    T Edition is absolutely incredible. I played it at the start of last year and the additional content, slight character additions, balance changes, and difficulty made my favorite game shine in a brand new, and often even better, light. More attention on this brilliant hack is lovely to see!

      I was super sucked in for the first 2/3 but the end starts to be rough around the edges. I know I opted to use rewind on a lot of later fights instead of just blowing time powerleveling instead.
      I personally liked the tweaked base character sprites the most. The adaptation to the original art was incredibly well done and honestly those sprites are better than the pixel remaster ones.

    Two romhacks I really enjoyed are the Golden Sun Reloaded ones. They take Golden Sun 1 and The Lost Age and do a lot to rebalance them, they have higher difficulty than the base game and make replaying the games feel like a fresh experience.
    It's basically an improved vanilla experience for people looking to replay the games but not wanting to do exactly the same as every other playthrough before.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's sick, I might have to look in to those. The only Golden Sun one I saw in my travels was a Jenna replacement mod, where Isaac's swapped out for her in the first game. I feel like we get enough of her in the second game.

    • @erwark
      @erwark ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another vote for this. There are lots of balance changes behind the scenes. Magic damage and resistance aren't so heavily reliant on stacking Djinn now. This, plus equipment and class tweaks make multi-element class comps more viable mid-game. Definitely forced using defensive buffs etc for bosses without being brutal.

    • @danagray9709

      Yeah, I'm not huge into new games. I find the occasional hit, but for the most part, they feel soulless. Old stuff hits me in a way that new stuff can't. even Dragon Quest 11 was a fantastic game, but if I wanted a comfy DQ game to screw around in, I'd go 1-8, maybe 9 if I was feeling adventurous.

Suckling corporate teet doesn't hurt anyone as far as I can see, so I am legitimately thankful for the opportunity to sell out.
      Also yeah, you should absolutely try that Breath of Fire one. You're not getting a unique experience, but you are getting a playable translation, which is very nice. If you're used to the original names, you might need the notes, which detail what items do!

    I've liked the last two rom hacks i've played.
    The first is Pokemon Emerald Rogue, it's a rogue-like gameplay in Gen3 pokemon game, you can expect the usual stuff, perma-death, limited items, HARD enemies and so on. You definitelly need some strategies to beat the game.
    The second game is Digimon World 2 Alternative. Reballanced gameplay makes the game fairly harder, but not crazy harder. More digimons added to the game, they are just recolors, but still existing digimons, like BlackAgumon or BlackGabumon for example, and hey, more is always good. Dungeon layout is completely new, textures of the dungeons are made new from scratch (ice dungeon looks icy!). Story dialogs are rewritten to make more sense, but the overall story is the same. There's more, but i don't really want to make this post too long, but i recommend this hack.

    • @Caspicum

      I have heard about Digimon World 2 Alternative! There was another one too that I was looking at, and I think they both do similar things in their own ways. Once I've had a DW2 refresher, I'll have to take a look for sure.

    ShadowOne's Zelda Redux patches are definitely worth checking out. There's also a huge category of Undub patches, with my favorite being Mega Man ZX Advent. Finally, you may be interested in my Chrono Trigger Soundtrack Expansion romhack, which ports 12 pieces of music from Pre-releases and Re-releases back into the SNES Chrono Trigger, and places them at appropriate points in the story.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  ปีที่แล้ว

      That Chrono Trigger one sounds sick. I don't know how to feel about undubs, it depends on the game, I guess. Certain games use the cheese to enhance them, like Legend of Dragoon or... uhhh... but if I wanted the Japanese audio, I'd probably just play in Japanese and try to pick up some words and stuff along the way. I guess they're good for people who don't care about that.

    • @PowerPandaMods
      @PowerPandaMods ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Caspicum I agree with the hesitancy around undubs. For the most part, I avoid them. However, for ZX Advent, it actually brings the game stylistically in-line with Zero 1-4 and ZX, which feature the same style of "undubbing" in their international releases. The stylistic similarity was enough to sell me on it.

    My most favorite rom hack still has to be Sonic 2 Pink Edition, mostly because it was the first i had played that really opened my eyes to the incredible possibilities that just small tweaks to the core game loop could have. In this case, instead of jumping on enemies, you had to time hammer spin attacks, or youd take damage, there was also melee attacks as well, which just blew my mind.
    Recently though, ive been delving into randomizers, like a link to the past randomizer, or the lttp/supermetroid randomizer. and its for the exact reasons said in here. It spices it up and puts a new coat of paint on it, without really damaging the core of the game itself. That said it *does* remove the meticulously told story from both so if youre not into that, then its best to avoid i would think.

      Like I just played thru Kirby's Dreamland on the new Switch Gameboy release, haven't played it since I was a kid so it's probably been a good 20+ years since I've played it. Even so, I beat the whole thing first try while hardly getting hit. I got hit maybe 3 or 4 times thru the entire game. It was just so easy. Got hit once in that boss rush at the end, and once during the Dedede fight as I was learning his pattern.
      The Boss rush was one of the most fun parts of the entire thing! And I actually liked how I noticed that the 1 HP of health never restored throughout it, so you don't get your health back between fights which I like.

