I remeber one year ago having that Dell optiplex with a gigabyte radeon rx 580 8gb and it really surpirse me how well it ran the mayority of games. Good old times.
I did. And asked a particular question in the comments below if you don’t mind answering ? My only question was did you use a standard atx psu ? Everyone’s telling me I have to use tfx power supply and they suck. I have already ordered the proper adapter (24 - 8)
you guys are gold. ive always used console and bought one of these for sim racing (acc, rf2, iracing) and hoping with these upgrades push those titles. im a pc noob so no idea. great video man
Good video. Some of those Dell's that have an i3's like a i3 4170 have a smaller/weaker fan on the heat sink. I notice the temps were very high when I swapped out the i3 4170 to a i7 4790 on a Dell Vostro tower (fancy looking Optiplex) and I did some researching. Dell chose to save a dollar on the i3 fan/heat sink models. I just changed the fan to a better fan on the heat sink and then the temps were acceptable.
I just recently rebuilt a 9020 dumpster PC. I put in a 4790K and 32GB of RAM to start. For the Power Supply and Video Card, Dell actually made an RX-580 (though it's a standard non-overclocked card) and a 365W "upgraded" PSU with a 6-pin PCIe plug. It does work, but it comes really close to the limits of the power supply. I will put in a better supply and card later on, but it's enough to start for me. The sad part is to some extent, my 9020 SFF tends to work slightly better, despite it getting pretty warm.
For this machine you do need more than 16 GB ram max, 32 is just not needed and a waste of money in most cases (unless you need it for things other than gaming). You could live with 16 GB easily in 99% of cases, with absolutely no difference in switching to 32 GBs, you can also add in a 600 Watt with additional room just for comfort with 80 plus silver rating, and if possible add 2 cheap 120 fans intake and out, for GPU it is good, however you could also have a slightly stronger GPU such as 4050, or the very-strong-for-your-machine RX 6700, which might be an overkill upgrade which might be bottlenecked by the CPU, if don't already have an SSD it will make a huge difference (not in gaming mostly, but rather in getting a fast machine, it's night and day).
Top tip for these you can actually drop in a Xeon E3 like a 1240 (not sure about some of the higher wattage ones) v3 and it'll run in a 4th gen Intel optiplex :)) you get that hyperthreading, big cache, and if you do a 1290v3 higher base clock for like 20 bucks! The 1240v3 has a low enough TDP where you can toss in an RX6400 even in an SFF case!
Just got an optiplex and was wondering why the USB 3.0 wasn’t working after installing a GPU. THIS WHOLE TIME I THOUGHT THAT WAS FOR THE DISK DRIVE 😭 Thank you so much for a solution!!
im so late to this and idk if this'll be read, but how'd you connect the power to the GPU? I never researched that much and am just surviving off of the MSI Aero (2gig 😔) card from another OptiPlex video, so if you ever do get to this is there a more in-depth analysis of anything not covered/missed in this, including the GPU power? Edit: Despite this your channel is literally amazing, and its the backbone to any PC stuff I'll actually be able to afford so I thank you for that ❤
Alright! Nice build. A couple things. A Corsair CX750M PS will fit with no case mods. I run two Dell 9020s one the SFF (a2000GPU) and one the MT (RTX 2060 GPU). One runs a 4790 at 3.6ghz. The other (the MT) runs a 4790K at base clock of 4.0. The non-K tends to stay boosted to about 3.8 ghx. (very nice.) The K variety stays around 4.3 / 4.4 ghz. And that's awesome. It DOES feel just a little snappier. Makes a real difference in the 1% of brand new games that still run on 4 cores 8 threads but need all they can get from the CPU to feed the GPU. A request if you're interested. THESE Dells are great! But Microsoft seems think they are not worthy of Windows 11. (BOO!) Would you mind installing Windows 11. Seeing if there's an idiotic watermark, compatibility problems long-term. That sort of thing. So we can keep these very capable systems alive and kicking. Because they kick! :)
I bought an optiplex on ebay, for around 119 USD. in 2016 it is 16GB RAM with a GTX745 and 1TB SSD and its Windows 10. Pretty insane for that price. I dont use it anymore but its a good deal
To be clear about power supply dimensions for other viewers, they should be 140mm X 150mm X 86mm. if a PSU is described as being "ATX12V/EPS12V" that is usually an indication that it will be 160mm long or longer. Standard ATX is usually only 140mm, but check twice. Graphics card length accounting for the hard drive cage. will max out at approximately 260mm for the snuggest fit, but a gpu about 242mm long should be the limit. (for a visual, the RTX 3060ti Fan Edition and RTX 2070 Fan Edition are both 242mm long and fit nicely. Of course, this isn't a problem if you have removed the cage.
