    I am never going to forget how amazing the experience was watching this. I watched it in Athens, Tennessee and it was absolutely breath taking. I encourage everybody who hasn't and even those who have to please watch a total solar eclipse when you can

    My Wife and I live in Keizer which borders Salem, Or! We will be right in the middle of the 70 mile wide strip of the viewing area for this Eclipse! I've never seen a solar eclipse in my 60 years of life and for this one to line-up dead center of our location is more than I could ever of imagined! Whoooa!

    This is so weird. idk if it was intentional or something. I read a book called "tangerine". It was about how a boy and him family moved to tangerine, Florida. He was legally blind and he loved soccer. His name was Eric Fischer. He was blind because he looked at a eclipse directly (or so he was told. you find out later on that it wasn't true but...) I looked at your content and its all about eclipses. That TOTALLY freaked me out.

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Samantha Norris, I looked it up after reading this. Yeah, freaky. His name is spelled different, but still a weird coincidence.

      hey its sammy! I took a class that did reports on books. The topic for that project was fictional young adult books and it just so happened that for the beginning of the semester I chose that book. Even weirder, I presented on the day of the eclipse, and no lie, while presenting, the over head speaker came on and said the eclipse's totality was only a town or two over. I wasn't sure what to think of it.

      you actually don't have to because it will be in the afternoon after school is out. but even IF you were still in school while this was happening the teacher might be persuaded to let you watch it on the computer. or if you happen to be in science class with a cool teacher then they might give you some glasses and take you into the school yard to watch it as a class considering it is/could be used an educational event.

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the moon crosses the sky slightly slower than the sun does, the moon will be fairly close to the sun the whole day. This happens approximately once a month during the new moon, when the sun and moon are very close, but in an eclipse, the moon actually passes in front of the sun, rather than just going past it. Because of different perspectives, the actual eclipse will occur at slightly different times in different parts of the world. I hope this answers your question a little at least :)

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not really that you can see it better, but the longest duration for the total eclipse will be near Hopkinsville. A different location (can't remember where) is know for having the most totality, meaning the moon will be exactly between the earth and sun. I guess it mainly matters if you have to travel to see it anyway; you'll pick the best location.

    Why do we need "Solar eclipse glasses"? What will happen if you don't?

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You need something to protect your eyes or you will not be able to enjoy the eclipse (unless you're watching it on t.v. or a computer). The sun can do long-term damage to your eyes after only a few seconds of looking at it. It should be pretty easy to find glasses online or in shops. Just make sure they are good ones and not just cheap knock-offs. Regular sun glasses are not dark enough either, unless you wear at least three or four pairs, and even then, it's risky.

    • @foresmetwelve

      In Ireland, we will only see about 4% coverage of the sun and it will near sunset. If it's not cloudy, that is.

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In a total eclipse, it's supposed to get as dark as at midnight under a full moon. I've never seen one personally.

      Total solar eclipses happen about once every one to two years. It's very rare that one follows the path across the U.S. like this. This will give you a better idea: www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/list.html

    Which direction is the sun coming from? The video shows west to east?

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is looking south, so the sun is going east to west, as is the moon, but the sun is moving faster, relatively speaking.

    • @jcloud2928
      @jcloud2928 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for posting...the visual helps with the cross/over eclipse in action but I still can't figure out why Oregon sees this first...

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try to explain as best I can. When the moon is more westerly in the sky than the sun is, the shadow is cast near the west coast. As the sun overtakes the moon and then becomes more westerly than the moon is, the shadow moves across the US and toward the east coast. I hope this helps. It has to do with the relative positions of both sun and moon.

    • @jcloud2928
      @jcloud2928 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed that helps. Alot. Thank you for that Eric(=

    When this happens how long will it take for the moon to cover the sun and then move away from the sun and then it's over??? 🤔

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be about three hours from the time the moon first starts to covers the sun until it completely moves away. The moon will completely block the sun for about two and a half minutes and it will be almost like night time.

      Yes, as long as it has a high enough shade rating. You can check online, but I've seen it recommended that the rating be at least 12, preferably 13 or 14.

    Just curious why you can't see the moon until it blocks the sun? You can see the moon and sun out side by side very often. Why would you not be able to see the moon?

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      During a new moon, when the moon and sun are at their closest in the sky, the brightness of the sun makes it almost impossible to see the moon. Even a few days before and after, it is very hard to see unless you know exactly where to look.

    • @blackholeentry3489
      @blackholeentry3489 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The moon doesn't give off any light by itself...only reflected light from the sun. In a total solar eclipse, you are looking at the full back side of the moon which is the side that isn't illuminated.

    Why is the moon the same size as the sun?

    • @foresmetwelve
      @foresmetwelve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon, but it is also about 400 times farther away so they look the same size from our perspective.

    • @Izakokomarixyz
      @Izakokomarixyz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a hardcore atheist but I always thought that it was such a strange coincidence that the sun and moon appear to be almost the same exact size when viewed from earth, so much that the moon covers the sun just about perfectly in a solar eclipse.

    I live in NY and my family and a few friends are boating out to our island to watch it. it's usually private but anyone who wants to come, hmu for location. We're leaving in 30 minutes but if anyone who owns a boat feels like it, they can go on their own time. We're gonna be there all day, even past the eclipse for a bbq so it's gonna be fun.
