@@nattybumppo4151That is how shadows work, in fact. It’s just that most light sources on earth come from small sources that are smaller than the object that the shadow is from, so their shadows seem to get wider at a further distance rather than smaller. As for shadows from sunlight, they usually appear to stay the same size because of how far away the sun is. However, in the case of an eclipse, the relative distances between the earth, sun, and moon, and the fact that the sun is bigger than the moon, cause a cone-shaped shadow to be projected onto the earth, and the spot where the shadow touches the earth surface is far smaller than the moon - only a few miles across.
Man I wish more people got that excited about something. I got joy just hearing how happy he was. This was truly amazing. And my new favorite phrase of all time is "omg, PROMINENCE"
You provided one of the few comments in support of the gentleman filming the event. 99.8% of the comments just show how shallow a mind with computer/cell phone and a data plan can be. It's called PASSION....the gentleman was PASSIONATE about the rare event he was witnessing. A total solar eclipse is a MONUMENTAL phenomemon. Most of these idiots are clueless to the perfect mechanics, geometry and timing that must come together to produce such an event. And to view it - from a commercial jetliner - is a truly awe-inspiring experience to which the gentleman was reacting. The fact that he was reciting the correct terms ("prominence", "diamond ring", "Baily's Beads") throughout the recording showed this is something he had more than a passing acquaintance with. Then again, some people get that excited about Game of Thrones or some similar mindlessness.
While he may be well versed in eclipses, to me it just sounds like he is just trying to show off his knowledge to other passengers. These events should be admired and observed in silence in my opinion. Real physicists are humbled by these natural phenomenons. They understand just how irrelevant the human race is in the universe.
not really. i would put all my concentration into engraving that moment into my soul (and a camera probably) rather that blither like an idiot. i've seen three eclipses so far and one of them was a totality so perfect to be seen only once a century ( 2009). yet i definitely did not act like i was having an orgasm while being high on LSD.

This video is one of the best things out there in recent days. Cheers to everyone who is constantly in awe of the beauty of nature and of the opportunity we have to share this with each other.

After witnessing the August 2017 total solar eclipse from Missouri, I can totally understand & relate to what he's feeling. I thought the same thing. Would totally ruin my experience unless I had headphones. 2017 will have one across the whole USA and I intend to view in the middle of a field far from as many people as possible, for this very reason.
+Kane Alson A lot of people don't know that the plane was full of astronomers from the American Astronomical Society. Astronomer Mike Mentrianakis was the guy freaking out. He isn't just some obnoxious passenger shouting. He was saying what they all understood and appreciated. They were most likely making similar observations and remarks from their own windows. Mike lives for this. Totality! Totality!!!.....
Before you comment on the guy who's capturing the video... Think about how patient he's been his entire life waiting to see something like this. Most people don't! My gawd, prominence!
Kudos to this guy and his passion for this event. Him and others, part of the American Astronomical Society, got Alaska Airlines to change this flight schedule so that they could witness this event. You all are complaining about his excitement. . . but this is part of his life. You'd be just as excited for this, too! Thanks for the awesome video :)
I actually enjoyed the wholesome joy this man and many others expressed. We get enough negative bs, so I choose to savor the good instead of make fun of him. It really was an amazing thing to experience.
He has no consideration for others around him, hes being annoying and ignoring social etiquette because the moon is infront of the sun? Nope, he can be excited and not a dickhead at the same time and he is not doing that.
This is so epic, this gentleman also made it all more exciting. He's like a well-spoken commentator for a football match, just only for the space enthusiasts. This has put a smile on my face, and every year or so, I come back to this video.
This is the new "double rainbow" video!!! You can't be annoyed at the videographer's commentary. You gotta love it! The images and the whole flight. Good job Alaska airlines!

There are unfortunately no words to describe it, nor is there a good way to capture it with photography. Having once been under the shadow of the moon during the 11 Aug 1999 total solar eclipse in Europe, I can fully understand his excitement. There's something distinctly primordial about the sun suddenly disappearing. I had exactly the same reaction and burst into tears on my recording of that day. Now I'm looking forward to being in Oregon in Aug 2017
Having just seen a total solar eclipse in person, I can completely understand the sense of euphoria that this man feels. I got to see the eclipse from Dublin, Ohio and to see the diamond ring, corona, and solar prominences is truly indescribable. As I watched with my family, I was also doing play by play and cheering as if my favorite player had just hit a home run in the World Series.