Thank you so much for your video! I put an RTX 3050 in my optiplex 7020 and it’s working so great! I’m still trying to figure out the power supply so I’m not running it too much the links are so helpful just trying to figure out the pci adapter because my power supply has a 6 pin and the dell has 4 pin
Ran into the same fitting issue with the PSU on a 7010 MT and an FSP Aurum 750CM. You can jimmy it in from the bottom very carefully by removing the motherboard completely first. The issue is actually the extra length needed for the modular components. A non modular PSU will drop in without issue. GPU's with a length of 6.9 inches or below should fit in no problem, so an ITX model would be a good choice. I also believe mine and the 9020 motherboards can support upto 32GB RAM. with 8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM sticks going for less than 10 USD each, is it worth going full 32 GB?
Just an FYI for your viewers, the Be Quiet! System Power 10 series of PSUs, from 450w-750W, have the exact same measurements as the original Dell 290W PSU. They fit like a glove. Only drawback is that they are completely non-modular, so you have to do some cable management, but you retain full function of your latching mechanism. 👍😏
I just pulled out three Optiplex from the dumpster at work. I took the best one an optiplex 3080 with an i5 10500. I removed the motherboard and all the components and mounted it to a half inch piece of plywood and put in a used 6600 xt. i then used a SATA to 8 Pin adapter to power the graphics card. Highly recommend against doing this but in this application it just barely worked. I'm stoked that the computer came with a solid state drive already installed. 6 core + $20 ram upgrade + 6600xt is badass for a free pc even in 2024
I upgraded my son's GPU a year or so ago, I've had his old rx580, two 8gb sticks and a good psu just collecting dust. Gonna order an Optiplex and put that stuff in it. I have ROG Zephyrus laptop but I wouldnt mind having a desktop as well
I am building a 9010 and used the i7-3770 and modded my latch system by notching the plastic catch in the middle. I cut out the bottom left corner with a saw blade and my Antec 650 watt PSU fit right in with just a lil tweaking.
Thanks for this excellent video. I am looking at a Dell Optiplex 7070 Tower Desktop that I hope to do the same upgrades as far as the PSU and GPU. It appears to be a full size or micro ATX case that would support a standard ATX PSU.
Hey man. I love your video and it helped me out so much. I just got a 7020 with the i7 and 32 gigs of ram for around 150$… mine is the mini tower. You also have the mini tower version, correct? I replaced the existing gpu (2gig I forget the brand) with a rx 580 (8g) but am having issues running some games, because of the psu im guessing. Everyone on Reddit says I can’t use an atx power supply because of intels proprietary connectors, but I’ve learned you can use a 24 to 8 pin adapter to connect. They also said I have to use a tfx power supply but obviously they only go so high power wise, and it’s very limited selection. I’m looking to install at least 500w maybe 700w. Is the psu you installed a standard atx? Thank you for your video and help!
