. Btw: The subtitles are kind of irritating to me and I would like to be able to turn them off.
Great sounding engine. I have a sabb diesel that uses the zundfix. I'm out of those so have to resort in a bit of oil into intake when really cold. Where can you buy the starting cigarettes?
Great video, thanks. I have the same engine but not in a boat but I thought these were a lot older than the 1950s. I thought mine was late 1920s. Anyway mine is for sale as I don't have a suitable boat for the engine and it needs to be used.
Voor zover ik weet heeft de Voorwaarts ook een petroleum motor. Maritiem Museum Die is weer terug naar Naarden Bussum In Delft schijnt er ook nog 1 te varen
If its one thing I learned leave a man while hes in his routine, never interrupt him very impolite and gets his upset. Important to make sure all the valves switches, cranks have been cycled and set. Then the Beast wakes up and the sound of harmony comes to his ears.
Hi When I worked on the tugs we had a 6 cyl 2 stroke Bolnes 400 hp Engine and in the cold weather used the fuses but we used to light them so they would smolder and warm the air, But here you did not, so how can the fuse warm the air if you don't light them ???.
I can fully understand the attraction of these engines, and would love to be involved with something like that myself as my father was an engine room artificer in the South African Navy when they had some real clunkers. But I wonder how long before somebody pops a Tesla motor in here since they seem to be putting it in everywhere else :-)
These people know what they are doing with an older type engine. Perhaps some expert environmentalist with five minutes experience can telll them where they are going wrong !
"sailing" - a confusing word. Means powered by sails, or traveling over water. The used meaning was figured out pretty quickly, but English does need to do better.

I like the cat on this boat !
It's nice that someone still cares about these old engines!! Good job!!

I suppose every engine that is started with compressed air has an air compressor attached for replenishing the bottles.

it says "engine room". but they called it a motor. is this a motor or an engine?
Kirby - Engines are driven by some kind of fuel compressed by internal combustion making BHP. Motors use electricity making BHP.
@@rogertycholiz2218 General Motors dont use electricity to make BHP.
@@kirbylee57 They do import the squeal from the scrapple factories to put in their brakes.
This is a language difference. Many English-speakers say "engine" for a heat engine. Evidently Netherlanders say "motor" if it brings about motion.