That is actually extremely INCREDIBLE. The odds of someone getting a flight and literally front row seats to this, on the day it finally happens after many many years, is such a rarity and probably once in a lifetime thing and these people are getting to experience it. I’m just in aww of that, it’s so amazing to me!
Amazing! I'll be climbing a mountain today to watch the solar eclipse 8/21/2017 at about 63% coverage. It's not total, but it's going to be awesome! This guy is really passionate and I had no problem going on that "trip" of awesome with him. It's sad that other people have never felt this extreme feeling of JOY. Some may be completely void of emotions all together or they were brought up to stifle them. I would much rather be born with no limbs than be void of emotions. When those of us who are super-sensitive experience intense emotions it seems to leave a negative on so many because they just can't FEEL what we feel. I experience intense joy in many things people deem as not worth feeling so much for. And they wonder why they need so much money and junk to try and attain a temporary replacement for things that are elusive to them ... JOY being one of them. I'm not an astronomer and I'm not passionate about celestial events, but I have empathy and can live joy through him as if it happened to me. I'm addicted to the feeling in the center of my core. Once you find it, you'll never let it go. But the material world you need to let go of is too high a price for most.
The fact that we have our technology today to document these events is pretty outstanding. I can’t imagine how earlier civilizations reacted to this!! Just amazing!!
Yeah friend this man is killing everyone off by laughter and anger. Really this is gonna be a nice joke with this guy. If I saw this guy today, bet I would really kill myself on laughter!
Yeah, seeing this with your own eyes will really touch you like it did this guy. For a rare amount of humans it is the most amazing sight you will ever directly behold.
I'm not sure I'll be able to see this coming eclipse because of the clouds, but this video gave me so much joy. To hear everyone so blown away and in awe of something so simple, yet SO PERFECT. Everyone coming together to just look at a beautiful thing of nature. Thank you for this video. Even if I cannot see the eclipse when it happens, I'll think of this video, and think of the millions of other people across the world actually seeing it at that moment. SO BEAUTIFUL. Too know that millions and millions of people will all look to the sky for a few minutes, all together, to witness it.
Now that is a view you would rarely ever get from that altitude!!! Pilots were probably excited over this one! Beautiful! Edit: I witness the eclipse of 2024 in Dallas & I had the SAME reaction! 😂
For people who are complaining about him yelling excitement there's a volume option for a reason.... You've probably never had anything exciting in your life
That was only 3 minutes, imagine an 8 hour flight with this guy! "OMG, the flight took off! OMG it's beautiful! OMG the food is here! Wow! TOTALITY! OMG! their giving peanuts! OMG! It's been 15 minutes! OMG! wow! "
That really was super cool of you guys to spend the extra money in fuel to adjust the flight path to give your customers a truly once in a lifetime amazing view of an eclipse from the air! That's some few people will ever get to experience.
Incredible footage! Well done! I've only seen a partial a few years back, but it was very memorable. But seeing a total solar eclipse? .... in-flight? ... it must be absolutely phenomenal! And I'm sure the video doesn't compare to seeing it in person. Very cool story too, enjoyed reading about it on the Alaska Airlines blog.
Sun disappear in the middle of the day. The sky become strangely dark and MOON become the darkest object in the sky. Then you look left and right in the sky and realize that sky has strange colour that you never have seen it before and suddenly you see the planets of the Solar System with your naked eye and you do realize once again that those planets ARE around us all the time - rotating quietly ... Heat level drops. And animals go quiet. Flowers closed itself down. Everything is quiet . You look at the Eclipse, thinking about LIFE ... with Sun and without ... And the mighty Sun comes back shining in its full glory! AND you never ever forget the sight , strange light around you nor those goosebumps you did have during that TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE. PS: I think people should observe Solar Eclipse event silently and in THE owe. Not screaming and/or cheering - as that noise takes out from the experience of being in harmony with the Mother Nature. You take it all in ... and look for the next one! :)
When I was in Tunnel Hill Illinois for the 2017 eclipse, we actually briefly saw the shadow sweep over us. It was absolutely blink and you miss it but it was still visible coming over the hills. Utterly stunning. I'd have given a finger to be on that plane.
I can't be totally positive, but I think he really wanted us to look at that.