I will also add that like you, I had issues with the ram slot tabs blocking the gpu. So I actually had to cut the plastic shell off in a wedge shape so that the gpu would fit 💪
Appreciate the effort man I have a sff HP with a LP GTX 1050Ti and i5 2400 My uncle gave me the PC because he bought few of those for spare parts, I added RAM and SSD then bought the GPU. Voila it works for now but I intend to upgrade to a similar system like the one you built
Im reading some jank about the 24 to 8 pin supply NOT CONVERTING THE CORRECT PSU VOLTAGES ofc Dell has proprietary voltage pin layouts AND values. The standby power is 12v vs 5v for standard? You would be best to confirm for yourself as I am not an expert just stumbled on some threads.
I could... but the problem is there isn't as much can be done with those newer optiplex models. Dell started to lock them down after the generation seen in this video. They made them more proprietary with less physical space internally. The best most people can do is slap in a PCI-E slot powered card only and call it a day.
*is it really works. if you are use this 550w psu in this motherboard any damaged issues have seen? another q is , how much is this motherboard wattage limit?*
That's a pretty solid deal! I would recommend for sure upgrading the GPU when you can, that model in particular NVIDA does not release driver support for any longer.
I have a Dell i7-4770. I have 32gb ram, two rtx3060 12gb graphics cards in it with a 800pwr supply. What is the largest and best cpu chip I can put in it that you recommend please!?
I’m about to put an amd radeon graphics card in an Optiplex 990 that has integrated graphics. I’m concerned about making the switch. I know the intel graphics are supposed to disable automatically in favor of the new one, but I’ve heard conflicting stories that they won’t many times & people get stuck not knowing what to do.
By installing the GPU you should easily be able to just plug into the graphics card ports without having to make any kind of "switch". It should just natively work.
Sorry dumb question but im new to PC gaming I have an optiplex 7020 that I started with, all I've done to it so far is slap a PSU, more ram, SSD and a GPU. I was interested in upgrading CPU but I was wondering will that same cpu u used in the video work for me? 😅
I picked up an Optiplex 5050 MT a couple weeks ago and made the mistake of not checking if I could even upgrade the power supply without getting an overpriced proprietary one 😅
I use the exact same GPU, PowerColor RX 6600 XT Hellhound and I don''t need the USB 3.0 cable extension. You plug that cable to the motherboard header last, after installing GPU.
I was wondering about that. I bought a 90 degree adapter for my T1700, because I converted it to AM5. I’m guessing that he just wanted extra clearance.
Thank you. Great video! I have an Optiplex 7010 MT and want to upgrade my graphics card and thereby need an upgrade of my PSU. Bought the AMD RX 6600 XT (Hellhound) graphics card and an TT Smart BM3 650W psu, but I get problems already when upgrading the psu. Anytime I install it and connected all power cables, my dell power Button only blinks 2x2 orange (Faulty psu or faulty psu cable connections). Tried both: with and without new graphics card. When I reinstall the original psu back into the system, everything works fine - system starts up (without new graphics card). Do you have any hints for me what I should think of or what I might do wrong?
I understand the logic behind modifying the USB plug by cutting the adapter. However, it seems the far more practical route would be to modify the original plug. You'd just need to remove the clip and cut down the two raised portions on either side of the clip. Then, I would plug it up and cover the connection with heat shrink tape. But I do understand that you can alway buy another adapter if you screw it up, and the factory cable would be more difficult. But, modifying the factory plug would look far less "janky."
@@PCTechHustle Thank you for the great info. I bought one for my office that I pick up tomorrow, then a whole bunch of part come in on Saturday. I am running an RX 6600 in my main rig and love it, so I know it'll work great in this machine, as well.