    You have everything from difficulty hacks (Most obvious is Radical Red (Tho I'm personally not a fan)), reimaginings of existing games (Delta Emerald, "What if ORAS but Emerald?"; Der Erif/BACKWARDS, "What if Fire Red but you explore the region in reverse?"; and Red++, (Red but with a ton of updates) being great examples), and full-on new games with new stories/locations/Pokémon/etc. (Orange, Coral, Unbound, Vega, Prism, etc.).

I just got Trials of Mana/SD3 all patched with about 8 different improvement mods and bugfix/balance patches. After this I got FF4 and FF6 ready to go after this video and I am just so hype to finally play these games.
    part of the reason I don't necessarily want to go back and play a lot of these games is because of various annoyances about them that were just sort of accepted back in the day but are nigh unforgiveable today (like not having a run button!) and these mods fix just about all of that.

    I've had a really good time with the Breath of Fire 3 Hard-Rebalanced mod. While it does make the game harder like it says on the tin, it also does quite a lot of other things. There's no new story, quests or dialogue - it's just a lot of balance changes to gameplay mechanics, on top of much stronger enemies.
    The biggest change is magic (and thus Nina) is significantly stronger now, even in late-game. Even Garr's fire spells can hit pretty hard now. Spells and abilities got moved around quite a lot (for example, Nina is now also a competent healer), and there are many new additions. Debuff spells actually work on most bosses. Garr is much stronger overall. Rei is physically weaker but better at using moves like Flying Kick. Masters are rebalanced so there's a reason to use all of them, and they no longer reduce stats, so there's more freedom in building characters the way you want. Support spells like Protect are about 2.5x stronger. Damage + HP&AP totals are higher, which makes recovery spells more necessary and items less useful.
    Overall, I found myself paying quite a lot more attention to strategy in battles and making quite a lot of use of spells and abilities I normally wouldn't bother with, like Might, Speed, Enlighten, Meditate, Sanctuary, Flying Kick, Triple Blow and Rei's Lightning spells. The extra enemy difficulty also makes the elemental and status resist shots, as well as elemental/status resist equipment much more important.
    If you want to re-experience BoF3, I'd recommend giving it a go

    As someone who's played through Knight of Lodis a billion times and probably has a bias, I feel like a good romhack should do a little more tweaks,
    -make Emblem descriptions more accurate as to how to obtain them, tweak some other item/ability descriptions that are just kinda vague
    -more balances to spells and items because there's a lot of funkily balanced stuff besides the summons or stuff that's fun that doesn't really get used especially in the late game (better katanas for instance)
    -sneak in earlier encounters of interesting but hard-to-get enemies like undead so it's easier to play with those builds earlier than 50% of the way through the game
    -maybe add in a way to play multiplayer through different save files which could add some fun to local play and enables the Emblems to be earned easier than setting up a link mode
    -if adding content is on the table, tons of paths there, could always use more items, classes, abilities, new random encounters, side bosses, Quest Mode maps and different rewards, expanded gameplay that reaches the level 50 cap, all sorts
    I know this isn't a place to put detailed input on the romhack but I just got into stream-of-thought mode.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about spell balancing, but it'd be a good idea to read the change log. I felt like every with the space nerf, the summons didn't do as much actual damage either. There's still the same Katana, but they took a bunch of items that were locked behind certain later events, and the Quest Mode, and put them in the base game. I can't remember the first faeries' name, but she starts witht he candy set, so you can recruit her early and not miss out, and Alphonse starts as a Knight instead of a Soldier. The person behind it seems to know the game quite intimately, so I'd say some of your wants might even be in the change log.

      It's hard to improve on a lot of classic JRPGs narrative-wise. Sure, the translation can be dodgy, and they can be padded, but the fundamental plot points are usually pretty consistent. When I see someone write new dialogue, I can tell it doesn't fit, their personality bleeds through. It's why I'm also iffy about translations, the Breath of Fire 2 fix up has some weird choices for language that don't fit too well. Functionally, it's a better translation, but it's also a little off-colour.
      I'm not against them or anything, but if you're gonna do it, make it wholly new, so there're no clashes.

      That sounds familiar to me, there's not too many FFT mods that do multiple things, I find often times they stick to doing one thing really well. Very narrow-focused mod creators, but that usually works well.
      I'm much the same, I'm a bit particular with how I enjoy mods. There was some Mario RPG one I had a crack at, supposed to be really good, but I hated the font colour and how bloated the stats were. Lots of sprites had the wrong palettes and I put it down pretty fast. I guess that's the beauty of rom hacks, there's so many, you can get exactly what you want.

    Is there a Hard Mode for Suikoden 2? I mean, 2 doesn't need it as badly, since they DID at least make the bosses somewhat formidable. (For example, most bosses attack more than once in a single turn. Hey! That's fair! It's a six on one battle!) That being said, it's still kiiiinda easy.
    Suikoden 1 is okay, but one thing I REALLY like about 2 is the variety of characters. Aside from the two Kobalds, Suikoden 1 only had humans. ...Yes, Fu Su Lu is human. He's wearing a mask. 2 had flying squirrels, octopuses, a robot, a griffon, 2 kobalds, a unicorn, and maybe a few others I forgot to mention.

      I wasn't captured by the Suikoden 2 difficulty mod. I don't know if I got filtered or what, but it seemed to be punishing for the sake of it, which I can dig, depending on the game, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
      Also, I never noticed that about Suikoden 1. Damn, that's crazy.