An angle from this high in altitude really puts into perspective the fact you’re in the moon’s shadow during a solar eclipse. Really incredible video.
So the moon is less than 70 miles across?
@@nattybumppo4151 No, the reason is that the sun is much wider than the moon, so the shadow is a lot narrower once it reaches the earth.

I booked a flight with Alaska Airlines after noticing that this is one of the few airlines being flexible enough to pay tribute to such cosmic events.
I think it's awesome that he shared this. That's beautiful
His enthusiasm was amazing, I wish teachers taught with this much fire
WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT
Just look at it! Would you look at that? Lol love it
Psh...
Would you just look at it
Did I just listen to a guy climax?
yes
Some call it a moongasm.
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!! here we go!!!!!!!
Lol best comment
+Mirror hahah nice
This video started playing loudly on my phone, and my family called out from the next room, & asked me to turn the porno down I was watching!!👀

"Would you look at that?" "Just look at that!" - Ed Bassmaster
I've seen it once, from the surface, and I will never see it in my life again… Incredible!

Yeah friend this man is killing everyone off by laughter and anger. Really this is gonna be a nice joke with this guy. If I saw this guy today, bet I would really kill myself on laughter!
Yeah, seeing this with your own eyes will really touch you like it did this guy. For a rare amount of humans it is the most amazing sight you will ever directly behold.
lol thats one passionate astornomer. :P
Good for him though. That must've been pretty awesome in person.
my favorite quote from this video: “oh my god”
Seriously, this would have been AMAZING if they had dubbed over that guy with some ambient music...
Or some Bob Ross narrations
Happy Happy sun, now it has a friend. The Happy Moon is coming to see the Sun today. look at that, they're best friends.!!
Sounds like an episode of Rick and Morty
Sounds like Ed Bassmaster "Just look at it" mixed with the Double Rainbow reaction
What does it mean?
Wow!! Now that is SPECTACULAR, way better view from the view of a plane high in the sky than being on the ground. That is incredible!!
*Video anylatics *
Oh my God -95 times.
Look at Datt-71 times.
Ahh- 42 times
Here we go - 4 times.
( Obsessed with OMG) - Such a theist :3
Thanks for count
_"Oh my god, look at that! Look at it! Look at that! Look at it!"_ I am looking at it, damnit!! What more do you want from me? LOL
TOTALITY! PROMININCES! TOTALITY! ELONGATED! PROMINANCES! OH MY GOD!
Bigblue091 😂
Now that is a view you would rarely ever get from that altitude!!! Pilots were probably excited over this one! Beautiful!
Edit: I witness the eclipse of 2024 in Dallas & I had the SAME reaction! 😂
For people who are complaining about him yelling excitement there's a volume option for a reason.... You've probably never had anything exciting in your life
***** shadow of the fucking moon.... And it's beautiful
That was only 3 minutes, imagine an 8 hour flight with this guy!
"OMG, the flight took off! OMG it's beautiful! OMG the food is here! Wow! TOTALITY! OMG! their giving peanuts! OMG! It's been 15 minutes! OMG! wow! "
The commentator kept this moment from reaching its full potential
That really was super cool of you guys to spend the extra money in fuel to adjust the flight path to give your customers a truly once in a lifetime amazing view of an eclipse from the air! That's some few people will ever get to experience.
Incredible footage! Well done! I've only seen a partial a few years back, but it was very memorable. But seeing a total solar eclipse? .... in-flight? ... it must be absolutely phenomenal! And I'm sure the video doesn't compare to seeing it in person. Very cool story too, enjoyed reading about it on the Alaska Airlines blog.
This is beautiful. It;s a combination of my favorite passions. Astronomy and aviation. Like something out of Interstellar! ; )
He just be livin his best life
Thank you for helping me get ready for tomorrow's eclipse!
Oh my god! Look at that!
"Oh my God" "It's coming" "Here we go"
Does anyone pay attention to the eclipse instead of the guy
Oh yeah, I was completely immersed in that unbelievably stunning view.
...until I turned my volume up.
Darian Washburn I had to go back and watch it a second time with the mute on because oh my God
I tried, but it was too hard. I should have put mute or put my earphones down, but I was hoping the guy would shut up at some point.
Darian Washburn like that profile pic
Darian Washburn what eclipse ?
When I was in Tunnel Hill Illinois for the 2017 eclipse, we actually briefly saw the shadow sweep over us. It was absolutely blink and you miss it but it was still visible coming over the hills. Utterly stunning. I'd have given a finger to be on that plane.