I bought an Optiplex 9020 for $490 on Amazon with an i5-6500, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD + 3TB HDD, and an RTX 2060 SUPER 8G... ...and it came with a stock 290W PSU. It works fine as far as I can tell, but I assume this will throttle it quite a bit and potentially cause more problems down the line. I plan to upgrade it with a 500+ watt PSU, and probably also an i7-4790 like this, and a larger SSD eventually. But if it seems to run fine as it is, and I don't really have the budget to spring for the upgrades right away, how important is it to put in a new power supply? Is it something that can wait a month or two, or is it dangerous to even run a 2060S on 290watts? (its TDP is 175W, and "recommended power" above 450W)
Why would you try to put a 4th Gen Intel CPU in a 6th Gen system? Why not go with the i7-6700 which is a 65 watt chip with 4 cores and 8 threads? Besides the 4790 doesn't' recognize DDR4 RAM.
I got a dell optiplex 7010, i put an i73770 and 32 gigs ram and an rtx 2060 12gb and a 650w psu. At this point I would need a whole new pc to upgrade. So if I could figure out the Dell case wiring of the power button and the front panels I could just use jumper wires to connect them all to a newer motherboard like the msi boards.
Watched a ton of videos and trying to get a solid answer. Purchased a 7050 mt. Don't mind upgrading psu. What's the best bang video card to install? One that won't be bottlenecked by pci e bus speeds. I know rtx a2000 is best low profile option that doesn't require new psu but even used the 12gb version is hovering around $400-450 due to these youtube videos. Any 3060s that'll fit? They seem to be a little cheaper. Sorry for the questions I haven't modded a pc in 10 years. Getting old now! My $104 7050 came with i7 6700, 24gb ram, dual video cards(r7 450 and qvns 310 ) plus a tiny ssd I gotta swap out.
Might be a bit late but 1650 doesn't require a psu upgrade if you can get one that doesn't have a 6pin and with a psu upgrade a 1660super/ti, GTX 2060 or a amd rx580, Rx 5700 just look out for clearance issues with the bigger cards
A 390 is extremely old. While yea you can follow the idea of these upgrades you will have to get a different processor. I7 2600 is your best CPU for that model. I’d suggest trying to get a new Optiplex that supports at least 4th gen CPUs though. What you have is 2nd gen.

i love the 9020, one day this machine will be considered as a Classic.
I am on a 9020 using a 1650 with an i7 4790 via the stock psu and it's working fine 🙂 16gb 1600MHz ram and 220gb ssd with 2 hdd of 500gb
Lovely to see ur videos as always
Nice! Thanks for watching!
stock psu you say? what cables did you need to buy? i dont feel like upgrading my psu
Great. I'm using 1660
With the stock psi, I added a sata extender as we only get 4 and I needed more for extra fans and pcie pin
For using a new case,I added a 8pin extender and 4pin power extender
Are u using stock psi for 1660. I have a 1660Super but not sure if stock psu can handle 125watts from my 290W psu
I have an optiplex as my off-site backup unraid server, and those hard drives on the bottom over heat. I used magnets to attach an 80mm fan to the bottom of the case that pulls air from the hard drives over the pcie slots out the back.
I like the innovation!
I remeber one year ago having that Dell optiplex with a gigabyte radeon rx 580 8gb and it really surpirse me how well it ran the mayority of games. Good old times.
how did you fixed it?
Did you upgrade psu? The standard is 290w and it’s nowhere near enough to run on high games. At least it’s not in my 7020
@a1ankaymusic watch the video to find out!
I did. And asked a particular question in the comments below if you don’t mind answering ? My only question was did you use a standard atx psu ? Everyone’s telling me I have to use tfx power supply and they suck. I have already ordered the proper adapter (24 - 8)
@@a1ankaymusic it was an standard ATX PSU the only thing I had to buy was the adapter 24 to 8 pin to connect to the motherboard
you guys are gold. ive always used console and bought one of these for sim racing (acc, rf2, iracing) and hoping with these upgrades push those titles. im a pc noob so no idea. great video man
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Interesting I never knew there were different coolers!
