Got one of these with i5 3570 & RX550 OC low profile for €120. For another 50, I added 8gb ram (16gb total) and a 480gb Kingston SSD (it has mounts behind the HD). Just finished RDR2 with 47fps average. Started Witcher 3 yesterday, runs perfect at 1080. Temps are excellent without any mods. Great little bargain gaming system.
I'm glad you found it helpful. Linux is an excellent option for older systems like these, I am running one on Debian with XFCE and it's really nice to use.
7:05 Don't forget to plug in the CPU cooler again so it has power.😺 Also it's probably a bad idea to blow any dust around the case with the CPU removed as dust will contaminate the CPU socket.
This is a really great video on getting to the harder to clean spots! I have a couple of these that don't work that I use to teach a class how to build a PC. They are super simple, only require a single screwdriver to disassemble or assemble. And they don't take much space for easy storage.
Planning on getting a Xeon quad core 8 thread 2.8Ghz/core CPU for my Optiplex 7010 SFF and am going to max out the RAM, flash the BIOS to add Xeon support and increase the memory support as the stock BIOS only officially supports Celerons, i3, i5 and i7 chips and a maximum of 16GB of 1,333Mhz DDR3 memory and I plan on upgrading to faster 32GB 1,600Mhz DDR3 memory in 4×8GB sticks. The next upgrade will be a low profile GeForce GT 1030 4GB GDDR5 graphics card. I also heard there are low profile GTX 550 2GB GDDR5 cards out there so I might look into getting one of those if the 1030's turns out to be too pricey. The storage upgrade is going to be a $30 1TB SanDisk Ultra 3D 2.5" SSD with a drive caddy adapter I got from Ebay for $4. The graphics card is going to be the hardest upgrade to source for me as the GT 1030's have recently gone up in price and my total budget for this build is $130 which includes the CPU, SSD, 32GB of RAM, and no more than about $40 for the graphics card.
Any intel pcie WiFi card would work fine as long as it's on a desktop low profile PCIe card since this computer doesn't have any dedicated mini pcie slot for wifi.
Make sure you get a high quality one, and for that use case it would be better to get Display Port to HDMI because then it doesn't involve analogue to digital conversion which can cause image degredation.
Something must be wrong with my Optiplex 7010. It has 10 USB ports: 4 on the front and 6 on the back. But only one of them is USB 3.0. 9 are USB 2.0. I could use another 3.0 port, but I don't know if there's anything I can do about it. Maybe something is hooked up wrong?
If you use a kit of 4 identical 8gb DIMMs there should be no issues. If different sticks of ram are used it also probably will work, but it may not run at transfer speeds as high as you'd expect because of mismatched timings and other things. My server 7010 is currently running 16gb with 4x4gb non identical DIMMs just fine at 1600mhz.
Check what the flashing code means using the manual which you can find on Dell's website, that will tell you what it is. I think the most frequent point of failure for these machines is the power supply.

If memory serves optiplexes running 2nd gen intel processors don't support 3rd gen, but you can upgrade it to something like a i7-2600. The PSU will be fine because all trims of the same optiplex use the same PSU e.g, the i3 and i7 optiplexes use the same PSU
I'm not aware of any official power supplies that would be an upgrade but I presume you can purchase 3rd party power supplies that can fit in the same form factor. However I'm not sure of if they would be safe or reliable.
Unfortunately it's quite limited for storage upgrades, there is only one 3.5" bay for storage. I believe you can get mounts that let you replace the optical disc drive for a 2.5" drive mount, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend these systems as a multi-drive nas.
i5-3470 is a little too old and not as quick and because of this the lifespan is far shorter the modern CPU of 6,7,8 gen.. I would like to get rid of mine or give it away. I have a ThinkCentre tiny i5-3470T still works very well indeed and occupies a small space on my desktop. The current cost-effective USED SFF PC is based on i5 or i7 of 6th or even 7 th gen Intel CPU, you may be lucky, I found and bought mine based on i7-7700 from HP desktop SFF, Elitedesk 800.
There are still weaker processors being sold brand new today. A new gen Intel Pentium is as weak as a first gen i7 processor which is 14 years old. This 3rd gen i5 will still do fine for a regular home use computer

Hence I kept it in the socket. That also keeps the CPU safe from drops. And yes, the fan should be plugged back in again! 😅
you'll find using an old paintbrush versus a toothbrush will be safer for the parts and more efficient at knocking dirt/dust off
Depends really, I find paintbrushes are unable to brush off the more "stuck down" dust

Hi I have same CPU. I want to upgrade the RAM up to 16gb so can you suggest me which should I buy?
If you are located in the UK I suggest Cex kits of ddr3, such as a 1600MT/s 2x8GB kit. This should be fine for you.
Ive put 4 4gb kits of ram in one of these. But only shows 8gb of ram installed . Is mobo only limited to 8gb
You can also upgrade to hdd to a ssd
Yes but you'll need a 2.5" to 3.5" mount for it to not rattle about in the case because it doesn't have any 2.5" bays
On mine, there is a 2.5 ssd mount point on the back of the HD mount.
