This video convinced me to go see this with my kid in 2024 who was 18 months at the time he's now 8 and was amazed as I was today in Mont Mégantic with 2500 people who experience a perfect weather dead center full solar eclipse.
    Couldn't ask anything better!
    Thanks Derek

j'étais la aussi! Même si on était 2500 personnes il y a eu un 10 secondes de silence total au tout début c'était magique!
(I was there too! Even if we were 2500 people there was a short time period where everyone stayed silent when the eclipse started... it was amazing)

I saw this in southern Illinois...it was super hot and humid that day. The coolest and eeriest thing was the sudden and refreshing drop in temperature and how nature reacted. As soon as totality started, the cicadas starting singing and the birds went silent.

My Dad, myself, and two of my closest friends went to Sparta Tennessee to watch this eclipse. I synced pink floyd dark side of the moon to the time of totality (dad's favorite album). It has come to be the absolute favorite memory of my life. In July of 2018 my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away April 2nd 2020. Until his last day he thanked me for convincing him to come with me to experience this once in a lifetime event. I will never forget this special day. Love ya dad and I'll see you on the dark side of the moon!

I was not far away at the Eclipse Festival. It’s impossible to describe the sensation of the moment of totality. 50,000 people howling like animals, the air getting cold, the stars coming out. It’s the only time in my life I could really feel the immensity of the moon and the sun. I don’t quite know how else to say it, except that it was by far the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen.

There is a group on TH-cam who goes around comment negative stuff as if they themselves are Jesus. These people usually insult other people by pretending they are above everyone else. I have seen so many in these eclipse videos, probably because they have no idea the true expirence yet they have seen pictures and thought they are experts. The dewpoint was high in Carbondale, IL. It was very hot and humid, around 95 degrees with a heat index around 110. During the eclipse, the temperature dropped to about 81, and the heat index went down as well, making it very pleasant outside. I imagine there was more of a dramatic temperature drop out west were the air was drier.

@darkdezire could you say more about how this video captured what you saw? was it the sun with the donut hole? or the spliced in images that looked like NASA images? The sun with donut hole surprised me. I thought more of the sun would be covered in totality.

    • @inciseinfinity

@@NYTruthseeker well, the sun is blocked by the moon, yes, but not totally. that's why in the filtered video, you can see the glorious ring when the sun reaches totality. light is still coming out from the sun to earth, and since the light is coming from multiple directions, you will see the sun as a donut with your naked eye.

Some annoying grouse and/or pheasants were making some funny noises moments before as well as some cute chipmunks. Then absolute silence and rapid coolness and breezes.

Being in such a massive crowd takes away one another impressive part of the eclipse: the sound of silence.
In 1999, my dad and I were in France. Noticing the clouds were ruining our experience,we jumped in the car and had a wild ride along small countryside roads to a location where the sun was still shining. Minutes before the total eclipse, we stopped the car in the middle of nowhere and jumped out of it.
Those last minutes were unforgettable. As if nature surrendered for this phenomenon, all crickets, birds, dogs and other creatures - including the both us - became absolutely silent. That overwhelming sound of silence with the beauty of the eclipse and within the company of my dad is still one of the most precious memories in my mind.

The next two total solar eclipses will give you very little chance to see totality, as will the 3rd one unless you think millions of people will decide to travel to Antarctica. The 4th, 2024 one, will cross the most land than the last 3, giving millions the chance to witness it. We're talking about totality, not just any eclipse.
I don't get why people are so butthurt about a country being excited for something that hasn't happened in nearly 100 years. The next one on 2024 will probably be viewed by more than the next 3 combined, if we're all still here. :3
America can be a shitty place, with shitty people, ruled by shitty "leaders", but don't generalize.

I saw it in the NC mountains. There is no equal to being in Totality and experiencing the moon fitting perfectly over the sun for a few minutes. No video or photo capture that event, and if you can, make the next available event. Since the earth is 7/8 water, mostly the eclipse path is not on land, but this one traveled the US from West to South. It was an awesome beyond words.

Totally agree. The crowd reaction is a big part of the experience. :) I saw 2017's just outside Madras, in a crowd of probably 20,000 people. The combined screams and cheers and "Oh My God!"s the second totality struck was something I'll never forget.
Hope you got to see the 2024 eclipse. I went to Del Rio for that one and was nearly clouded out -- had a peek of the corona for about 10 seconds. It was fascinating to see the difference between a totality in a clear sky and a nearly overcast sky. It felt much more like the mother of all storms was sweeping over.

Total solar eclipse is really weird thing. You have to experience it to understand the hype. We had one in Finland 22. of July 1990. It's really hard to describe. It's day at first and then suddenly night. One second the birds are singing and you have all the sounds then darkness comes and everything stops. Total silence. It's really scary. I think everyone should experience it once in their lifetime. It's a perfectly good reason to travel across the globe.

On one hand this is really humbling and gives you a sense of how small we are, but on the other it's amazing that we are so lucky to have a moon at the perfect distance and size to appear the same size as the star in the sky with it 93 million miles away.

I imagine if it was designed it would always be that way, unfortunately the moon will eventually drift too far away from the Earth so that all solar eclipses are partial. Granted, the moon moves away at 3.8cm every year so that will take about 600 million years, quite a long time to us people, however the earth is 4,500 million years old, so not very long compared to that. Similarly, there was a time where the moon was much larger than the sun in the sky.

Ted R. If it was designed that way then why is the moon moving further away, so that one day it not cover the entire sun, and I suppose god doesnt plan a human extinction before that

I'm so glad everyone reacted like this! I saw a full eclipse in Austria back in 1999. I couldn't stop shouting "This is unbelievable!" until someone told me to shut up. Then I was pretty embarrassed that I had lost my cool over something I knew was going to happen.

Mr Penguin, thanks for rubbing it in. I don't know if you've ever seen one, but the experience can be a little more overwhelming than you'd expect (as you should be able to tell from this video).
Unless you travel after them, you aren't likely to see a full eclipse even once in your life. I live in Germany and there won't be another one here for another 64 years. I'll be 104.

Everyone looses it, the first time they see one. And if people are commenting here who haven't seen one, you have no f ... ing idea what your mind goes through. And I guarantee, if you get to see one, you too will be screaming your head off, freaking out in silence, or just plain dumbfounded by what you see. To experience one, is beyond belief.

A "half-one" isn't anything. The difference between 99.99999% totality and 100% is literally day and night. No comparison. I saw the totality in Casper Wyoming and I can't even describe how emotional it felt. The people where I was reacted the same exact way. It was truly incredible.

I love this video! And I'll tell ya why. I love that he talks to you and tells you all the little details about what is happening, and also switching over to I guess a filter that lets you better see the eclipse. Also the song he uses for those parts has been a favorite of mine, its by a group called Moon Craters, name of the song is Spinning Earth.
    This video is perfection!