How did You do thaaat??? :3
I upgraded my Ivy Bridge Dellasaurus with an EVGA power supply that was similar to the length of the Dell so I got to keep my latch. 😊
I have a Gigabyte P500B PSU, it’s 550W and 80+ Bronze and it’s the exact same dimensions as the stock PSU, no removing latch or anything needed
Nice! That’s the way to go!
I just loosened that latch so it would flex without removing it PSU went in and still have my latch.
Love the old 990 type, tower Optiplexes. Standard 24 pin PD and ATX form factor are a blessing. No conversion jank required.
Heck yeah!
True but you’re limited to 2nd and 3rd gen processors like the 2700 and 3770.
Going to be on the lookout for one that’s barebones.
Have you used the 1240v3 RX6400 combo? i have both in my cart right now.
Just got an optiplex and was wondering why the USB 3.0 wasn’t working after installing a GPU. THIS WHOLE TIME I THOUGHT THAT WAS FOR THE DISK DRIVE 😭 Thank you so much for a solution!!
Glad you found the video helpful!
im so late to this and idk if this'll be read, but how'd you connect the power to the GPU? I never researched that much and am just surviving off of the MSI Aero (2gig 😔) card from another OptiPlex video, so if you ever do get to this is there a more in-depth analysis of anything not covered/missed in this, including the GPU power?
Edit: Despite this your channel is literally amazing, and its the backbone to any PC stuff I'll actually be able to afford so I thank you for that ❤
Ah yes so satisfying, I'm just from watching another dell oem upgrade. And the hustle man strikes.
Great video!😁

Alright! :)
I’ve had W11 installed on my 3020 since March with no watermark. I did get the watermark on a cheap HP laptop.
The optiplex 7070 can be turned into one beast of a pc also with more modern specs
thanks bro i knew little to nothing ab building pcs but now this helped a lot
Absolutely! So happy to hear this helped!
Fantastic information! Thank you!
Glad you found the video helpful!
Great information!
Thanks for the info!
@@PCTechHustle No problem. We Dell Riders have to stick together. Merry Christmas.
6 core + $20 ram upgrade + 6600xt is badass for a free pc even in 2024
Hah! Nice!
do a video where you fully max out the Optiplex to where it does not bottleneck thanks love the vids
Haha! This is what I basically did in this one! Though I will be publishing a summary of this video and it’s benchmarks soon!
I upgraded my son's GPU a year or so ago, I've had his old rx580, two 8gb sticks and a good psu just collecting dust. Gonna order an Optiplex and put that stuff in it. I have ROG Zephyrus laptop but I wouldnt mind having a desktop as well
Nice!
Still rocking my i7 2600 dell optiplex with a 1060... almost time to upgrade tho😂

Do wucha gotta do!
@@PCTechHustle i mean yeah why not

Well thank you very much!!! ❤️❤️❤️
What would you recommend for a 9010?
You can do literally about the same things!
The hustle man strikes again!
Always be hustling! I can't wait to see this thing rip some games apart! Thanks for watching!
Is it able to play all current games on high settings and 1920x1080 pixles res at around 60 fps, if yes ut is just great.
Most of them yes. Just depends on which game.
Does that GPU not need a 6/8 power in? 🧡
Doll Optigaming 💯
Can you do a 3020 similar upgrade in 2024
A standard ATX power supply will work just fine. 500w too is more than enough for an RX 580.
Appreciate the effort man
I have a sff HP with a LP GTX 1050Ti and i5 2400
My uncle gave me the PC because he bought few of those for spare parts, I added RAM and SSD then bought the GPU. Voila it works for now but I intend to upgrade to a similar system like the one you built
This was some great information, I also ordered 2 things off your list. Thank you.
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
Im reading some jank about the 24 to 8 pin supply NOT CONVERTING THE CORRECT PSU VOLTAGES ofc Dell has proprietary voltage pin layouts AND values. The standby power is 12v vs 5v for standard? You would be best to confirm for yourself as I am not an expert just stumbled on some threads.
same question of mine !!!!
I’ve not had any historical issue. I would be interested to find actually what you found for sure.
No latching system removal needed, if cpu cooler was removed and entry path adjusted.
Does the removal of the latching system not affect the support of the GPU? Is it still held in position?
Great video BTW.
No it doesn’t. I think I failed to mention you can screw the GPU into the side of the chassis like any other PC case.
@@PCTechHustle ah perfect. No worries there then. Thanks for replying.
@@PCTechHustle ????? WHAT
Can you make a video how to upgrade a refurbished Dell optilex 7060 with an i7-8700 👀 would be interesting 👀👀
I could... but the problem is there isn't as much can be done with those newer optiplex models. Dell started to lock them down after the generation seen in this video. They made them more proprietary with less physical space internally. The best most people can do is slap in a PCI-E slot powered card only and call it a day.
if i already have a video card on this model, which type of wireless wifi/bluetooth card can i use? would any PCE-i work?
Yeah pretty much any pci-e card should work fine. I typically buy those $20ish dollar cards on Amazon
@@PCTechHustle thank you for the quick response!
That Segostep unit looks quite similar to some lower end Corsair. Likely the same OEM.
Yeah not sure I would trust it.
*is it really works. if you are use this 550w psu in this motherboard any damaged issues have seen? another q is , how much is this motherboard wattage limit?*
I bought optiplex 9020 with xeon 1231 v3 only for 80€ with gtx660 not bad deal, i have to make some minor upgrades like a more ram etc.
That's a pretty solid deal! I would recommend for sure upgrading the GPU when you can, that model in particular NVIDA does not release driver support for any longer.
@@PCTechHustle yea that is in to do list 😅 i build home server 👍
Try to make video about turn Optiplex 7000 tower to gaming pc
Did you need to update bios before upgrading cpu from i5?
Nope! 😃
don't they make an extension cable for for side mounting a gpu would have saved you some room
Yes but there would be no way to mount the GPU in the case if done that way.
i’m going from a i5 4590 to a i7 4790 do you think i will need to update my bios ?
Nah! Should just work!

Yes you can use the same CPU I used.
I picked up an Optiplex 5050 MT a couple weeks ago and made the mistake of not checking if I could even upgrade the power supply without getting an overpriced proprietary one 😅
Yeah those models are pretty limited
I use the exact same GPU, PowerColor RX 6600 XT Hellhound and I don''t need the USB 3.0 cable extension. You plug that cable to the motherboard header last, after installing GPU.
I was wondering about that. I bought a 90 degree adapter for my T1700, because I converted it to AM5. I’m guessing that he just wanted extra clearance.
Thanks
You’re welcome!
The 9010 mt with just a 1660super and 600w psu upgrade is a decent little power house for $200
For sure!
You have an awesome channel I'm glad I found it
Welcome aboard!
If the PSU works in another PC, it’s the adapter.
hey i wanna add i bluetooth card too my setup, can i plug my gpu into the black slot??
You can plug in the GPU into the normal slot and a network card like that in the slot under.
And yes, I am watching this because I just bought one of these machines! :)
Yeah my logic was modify the thing I could replace easily. You definitely can do what you mentioned as well! 😃
@@PCTechHustle Thank you for the great info. I bought one for my office that I pick up tomorrow, then a whole bunch of part come in on Saturday. I am running an RX 6600 in my main rig and love it, so I know it'll work great in this machine, as well.
Am I correct that Windows 11 will run on an Optiplex as long as I get an 8th or 9th gen cpu? thanks!

4th gen i7 still good?
Not bad would say! 😎
I have this 9020 with a i7 4790 and 16gb ram with a 500w psu. Will a rx 6500 xt work with this system? Will there be a huge bottleneck?

Any 3060s that'll fit? They seem to be a little cheaper. Sorry for the questions I haven't modded a pc in 10 years. Getting old now!
